Saturday, November 29, 2014 - The Shafer 2003 Hillside Select was big, bold and on the edge of being overripe. On the palate there's a good structure and enough minerality to keep it on the ground. It smells of blueberries, creme de cassis, mint, vanilla, chocolate and cinamon. After 11 years the influence of the new french oak is still obvious by strong toasty and vanilla flavours and a distinct spicyness. In combination with the fruit it seems much younger than it actually is. Certainly, the Shafer is a well crafted fun wine to drink with a good aging potential. With air the confit berry notes became a bit more decent and the wine showed more depth but overall I was missing the complexity to give this a higher score.
