Thursday, April 28, 2005 - I have always enjoyed Mionetto's sparkling moscato wines, but have not liked much else from this producer. I was told told to try their Sergio Spumante and am glad I did. This is a blend of ~70% Prosecco di Valdobbiadene DOC and an ~30% mix of Verdiso, Bianchetta and Chardonnay. This is enough for it not to be classified as a Prosecco.

Appearance: Medium sized bubbles; this is no Champagne. It has a light pale hay color with a nice mousse, but the larger than normal bubbles are distracting.

Nose: Fresh citrus and a touch of Acacia. The best Prosecco based nose I have come across. Almost smells like a scaled down 1996 Dom P (unfortunately, it doesn't taste like it).

Palate: Very light and fluffy. Nice citrus flavors mix with creamy walnuts and just a tad of amylic bubble gum. A little bitter, but it is still fresh and breezy with floral and mineral flavors forming the backdrop.

Finish: Medium length and full of minerals and buttery walnuts. Nice, it makes you come back for more.

Comments: One of the better Prosecco based wines I have had. The nose and finish are great; the palate is avearge. More than I expected, but for 15-20 USD this is not a bad deal. I don't think this would cellar so if youu buy it, and drink up.
