Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - Wow. I was looking for a special bottle to open with dinner before my wife took a trip to Japan (the first time we were going to be apart since getting married). Decanted this for about 2 hours. When first opened I took a small sip and the wine was surprisingly approachable, if a bit hot. But after the full two hours the wine was sublime. Rich ruby color with purple hues. Glorious nose - blueberry, blackberry and spice. Silky and medium to heavy body. Raspberry, black fruits and cocoa explodes on the palate. Huge and impressive fruit. But balanced by solid acidity. Great structure and complexity. Pleasantly, all of the heat had gone away after decanting. Bottles like this make clear why Quilceda Creek is THE cult wine in Washington (no offense to Cayuse). Extraordinary!
