95 Points

Saturday, May 15, 2004 - Quilceda opened their new facility today. It is truly terrific. The last facility was crammed with barrels, boxes, and people. This new facility not only looks beautiful but provides lots more space and light. Last year I posted that the wines were a touch too cold and that glasses were not up to the wine. John Ware (VP Sales) sent me an email saying that they would have all that fixed at the new place. They "fixed" those issues and then some. I did not check the brand on the glasses, but they were perfect for the wine. Now on to the wine. Imagine a blend of the 1995 and the 1999. This vintage shows the elegance of the 95 and the power (perhaps a touch more restrained) of the 1999. I was prepared for a big wine, but I was pleasantly surprised by the tremendously silky tannins. The nose was fairly closed but did show chocolate, char, and violets. The palate was simply awesome with the aforementioned silk qualities and loads of dark fruit and spicy oak. This is certainly the most elegant of the power vintages (94, 98-01). I still am a bit partial to the raw, unrestrained power of the 1994, but this wine is certainly in the same league. Pierre gives a drinking window of 2008-2020. I have to think the well-stored this wine will last a least a decade longer. If you want to try one, I would open it in the next few months before it fully shuts down.
