96 Points

Sunday, May 30, 2004 - This wine is much different than the 2000 in that it is already closed. The 2000 was drinking quite well (as long as it got 12 hours of air) for 6+ months from release. The 2001 is already much tighter and nearly shutdown. Even after 12 hours of air, the nose is heavily dominated by char. I also find some blackberries, violets, and vanilla. The palate remains massive with tastes of charcoal, chocolate, and every dark fruit I can imagine. Despite the incredible power, the balance is perfect. With the exception of the 98 Grange, I have not encountered such a huge wine in perfect balance. This wine might change the world's impression of Washington wines in 15 years. Unfortunately, it will need that long to be anywhere near its peak.
