12/10/2020 9:37:00 AM - Two corked bottles of the same wine in a row? That is tough luck! If it is any comfort, I had the 1998 side by side with the 1985 and the 1990 about ten month ago, and while the 85 and the 90 were marvelous, the 98 was stewed, raisny, broad and alcoholic and clearly the least pleasurable of the three.

12/10/2020 1:07:00 PM - Thanks PSPatrick! Actually it was only one bottle, I had mistakenly posted the same note twice (now removed). This was one of two bottles I had bought at auction a few years ago, so perhaps the provenance was not ideal. I consumed the first one about three years ago, and although it had nicely evolved qualities to some extent I also found it slightly stewed and alcoholic.

1/13/2021 12:49:00 AM - Still bad luck, but not as bad as two in a row...

I am addicted to that tingling in the air I sense before opening old bottles... you know you may be about to experience something very special... but there is also the chance of disappointment...

I have not bought at auction yet, only from trusted merchants and collectors, so my "bad bottle-ratio" probably only is one in ten. I like those odds, but some day I will give auction a try - for that tickling in the air ;)

    To good bottles!
