Friday, March 20, 2015 - An insane wine, per the established wisdom for dry white wines, which is to bottle them young and release them out of the winery as fresh as possible. When I bought this a few years ago, 1998 was the current release of this wine, whose grapes are 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia, made as a reserva, maximally aged in oak barrels. This wine simply defies all expectations. Most white wines released anywhere near 17 years after being harvested would be dead on arrival. The color is the same light yellow of most all 3 year old white wines. The ethereally perfumed nose has zero of the butterscotch which is a typical give away that a white wine is older. The mouth entry has the firmness one would expect from a wine that extracted tannins from the grape skins. Bright acidity accompanies the taste all the way out though an almost endless finish. The wine goes magnificently with foods ranging from salads to meats. I bought this as a defiant oddity, but it won me over for its wonderful quality.
