Wednesday, March 22, 2017 - Medium-dark crimson color. Dark, very tertiary nose of shoe polish, with a light mineral aroma. The palate is light-bodied compared with other vintages of Tignanello, a reflection of the rainy conditions prevailing in 1991. Cedar wood notes transition to a dustily dry finish. This is clearly on the downslope. Having tried mostly OK-to-great vintages of this wine (1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2004), I found the relatively strong performance of this wine illustrative. I believe that a defining characteristic of great wines is that they can be good even in poor vintages (e.g. 1984 Mouton-Rothschild). Based on this example, Tignanello ranks among the greats. Consume immediately.
