Monday, May 11, 2009 - Having tasted 14 other vintages of GPL over the years back to 1959 I know what it can achieve and generally like the style. It can be a good performer in off-vintages too. Amber at the rim shows a mature colour. Nose is quite gravelly and dominated more by tobacco than cassis - almost Graves-like. Nice, complex mature claret aromas. To taste, a bit astringent on the finish and hard when first tasted but it mellows considerably after a 2 hour decant - give it some air. Then sleek, and solid red-fruits flavours, flavoury, clarety, a hint of green though not excessively so and a modest finish in that earthy, tobacco style suggested by the smell. In all, a decent effort and fully mature - it isn't going to improve but has decent levels of fruit at the moment mingled with plenty of subtle secondary flavours.
