Thursday, January 26, 2017 - Opened with dinner. Dark, purplish/deep red showing the slightest hints of maturity. Jammy nose that needs to be coaxed out of the glass, but there's humidity, bramble, spice and everything nice - cherry, blackberry, raspberry, plum. Full bodied and bombastic fruit bomb to be sure. Amazing this is 16 years old - could have been bottled 2 years ago. I can't imagine what this tasted like in 2003. Massive core of fruit - almost confected and candied syrup qualities. The full cornucopia of reds and blacks is here - and there are the hints of evolution in there too - some very mild tea, tar, cedary elements as well. This is a monster wine still at this stage, and I think the fruit will drive this for another 5-10 years. You could call this a late harvest Shiraz or a near-Port. To some this might be too much - as there is a wickedly full throttle fruit profile - but it's not overly alcoholic, or pruney or sappy - no cooked elements, or anything. It's fresh and jammy all the way.
