Saturday, February 11, 2017 - I am really confused by the drinking window some users have applied to much younger vintages. I was offered 72 bottles of this wine on a 2001 vintage, which had been stored in one cellar since release. Being slightly sceptical, and bearing in mind that I hadn't previously tasted this wine, I was therefore led to believe it may well be over the hill. I was half expecting a waxy, oxidised wine that would be 'interesting' to taste - but nothing else! Thankfully, I was wrong. Whether it be pristine cellaring, or a lucky bottle, on this occasion Zind 2001 was full of energy and life. The colour was vibrant and by no means murky or showing any signs of oxidation. The nose, mineral focused, with a hint of baked apple and cream. The palate, albeit fairly simplistic in the complexity department, offered lovely rich stone fruit tapered by perfectly weighted acidity. Leaving the best until last, the finish - This was stubborn and relentless, possessing intensity and tremendous length. This wine ranks as one of the most pleasant surprises my memory can recall. At £10 a bottle you expect a certain level of satisfaction, this wine went far beyond my expectations.
