95 Points

Thursday, May 20, 2010 - Splash decant, and with apologies to the TX ofliners in San Antonio this weekend. Tight but meaty, mineral nose of cassis with a lifted earthy complexity. Plenty of licoric and spice on the attack but with a rampant tannic spine. A very backwards Ornellaia but potentially a spectacular effort. Harder to get to grips with than the approachable 2000 and 2003 and far more structured than the beatiful but slightly soppy 1997. I can see where Paul S is coming from with his "Pauillac" comment but this is unmistakably Tuscan. Really grippy long finish delivering that Ornellaia sugar paper note in spades. At 14.5% it's heady but beautifully balanced. Overall a bit monolithic at the moment but a stunning, terroir-driven Ornellaia. It's not quite ready (and will last for at least another 15 on this showing), but a benchmark. Ornellaia grows up with style. 95+
