Jason & Simon's Village Burgundy Tasting Dinner (67 Pall Mall): This is one wine where I wonder if palate fatigue prevented it from being fairly evaluated. A little quieter than its flightmate, more restrained, but there's a lot going on here. I think of all the wines we tasted this is the one I'd like to try again - perhaps over a longer period and with larger pours...

Jason's Village Burgundies II (67 Pall Mall): Notes on the wane by this stage as you would expect, but they say this was lifted, light, fresh and delicious. In the clear light of day I'd say this was a very seductive wine, sexy and really beautifully done, brimming with latent energy which for a village classification is really quite something. If someone would let me buy it at release I would! WOTN by a small margin, but definitely worth it.

PnP'ed and consumed over 4 hours. Medium ruby with a garnet rim. Medium+ intensity perfume of fresh and dried raspberry, strawberry, and red plum, along with notes of red flowers, spices, and sous bois. Rich in complexity and elegant in texture, the palate also delivered an abundance of flavors surrounding the red-fruited core. Medium+ acidity and resolved tannins. The length left a little bit to be desired, though. No sign of fading till the end. Ready to drink, but can definitely hold for another 5-10 years.

Such delicate floral aromas, black cherry skin and spice with refined palate texture, impressive mid palate density, brightness on smooth finish, easily rivals premiers crus from other producers. Purchased at domain after release, prices have long since been scraping ever higher skies, as with other Burgundies. But this is truly lovely. 🙂

I’ve been very lucky to drink a number of vintages of this wine and I think this along with the 2010 might be my favorite. The color is a light cherry/ruby with a pink rim. The nose is glorious: red fruits, lavender and a sprinkling of spice. Sweet perfume. So classic. Medium bodied. Just entering peak perfection. Velvety, pure, complete. Simply outrageous Village. I can’t see it getting better but should be delicious for another 5 or so years. (93)
Imagine walking into a room of freshly cut flowers and then they are also producing fresh dark chocolate. Nice combination. This is a lovely pinot - so hedonistic - verging on over-ripeness / over-opulence but it just walks the line. Terrific stuff from the sisters and it just kept giving over 3 hours from pnp. But you need to be in the mood for ripe Pinot. If you want it cool and classic the 2012 is the one. PS: A small glass left for day 2 remarkably preserved superbly well and the wine showed almost unchanged - possibly even a bit finer - on day 2. So this should easily have another decade plus of peak drinking pleasure ahead.

The solar characteristic of the vintage shows, but is well under control. Lucious ripe red fruit with a nice amount of spice is present. It is ripe yet not heavy as it contains a good amount of acidity and minerality, but some in the group thought this was Oregon. It is a very delicious wine, with a nice long finish and terrific balance. More red than black fruited and with a medium to full mouthfeel.

Zoom tasting with the wine group - Champagne and Red Burgundy (Zoom): Tasted blind. Light ruby, youthful color; aromatic, wild red berries, sweet spice; palate is light bodied, low tannin, medium-plus acidity, low alcohol, red fruited; finish is medium-plus length. This is everything I expect from red burgundy and, I would guess, a very good Chambolle. Maybe something like a Bertheau 1er? Still fairly youthful. 92+ On reveal: Really lovely, just a classic and balanced red burgundy.

We're on something of a Mugneret-Gibourg tear right now. Probably because the weather is turning more towards Autumn and, well, fuck it. This is the best bottle of the Vosne that I've had in as long as I can remember. It takes the generous fruit of the vintage and melds it into a beautiful package of silky berry and red currant fruit with a defined mineral spine that skates along the tannin. Lovely shape and a bit of Vosne spice (although, seemingly less than recent Chaignots, shrug). Air brings out floral elements and just a hint of cocoa powder earthiness on the palate. Every sip was beautiful. For me, entering a great drinking phase and I'd drink a ton of it if I had a ton of it.

Out of magnum. A lovely wine, very typical of M-G house style - plus, round fruit with a touch of spice. I think the 2009 shows a touch too much extraction for me, especially with the more delicate Fourrier next to it. I think the 2009 1ers from M-G handle the extraction better (like the Chaignots).

After a great 09 MG Chaignot 2009 per-Xmas, I was confident this Vosne would be drinking well. It was delicious. Elegant, floral on the nose. Red and blue fruits on the palate. Great balance. Cherry, raspberry and blueberry. Hint of vosne spice on the finish. Slightly sweeter fruit than the 2008 version of this wine. Still shows ethereal characteristics of the domaine.

Significantly riper nose than the '10 or '08. Vosne spice, cherry fruit, and florals on the nose. Sappy and dense with more spice, red pinot fruit bordering at times on preserves, hard candy, and deft wood spice on the palate. It's round, fleshy yet silky in texture, perfumed and fruity, but still manages to hold itself together. This does for me border on overripe. It steps right up to the line and then stops. Baroque and deep, yet with grace and good balance for it's size, with more stuffing than most village wines. Finishes firm yet broad, and interesting contrast. I like this quite a bit, but would much prefer to drink the '10 any day. I can say that for most red Burgs though.

It has been a while since I opened a bottle of this. Still dark ruby in color, hardly any development. Flowers, spices and dark soils on the nose, pretty good. Sweet tannins. Lush and ripe fruits, typical of the vintage but there is enough acidity to counter that. Slight warmth at finish. Excellent length and depth for a village. Drinking well now. This vintage could go on for years. Maintains excellent balance on the 2nd day, showing even more spices.

An absolute picture of elegance. Beautifully lifted, perfumey nose of crushed berries, baking spices, and violets. On the palate, it has plenty of the characteristic 2009 ripe fruit, but there's perfect restraint with nice cool, mineral tones and a silky texture that's irresistible. Can't remember having had a village wine this good in a long time.

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Fruit” day): Bright pale ruby to the eyes.
Elegant and relatively ripe wild red berry and cherry fruits. Fresh herbs and sweet spices. Ethereal and deep nose.
As always from this estate across vintages I have tasted, the acidity backbone really shows and carries the wine well across time. Good minerality that keeps it fresh and enjoyable. Not extremely complex but this is simply a well executed effort.
93 points at this stage with potential for at least another point in 5-10 years time.
12 hours upon uncorking (“Root” day): Still going strong with more mature fruits and integration. A little less complexity but enjoyable. Retain at 93 points.

Rich nose, if rather one-dimensional. Imperial colour. Rich, heavily spiced wine, arresting and thrilling, perhaps too much so for now. Still has much further to travel. Some length already, although much more in prospect. Altogether not yet ready, and currently overwhelming, but masses of promise.

Trenger mer tid. 89-90p med oppside.

Served from Zalto Burgundy glass. Spices and flowers on the nose with sweet tone. Lush and sweet an entry, spicy tannins on midpalate with a long finish. A lot more spicy than previous experience. Slight heat at backend, vintage? ABV is only 13% though. Better on the nose than on the palate. Very big and very good for a village.

Very attractive nose, floral and vibrant. Losing some of the baby fat vs last year, not as fruity. Still mainly primary. Hint of oaks coming through and some bitterness at finish. Better on the nose than on the palate, probably going through awkward adolescent stage but not shut down. Good acidity for the vintage and no hint of alcohol, fairly good balance overall. Time to wait. Shows better on the 3rd day, oaks are gone but some lingering bitterness. Not a lot of complexity but good balance. 91 pts.

I let this breathe up in the glass for three hours. Primary, garnet jewel color. Warm cola and Vosne spice aromas. So Vosne. Satiny, polished entry. The main flavor is underripe blackberry. This finishes tart with bright acids and Vosne spice. Not surprisingly, this seems a little tight and closed in the mouth. This is going to be great in three plus years. 91

Perfumed nose. Ripe fruits but not overdone. Firm mid-palate with unresolved tannins, bit of oak coming through at finish. Primary fruits. No hint of alcohol at backend. Surprisingly high acidity for the vintage. Big wine for a village, should last a long time, probably a 20 years wine. I really should pace my consumption of this wine. 3rd bottle out of 12. (A)

The 2009 Mugneret Gibourg is a brilliant rendition of this habitually outstanding cuvée, bursting from the glass in a blaze of raspberries, violets, Vosne spices and beautifully judged new wood. Ethereal and elegant, on the palate there is an outstanding core of silky tannins and it becomes apparent, despite the wine's incredibly charming and inviting personality, that it is actually a good five or more years away from really unwinding and showing the full extent of its depth and breadth—which is considerable. I see this matching or surpassing the stunning 2002 (which is still a young wine).

Very pleased with this wine. Youthful burgundy is not often this enjoyable. Rich and vivacious, fresh ripe fruit with no over-ripeness. That said it seems higher in alcohol than its claimed 13%, yet this estate is known for early picking and low alcohols to maintain freshness so I could well be wrong. This will be fascinating to watch over the next decade.

Nice red burg, very enjoyable to drink. A little glossy, a little young, and a little simple, but this shows ripe fruits, moderate depth, and a bit of spice. Well balanced but not a great value for the money. I've enjoyed other vintages more, and this is creeping up in price.

This will go down as one of the best village level Burgundy I ever had. Drank during a dinner of 12 at a high end Chinese restaurant in Asia hosted by a local friend. Everybody loved this wine. Medium ruby. Expressive, floral nose of red fruit with spices and a hint of toast, classical Burg. On the palate soft and elegant, very caressing with good mid mouth feel especially for this level. Beautiful and complex aromas. A real winner and still affordable. Congratulations to the Mugneret-Gibourg team! Ready now. PS: This confirms my experience in village level Burgundy. Stay away from it unless it is a top year AND a top producer

Half. Deep full cherry red. Very lush, and rich nose, fully and slightly creamy. A touch of spice. Similar on attack, quite full and rich and almost sweet with a thick texture. This wine is Wonderful. Stylistically the 09 Vosne is very similar to the 09 Bourgogne I had several days ago but bigger with more structure. This Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee has great elegance and an acid backbone that balances the lush fruit present in this vintage. This is clearly superior to the 2006 version I just had recently and is the best young VR I have tasted period. Makes you ask the question why other producers with similar plot of vines do not have this quality or purity of fruit. If you drink this young decant it for at least two hours and save half of the bottle for the next day. This wine tasted better on day 2 but clearly needs 5-8 years of bottle age and will last beyond a decade. I bought a case and am now thinking about buying six more bottles. Highly recommended+++.

One of the best village wines I've had, already at such a young age. The nose is intoxicating, fresh, complex and deep. Mouthfeel is round and silky, with above average length and an x-factor that make the 750ml disappear way too quickly. It will be hard to keep my hands off the other bottles left in the cellar.

The nose is way too deep and complex for the label. Supple, round, inviting, almost sexy, and very deep. Beautiful spice, rich and round with loads of structure and spice. This is a beautiful wine with excellent depth, balance, and structure to age a decade or more. This is a completely ridiculous level of quality for a village wine, and I will be backing up the truck. Wow. The best village wine I have had in a very long time. Wow. 92+ pts
Domaine Tasting at Mugneret Gibourg (Burgundy, France): From tank at the Domaine. 20% new oak. Dark red fruit with lots of seductive spice on the nose. Full, rich red fruit on the medium bodied palate as well. Great texture and perfect balance. Medium plus finish with nice grip. Outstanding Villages level wine; one of the best I've had in a long time.
