1 hour decant. Nose: Earth and pencil lead in abundance. Very Margaux. Palate: Soft styled with the pencil lead and loam showing with black fruits in a supporting role. Finish is long and elegant. Fabulous and perfect with fillets at Capital Grille. 92+ points.

Bordecembre.. no. 33 Wow, even I am surprised how many different bottles of Bordeaux came out to play this month!
I love to see the evolution of this Lascombes, about 1-1.5 years ago it was so tightly wound.. but today, after a full decant for 2 hours, it's so much more expressive!
Thinking back to my previous experience, it could have come across as heavily oaked and disjointed, but with more years... things really improve.
55% Merlot with 45% Cab and a drop of PV, such a high proportion of Merlot for a LB!
High 90% new French oak used. Cherries, plums and juicy red fruits with that underlying bright acidity M+. Still quite tannic, but slowly softening. Wait 5 years perhaps?
Thanks KK bro for sharing this, at Joy's If Only KL birthday celebration. Nice restaurant!

Decanted for an hour and then back into the bottle to drink at a restaurant. Lots of sediment. First thought is it's a bit lifeless. There's a lot of alcohol on the nose and palate. My wife commented that the alcohol smell is "burning". Blackberry on the nose. Very tannic on the palate. Decent pairing with cajun chicken and a better pairing with duck. It actually tasted the best at the end of the meal with with meringue dessert. Not sure if it was the pairing or the additional air. For most of the night I was scoring it at 87 but at the end of the night I settled on 88. We left a third of the bottle at the restaurant since it wasn't really impressing us. I would say this is a really bad QPR for an average/boring wine. Brad - heavypourwine.com

Bursting with juicy cherries, plums, cherry cola. Still tastes young with a plummy base. There’s a fine, bright acidity that lifts the beguiling licorice finish. Wonderful length and balance. Drink now or let it age until 2028 when it should be in its prime drinking window. Upside potential.

Had this at a holiday party in the west village , thought it was very good , many people at the party were impressed. Excellent mature claret, many dimensions to this wine. Would gladly drink again.

Good juice, bad QPR. (Bought today at $165 in NYC, can def find cheaper but still…)
2010, banger of a year, powerful and opulent wines built for aging, but this isn’t too powerful and is drinkable now.
Dark concentrated garnet color, looks its age.
On the nose, the fruit was very constrained, with black currant and strawberry dominant, and a subtle mango note. Bbq smoke, charred meat, cedar, and crushed rocks after an hour decant. Rather nice at that point, but after ~6 hours the bottle died a bit, so no need for long decants.
On the palate the fruit is richer and juicy. Bright black plum and black cherry, licorice, crushed rocks, pencil lead, smoked meat, cedar, medium bodied, but then the tannins overwhelm the finish.
An overall decent bottle, just would have guessed it’s $40, not 4x that.
From Coravin. Aromas of blackcurrant, earth, savoury spice, touches of forest floor and mushroom, plums. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy with savoury blackcurrant, softly textured grip persists long, a touch of alcohol warmth, those tertiary notes (which are a little surprising but not off-putting), long, complete and lovely

Beautiful nose and everything in the right place; deep red fruits, heavy structure and luxurious finish. Wine of the night with good friends at Parc Bistro.

This is simply not a well made Bordeaux. The nose was flat and muted while the flavor was reminiscent of a $9 bottle with a screw cap. I decanted it for 2 hours before drinking and tasted it a few times over the course of that time. It did not improve. At around hour 3 it seemed to have crashed and became even more disjointed. Not worth anywhere near the $110 I paid. I wouldn’t pay $10 for this wine having experienced it.
Crème de Cassis and espresso on the nose, followed by currant, fig, and blackberry with well integrated oak. Definitely a modern style as opposed to a classic Margaux

I was hoping for more out of this wine. Still very primary and almost new world in style. Tastes like a California blend that was made intentionally to show its fruit more than its terrior. It is still a very good wine, just not a classic Margaux.

Very tasty even at PnP. Excellent, viscous dark ruby with great bright appearance. Showing off lots of lead pencil already. Pretty fruit profile in the mouth. This is ripe and round, but obviously much time on its side as well for the future. I'll wait to rate this to give it some air.
In just a couple of short hours, this has turned very elegant and feminine. Classic Bordeaux nose with lead pencil, cassis, and restrained yet lovely red berry fruit. Extremely pretty. A hint of eucalyptus too. The palate is very distinctive, and to some it will be very appealing. But to me it seems too light, TOO distinctive. Almost a bubble gum quality to the flavors, and the finish, for me, is off-putting. For whatever reason, the palate on this is not to my liking, despite the fantastic appearance and stellar nose. 5-13-8-5: 81/100. I plan to re-visit this bottle tomorrow.
Nearly 20 hours later, this hasn't changed a whole lot. I still can't understand why nose and mouth give such different impressions, although I will say they are a bit more in tune today. But not enough to move the needle on my overall assessment.

Bordeaux 2009 and 2010 comparison (Praelum Wine Bistro): Deep ruby. Nose dominated by burnt hay even after some extended bottle-breathing, and some redcurrant. Tight and tannic, but then shows sour cherry and redcurrant, then some dried grass, smokes, and nutmeg. Quite persistent at the back though

First of our 2010's. Dark crimson color, with aromas of blackberry coulis, red fruits, cedar and mint. Concentrated and mouth filing, black and red fruits, pencil lead, more cedar and dried tannins on the palate and finish. Still a little tight after these all these years, but a delightful experience that paired nicely with grilled fillets.

Had trouble deciding after decanting for one hour if that was long enough. Did not seem to improve as it sat. I think needs longer to improve, not sure. Leave it up to somebody that knows what they are talking about. Any comments will be appreciated.

Somewhat muted nose but opened up after about an hour to violets and some secondary notes. Great black fruits and we’ll balanced. Prominent tannins but well integrated. Structure to last but drinking great right now.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Slightly baked blackcurrant, brambles, a slight plums, a little caramel, sweet spice, slight alcohol prickle, touch of savoury ness. Juicy, initially a splash of savoury blackcurrant then plenty of drying, slightly woody, coarsely textured tannins. Time (I'm hoping)

Last of the tasting. Aromas of oak, forest floor, cedar, blackberry, and perfume. The palate is the same as the nose with some dried herbs, vanilla, and a hint of plum. Long finish
Medium plus acidity with tannins that you think is not bad until the very last minute to remind you it needs more time or good decant. Have some protein with it and you are ready to go.
Deep purple almost black color. Concentrated black fruit with prominent tannins. Softened with aeration. Still quite youthful. Solid wine but not great.

An absolute knockout. One never could have guessed by the super deep purple color it was anything other than a Cali cab, and for sure it was perhaps more voluptuous then elegant but what pleasurable drinking.

Deep colour and popping with flavour. Its finish is long and smooth. A short decant and its right in the drinking window today. Opened after a whole bunch of wines, including Cali cabs. This followed all of them up perfectly.

Decanted three hours. Silty violet, slightly rusted rim. Remarkably vibrant, complex nose of leather, baking spice, tobacco, barnyard, and a green vegetal note I usually associate with Rioja. The complexity largely extends to the black-leaning midweight palate of ripe plum and blackberry, minerals, spice. Long finish, a little hot and bitter, remarkably coarse tannins that I love, but some may find off-putting. Plenty of structure to get slowly better for at least another decade, but I think it's very good today. Excellent with a steak frites.

Deep black color. Plums and hints of strawberries in the nose. Still moderately tannic but it softened nicely an hour after decanting. While a pleasure to drink, the two of us who tasted it felt that the oak elements were too powerful and they overwhelmed the elegant underlying fruit.

Double decanted 3 hrs ahead. Drinking very well, and really opened up once paired with food. No rough edges, but still some nice structure to compliment the great secondary flavors. I like this window, but this should do well for many years.

Drank with friends over several hours. Still youngish looking with a dense core and little browning. Nose began as restrained damp, earthy aromas, but opened over time to smoked dark cherry, brambly berries, oil cured olives, sous bois, forest floor, and dry earth. Still youthful-feeling on the palate with tidy brambly fruits and savory flavors supported by med+ bright acid and persistent, drying med tannins. Drink or hold. Excellent 93.

I had such high hopes for this spectacular 2010 vintage, but both the 2005 as well as 2010 Lascombes did not shine last night - Nose was extremely restrained and tight, and I only got partial blackfruit notes from this reputable Margaux. One of 4 Margsuxs of the night, thanks DL for sharing at J's birthday dins. It was decanted for over an hour, then glass aired through out the dinner session but remained closed. Wines are such finicky interesting creatures ?? Cheers!

Coravin fun - Lascombes & Belgrave (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Blackcurrant, black cherry, earth, cedar, sweet spice, slight alcohol prickle on the nose, some polished oak as well. On the palate it's juicy and savoury, the fruit present but in the background, tannins are drying on the gums, a little plum, black cherry and blackcurrant joined by some creamy notes. Still primary, time required.

Started out better than it ended. Definitely a big and muscular Lascombes with a deep, fleshy appearance and on the cusp of color change. Initially, it was floral, with earthy Marguax red fruit and flowers and the dryness was sensational. The finish pulled on the plate with lots of great expressions of the earthy floral feel of the bouquet. At this stage, if I would have stopped drinking it, or if this was merely a 3 oz. pour at a wine tasting, I would have rated it a 95. But as the wine relaxed, something happened that I have noticed with other bottles of Lascombes. It was as if the wine dropped its arms and gave up. The wine started losing focus and balance and became ever so slightly clumsy and fatigued.
This bottle brought on an epiphany. It seems like every time I have been totally blown away by a Lascombes, it was at a wine tasting and I can't recall a time when I enjoyed a whole bottle and craved another.
Dark purple in color, this exuded a beautiful aroma as soon as I pulled the cork. Aerated and decanted for 1 hour before serving. We did multiple small pours rather than pouring full glasses; no reason why-just felt like doing this. I was entranced with its feeling of savoriness. It filled the mouth with red fruits, earth, spices and cigar or pipe tobacco. Each sip was delicious.

Decanted for 2+ hours. Black currants, plums, dark fruit, floral. Sweet tannins and as the wine evolved, coffee, cigar leaf, mocha become prominent. Incredibly elegant, and as time went on, classic Margaux characteristics are evident that make this a wonderful wine.

This wine is drinking very nicely. Wish I had a few more bottles to see how it ages over the next few years.
The wine looks purple colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), cherry and plum. It tastes like mineral, cherry and plum. The body is medium/full.
My first few sips I was tricked in to thinking it this was a Pinot Noir. I was tricked by the feint mineral flavors. In fact its 55% Merlot 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot.
I enjoyed this bottle over three days, using a few puffs of preserver gas between each pour. Definitely very enjoyable. It paired very nicely with a medium rare rib eye.

I tend to really like this producer and this pretty much met expectations. Has the typical black and blue fruit, a bit of smoke and lovely creme de cassis, along with some welcome dryness on the finish and the bright acidity of the vintage. The last glass was particularly delicious. However, the price has crept up over the years and it's just not that competitively priced any more so I don't seek it out as much as I might. The '09 was a bit deeper, which I think I prefer, though the '15 was a surprise stunner for me and I think better price/quality ratio.

At ten years of age, this was a bit tight and closed, perhaps going through a period in this stage, deep dark garnet in color, medium to full-bodied, blackcurrant and blackberry fruits with notes of black tea, fresh herbs, and black olives with hints of clove spice, cedar and licorice, turning to chewy tannins on the finish. https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2020/08/big-red-flight-highlights-grilled-steak.html

Double decant with no aerator. Right out of the glass bouquet of tobacco, blackberry, leather, graphite and lavender. On palette: black cherries, dark chocolate, amazing honeysuckle flavor that seems to emerge mid way thru the finish. Finish length 2min+. This is drinking beautifully. After 1.5 hrs its blooming with more dark fruits and that floral element. One of those under the radar 2nd growths that needs to be appreciated more. Oh agree with the "bloody meats" comment as well! Probably has another 3 years max.

Out of the bottle it is inky black with a rich perfume; spices, pepper, smoke. Before decanting fruit predominates on the tongue. After about two hours of decanting things start to pick up: fruit has largely dissipated and left with tastes of tobacco and cedar, nice acid and a tannic finish. After a few more hours left with fully retired fruit and grippy tannins, perfect for a nicely seared ribeye.

One hour of decanting. Still tough and a hard (perhaps too short decanting). Besides this the wine demonstrates very nice traditional Bordeaux flavors - black currant, cedar, dark fruit. Nose is beautiful. Palate still a bit tough. This wine will be very nice to have in five years or so.

(Blind tasting) Full, deep nose quite elegant. Subtle spice but a bit too oaky (coconut). Dark, cool black fruit. Is this too modern, or does it have elegance as well? Medium-fullish, complex, very concentrated, dense, slightly sweet-fruitish palate. Ripe but prominent tannins. Violets, oak and black currant. Modern style Bordeaux that does not speak of place - more winemaking. But of course the quality is there. We prefer more old-school style, but clearly this was a bit too much on the young side. Better wait 10 years.

Coravin fun - Ready to drink & New arrivals (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. Cedar, sweet spice, biscuit, blackcurrant and a little plum. Drank next to the 2009. Color of dark red. Scents of raspberry, red fruit and muddle other berries. Tastes consistent with scents, and certainly tannins and acidity were very prominent. By way of contrast, the 2009 was much much less tannic and much more fruity.

375ml. Decanted for an initial 3 hrs but needed another 3 hrs to fully open, so I would recommend a minimum of 5 hrs of air if drinking at this stage.
A lot of structure and power packed in this. This wine had a big dark nose of currant, cigar smoke and dense foliage, and lots of dark fruit and liquorice on the palate. Rather modern in character.
Probably requires 8-10 more years of cellar time before hitting peak, and easily 20-30 years of life ahead.

Very dark ruby. Expressive nose of toasted oak, dark fruit, bakery and a touch of forest. Impressive and full bodied entry on the palate. Boom this places itself rich and ripe in your mouth, modern for sure but the terrific 2010 vintage provides freshness and grip, so it remains Medoc in style and drinkable. Not a fan of this modern wine usually but this sample is hard to dislike. Surprisingly drinkable tonight but better to wait for more secondary aromas to emerge. 93-94

Taste: Medium/full bodied with some chewy tannins and medium acidity. The structure is on the bigger side with tones of dark red cherries, new oak, cranberries, some leather and a touch of spice box tones.
Overall: The oak wasn't too big on this. It was certainly there, but it didn't seem to be covering up everything else. This is very young, and the structure is imposing. It did have a more complete feel than other Margauxs.

A little lightish on the attack, which is probably good for a Margaux, especially given how modern recent vintages of Lascombes have been. The power does kick in on the midpalate, continuing through with some spice on the finish. Not as brutally tannic as even some of the Graves reds were. This chateau seems to have dialed it back a bit now. 92-94

UCGB tasting Bordeaux 2010 (Brussels): Beautifully ripe dark forest fruits, toasted oak, cedar, cigar box etc. in the bouquet. On the palate a pleasant somewhat sweet start, beautiful dark fruits, exclusive oak which the fruits can handle and a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity. Mild, but powerful tannin and a good concentration. In this stage definitely one of the better Margaux wines I tasted. At this moment the wine gives the impression it will be easy to drink starting from now and it will not close down, although there is plenty potential. In general 2000 wines gave the same impression in their youth, but many did shut down, so for this Lascombes I don't know. It won't hurt to wait until 2020 or 2022 to try how in shows then. For now 93 - 94.

Lascombes was one of the few estates in the Medoc to use more Merlot in their blend than they included in 2009. With a blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine is deep ruby with blue, purple accents. On the nose, violets, oak, cassis and forest floor aromas are easy to find.

10/11/2023 - Only Drink The Good Stuff Does not like this wine:

Drink or Hold, I cant call this.

Excellent, if a little new world in style right now. Still young, expect secondary flavors to emerge.

Dark berries, and black currant, slight Brett on the nose which blew off. More of a primary fruit wine, not getting any secondaries. (Out of mag) will drink for 10 yrs.

Nose of cedar, tobacco, chocolate, and some red fruit. Mouthfeel was incredible - smooth, full bodied, perfect balance. Finish was medium-long. This wine was absolutely stellar, and worth the price.

This was the 'wow' wine out of a group of five very good Bordeaux reds. Deep and powerful with a tremendous grip that never threatens to turn harsh. It should only improve with time as those tannins continue to evolve. A wonderful and memorable wine.

Very good youthful Bordeaux that should get better with a little more age. Currants, cherries and pencil lead with crushed granite and solid finish

MW Institute 2010 Bordeaux Tasting (Sydney, Australia): Meaty/bretty aromas, blackcurrant, toast and coffee. The fruit on the palate shows the same savoury/bretty notes as the nose - which for the time being adds complexity, but some bottles may bloom over time.

Espresso bean, coffee, licorice, chocolate and jammy blackberries create the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is lush, opulent and rich, there is a touch of heat in the powerful, ripe, oaky finish.

55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Fell short of the outstanding wines this estate made in 2005 and 2009. Similar quality to the 2003 which I had recently and better than the 2001. This had a minty note with plum and leather. Nice mineral quality. Firm tannins. 92-93 points.

2010 Bordeaux UGC Chicago (The Drake Hotel, Chicago IL): Nose: This nose is certainly on the tight side, but reveals tones of dark red cherries, a solid dose of new oak, leather tones, and spice box.

More lead pencil and coffee on the palate, as well as cassis, rich black cherries, spicy black pepper and clove. This is delicious already, with nice richness, firm structure, and great balance. Fantastic-

Nose offers very ripe fruits indeed it lacks a little freshness and is perhaps overripe; nice flavour, quite well-made though a bit alcoholic on the finish. Tannic. Benefit of the doubt here. 91-93.

Concentrated with ripe fruit, cassis, tannin and wood, this plush textured, tannic wine, finishes with chocolate, cassis and coffee flavors. 90-93 Pts.
