An Opulenz etwas verloren an Eleganz gewonnen, Trinkfenster -2026 (+)

2023 Athens Wine Event; 12/8/2023-12/9/2023 (Athens, Greece): Tasted blind and followed in the footsteps of the Perfect 1990 Montrose ( Papies 99) . Felt a bit like the new world version for a hot 1990s vintage like a 1994 and that ripeness sort of stole away from the beauty of this almost. Touch of a burn on The fruit. A wine we never really came friends and even a dozen years ago green and not spoiled didn’t get along with it ( Papies 93) . This is not a poor wine in any measure but really fat this level we expected the supercalifrajilisticexpialidocious level of elegance. 93-94

A truly great wine. Big name, big price but also real big wine. Of course very Pomerol ! This is fresh, herbal ,minty , chewy and long. Nowhere too heavy or stewed. Needed air and blossomed to remarkable juice. Much money but f... ing good !

I am coming back to this after 2 hours with my 2nd and last bottle. Opened for 3 hours. Color is deep garnet with an orange rim. On the nose: Plum, sour cherry, cassis and some graphite. On the palate: Plum, cherry, a bit of dark chocolate and hint of licorice. Mouthfeel is lovely and silky. It’s very good but needs to be great. I score a bit higher than before but still well below other years I’ve had.

Decanted for 30-45 minutes, and then drank over 2.5 hours. Great nose. Silken texture. Cherry on the palate. Clearly an Italian, but it was great to drink next to an old Bordeaux (‘82) to experience the similar (and differences). An amazing wine.

WOTN for me in a great lineup. The nose was just incredible - sweet cherry fruit that carried over to the palate, layers of goodness follow, all working in perfect harmony. Not a big wine or too ripe/rich. The silky smooth finish just went on and on. Was surprised how elegant and subtle this vintage was. You can see the comparison to the premium right bank Bordeaux wines, but this Masseto has its own unique style to it. Was a nice change for me and just really hit the spot tonight.

Very good, an amazing wine, expectations were high for the tasters, who were familiar with Massetto. It was fabulous. Changed character throughout evening. Very nice bouquet, hints of cherry, really went well with our steaks and veggies.

We opened this magnum with a bunch of friends at home. It was decanted for slightly over 2 hours. When I first poured it, I was concerned as it had a "not all there" bouquet to it but this was gone after an hour of time. A fair bouquet of berries and I found quite a lot of honey in the taste. Very light on the overall palate. I love a good merlot but this was not outstanding and I think it may be time to drink these up if you have them.

Being a Masseto sucker it was somehow hard to admit that this bottle of 1995 didn't impress me compared to several other outstanding bottles of Masseto from the nineties.
It indeed was a good medium to full bodied wine with a lovely nose of sweet fruits, but it never showed the wow-factor that this wine earlier has shown me.
This was the first bottle of Masseto that didn't impress me. 90 points.

A Great weekend in Athens; 2/12/2011-2/13/2011 (Athens, Greece): We thought this was the angelus and in a way a bit disappointed not to get more from such a wine. Still away from that it is very smooth and supple wine , with class and elegance. Wanted more. 93-94, drink now

Wine Dinner at 12B (Vancouver, BC): Decanted for 2 hours then put back in the bottle and served 3 hours later. Most mature smelling wine besides the ‘90 Pegau so far tonight with notes of cherries, plums and earth. It’s soft in the mouth with flavours of cherries, wood, chocolate and earth. Its velvety texture and perfect balance make this a very easy to drink and extremely enjoyable wine. I could drink this on its own any night of the week. This is beautifully aged merlot. Drink or hold. Outstanding.

This bottle of the '95 drank younger than my previous bottle noted below. A beautifully balanced and elegant wine with a very fine spicy complexity on the finish. Masseto is the real deal.

Needed a good hour to begin to show its charms. Beautifully aged merlot with real breed and complexity. A medium-bodied wine with a finish that just dances across the tongue with notes of cherry bark and dark fruits. Hard to stop drinking this beauty which seems perfectly mature now. Not unlike a great aged Pomerol.

Cellar sale turned into a great burgundy tasting: Super silky and rich merlot, intense and balanced, ... yet it just didn't really do it for me. On any other night a wine like this would usually have me savouring every sip, and I hope my right bank 05 bordeauxs would one day turn into something like this … but somehow I find myself wanting to go back to the quarter glass of Trapet I had left.

Dark ruby, purple color with bright red at the rim., Bright nose of jammy black cherries, chocolate, and cassis. The wine is wonderful now. Best after 90 minutes of aeration. This wine will only be nicer as the tannins are fully integrated. Merlot does

Dinner with Tom, Lili and Keith et al at 360. Wowsa! What a wine. Probably the best Massetto I've had. Dark black fruits and smoke. Lush tanninis, perfectly balanced, long finish. #2 WOTN.

Drank this with a hot chicken curry with all the fixin's (crushed bacon, peanuts, HB eggs, toasted cocoanut and three kinds of chutney). Plenty big enough to handle the load. This was my last bottle and I was saving it for something important, but chose if for Open-That-Bottle-Night (ala WSJ wine column) although I didn't do it that exact night. Fair anount of fine, loose sediment, but slow hand pouring kept it mostly in the bottle. My six original bottles were an extravagance (with some next-morning buyer remorse) after one of Paesanos wine dinners. Most were drunk soon after, but I kept this bottle for many years waiting for an occasion. Glad I didn't wait too long, but made the occasion fit the wine.

Tasted at blind horizontal 1995 Super Tuscan tasting at the Bungalo. Intense nose of plum, currants, cherry, vanilla and oak. Full body, moderately tannic, supple fruit flavors on palate similar to nose. Excellent mid-palate and long, supple finish. This wine is to be cherished over the next 15 years.

From PnP, this was stellar, but we let it decant another 1-1.5 hrs and then it really opened up.
Very well balanced with earth tones and herbs and a finish that lingered. Absolutely lovely bottle. Wish I had more of the 95 around. WOTN for me.
Opened next to an 84 DCV Lake, which was fire but yet unfair to the DCV because of how good the Masseto was showing that night.
