  • Translucent garnet, almost tawny colored. Dried cherries and some earthy funk on the nose. With time in the glass, the funk blew off yielding more of a cherry hard candy aroma with a hint of old leather in the background reminiscent of an old office. Medium-to-medium-light body, medium-plus acid. Very tangy red fruit with some orange rind or perhaps blood orange on the finish. Elegant.

  • Impeccable storage from the source purchased 8 months prior to opening.

Beautiful. Dark blue flowers. Feminine underarm odor. Wet northern earth.

On opening: Pomegranate nose and first sip. Big tannin. Long delicious beautiful finish. Undoubtedly Goodfellow. Freshly picked half-ripe Raspberry in the finish 1 minute after. Raw Kula beets cooking. Such good acid. Marcus is the man.

Light and clear mouthfeel, big acid and depth. So transparent and concentrated at the same time.

Seriously stinky barnyard funk. Almost Mosel summer funk. So much depth.

It’s like Marcus made exactly what western Oregon smells like. Stinky salty clean flowery rotting earth funk.

Total balsamic nose after an hour.

This isn’t Brett. This isn’t flawed. This is what so many Oregon producers are spending all their resources trying to do away with, the reality of their climate and land.

Underripe orange peel. Wailuku pomelo. Delicious sweet fruit coming out after air, tell-tale Goodfellow.

No watery weight or sensation like 2011’s earlier this year, happily in it’s beautiful exhibition of its bouquet and flavors.

Day two way more fruit on the nose. More orange Christmas-time spice and length on the palate.

Day three, absolutely incredible. More orange peel, more sweet grapefruit. Perfectly ripe I’ao lilikoi. Such a long finish. Fresh strawberry lemonade. Earthy meaty funk is in perfect interplay. Serious damage. All the fruit all the acid all the playful herbs and spices on the long and deep, detailed and evolving finish. All in place.

    On its side until opening.

  • Stood up for several weeks. Decanted although very little sediment. Now 2.5h after decant. Translucent garnet color. Aromas of lovely ripe red cherries, hints of bark and sous bois. Palate w ripe red cherries, bark, some herbs, and just a hint of sous bois. Excellent acids on an elegant, medium bodied frame. Elegant texture. Mild tannins come up toward the back end. Nice finish of tart red cherries, and bark. Drinking well now and giving a lot of pleasure. Not the most complex wine but the balance and elegance are lovely. Given the amount of fruit, acids and mild tannins, I suspect that this can improve over the next several years. Open next bottle in 2-5 yes.

  • Bright red fruit aromas on the nose with lots of stemmy freshness. Palate was quite tart and disjointed at the start with not much else. Opted to decant it. With an hour the palate started filling in. Red and black fruits began showing, Rohan duck, hoisin, carob, rhubarb, autumn leaves, crushed gravel.

Some 2011 Oregon Pinots have felt a touch weird lately. Much thinner palates than a year or two ago. With air they fill out some, but not fully. Not sure if they're going though a shut down phase or quickly fading, I suspect and hope the former given how much they seem to open up with air. I think I'll hold off on opening more for a while.

ABV: label notes 13%, Marcus noted 12.8% in his library release email

  • A bit of bricking around the edges. Needed some air upon opening, so gave it a decant. Tart red berry, minerals and a decent amount of stems. Drank with family over a few hours and it just kept getting better.

  • Medium dark garnet with red berry nose. Open over night, tart red berry, light fruit, medium body with some chewy tannins. Ripe strawberries dominate with some red raspberries along for additional flavor and acid, a nice earthy mineral element adds complexity. Drinking nicely in an acid forward style keeping the fruit lively, and should appeal to those that like some fruit, treads a middle ground between the AFWE and fruit forward style as long as you like a strong acid component, lovely entry level Pinot.

  • Has opened up a bit as the 11s are starting to do; somewhat bright red fruit at the core with some earthiness and a hint of graham cracker towards the finish.

  • Lean, tart, cranberry fruit and orange peel flavors with a juicy texture. Relatively simple but well made and good with food.

  • A visit to Matello (Mcminnville, Oregon): Very taut and square. Good strawberry notes on the palate and nose. Great balance between that fruit and the square profile. Neat.

  • Night 2: This was very tight initially, so it sat in a kitchen cabinet for about 30 hours. The wait paid off. The nose is alive with bright red fruits, red flowers, vanilla, and light traces of smoked meat, wood and fresh mushroom. Really energetic on the palate with strawberry and cranberry flavors carried by bright, refreshing acidity and light, dusty tannin. This is delicious and easy to drink tonight, whereas last night it was somewhat muted and having a lot of grip. Excellent value with ample air time.

  • Very light, cranberry-raspberry, vanilla, and tea on the nose. Zippy tart cherry palate with sweet fruit, some spice, thin body. Good, and a fair companion to chicken roulade and duxelles.

  • Pinot Weekend - Second Willamette Valley Trip; 8/30/2013-9/2/2013 (Dundee, OR): Lighter styled, with slightly angular acidity with a tart cherry profile on the palate. Finishes with some tea leaves and spice. Quite narrow on the palate. Should be an excellent food wine for the price. 88

  • Strawberries and vanilla stand out here, along with other soft, subtle tones that really show how enjoyable a "cool vintage" pinot can be. As I drink these early 2011's, they're beginning to remind me more and more of 2007's, an underrated vintage. This wine will drink well young, but not this young--it needs at least another year or two before it really shines, although it was more approachable at this stage than the 2010 Souris tasted along side this one. Another great offering from Marcus Goodfellow, whose wines offer some of some of the best quality-to-price ratios in Oregon pinot.

  • Opened one of these early to get a read on Marcus' 2011 pinots. Seems pretty closed right now and I didn't have the patience to give it a second night. Started showing aromatics at the 1.5 hour mark that were pleasing and not unlike the 2010 Lazarus. Haven't talked to Marcus about his 2011s yet to see how he'd differentiate them from 2010. In any case, a great value on a well made wine. Stylistically right what I expected but seems to have a case of the bottle shock blues for the time being.

  • Very lean on opening. Let half the bottle sit for several hours, and it gained some weight. Tart red fruit, tingly acidity, apparent whole cluster, little oak. Quite nice if you like this style. Needs some air/cellar time.
