In a good place right now. Classic nose, some acidity initially but that disappeared with the food. Well structured and just got better and better. Exceeded my expectations by far since I don't remember the last bottle nearly as good.

well now, this was very good (at least relative to expectations)... med+ or full-minus body, but with acidity and lift to carry it, dark red fruit, not a lot of complexity (umami etc) but just well structured and good for food or on its own... gave it a 92 but could have given 93... feels like its just into the zone but has plenty of time left (15 years more??)

What a delightful Volnay! The flavour profile leans toward the high toned, red fruited, but doesn't lack depth and there's a real intensity & good length to the beautifully taught & impeccably balanced medium bodied palate. Immediately enjoyable on opening, but notably improved over 3 or 4 hours drinking time (not decanted). I think I pick up something of a 2011 vintage character; but it's handled very well. The pronounced acidity makes it a food wine for me, but it's so elegant and charming that I'd happily drink it by itself. I don't understand the 'rich & fat' descriptor used in a review below - a few point in that direction, but this wasn't what I was getting from the wine. (My first D'Angerville, a part from the Domaine du Pellican Jura's which, FWIW, I adore - & think I can pick up a 'house style' - must try more of their Burgundies & then will know if this is nonsense or not ;) 2026 end to the drinking window seems conservative

Totally Burgundy, feint cherries, forest floor and some mushroom on the nose - delicate red / blue fruit, nice weight and balance and then a touch of stalky savoury character - super fine powdery tannins - probably at it's peak but no rush - 4 out of 5 - very enjoyable

Some nice Burgundies (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Pretty clearly red Burgundy, and the very easy-going red fruit made me think this was a very young wine; likely 2017. Not too concentrated on the palate with a bit of dilution, this is very light and (after the reveal) surprisingly light on the oak use. A readily accessible wine to drink now; there's not much more weight for further aging.

Decanted for 15ish minutes and drank outside on a relatively cold night in Brooklyn. The bottle was downright cold by the end of the night. Nose was perfect Volnay dark cherries. Taste was long with the slightest bit of alcohol that didn't feel totally integrated...something I've never tasted before in D'Angerville wines. Very good albeit something was missing. Perhaps it's still a bit closed and starting to come out of its shell. Perhaps we tried it too soon. I've had the 2011 Caillerets from D'Angerville and preferred that to the Champans here for what it’s worth.

Woodsy! Beautiful bouquet of pine smoke, roasted red meat, turnips, sassafras, cherry, wild blueberry, white pepper and a little blue flowers and nutmeg. Kinda rough on the palate, but this opens up and gains a some polish, thick and rich, not quite velvety but it has its moments. Long meaty and earthy finish, fruit persists nicely, but it is not super fresh, more candied or cooked. This is a burly and raucous Volnay, but characterful and complex. I would drink it in the next 5 years or so, as it may dry out.

Nice strucure and acidity. Not the floral notes or grace of a typical Volnay. Power and tannin more reminiscent of a Pommard. Massive concentration of fruit was unexpected. While drinking well could use 1-2 years cellar time to be optimal.

Light ruby. Mostly black cherry with a trace of menthol. Medium weight, surprising ripeness and amplitude. A swirl of fruit and earth with very good acidity. Open and forthcoming now, but a bit simple and unsophisticated. Maybe not the pinnacle of Angerville Volnay but certainly unbowed by the challenges of the vintage. One of the most enjoyable 2011 Burgundies I've had.
More floral tones, spice, and piquant red fruit the second night. The green increased as well, but not in a disproportionate or disturbing way. I remain impressed in the context of other wines from this vintage.

Blind Pinots (Prairie Grass Cafe): Blind and paired with the '13. Lighter nose with candied red cherry with notions of herb and florals. I bought six bottles of the '11 d'Angerville Champans at a Hart Davis Hart auction before I read all of the wine geek complaints on wine talk bulletin boards concerning the 2011 Burgundy vintage re: the Green Meanies. Thank goodness I missed those posts, or I might have passed on these bottles. The 2011 Champans from d'Angerville that I've consumed have been nothing short of stellar. Amazing purity of fruit, red fruit, spice, amazing nose, and just a wonderful fine. Not sure of the disconnect with other red Burgs from '11, but these are outstanding.

First of six bottles purchased at auction. I was concerned after reading the wine board notes re: the "green" 2011 Burgundy vintage, but this had really lovely, pure red fruit. My anxiety to approach the vintage 2011 has been tempered by this very good Champans. (I feel relieve). The wine has a very nice nose with violet, licorice, tobacco, smashed strawberries and this slightly bitter aroma of almonds paired to a kind of light roasted pépins. The mouth shows black cherry, big plum and some iron (like in Morey) and is more on the acid and tough side ( means not sweet and not lush). Tannins are a little drying and on the nervous side. Today it is drinking very well, even if it is still a bit young.
Compared to the 2008 Champans drunk yesterday, and which felt as if it was from 1987, there is no doubt about which one of the two is the better wine.

My first experience with this wine, and despite it being not such a great vintage (though I know the proprietor is quite fond of it personally), I really enjoyed it. It took a while to open up, and it was really quite a nice Volnay. Not sure if it was worth the $88, but happy to have tried.

Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): A bit of brown chemical oddness on the nose that is borne out on the palate as well. Ladybugs? It's certainly not a green wine, but it's not ripe and the alcohol is disjointed; I could get behind that, if I weren't so bothered by that odd tone on the palate.
Very floral, white chocolate, cherry liquor, rose pedal, rhubarb, mild spice and nice tension. This wine was much better on day 2 which leads me to believe I'm approaching this early. Delicious, but be sure to decant or wait to drink.

La Paulée de San Francisco - Grand Tasting (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Tasting, brief note. Nice floral aromatics with black and red fruit and good balance on plate. More firm than when tasted at the domaine last summer. Certainly needs time.

Bird's Eye View of 2011 Burgundy-The 2014 La Paulee Grand Tasting (Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco): Riper cherry fruit than the other 3 wines. Slightly rounder and larger too, although this is still on the lighter side. Will probably be approachable earlier than any of the others. Delicious, excellent potential.

A step up over the 1er Cru bottle easily with more refinement and polish. Young but very tasty right now.

Day One in Burgundy: Fourrier, Mugnier, d'Angerville, Roulot (Cote d'Or): Tasting at domaine. Black and red cherry with lots of floral support but also a slightly meaty character. Somewhat feminine but with sneaky structural power. This will need the most cellar time of the wines I tried today.
