Purchased on release for under 100 CDN. Started with 9 in the cellar, opened 4 of my own bottles, tasted this wine 13 times..... and have followed this for 27 years. The 1993 started to open somewhat, depending on your storage temperature, around about 2017. This a birthday wine with Canada Prime Strip steaks and Superbe Bernaise faite Maison. Currently very dark ruby with minimal bricking and a wild intensity of alpine berries with a swish of sois bois on the nose. Spicy raspberries with sensational grip on the palate - finishes long , taut and savage. Still a young beast and very 1993. Best 2028-2050.
Holiday Burgundy Lunch: Reticent at first, then after about 20 minutes in the glass the sweet majesty unfolded. A complex spicebox with pure fruit and terrific delineation. A top class reference standard Burgundy. Served blind.

Rousseau Chambertin v Rousseau Clos de Beze vertical battle - WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME!? (Jonathan Club): holy perfume on the nose - fruit is crazy on it with a high toned floral perfume. The texture is going wild on the palate - the minerality is bouncy and fresh - but the fruit seems a touch hollow. The nose took awhile to come around as it was a bit musty and funky but the palate never quite turned around. Not the best bottle we’ve had of it. Unfortunate as this bottle was purchased on release by the person that brought it.

Not quite at the level of the previous bottle I opened (which also was at a Christmas lunch, maybe 8-10 years ago), but still pretty damn amazing. Precision, salinity, red fruits, complexity, intensity, harmony -- it's all there. Cellared since original release.

The 1993 is just astounding, arresting, complete. Simultaneous impact and lightness of touch. Such a beautiful and cool nose, fresh, medium intensity, with a panoply of the most gorgeous, pure, multidimensional fresh wild raspberry, game, potpourri notes. And then there’s what really pushes this over the top: the palate, expanding endlessly, showing something a little different moment to moment. Attention-grabbing, both in the moment and upon reflection.

I brought this to the Paulee Gala and it did not disappoint. The nose was so seductive and the palate was filled with gorgeous secondary flavors underlaid by very pretty fruit. Really a remarkable wine. Over the past year, it was my great fortune to taste the 90, 91 and 93 vintages of this wine and that won't happen again, but it does allow me to know that this wine, at 25-30 years old is one of my all time favorites. If I had to rank them, I'd put the 91 on top for it's slightly greater power with all the other goodies, and this one just a hair below it. Such beautiful wine.
2019 Birthday wines: Nick's wine - served double blind - was ruby, moving to garnet in colour. A beautiful bouquet, the sort of wine you don't feel the need to drink, just merely wishing to sit in a corner sniffing over the next hour or so. Layered and multi-dimensional. Florals, spices, warm earth, largely red berries and cherries, truffles, tobacco etc etc. On palate, a great Grand Cru, transcending Gevrey-Chambertin typicity. "The spice and acidity of a Vosne Grand Cru, or of a great Musigny", noted Rauno. Dense and palate coating. Very detailed and complex. Power with balance and incredible intensity. "Sitting on its optimal drinking plateau for a few years", as Nick said. Finishing the last part glass two days later, the bouquet had moved more secondary - more earth, tobacco and some old leather - as had the palate, The fruit was also more preserved than fresh red berries, with the autumn leaf and dry brushwood elements more prominent. My wine of the year.
Light red center. Superb aromatically-red berries, soil, green herbs, and definite secondary/tertiary high tones. Not huge but pleasingly sappy, perfectly weighted acidity. Delicious but perhaps not quite as perfect in the mouth as on the nose since with air, a note of fennel sticks out a bit. OK, so let's call it "just" outstanding rather than revelatory, but the scent is sublime. It is remarkably open and fresh, close to its peak, I'd imagine.

A masterpiece. Highly aromatic and expressive, developed and nuanced but fresh and clean. Real Rousseau purity. Effortless is the term that comes to mind. Superior to the last bottle from the same generous source. Fruit and palate are completely balanced and fully integrated from every angle. Manhandles the ‘93 CSJ in the next glass and decidedly superior to the ‘90 Bèze. Producer, vineyard, and vintage absolutely deliver on this bottle. Spectacular. 97-98.

A lot of earthy tones in here. Truffles. Big and almost brooding. Similar to other marquee 93s I have had recently this is young and strong. Black fruits with plenty of stuffing yet there is real nuance and complexity. Awesome wine.

Well endowed black and red cherry only beginning to develop the hallmark Rousseau Chambertin earthy rusticity. Amazingly fresh and clean. Served in a flight of ‘93, ‘91, ‘85 and definitely showing the youngest, although I think the ‘91 and ‘85 are both near perfection. Wonderful, and figure there is still upside here.

Coche-Dury and Domaine Rousseau Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Opened alongside the equally wonderful 1989. This is all black fruit that is slowly starting to evolve ever-so-gracefully, with roasted meat and exceptional concentration and length. Less aromatically complex vs the 1989, but this is more dense and concentrated.

Coche and Rousseau Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago, IL): Tasted in a 89/93/01 flight. Aromatically this is generous, if a bit less refined than the spellbinding '89 nose. Aromas of big rich meaty black cherry with some toast influence. On the palate this has great richness and power with crazy amounts of intense meaty spice. The fruit is at once sweet and ripe, and savory and earthy. Elegant, precise finish.

Coche, Rousseau and more (RPM Steak): Wow. My kind of Burgundy. A packed blackberry fruit driven aroma with animal, and scorched earth elements. Concentrated and beautifully pure on the palate with silky smooth textures and delicate black mineral spices. Wonderful underlying sweetness to the riper fruits, but sleek and seamless too. For me, entering its prime hedonistic drinking window where loads of up front fruit, yet balanced and complex.

incredible wine. Slow oxed for 5 hours and consumed in glass over 3. The depth on this wine is unparalleled. The nose is filled with this wonderful perfume of flowers and sweet red fruit. There is a purity in this wine that makes the wine flow so effortlessly. Copious amounts of elegant fresh fruit with a clean bright intensity on the finish. Still incredibly youthful and needs some time, but wow it is AMAZEBALLS right now.

Recess: Astounding wine. This is a wow from the aromas alone. Such incredible depth here, with layers of red and dark fruit, earth, truffles, a faint (clean) leathery savouriness, and sweeter, brighter floral and spicy notes all come together into an amazing scent that just keeps getting more powerful with air. The palate is unreal - powerful and broad, yet so elegant and light on its feet, with each sip resonating for minutes. Flavour without weight.

Rousseau Chambertin dinner. 2nd place for me, right behind 1993 Beze. Nice garnet color. Also very pure with a bit more concentration but less delicacy than 1993 Beze. More autumnal. Long, Chambertin backbone. Slightly better bottle than one tried in August. From Jeffrey.

Outstanding nose that just burst from the glass. Somehow from a foot away, the perfume was more noticeable than the Beze or CSJ. Red fruit, spice, cinnamon, earth, mushrooms and dried roses. Excellent freshness and energy on the palate. Red fruit, spice and floral notes dominate against a delicious earthy back drop. This kept improving for 3 hours. I didn't want to finish. I can still taste the finish.

A good but not great showing for the 93 Chambertin. Surprisingly, the 93 CSJ was a wide margin above it for current drinkability. Grand cru 93's are a tough group - its not clear to me how long it will take for them to come around.

Popped, poured and drank over an hour or so. So much power here. Aromatics were a mix of red and blue berry fruit with darker floral and some firm earth. Palate was a bit tight and showing its mineral structure, but still gave up some pretty fruit flavors. Very densely packed wine and in need of a decant or more time in the cellar.

Medium-deep dark garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward, attractive and complex & multi-layered nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark black cherries, blackberries & dark plums with dusty, earthy overtones, floral notes of roses, cedar, spice notes of cloves, minerals, dried herbs with secondary notes of sous-bois, under-brush, mint, cocoa, leather and aged tobacco. Full to medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of intense & dense, still developing, smooth & polished textured, elegant, well balanced & focused, complex, lush & rich, ripe fruit flavors of dark sweet cherries, blackberries, blueberries & black plums with earthy, spices, minerals, herbs, some mint & beefy/meaty. Long lingering silky smooth finish which seemed to last for minutes. Drinks quite well at present but has the depth, structure and fruit to continue with its development with further aging. A classic, amazing & impressive wine.

Now to the reds and first word again was wow. Similar to a bottle tasted last year. This is a bit more approachable now than the Beze. Elegant, red and dark fruits. Sous bois. Silk, iron fist in a velvet glove, Drinking so well now, but undoubtedly, will continue to dazzle in the years ahead.

Side by side of 1993 Rousseau Beze and Chambertin. Both were good, but Chambertin was clearly the better of the two. A great duo, and while both were definitely ready for drinking, there is no hurry with these 93's.

Rotating Dinner Series-Wines Jimmy Likes (Acadia, Chicago IL): Nose: Stunning and breathtaking with a nose that requires you to stop and pay attention as something profound is about to be said. The complexity is nearly overwhelming with clay, earth, dark red fruits, minerals, red berries, dark red cherries, and roses just seemingly coming from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The feel is ever so polished and regal with a refined sense. All of that is backed up by glorious tones of clay, earth, dark red fruits, minerals, red berries, and dark red cherries.
Overall: A truly stupendous wine. This was firing on every possible cylinder and just left me stupefied.
La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (New York, NY): Brief Paulee tasting note. incredibly fresh black fruit aromas with big spice and animale hints. Blackberry and plum flavors combine perfectly with meaty spice and lots of power and structure. Long and powerful with a finish that never seemed to end.

Dark red, clear with some rust at the edge. Wonderful nose of black and red fruit, earth and game. Touches of roses and wild strawberry. Palate more evolved than CDB but with wonderful persistence and dimension that seemed to grow in the glass. Excellent although the CDB wins by a couple of points.

La Paulee Gala (San Francisco CA): La Paulee gala. Aromas seemed big and brooding at first, then just exploded with black fruit and braised meat. Intense powerful fruit on palate just starting to hint at secondary development. Much like the nose, the flavors seemed to start somewhat monolithically, then just burst with energy, spice and nuance. Long and powerful.

Tasting of Chambertin and Clos-de-Bèze (Amarone (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)): We had this one alongside the 1996. Très Bourgogne, très Rousseau. So young in the glass when just poored. Annual DBGCBU: Tasted alongside 89 Chambertin and had similar notes but looked a little lean and yet to fully unwind. Not anywhere near the 89 today and I'm not sure if it will fill out enough over time. This was still an excellent wine and a very special occassion to be able to taste two great wines side by side. The score is reflecting the experience today and I'm sure if I have it again years later it would be completely different. Out of all the Rousseau wines I've tried over the years the 93's seem to be the most backward.

I should start this note with a disclaimer: I love the Rousseau style. This wine had everything great vintages of this wine should have - an open, complex, mineral-driven nose with ripe fruit and buffering acidity. The balance is breath-taking. You could get lost in the aromatics - spice, toasted bread, fresh earth. Saddly this was my last bottle. It is in no danger of fading.

incredible wine.

Yet another stunning vintage of Rousseau Chambertin. This has high acidity but it is matched by the fabulous material with great dark cherry and spice notes and great silky intensity and elegant finesse. More to come here as well. 96+

1993 Burgundy dinner. Spices and stems led to some DRC guesses. Very clean profile with great intensity and structure, but guessing this needs more time to show its best.

Tight but opened somewhat with airtime. Young but this likely to never be a particularly well balanced wine.

Required time to open, but when it did was quite expressive. One more level of evolution here, and enough substance to last for a long time.

In mag. Very Rousseau like. Elegant complex nose. Meat, earth. Perfect balance. Better than the 06 Dujac Chambertin served alongside for me.

Chambertin / Chambertin-Clos de Bèze dinner (Christie's Directors' Boardroom, 8 King Street, London, UK): A majestic Chambertin, quite tannic as many 1993's are, deep and stately, wonderfully fresh and lively, riper fruit than the Clos de Bèze 1993, very elegant, linear and pure, a very stylish wine, beautiful.

So pure and elegant, refined and noble wine. Not terribly dense but so excellent. '93 is a vintage that needs time, and I would not touch any of these at this point, as they will improve.

Part of a flight with the CSJ and beze. All 3 were so young, displaying delicious, tart, red fruit. So hard to find fault with any of them except that they needed another 5-10 years.

Obviously more open than the 1996. Great wine, charming, sexy, open. It even evolved in the glass, but not so beautifully as the 1996. 19,5/20

Somber nose with GREAT depth and richness on the palate - intensity. Taunt with structure, and while young this is beginning to pull back the blinds, as its approaching the beginning window. Darker fruited. Wait to be fully rewarded.
