Diebolt-Vallois Fleur de Passion 2006 is exquisitely elegant. Brioche, cool and lean fruit in the form of green epple, slightly sweet lemon and cool, lean yellow stonefruit. The slightest touch of nuts, and well-integrated mineral notes. Light as a feather and velvety on the palate. Beautifully balanced and elegant. Complex in a light and etheral manner. Long. An absolute delight, and lucky to have some 2008 lying around as well

Champagnes at Quan Xiang Yuan: Wanted to share one of my favourite producers so brought this along. Round and ripe fruit while still having a good dose of acidity so it was a tough one to call, but someone managed to nail this as a BdB. Very good but preferred the 2004 and 2012 which were more chiselled and less overt in comparison.

il gran finale del Barolo di compleanno (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): This was opened and shared for about 12 people, so only really a glass to evaluate. The nose is mature and balanced with poached pears, red apples, toast, vanilla beans, brioche, hazelnuts, almond paste, biscuits, and custard. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and a bit honeyed with well-integrated, high acidity. Looking at the notes of others, this really confirms my suspicions when I had the wine that it was a bit advanced for what it should be. This is fun and balanced, but it lacks an extra gear that would really add in layers of intrigue and complexity.

During a Domaine visit. We were fortunate enough to being showcased the 2012, 2013 (not yet released) and the 2006. We loved this wine and it confirms to me that this is one of the great Blanc de Blancs of all of Champagne. The 2012 was very complex and creamy with flowers, tons of fruit and minerals. You can see the quality of the vintage (96-97). The 2013 was very classy too as it merges the crisp vintage with the generous Cramant terroir making it a wine for the long haul with amazing flowery notes, herbs, minerals, green apples. I will be looking out for it on the release next year for sure (96). Finally the 2006 which is fully ready to drink and evoked some wow’s from all of us as there was a great butter nose of shortbread intermixed with the citrus. A warmer vintage but it carries its richness well, so seductive (96+).

Pale to mid straw. Finely chalky nose and attack with a fine, creamy mousse. Some crème pat too. Nicely focused and precise front end, loosening a little to reflect some development and vintage character through the finish with just a hint of dosage. A tiny bit more advanced than a bottle a couple of years ago, but really I should have heeded my advice and left it another five plus years. ****

Surprisingly open and showed signs of maturity. Boiled pasta, dry sherry, clementine and pears on the nose.
Even more developed on the palate with again dry sherry and pear but also grape fruit and pilsner beer. Smooth acid on the midpalate and a long medium bodied finish.
Shows much more maturity than the -05 I had 19 months ago. Based on this bottle I would drink the -06 first before I would drink the -05s. Excellent wine.

Certainly coming around nicely with cellaring, this wine is beautifully vibrant and creamy, yet utterly balanced and elegant. This wine manages to balance power and elegance in a structured and lovely way. The velvety fruit is mouth coating and are adjoined by sweet medium toast, brioche, abundant flowers and a creamy velvety mousse. There is enough texture and structure to make this wine last for many years to come. With a length on the finish lasting some 50+ seconds, there is no other word to describe this effort than 'profound'. Certainly a true masterpiece. Very very nice. (score is 95+)

Always liked this and just the name evokes so much emotion. Light, ethereal and ever so caressing the mouth, it is filled with sweet Cramant chardonnay fruit and all its smoothness. Lime, peach and orange and more. A superb apperitif style of champagne that also went well with buttered white toast filled with shaved fresh summer black truffles.

Chris' Housewarming (Hamilton, ON): Very lovely grower Champagne here from Diebolt-Vallois. The nose is highly autolytic with abundant dough character. Also lemon juice, raw sugar, florals. Vibrant and creamy, yet balanced and elegant. The 06 Fleur de Passion delivers a lovely experience. The mouth coating, velvety fruit accompanied by sweet brioche, flowers and a silky mousse. Texture and structure is there to make this effort even more integrated with some time in the cellar. The final dot over the i is a lovely length on the finish, lasting some 50+ seconds. A profound wine. Very nice.

(Disgorged in 2013) Light yellow colour and a stream of fine and tiny bubbles. Fresh nose filled with summer flowers, bread and licorice root. Acidic and youthful palate with a bittersweet lime juice finish, but it needs more time to integrate. Will probably be better within a year, but will probably evolve nicely for the next decade or so. Best 2016-2026.

Enjoyed alongside 2006 Guiborat Fils Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut from the same village (Cramant). The contrast is huge. The nose here is full of torrefaction, coffee and oak with certain saltiness and ripe Chardonnay fruit. On the palate rich and opulent, yet bone dry. Very persistent mousse. Extremely powerful, broad-shouldered and firm, not trying to hide its oak-aging at all. Once again plenty of torrefaction and ripe fruit that is surprisingly dark in tone. Vinous and waxy, nothing delicate or restrained about this, but I have to say it is quite impressive in a style that is not very close to my heart. Would be nice to follow its development but for current drinking I would choose the way more classical Guiborat easily.

Dosage 6 gr/l. Vinified in small and used oak casks from Burgundy. Contains old vines 860-45 years) from Cramant. The nose is marked by the oak, aromas of rhum. On the palate very dry attack finishing with a slightly oaky end. Somehow, I would have prefered less oak.

A wonderful vibrant and lovely wine. The 2005 Fleur de Passion delivers an array of lemon zest, lime, tangerine and a whiff of pineapple at the back-end nose. Accompanied by almonds, brioche and white toast, the nose is indeed intriguing. The palate is nicely balanced and has a striking acidity which puts the dot over the i. The mousse is fine tuned and almost velvety. There is enough structure and texture to make this wine age well for several years. Integration will improve with further cellaring, but the wine is certainly lovely tonight too. Served from magnum.

Jura, Puligny Montrachet and Champagne; 9/8/2013-9/20/2013: I note to my surprise that CT members have already been buying this: It was served to us today as a preview of a wine not yet commercially available. Much brighter, more forward and exciting than the 2005, with superb racy acidity and a robust but beautifully crafted mineral structure. And the oak wasn't as obvious. A great future in store. 92P(?)
Light yellow colour with extremely fine tiny bubbles. On the nose there's flint and minerals. Very tight with a vague hint of licorice and citrus. Very youthful on the palate but at the same time very soft and subtle in an unexpected way. First a rough tone of Samarin that quickly opens up with flowers and a long lasting finish.
It will be a joy to follow this Champagne on its journey through the ages!
