  • Coconut, chocolate, dark cherry, wet tobacco, leather. Wrapped tight on day one but significant improvement into day two. Delicious sweet fruits on the attack with damson and dark plum then silky smooth mid-palate with high velvety tannin on the finish. Not sure the fruit will survive the structure in this vintage but I now see the point of this wine. A heavily polished expression of Rioja reflecting the winemaking philosophy but enough here to make me curious to try a fully mature example.

  • Kelvin's wedding at Goodwood Park. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Aired in bottle for about 1.5 hours already.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty oak, dark plums, earth, minerals, fresh leather. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), plush high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of coconut, toasty oak, vanilla milk, dark red plums, black plums, black cherries, earth, emerging leather. Long finish.
Very good quality. Polished rich high quality Gran Reserva made for the ages. Unsurprisingly dominated now by the oak at this stage. Needs time to integrate.

  • During a matter of taste walkabout tasting, so only brief impressions. Well made, non oxidative style, rich texture, good fruit and tannins.

  • Rich and pretty sweet on the nose, spicy and brooding. On the palate big and concentrated with grippy and ripe tannins. Enough acidity. Very good length. Drink or keep. 91-93

  • MasterClass Rioja Gran Reservas at Prowein in Düsseldorf, wine 6 (non-blind): The wine was dark ruby in colour. The nose was closed at first and only opened-up slowly as I swirled the wine in the glass to red fruit, dark berries, chocolate, leather, sage, spices, vanilla and clove. On the palate the smooth and balanced wine showed red fruit, dark berries, sage, coffee, dark chocolate, spices, clove and vanilla, with medium-level acidity, smooth, medium-level tannin and very good length. More modern in style than the previous wine (Eduardo Garrido Garcia Rioja Gran Reserva 2007). I had the Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Gran Reservas on several occasions now and always acknowledged the good quality of these wines, but also always concluded that they do not offer good value for the money.

  • En Premier (Lavinia - Madrid): Dark as hell
    Pure menthol and eucalyptus nose
Stony palate, harsh too? That's not this bottle. Quite delicious and very good for the vintage.
    Time will tell.

    Oscura como el infierno.
    Pura nariz a mentol y a eucalipto.
Boca dura, ¿también áspera? En ningún caso. Esta botella era bien deliciosa y muy buena para la añada.
    El tiempo lo dirá.
