Classic late night pull when things are winding down I decide to go pull a proper bottle to keep things going.
Btl#7815 for those who enjoy those details. I do!
This wine followed up a 2014 E Guigal La Mouline and was a perfect follow up considering the depth and meatiness of this vintage for Hermitage. I bought a case of this wine back in 2017 and it just now starting to come around and enter a window that I consider to be worthy of opening.
Half bottle left for day two so I'll refrain from scoring till then.

4pm. No sediment. Inky, opaque red which barely becomes translucent at the edges. Nose is closed out of the bottle with hints of smoke and sous bois. So well balanced - tannin, acid and fruit in harmony, but not exactly a youthful fruit profile: hint of smoke, bacon. Excellent length but will need a little time to open up.
After 3.5h it is just beginning to open up on the palate. Chocolate, wood, dark fruit, excellent length (going on for at least a minute) and finishing in thyme, tobacco, and the barest hint of mint. It clearly retains its finely tuned balance and is starting to reveal its complexity. Still improving at the 4h mark, I'm going to leave this overnight and come back tomorrow.
Update: 24h after uncorking the bottle, it's beginning to open up. Nose is smoke and tobacco; the palate is still surprisingly primary; excellent length ending on mint. A beautiful wine but likely still improving... I'll check in again in five years...

Chave and Flannery (Chicago, IL): Somehow never chanced upon tasting this bottle (I think it was the last vintage before I really started buying lots of Chave). Anyway, this is actually in a pretty promising spot right now, though it is obviously the wine with the most potential of the lineup tonight simply for being the youngest. It's a bit soft and gentle on the palate right now, but there are definitely some serious tannins on the back end that demonstrate the aging potential here. More red-fruited and lighter in style (especially for Chave), this is closest to the 2014 as far as recent vintage analogues go; the lightness here just feels like something of a bygone age.

At the decade mark this wine has coming a long way since purchased in 17. A more savory/meaty Chave. I would guess this continues to improve in the cellar but at this point it's now in a window that I find on the early side of approachability.

J.L. Chave Hermitage vertical tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Double decanted some hours before. Clear, deep ruby, glowing colour. Classic Syrah nose, spicy, bold and deep. On the palate round, very balanced, beautiful structure. High tannin and acidity that balances the 14,5% abv very well. Deep and dense with a long, fruity and spicy finish. Potential for some more decades. 94++

Quite a dark, plummy purple, the 2013 Chave exudes aromas of bing cherry, red currents, fresh bolete mushrooms, roast chestnut… ends on the barest floral note, very attractive. Light and laser-like, the palate is tart and almost Burgundian, very long with a saline mineral finish. Tremendous potential here, drinking really well but won’t peak for at least ten more years. 93+? At peak.
The wine gains nuance with an hour or two to breath, and also loses a sour note on the midpalate. That sour note is my main reason for being stingy on points.
I would pair this with fettuccini and fall mushrooms, lightly sautéed in butter and a splash of white wine, chopped parsley, tiny bit of chopped shallot and garlic. It would be surreal.

I rarely drink Chave this young, but wanted to try a bottle; didn't disappoint. The nose is explosive with blackberry, plum, violet, a hint of smoke, olive, and game meat. Just a whiff of oak spice, but mostly not apparent on the nose. The palate is dense and concentrate, but with excellent energy; there are plenty of tannins still present though the fruit density mostly soaks them up. There is a hint of sweet oak spice on the finish which I don't love and I suspect will resolve with a bit more age. Overall this is excellent for the vintage and with another 2-3 years should be hitting prime time.

It’s too young - still tight and you sense the tannins. Needs another 5 yrs or so. That being said it’s great - really classy, big and elegant. Somewhat spicy on the finish with hints of bacon fat. Needs time to open up. I prefer this wine to Allemand Reynard because of the greater complexity. Would be fascinating to do a horizontal tasting in a top vintage comprising Allemand Reynard, Chave Hermitage and one or two Guigal Lalas (I have no doubt this occurs fairly regularly).

Decanted only 90 minutes, would have needed at least twice that. Aromas show a meaty side to start with, menthol, moving and getting more complex and aromatic with white pepper, dark fruits violets and herbs. The palate is powerful, full and dense, deep with lots of class, good length and with tannins that are not yet tamed and show a touch of rusticity and youth. A great bottle but a great bottle to be mostly, still needs 4-5 years. 93-94

Beautiful smoky pepper power with lovely floral overlay and a dark fruit base. Blackberries. This is a powerful wine that was very tight when first opened. About an hour in it was still hiding back a bit. Really needs hours in a decanter. We paired with smoky wood grilled New York Strips (at a Francis Mallmann restaurant) and this wine kicked back and demanded a front seat at the affair. On the nose however it was tight. Tighter on nose than palette. Wonderful nutmeg, maybe cinnamon and other spices about an hour and half in.

14.5 abv; deep, somewhat reserved dark red/black fruit, slightly rounded acidity, some herbs and asian spices, hint of pepper, a bit feminine though has plenty of stuffing, with good fine structure. A somewhat brooding and backward wine, needs time; I like this more than the somewhat perplexing 2012.

Similar qualities as the St Joseph, really hard to decipher this as Syrah, menthol, oak prominent, dried red fruit, much more serious with a rich mid, a burly wine with some grain to the tannin rather than the plushness I prefer; good, obviously a baby but this needs to develop a lot more in bottle before judgement is made.

Knightsbridge Annual Holiday Burgundy/Champagne Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. Open 5+ hours but still unyielding. Big fruit, big potential, just no fun here yet.

92-95?

14.5 abv; deep, somewhat reserved dark red/black fruit, slightly rounded acidity, some herbs and asian spices, hint of pepper, a bit feminine though has plenty of stuffing, with good fine structure. A somewhat brooding and backward wine, needs time; I like this more than the somewhat perplexing 2012.

SLDS July 2016: Purple edged. Smoke, cherry, pencil shavings and plum. The palate is ethereal and effortless, the restraint is just fantastic, while the fruit retains its definition and drive. Has everything it needs if it is just given time. Immense class.
