Excitement grows as an 01 Prum is pulled from the cellar and placed in the fridge to chill. It does not disappoint, so full of energy and joy as it is, it’s like a honey drizzled bowl of limes with ginger zest and petrol highlights. Still shows youthful, stacked with body and brightness to balance the fruit and sweetness. Only its seamlessness reveals its 20+ years of maturation. Hard to find any fault here, true to the vintage but truer to the house style. Terrific.
Day 3: This is now really singing! The bouquet has come to life with richness and spice, redolent of honey, ginger, chamomile tea, and pomelo zest. The palate is more overtly sweet as well but with the requisite acidity to balance sugar. Delicious, long finish with a hint of bitterness like an apple skin.
Clearly, not ‘ready’ for peak drinking on the pop and pour. Will probably liquid joy for decades to come.

Purchased on release from K&L. Light golden straw color. Lovely Riesling nose with a whiff of chalk. Youthful and fresh. Perfect balance and a zippy, well integrated acidity. A faint hint of apricot and wild honey on the finish. No sense of sweetness; just a zesty, sexy wine. Spatlese just doesn't get better than this.

AP 13 02. Light-medium orange color. Nose is sharp and sweet with honey, pear, persimmon or kumquat, ginger and horseradish. Apple skins. The palate is near perfect - it’s got the spice and piquant of the nose and the flavors but with a wondeful balancing sweetness - it’s clearly dried out some over the years but has more sweetness than the nose would suggest. It’s at that point now where it’s just spherical and almost creamy with perfect acid that drives it but is seamless. Wonderful nutty dry extract hints like you get more of in a mature Riesling that has dried out significantly. Peach, cinnamon, persimmon, honey, walnuts, spices, apples, horseradish. A nice deep honey register as well. Finish is long and spicy and deep. Fucking awesome. Nose: 5/6, Palate: 6/6, Finish: 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi: 2/2 = 18-18.5/20.

This was on point. Much better than an '01 Bernkasteler Badstube spät I tried recently. This has rested unmoved in my cellar since its purchase at release, but did show some signs of seepage from overfill. The cork was saturated but the color was a pretty golden hue and showed no signs of premox. Laser like precision here, with excellent balance of sweetness and acidity, rich lemon and peach notes, and a long finish. Great stuff and drinking perfectly now.

A Lost Weekend In NH; 6/16/2022-6/20/2022 (Lake Wentworth): Suffered a bit next to the Donnhoff. Dense color. Super citrus, wiry. Feels primary. Entering maturity, but still youthful energy here. Not as complete and balanced on the palate as the Donnhoff. More qiry. Graacher sometimes shows that citrus punch a bit more. A little petrol in the background after airing out.

I like this, but to be honest, given the exalted reviews of the 2001 vintage in Germany, I’m not loving it. Good as opposed to great, but I’m still enjoying it nonetheless.

Perfect cork, and perfect bottle. Right on the plateau of maturity, and no sign of decline coming for at least another 10 years, likely more. It started with a whiff of pineapple, and developed more Mosel-typical aromatics as it was open. It still stayed to the riper end of the spectrum, and eventually settled on ripe peach with a slight drizzle of honey. Still full sweet, but we’ll balanced by the acidity, we finished the bottle much too quickly. Should have bought magnums.

Wonderful in every way. Piercing Riesling fruit that's still vibrant. Opulent but bright. Spherical balance. Over time, I've come to love G-H every bit as much as W-S, and wines like this are a big reason why.

(Mostly) Spätlese dinner at Proxi (Chicago, IL): #13-02, 8% abv. For some reason the last few years, I've neglected this bottling of Prüm to focus almost singularly on Wehlener Sonnenuhr. It's pretty clear from this bottle today that I probably made a mistake performing that triage. This was fantastic -- so bright, fresh, and minerally, with a slightly greenish herbaceous streak running through it. This probably had the most prominent acidic backbone and the starkest mineral structure, and the relatively tart fruit really brought that to the forefront.

Brief note. Cork perfect. Color straw. Would not have guessed this to be 20 yrs old but then again it is prum. This was my #2 wine of the night and only slightly edged out by the 89 Grunhauser. Lengthy and perfectly balanced. This will age effortlessly for another 10-20 I think. Really superb. thanks Mike!

Gorgeous and not showing it's age at all. Just golden and still a little hint of green to its hue. Really hard to believe this is 20 years old. Sweet apple, citrus, peach, a little honey, flowers and spice. Long filigree finish, sweet and rich but so much cut and freshness, incredible length.

high-toned med. gold, w/still some glint of green highlights; evocative yellow stone fruit, poached quince & crushed nectarine, a little hit of kerosene; well-formed; nectarines razor-edged between optimal ripeness & clingy acids, wet slate, definitively juicy & lip-smacking, fine & long.
an enchanting bottle that was on the money w/supper
pork & kimchi stew w/tofu & spring onions

Medium yellow gold in color. Classic aromas of citrus oils, green herbs, yellow florals, orchard stone fruits, hint of petrol and slate. The invigorating palate shows perfect balance of sweetness & acidity, honeyed stone fruit marmalade, salty minerals and a long off-dry finish. 20 years later and this is still singing.

PNP. Translucent, rich yellow in color. Sweet peach and soft apple notes. Stone minerality and honey. Still youthful fruit, balanced with fresh acidity. Full mouthfeel without being cloying. Long finish. I would savor a glass, or pair with a spicy Asian dish.

Decanted for only 10 minutes, chilled, but continued to open and put on a bit of weight as we drank it. Definite floral nose, with a touch of orange and a touch of petrol. The medium to plus bodied palate yielded a nice dose of orange, some peach, pear, and citrus, along with a streak of minerality. Not overly sweet, but nicely off-dry. Good acidity to keep everything in balance. Last of a 4 bottle lot bought at auction. Did not quite show the same vibrancy as the previous bottles. May be best to begin to drink up.

Decanted this bottle for 20 minutes based on previous TNs which allowed the wine to open and put on a bit of weight. This was a very similar experience to both previous bottles with a floral and orange nose. The medium to plus bodied palate yielded a full dose of orange, some peach, pear, pineapple(?) and citrus, with a streak of minerality. Not overly sweet, but nicely off-dry. Good acidity to keep everything in balance, but with just a touch of bitterness on the medium to plus finish. Probably best to drink up in the next year or two.

Whiff of petrol after some wet rock but nose is reserved relative to the palate.
Palate has nice weight to it which diminishes as it melts into the tongue. Peach, tangerine. Into the finish the RS comes out more, with some nice honey. It's long. Very enjoyable, and all things considered, presents itself as quite youthful, given she is approaching 20 years.
Update: Really nice and more developed on night 3 - loads of petrol and kerosene. Palate becomes very pear-ike. (I vacuum sealed half a bottle on night 1 and stored it in the fridge until night 3).
Excellent.

Like all my Prum wines, this was purchased on release and not moved since. Another overfill victim, this has ulled about 1/2" but shows no signs of oxidation. Lovely deep golden color, big tropical/stone fruit and honeysuckle nose. At nearly 20 years of age, this is still incredibly fresh tasting, and none of the '01 Prums I've tasted recently have really even entered their secondary development (e.g., no petrol here). As with all the better '01s, this has bright acidity that cuts through the white peach and asian pear flavors. Hold.

Brilliant. Approaching a wonderful place right now - the fruit's still very fresh and youthful, but there's now quite a bit of savoury and creamy development. Beneath is a bed of chalky and slatey minerality, and the finish goes on a mile.

I have had this bottle since release it has not move until today from the rack in my cellar. Muted nose at first but opened up after about an hour revealing a floral nose. The palate also took some time to shed a dominate oily, viscous flavor then revealing peach, pear, apricot, balanced by firm acidity, petro and a good dose of Spatlese level RS. Overall I was expecting more from this wine, given the producer, the vintage and it's reputation, maybe an off bottle, 2 more left.

Nose of underripe nectarine with floral notes and a hint of petrol. Showing well out of the bottle with some crushed gravel and secondary earthy notes. Slightly past its prime I think as it started to fade around 90 minutes.

Deep lemon to light gold. Raspberry and chamomile on the nose, showing little age. Impeccable balance between acidity and sweetness, showing nothing but waves of pure, primary fruit (raspberry, asian pear, freshly sliced green apple). Fairly full-bodied, with stunning fruit intensity and very long length. Perhaps not quite as deep as the very best bottles of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, but still an utterly spectacular Riesling, with many, many more years to go.

Dinner at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): #13-02, 8% abv. Initially, this was more dumb and mute than I would have expected it to be, and after a slew of corked Prums, I was less than happy with it. At least it wasn't corked, I guess. Turns out that this bottle just wasn't particularly ready to go right away, and air gave this wine a lot more structure and density. This bottle is a slight touch more advanced than the one I tasted a month or two ago; the fruit and acids aren't as juicy and primary, and there are mild hints of secondary characteristics. There's a lovely, almost chewy minerality here, and the wine isn't too sweet -- just really nicely balanced. While I like where the 2001s are sitting these days, I ought to slow down opening them, because these will obviously be very long-lived wines.

Wine #9: This is one of those rieslings which has age but doesn't seem to be showing much of it. Young and fresh and vibrant and all white flowers and sweetness (like a hint of rock candy). Nice acid that pulls it together. Easy to drink. (8 pennies)

Q2 - 2019 Tasting - Alsatian White Varieties from around the World (New York, NY): 9/17 wines tasted double blind. The nose on this was a bit of white flowers. Purchased on release. AP 13. Had this for a family meal followed by a 1998 JJP Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese. Pale gold color and still fairly youthful in appearance. Short decant. This was just wonderful spåtlese with sweetness and acidity coming into nice balance. Ready to go but of course will last a long time when stored properly. One bottle left.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 4/12/2019-4/13/2019 (Chicago, IL): #13-02, 8% abv. Absolutely stunning -- primordially fresh with some of that old-school JJP stink on the nose. Beautiful slatey character, with lots of fresh elements. No immediately discernible secondary character, this is about as youthful as you could possibly imagine. Wonderful power, acidity, and concentration.

#13-02, 8% abv. Pretty consistent with the bottle I had a few weeks ago. Light on the palate, with a nice bit of secondary just starting to develop. There's a slight bit of reduction, and this is perhaps a little less precise and green-herb-inflected as it can be. The palate is supple, with plenty of acidity that never sticks out. Incredibly well-balanced and while this isn't a racy mineral beam anymore, it's still very focussed.

Vinetasters: 2001/2005 Joh. Jos. Prüm (Skokie, IL): #13-02, 8% abv. Light, green, herbal notes on the nose. Slightly minerally and slatey on the nose, a little bit of reduction, but not over the top. Quite lean on the palate, with just the right amount of sweetness to balance the acidity. It's nicely tart, but shows more of an intense minerality than fruit. (Unfortunately, this wasn't decanted, so it may have not shown as well as the others.)

4th time I have had this wine. The cork was slightly elevated on this bottle and came out in 2 pieces. I bought these on futures back in 2002 for $14 per bottle. This bottle has certainly progressed and morphed into a very deep and intricate wine. Golden yellow color. Sweet petrol aromas. Notes of ripe pears, starfruit and apricots. Full bodied with an unctuous finish. In a very nice spot now. 94 points.

AP 13 02. God damn this is a gorgeous wine! So fresh, vibrant, and perfectly mature. Some spectacularly integrated development is the only giveaway that this isn't just a couple years old. I can't imagine a Spatlese maturing more gracefully and I wish I had more bottles to enjoy in future years. The lesson learned is that I should be hoarding even more Spatlese down the road. Prum works miracles!

Well now, this is approaching early maturity. The rich peach and apple fruit is still right there, but it has also developed some honeyed, spicy elements. The acid balance is dead on perfect, providing ample structure and refreshment. This is a drink now to infinity wine, as proper storage will allow for further graceful development, and a long, long maturity to a slow decline. Masterful wine.

Noticed some mold under the wrap on the cork and was prepared to pick up bits and pieces. To my surprise it came out intact in one solid piece without crumbling. Yellow to light golden colour. A bit shy on the nose but after a while notes of petrol and white flowers appeared. Initial intense burst of sweet and honey which glides into sensations of grape juice, grapefruit and some hint of pear. The sweetness is easily carried by the acidity and it finishes off with a pleasant tart and mineral note. Everything is in proper place and nicely balanced. Very nice indeed.

Had to get the ah so for the cork, which still came out in mostly one piece. Filtered out the rest. Initially, the petrol nose is relatively strong but fades over a few hours. It took a while for aromas of tropical fruit to emerge past the petrol. The palate also softened after an hour or two to show tropical & citrus fruits. By the 4th hour this was singing. There's a hint of tanginess and a whiff of petrol on the medium+ length finish.

Light gold color still with a bit of gas. After a good shake, the nose opens with some petrol and yellow grapefruit peel shavings (again!) - also white flowers and a touch of honey. So different from the Sonnenuhr which is all ripe apple and pear. The lively palate has significant extract - ripe grape skin, nectarine and a lovely finishing acid bite. Serious wine that is still quite youthful. (92+)

Fabulous wine that really transformed over the course of the evening. It opened with pink grapefruit as the main feature on the nose. With air, this mellowed and was replaced with lush, tropical fruit notes. Interesting that the Prum apple/pear profile was not present here. Not to worry as the wine was complete and a real joy to drink. (93)

Something off here, perhaps corked, but certainly not correct. At first there's a lot of pretty mango and lychee fruit, but the palate never shows the sweetness I'd expect from an 01 prum spatlese. Then it gets all weird and sulfury. Then the sulfur fades and nose takes on an odd green tea aroma, while the palate becomes progressively (regressively?) bitter. After four hours the wine is undrinkably bitter and tart, tasting almost moldy. Massive disappointment.

Increadible gold color. Nose shows apples, peaches, petrol, and all the mineral white stone / slate notes. Sharp acidity gives great support to the well-integrated residual sugar. Kept getting better! Amazing finish. Just perfect combination of persistency and agility.

Still showing some sulfur, but fantastic to sit down with after a little air - waves of fresh apples, pears and citrus fruits, vivid slatey minerality and a bright floral topnote all conveyed with a sense of lightness and remarkable purity. There's fantastic acidity underneath keeping it incredibly fresh and precise, and a finish that just keeps going. Fantastic wine that has years ahead but is still pretty great right now.

pale gold. Nose had a whiff of that sulfer thing. But it did nothing to mute the wonderful mouthfeel and taste. Moderate sweetness, richness with mouthcoating smoothness with an acid lift. Floral and white fruits. It's just that nose. Some like it, but it prevented me from giving a higher score. They claim it is terroir and not added sulfer-whatever.

Tons of sulfur initially, but it clears with some time to reveal fresh white fruited and apple flavours accented with slate, flowers and the start of developing smoky notes. The mouthfeel here is incredible, very polished and silken-textured but so light it seems to almost float in the mouth with the '01 acidity giving it fantastic precision and length. Stunning wine.

Wowza, yowza, still a baby so pretty. Still a touch of young Mosel stink (sulfur) on the nose, but this blows off quickly in the glass. 3 top tastes at N. Myrtle Beach; 1/17/2010-1/19/2010: Bracing acidity on opening. First night some petrol. Lotsa honey and lemon of course. Cardamom. An initial burst of sulfur blew off with time, so open this bottle well in advance. Context is everything in wine; this bottle might have been a show-stopper if it hadn't been poured alongside an '01 Von Hovel that was considerably better. This one is crisp and vibrant. A touch of diesel joins the apple pie to add richness, and the long finish is dotted with Mosel minerality. Either open it and wait a few hours to drink, or wait a few years to drink and open it. I'd go with the latter.

Popped and poured for Traci's parents in from Austin, TX. Her dad proclaimed it the best Riesling he's ever had...
The wine initially showed a little sulfur on the nose but that quickly blew off to reveal some white fruit, a little spice and an impression of wet rocks. The palate initially was loaded with baked green apples, white peaches, slate and water falling over rocks...a waterfall if you will. I was initially surprised there wasn't more sweetness but that was a pleasant surprise since I mostly like Kabinett level Riesling and like them young. Eventually the palate really tightened up its focus to reveal more gun metal, minerals...it was really laser focused. Very, very enjoyable.

Had as part of a vertical tasting of too much stinking wine so not much in the way of notes. This was far too tight compared to the others. This is going to be great, but even with being open all day, it was tight showing little but petrol and minimal fruit flavors. Let em sleep. Score based largely on potential, which I'm sure will reach much higher than the score I gave.

This wine was in a dumb phase. It was still very enjoyable to drink; but, was not showing all it could be. Aromas of sulpher on the nose and spritzy when I first opened it. Pale straw color. The nose was dominated by a sulfurous well-water aroma. Delicious overripe peach flavors abound in the mouth. A gushing fruit cocktail that splashes over into the finish, where the acidity and structure are slightly overwhelmed at the moment. A precocious little filly that should balance out into something very classy over time.

Ripe fruit on nose - peaches, candied lemon, lemon zest. Palate more oriented towards ripe stone fruit with lots of energy and minerality. Slightly sweeter than I expected (or would prefer). The first time I tasted this wine (summer 2003) it show a bit of effervescence which has since gone away. Good length and finish shows big fruit and minerality. This will keep getting better for a decade, probably with the sweetness softening, then last for at least another decade.

Opened to have with spicy Indian food. Decanted for about an hour to blow off some sulphur and spritz. On the nose this gives off some elements of slate, honey and white peach. On the palate this is very thick, almost custardy. That said, right now the sugar is somewhat overwhelming, and while the acid is clearly present I find this to be a bit monolithic. The finish is very long and leaves you pondering the wine. Clearly this needs many more years under its belt. That said, I have another half bottle left from this one which I am eager to sample tomorrow. DAY 2: Lots more sulphur has come out along with intense minerality on the nose. On the palate this is a revelation, as the wine has come into much greater focus with the sugar settling into the background the acidity providing amazing focus. This has some more white peach and the incredibly exotic and elusive mangosteen (Queen's Fruit). Upgrading from 88 to 91. I still have 2+ glasses left and will keep tracking this over the next day or two.

Double decanted about an hour before dinner, the wine had a small amount of the typical Prum sulphur on the nose upon opening but this blew off by dinner time. Pears and minerals dominated the nose and palate at this point. Long, long finish with lots of acid evident but in nice balance with the other components. Really nice at this point but needed the decanting as the nose was very closed ( other than the sulphur ) when the bottle was first opened. Should be a great '01 given 5-10 years.

Not as complete and balanced on the palate as the Donnhoff. More qiry. Graacher sometimes shows that citrus punch a bit more. A little petrol in the background after airing out.

Good acidity to keep everything in balance, but with just a touch of bitterness on the medium to plus finish. Probably best to drink up in the next year or two.

Vibrant light gold.

Hold.

Lunch at Black Salt with 1999 Fourrier Griotte, 1999 Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes, NV Selosse Rose, 1999 Taittinger CdC Rose, 59 Calon Segur and more (Black Salt, Washington DC): The bottle was a leaker which is more common and less problematic in Riesling than other wines. The bad cork did have a slightly detrimental effect on the wine as the color was dark gold and the wine was slightly advanced. Still, the wine retained great freshness and acidity. The fruit reminds me of ripe apple but it's only faintly sweet. I suspect a perfect bottle would show more verve but this was still quite enjoyable.

Something off here, perhaps corked, but certainly not correct. At first there's a lot of pretty mango and lychee fruit, but the palate never shows the sweetness I'd expect from an 01 prum spatlese. A touch of diesel joins the apple pie to add richness, and the long finish is dotted with Mosel minerality. Either open it and wait a few hours to drink, or wait a few years to drink and open it.

Wineflock - German Rieslings (Ken's): Group #3, My #4 - Medium/pale yellow color. Medium nose of white fruit and mineral. White apple palate with plenty of CO2 spritz!

JJ Prum 83 - 2003 and More (Scott Worcester's in Southwest Harbor, ME): Showing a light golden yellow in the glass with scents of petrol, lemon, and minerals in a bold and vivid nose. In the mouth this light to medium bodied wine shows excellent acidity and mineral characteristics as flavors of citrus, lime, and chalk sail across the palate on a 45+ second finish.

Bit tight at first, some sulphur, opens to show great verve, mineral, bit one-dimensional on flavors

I took a bottle of this to Hawaii when my wife and I visited Haggis and his wife. WS gave this wine 95 points. What a gorgeous wine. A whiff of petrol on the nose. This had a slight spritz at first. The wine showed excellent purity and balance. Notes of wets stones, citrus and peaches. Fine finish. Just now starting to show the depth and complexity from an aged Prum. 94 points.

Slightly effervescent, with aromas of apple cider and grass on the nose. On the palate it dances with loads of ripe fruit - apples and pears mostly. A lingering finish that lasts 30 seconds. Will not open another one for at least 5 years - this will age beautifully.

Similar notes as before, but a little more chewy. A masculine spatlese. Would recommend holding another 2 years.

Pale gold with a few bubbles – intense apple/honey nose mixed with some yeastiness. Glorious, rich palate full of fruit and vibrancy. So balanced and so young, but oh so good. A wonderful drink today that should be true magic with another 3-5 years in the cellar. Superb! (18+)

This wine was in a dumb phase. It was still very enjoyable to drink; but, was not showing all it could be. Aromas of sulpher on the nose and spritzy when I first opened it. I then splash decanted it before I took it to the restaurant. Mineral and gravelly character. Tropical fruits with lemon notes on this moderately sweet wine. A thick finish with balanced acidity. 91-93+ points.
