Bob's cellar. Pnp - ruby red, evident bricking. Nose has a reductive funk, very distant red cherry, black pepper, twist of liquorice and menthol, a sharp red acidity edge. Muted on tasting, faded acidity, all very subdued. Hmm! Needs to evolve. A few hours later the nose has developed more dark fruit, black cherry, and the bright acidity is still very present. Taste has developed too, tannins are firm, bright redcurrant is sharply there, some cigar box and compost base layer, earthy and mushrooms. Mature and ok, not that exciting. Agree with others on this needs drinking up.

Past its peak. A rather fine nose of muted fruit and leather. Palate of faint fruit, leather and soil. Finish was 5 seconds, then gone without a whisper.
Glad to have had this experience. All the heart and toil people put into crafting this light held together with moisture shouldn’t be so negated by someone like me who is passing judgement while I have a day job clicking a mouse and a wondering which past fork in the road I choose unwisely. So, while no <pause> moment for me, I felt lucky and good to have a taste of this.
Also, the Total Eclipse was fucking awesome. The biblical awesome, not the present-day shadow of the word.
This moved with us multiple times cross-country and sadly had very little fruit evident. Both Bordeaux and burgundy sommelier stems showed more tannic depth than std cab stems, but neither could breathe more life into this tired lady. NR
Final bottle from a half case consumed over the past 10 years. Not decanted. Initial savory impression gave way to a clean, lean wine featuring notes of iron, blackberry, wild raspberry. Mature but not tertiary. I would guess that it doesn't improve from here.

This is finally getting to the right place. It is earthy and integrated. The fruit is soft but delicious. I would give this, at least a tour decant before drinking. It is refined and wonderful, but don’t pair with a large steak. Instead, a nice pork or chicken would be a much better pairing
Cork in great condition, sealing well with about 1/3 penetrated. Immediate wonderful cabernet aroma from the bottle. Double decanted revealing a small amount of very fine tannin solids. Rather shy at first with red fruits, pencil lead and some spice tones with excellent acidity. Presented blind 4 hours later. Wow, really came alive now. Dark dense maroon barely showing 10 years age. Brooding wonderful nose of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with some dusty cedar, lifted violet, coffee and all spice aspects. Wow, really intense cabernet palate having strong cassis drive, not a hint of over-ripeness in fact quite taut still. After an hour, really opening up showing some smooth fine tannin mouthfeel with such utterly correct cabernet flavours and great intensity and length. No hint of French rustic winemaking, this is a beautiful clean wine with plenty of time left for good bottles (I hope my last one is this good).
Probably just past peak. Came off as 'thinner' than other recent older Calons ('95 and '96). Decanted for 2 hours on day 1, definitely picked up a bit of weight, and was probably just a tad better on Day 2. Based on this experience/bottle, my recommendation would be to drink in the near term.

very good; PnP and enjoyed this with friends who came over last minute; i found the nose a bit muted but the mouthful and finish elegant, enjoyable and pretty

Aired for 2 hours. Prunes, cherry and saddle leather on the nose. The fruit is definitely muted though. Similar profile on the palette. Tannins are integrated and there is a good spine of acidity. Felt it a little light on the mid-palette, yet the finish lingered on. For the price this felt a little underwhelming.

Sadly this bottle seems to be over the hill. Both the fruit and tannins are gone. it is drinkable but I will not be serving my remaining bottle to guests.
What a delicious beast. Opened and poured a glass and decanted the remainder of the bottle. Initially very tight and closed off. Appearance was brick red with some subtle clearing at the edges. Nose had cherry, pomegranate, graphite, cinnamon, whiff of green bell pepper. Palate was high in acid with a delayed but strong grippy tannin finish. Long finish. Notes of cherry, black peoper, graphite, iron, cassis, raspberry, leather jacket, baking spices. Very complex and constantly changing over the 4 hours I drank it. For me, it seemed to really open up and peaked around 2 hours. At this point the tannins and acid seemed to integrate a bit more and the above flavors and scents became more pronounced. This wine was still so young and vibrant, there was some secondary and hunts of teriary flavors, but I think it might still evolve over the next ten years, and probably has at least 20 left in its drinkin window.
I have to say this wine is in a good place right now. I don’t know that I would hold it another decade. It peaked about 3 hours after opening. I did a tasting comparing 4 wines all Bordeaux in style and greater than a decade old. Two were old world and two were new. This wine finished first. Other wines were Gloria, mayacamas, and Dunn. This wine was the best, but it was also most expensive. Still a fun comparison.
This was similar to my last experience in Dec 2022. The Calon Segur at 23 provides an enjoyable, but not revelatory, experience. I don't believe more time will improve it.

Medium ruby and garnet color, slightly cloudy. Powdered sugar, sweet berry melange, and a touch of tobacco on the nose. Very pleasant raspberry and tobacco notes lead with a small hint of lemon juice. Texture is very light, approaching watery. Very refreshing and tasty.

The 2000 Château Calon-Ségur needed some time to get going, but when it did it was yet another good example of Saint-Estèphe wine. With a nose that was balanced between balsamic wood and blackcurrant, the palette was extremely similar, boasting more blackcurrant, cassis and cedar before that distinct note of licorice came in for a finish that also had a distinct note of anise as well. This was a good wine - we wouldn’t call it great considering the strength of the vintage, but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.

Decanted twice before drinking. Filtered to remove the plentiful solids. This was a delicious and pleasing wine. It impressed me with its progression from a cedar inspired woody wine to a fine mixture of wood and red fruit. Very classic Bordeaux red.

Friday Group Brown Bag Tasting (J&J's): Double blind. Cherry cordial, chocolate, plum and black fruit notes. Full-bodied and firm, with flavors of plum, coffee and boysenberry. Overall a bit firm and tight. IIRC most of us thought Napa cab sauv.
This had been decanted for two hours before being rebottled and poured at least an hour+ later. These higher level 2000 Bordeaux continue to age at a glacial pace, leaving some to wonder if they will ever come around. I will continue to be patient with our bottles. (R&D)

A really hard to understand wine for those who have not had a mind blowing claret weight wine in their lives. I would say that this is either a miss, or simply it is a long, long way away from home. With time, it throws warm barnyard notes and the smolder from the iron tinged soil of saint estephe starts to easily float off the top and into the senses. Now now...If you would have told me back in 03 that this was going to be a 30 year wait and see wine, I would have bought the Montrose. I dont have more of this, but it is a wine to watch. It is becoming clear that there are winners and fillers in every vintage, including the great ones. In general, I dont find 2000 to be a great QPR year in left bank Bordeaux....HOLD_
Before sharing my tasting notes...full disclosure...you absolutely must decant this wine 3+ hours if you expect to taste any fruit and secondary flavors. And after a proper decanting, this becomes a wonderful old world style Bordeaux with austere cherry fruit and notes of lavender, pencil shavings and hints of licorice. There is forest floor notes on the finish and at the same time silky smooth with extended decanting. This is a dramatically different wine from hour one to hour four.
Considerable sediment thrown, but tastes young and tannic. Bought upon release, and stored at 55 degrees F. A classic old school Bordeaux that needs more time. Still pleasant to drink. Well balanced wine. Addendum: better after a few hours.

Solid and mature Bordeaux but not enough there. It may have been the pairing. I would have this with grilled lamb or a tenderloin to bring the best of it forward.

Popped'n poured at home with burgers. Not up to the level of other classified 2000s, but also not bad. May be at a bit of a disjointed phase, but definitely had some nice elements.

Despite proper decanting this wine was ...nowhere. Almost a no show in the nose. Edgy on the palate, young, green, herbal, liquorice, pencil shave, bell pepper, drying out in the finish. A real disappointment. The only explanation would be a late reduction phase or simply a very late starter. I will put aside the rest of the lot and revisit in 3 years.

Decanted, filtered and let rest for about an hour. Then we drank it over the next four hours. I agree that this a tricky wine to evaluate. Initially the nose and taste were of cedar and a hint of fruit. Then it turned into something with more red fruit and no cedar before going somewhat tasteless and bland. A late sip revealed more red fruit but little complexity.
This Calon Segur is hard to decipher right now. The bouquet is a little subdued right now, with some cassis but mainly secondary notes with herbs and some cedar. The palate is quite focused with a tight grip. Contrary to some notes I believe that this wine needs some additional time to come around. I will revisit in 5 years.

This bottle was past it's peak. It was missing the "secondary flavors". I think this bottle was past its prime and should have been consumed 2-3 years ago.
We had hoped for better than recent reviews, but our experience was similar. A very good nose was let down by a relatively thin and fruitless wine on first taste after a two-hour slow ox and then decant. It opened nicely after an hour post-decant, which obviously didn't produce new fruit, but it did result in the blossoming of the mature secondary flavors. An enjoyable, but not great, final drink emerged. This well-stored bottle peaked some years ago and wouldn't have improved. I plan to drink my final two bottles sooner rather than later.

Initially, delightful notes of deep sweet cherry in the nose. Light-bodied and delicate on the palate. Over the next two hours, the wine developed. Powerful and fresh notes of deep red fruit, more subtle notes of tar and toastiness in the nose. Delicious cherry flavors on the palate. As Classified Bordeaux goes, more like chamber music as opposed to a symphony.
Based on another cellar tracker comment, I pulled this from my cellar. We had it with a marinated pork tenderloinin in a Japanese style. This was not a match made in heaven, but it was a good excuse to open this wine. My wine is stored at 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and I feel this wine has many years left if well stored. Moderate sediment thrown, and well balanced. Good fruit. Very good for current drinking, but will last if your storage is good.

Splash decanted. Quite nice showing a plushness and fullness to the fruit in early maturity. Still quite vibrant crimson in the glass. Shows a lot of red currants with a “sweetness” to the fruit that makes it quite inviting and delicious on the palate. Some flint and hints of smoke on the nose. More elegant and less powerful than expected, but this is quite enjoyable in early maturity. Tannins quite fine and almost subtle.

This was a big, two-peat let down. Both bottles way past their drinking window contrary to published windows of 2025 - 2065. I wish.
Brown, raisiny, prune juice not even suitable for cooking. Down the drain. Both bottles have been properly stored. This hasn't happened in quite a long time. Oh well...
Decanted 6 hours but wasn’t really enough. Would have needed more like 10. Classic St Estèphe with a fabulous finish but this vintage needs another 5-10 more years to truly open up.

Drank over the course of 5 hours with no decant. Initially, the nose was very heavy on the tobacco/cigar box, but after some time it settle in. Cherry, spice, tobacco and earthy. Tannins have soften considerably and wine is easy to drink. Don't know that time is needed to help soften this wine, but maybe add just the slightest bit more of complexity.

Firm. bright, crisp, and a bit tart offering an earthy, red currant, cranberry, strawberry with plenty of tobacco, cedar, peppery herbs and spice. Years of cellaring has added a lot to this wine, but it is on the stern, old-school, crunchy, classic side of the style range, which some will love, and others will not. Another 5 years of age could help soften the wine.

Light auburn color. Cherry, earth and wet tar mixed with a banquet of red fruits. Bright flavors on the palate complimenting a silky mouthfeel. There’s likely some evolution to go on this wine, but it’s really lovely and easy drinking now.
p.s. grilled chicken and green beans

Only decanting was to filter out sediment. This bottle was about as good as it’s going to get. Not a lot of tannins left, but still identifiable blackberry and cherry on the palate. Some tobacco on the nose. I will drink my last bottle within the next 2 years.

from magnum pristinely stored, decanted 7 hours before serving. Lots of tobacco, cigar box, cedar and red currants on the nose. Very medium-bodied with a firm backbone and lots of black fruits. Fairly rich but very dry finish with some degree of herbal notes (think this had a big percent of Cab Franc). This is not a big, showy wine a la other 2000 BDX. Instead it comes across as very old school and elegant. Still not sure if it needs another 5-10 years as I don't know that the fruit will outlast the tannins... 91++??

still a way to go before reaching the maturity of this 2000 wine. Fruits start to aappear after a long decanting but the obviously patience remains the best choice for this wine which is and remains a promissing one.

90 mins decant. Light ruby appearance; nose still seems restrained with earth, crushed stone and distant mushroom. Obviously Old World and would have called this BDX if blind.
Dry across the palate, the fruit is still tight but is increasingly present as the evening (and wine) unfolds.
I’d give our remaining bottle 3+ hrs air if drinking in the next few years.

Lovely translucent garnet in color Very masculine and St. Estephe in profile, a bit haughty and still a touch of austere bite to the structure. But it's definitely starting to come out of its shell. Cassis, graphite and earth on the nose. The palate hits with wizened black plums, petrichor and a bit of scorched earth. Ferrous mineral and a pleasing swipe of tomacco leaf pyrazines give this depth, and along with some slightly coarse tannins, an old-school character. Undertones of chocolate covered cherry, not in your face, but just enough to remind one of the substantial Merlot in the wine. Probably another 5 years before it hits its peak, but quite nice now with a short decant. 93+

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc
Bright garnet hue, semi opaque core, compact rim. Little sign of age.
On the nose, it is quite fresh and fruity still. Lots of bright red berry fruits, oak spice, leather, mushroom, sous bois.
Palate is still angular. Tannic and dense. Medium to med plus body. Dry. Good fruit profile. Cassis, red cherry, blackberry, Cabernet leaves, gravelly soil tone, graphite, minerality. Finish has a decent length on the oak/vanilla undertone.
I am not really a big fan of Bordeaux vintage 2000. Either it is not ready or it never will be. This wine is in that camp. I don't think it's ready yet as all the components have still not come together. May be in 5 years time? 91+?

deepish red color with some bricking at the rim, very tight on the nose with polish and spice, cloves, on the palate quite closed down but showing some polish notes and a slightly raw vegetal streak, light meat notes, I have little experience with Calon Segur but still either this bottle was slightly off or we caught it at a difficult moment of its hibernation.
I would say the wine has definitely evolved since I last tried it 8 years ago! Decanted and aerated for 90 minutes and drank over another 90 minutes. Dark ruby red color, some translucency on the rim. On the nose lots of cassis, dark red berries, leather, earth, pencil lead. Very precise on the palate, tactile entry, very good acidity and structure mid palate, tannins in full balance and a decently long masculine finish for this medium to full bodied wine. Not the most complex but still very gratifying, and not there yet in terms of maturity but pretty close.

Dark ruby in color. Gorgeous aromas of cassis, plums, dark florals, cedar and hint of cigar-box on the nose. A silky palate shows good balance to the sweet and dense dark fruits, hint of earth, good acidity, melting tannins and a long ripe tobacco and cedar filled finish. This has come together extremely well.

This has entered its drinking window, but with a few years of development ahead of it. However, that said, it is surprisingly approachable with a few hours of aeration. It has a very attractive nose packed with red and black berry fruits and thanks to a fellow reviewer I picked up the eucalyptus notes. The palate is a little more unforgiving at this stage but has great depth with leather and earth prominent. Similarly the finish is on the leaner side but with excellent balance and decent length. I would hope and expect another 2 or 3 years will elevate the wine.

Bordeaux 2000 - 20 Years On - 48 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) It´s a good vintage but not on par with more recent great vintages like 09/10/15/16. Why? A smaller group of top wines reaching lower highs and in general a tad less depth, purity and finesse. 2) Right bank is ready, the left bank still needs time to integrate and open up. 3) Not much tertiary aromas yet - peak drinking window at least 10 years away for most wines. 4) 2000 is a bit a cooler vintage which is great for the right bank (not too much ripeness). 5) Winners? Pomerol with the highest ratings. Le Pin (97+ pts) leading the pack for me (narrowly beating the consensus winner Pavie (97 pts).
More information, top and worst 10 lists, appellation rankings, out- and underperformer from five participants in the story link. As always, in such tastings (lots of wines, not a lot of time per wine, not decanted) the ranking of wines/appellations might be more informative than the scores.
TN: Like many left banks rather muted but harmonious on the nose. Some unintegrated oak is still there. Medium expressive on the palate dark fruits, earth and herbal aromas along some more oak notes on the palate. What is missing here is a bit more depth but especially more precision as well as a touch fruit sweetness. It’s round and harmonious but I guess this will open up a bit more and get more complex with a few more years of cellaring. Medium+ length with a rather earth-driven finish. A tad below the Montrose (rated 93pts).
Decanting: I guess this could use at least two hours.
Group average: 91.25 pts Group rank: 40th out of 48

Deep garnet color turning tawny brick orange at the rim with a transparent edge, indicating considerable age. The bouquet is attractively perfumed with baked orange peel, potpourri on the red and black fruits ending with hints of leather and eucalyptus. The palate is medium bodied with mellowed acidity (due to its age) that elegantly balances the black currants, baked raspberry fruits with secondary flavors of sweet vanilla on toasted oak, all the way to the long, silky finish with hints of dried herbs. This is a classic Saint-Estèphe. Great structure; solid mid palate; purity in fruit; exquisite balance of power and elegance. Drink now until 2030. 95+

Grand Bordeaux 2000 horizontal tasting; 6/20/2021-6/21/2021: Grand Bordeaux 2000 tasting with ~60 wines from the vintage hosted by a private collector. All wines were poured directly from the bottle with no decant and served in flights of 4. As general observations I would highlight: 1/ Today the 2000 is, without a doubt, a right bank vintage with Pomerol the star, 2/ the vast majority of wines are still going strong with hardly any past their peak 3/ On the left bank, St Estèphe was most ready to drink with a lot of wines in a closed stage right now, 4/ On the left bank, 2nd to 4th growths were generally more open for business than the 1st growths which almost all closed, only hinting at their full potential. 5/ If you must open a left bank bottle, Margaux is the safest place to look. Complete scoring overview and additional commentary included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: Fine tobacco, leather, dark cherry fruit core, green minty notes as a herbal side and just a whiff of perfume. Fresh, more red berry type of palate. Good balance even if tannin still have quite some grip. This felt rather early in the drinking window. A solid Calon Segur, but more recent vintages are no doubt punching in a different weight class (2010, 2016, 2018).
No introduction needed here, even if this château has been a relative underperformer. Colour: v deep red, v thin rim, brick tinge. Nose: full, v ripe, verging on mature but still vibrantly fresh, cassis after a good couple of hours, still hints of Bovril when first opened, earthy notes, q classic St Estèphe in spite of the high Merlot content. Taste: med body, somewhat sharp, ok fruit, definite acidity, v cassis, long finish but hot (13% ABV only!), astringent as in other notes about this wine. Overall, typical of the property for the time: classic St Estèphe but without the refinement of its peers. Still a treat, sentimentally, to taste.
Split. Chalky tannins and still fairly astringent. Flavor profile was the usual cassis, leather, vanilla. Short finish, but overall well-balanced. Split probably had another 5 years on it easily, so the tasting window on CT is probably still accurate for the full bottles.
Need to decant off sediment. Last glass was a big chewy.

Nose of dried red currant, tobacco leaf, and dried oregano. Palate shows red currant, dried cherries, rose water and wet gravel. Long caressing tannins on the finish with red plum, leather, stones, and tobacco notes on a long finish that puckers the tongue at the end. This wine is fully mature now though I'm sure it can hold.
My final bottle of this vintage and it was again special for me. I love this particular chateau and the wine here hasn't disappointed yet. Bittersweet cocoa and milk chocolate aromas stood out along with forest floor notes, a touch of spice/black pepper. Very smooth, silky tannins. Just a delicious experience that enhanced some very nice bistro steaks.

Decanted and let rest for a brief period. Reticent nose that eventually came around with a nice perfumed red fruit scented essence. Tasted just fine with typical Bordeaux restraint. Very delicious with excellent mouthfeel and complexity of flavors. We had left over wine the first day so we pumped it down for a second. It didn't make it. The second day portion had turned.

Pro and CT reviews on this cover a broad range: 88-94. RP called it a 94 in 2016. This is my second bottle of this in last 6 months; well stored since release, decanted an hour, drunk over two. No good blind taster would guess this nose to be anything but Bordeaux: too much tobacco, black granite, licorice, earthy black fruit stemminess to be anything else. Some nice milk chocolate and black olive also; a 93 point nose! Fine tight tannins , blackberries, and black stone fruit pits in a clean, medium weight body. Finish is short and dry. The real problem is that the fruit seems slightly underripe, particularly the 35% merlot, and from mid palate to finish there’s a disappointing sense of dilution, as if a great wine had been served with a couple of melted ice cubes. There is some elegance, breeding, and typicity, but the QPR on this makes it a loser, especially in a terrific vintage. I think RP got carried away with his “vintage of the century” hyperbole. Should drink well for 40+ years, a good, solid, undistinguished St. Estephe
First whiffs: graphite, rock dust, thyme, pepper, leather, burnt meat. Upon warming up: some chocolate and licorice, hints of vegetables. Taste after a 2.5h decant is a disappointment, closed and unresolved. no off-aromas & fine nicely drying off tannins, but total lack of sparkle / intriguing contrasts. In its current state poor value for money.

Subdued nose with dark red fruit, mint, floral tones and a hint of tobacco and wood. Palate is more revealing with airy but attractive structure with fine acidity and tannin. Finish is light but lengthy.
Neither tasted too young or too old but more just generally muted; not unattractive or unwieldy which makes me think it could reveal something elegant and quite attractive in next 5-10 years.
Tacked this onto a 67PM 2000 Bordeaux horizontal and this was by far the least forthcoming of all the wines and least interesting of the 6 wines.
Better the second day, but even then it was drunk next to the remains of a bottle of Esprit de Pavie '09 and didn't come out as the preferred bottle...

Nose was fairly shut down most of the evening, with a little coaxing some of that mature Bordeaux character came out after a while. Palate was much more on point for me. Resolving tannin but still good presence, dark fruit, good acid, paired nicely with steak. 91-92

Garnet color and more pale toward edge of glass. Strong red berries and some oak and dusty taste. Bold tannins with plenty of acidity left. The body is medium/full with a pleasant and polished texture, however, there is plenty of acidity for further cellaring. I would guess another five years would not hurt this wine at all.

This is a highly potential wine. From the first nose it already showed an interesting character; concentrated tea leaves mingling with big fruits. The wine does not overpower on the palette, a very balanced wine. It does not shout, nor is the wine shy, it slowly reveals itself. The fruits are very subdued, it’ll take another 2 decades for this wine to mature, as the searing tannins are everywhere within the wine. I’d award it 5 stars down the road without a doubt as right now it’s not ready to drink.”

Bright red currant and cherry fruit, moderate cedar and spice notes underneath. Fruity, with well integrated tannin. Is it possible this still isn’t ready? There is not a lot of breadth and depth not secondary development. I decanted 1 hr and it did not improve much during 2 hr dinner. Was my only bottle but if I had more I would hold or decant 4 hours.

When this was priced at retail to clear the restaurants cellar to make way for a new wine menu, you take all the bottles you can. OMG! Perfectly soft tannins, cigar box and licorice with dark dried fruit. It took 30mins in the glass to open up. This is classic aged left bank. Couldn't believe our luck at £100 a bottle we took all 4 remaining bottles

I've been waiting to pop this one open but I've admittedly been very skeptical about the timing after reading all these reviews. I drank this tonight with some Green Egg grilled ribeyes and it was great. But. It's not ready and I'm not sure how much better it will get. I get the sense this wine has a short drink window for optimal show.
C: Ruby with slight tawny hues. The color alone tells you it's still got some time.
N: Underripe red and black fruit, pencil shavings, sweet tobacco and leather
P: Still has some fruity tones but it seems like underripened black fruit, graphite, sweet tobacco; medium plus acidity, medium alcohol.
F: Medium long finish of acidic black fruit and tobacco
I'm just a bit confused by this wine. It's either past its prime or it needs another 5 years or more. Something just seems out of balance and while it was enjoyable and paired well with the steaks, something was just.....off. It's like it's trying desperately to come together but just can't quite get there.
Great experience but won't seek out another bottle considering the gamble with the cost that this could still get better.
Mature dusty brown rim. Ruby red fruit in the nose. After two hour decant, soft mature tannins, flat middle palate, sweet finish. Enjoyable, although I wanted more from the wine.

A bit disappointed considering the pedigree and year. Nice fruit, mid-palate intact but the finish was relatively short. Enjoyed it but would not seek out another bottle.
Opened this for dinner and finished off at a party later on. I continue to enjoy this chateau as much and maybe more than any of the others I have had. The earthiness along with some leather and even some floral tones in the aroma and then the fullness of the palette, with cherries, currants and leather and wood are just so good. The tannins and lingering finish are maybe my favorite part of this wine. I enjoy this every time I open one.

Tasted blind - Young juicy/ bloody red plums and rustic soil, which instantly reminds me of Chateau Montrose. Good freshness combined with soft tannins, lovely merlot fruits with good Cabernet Sauvignon backbone. Hints of gravely pencil lead. Lovely spices, and structure. St Estephe/ Pauillac, 2001? This was once again deep in the upper eschelons of the St. Estephe hierarchy, still below Cos and Montrose, but always so well made and terroir perfect. I would hold these for two more years, as the fine stiff backbone yielded still a bit more tannic acid and less warmth than I usually encounter with these wonderful Calon wines. Deep dark smoke forest and cherry, forest floor with plenty of moist earth, and a hint of mint,

Pepper initially, then some berry halfway through. After a 1 hr decant, this had a horrible imbalance of acid, and the tannins were imperceptible. After 2 hrs it slightly improved, but I was about to write it off. After 3 hrs, it finally opened up and came together somewhat. I plan to hold my remaining bottles another couple years.

Praelum - Les Alcooliques (Praelum Wine Bistro): A very strong peppery hit up front, and reveals a concentrated mid-palate of blackberry, fern, and cassis. Would call this a pretty good and classic St Estephe, but not more than that. Apparently, that wine label makes it a firm hit with the hopelessly romantic

Second Sunday Group: Geja's Cafe format (Marty's): Courtesy of R&D. Popped and poured a short time later. This is still just a tight, primary beast of a wine. The 2000s continue to evolve at a glacial pace. Maybe some chocolate, dark fruit and cherry, but it's just T-I-G-H-T, tight. Hold.
Double decanted by my friend before we met, and then decanted for another 15 min. Big nose of red fruit, full body, good balance and keeps evolving in the glass. This is a very good 2000, that will keep improving but at last is within its drinking window. Best 2022-2030.

Still quite primary but very approachable some four years after my last encounter. Deep and dark in the glass, with an inviting nose of grilled herbs and cedar. Some well integrated oak on the palate, with restrained dark fruit, smoke and menthol. Heading to a really good place, albeit slowly.

I am confused....I purchased two lots of 6 bottles within one year from the same retailer. This last bottle is where I expected this wine to be....tannic, fruit restrained and a long life ahead of it. My comment 3 months ago was the exact opposite (wine fading, drink now). I am not sure if this is bottle variation or 6 improperly stored bottles, prior to reaching my cellar, but there is a massive difference here. Judging by some prior comments, I am led to believe that 6 of my bottles were not shipped/stored well....
Still very dark red/black in colour. Very closed on day 1 but opened up beautifully on day 2 when it was absolutely delicious. Probably a bit too early to drink, so will keep my remaining five bottles for quite a while yet.

91-93, but this wine is decade(s) young so I hold off on a score. Double decant with extended slow o. Wine offered nothing. Nose so closed, a little balsamic reduction is all I get after some aggressive swirling. A wall on the palate. Aggressive swirling required to unlock a little fruit to taste, on the darker spectrum with still heavy tannin that needs a decade more to unfurl. I get the sense this is a well made wine, with balanced dense fruit (leaning slightly sweet/baked fruit) and freshness. But this wine was a wall, and all I can do is speculate. Someone on the table suggested 15+ years needed...

Loads of sweet Tobacco, leather and dark fruits. Power and elegans in great combination. On the palate full bodied, firm tannin that will last a long time, dark fruits, Clean fruit, nice cassis-feeling, also very elegant, Lovely!

Drank again from the same restaurant and as others have pointed out, wasn't great at first, but after a few hours it started to come alive and was very nice again. NEEDS A DECANT!

This sucked on day1. Bright red. All wood and tannin on day 1 with 5hr decant. On day 2 much more balance with some lead pencil and dark fruit. Not sure if it will ever be great, but open it way ahead of time if you plan to drink now

I’m hooing this is just going through a dead period, but this had no taste. Totally closed down. Let it breathe for 3 hours. Nothing. Tried it the next day. Still nothing. Real bummer because the 95 we just drank was quite nice.

Color slightly fading.....a few toes in the grave here, but not the whole foot. Sorry Brits! This worries me. Tannins are mostly gone (integrated ?). Fruit is in decline.....While all of this should scare me, the wine is very tasty, but ready for retirement. I would finish this off in the next year or so.

30+ minutes open in the bottle, but could probably use more. Cork showed very minor signs of staining. Black cherry color. Cherry, caramel, cough medicine, and cedar on the nose. Black cherry on the palate with more tartness that I would expect. Shortish finish. This wine starts out awesome on the nose and then proceeds to deteriorate from there. Disappointing as either my expectations were wrong or mismanaged by the staff at Berry Bros. Very little power or tannins in this guy.

A vivid reminder of why we always went home to Bordeaux. Not to suggest a preference over Burgundy, but rather a welcoming, perfectly ready and integrated bottle of finely made wine. Lots of smoke infused dark cherry, graphite, forest floor, plum, horse scents, and a hint of cassis. Very St Estephe without reaching the complexity a Cos or the deeper body of a Montrose. Needed under 30 minutes in the decanter and never really delivered a distinctive nose. Wonderful with food.

I think that this wine has improved dramatically since I last tasted - it has opened up into a very solid, enjoyable wine with a lot of red fruit, good acidity and backbone, and a medium-long finish.

Eighteen years and getting better! Go 2000 vintage, one of the best in this lifetime. The aromatics are vivacious as they explode with joy upon opening- sweet currant, blackberry and cigar. Structured beautifully, with balanced acidity and nigh perfect minerality; this is a luscious wine.

This classic St Estephe has a persistent deep crimson colour and an initially reticent nose that opened with an hour in the decanter and continued to improve through the evening. It showed classic blackcurrant, liquorice, charcoal with touches of dark chocolate, raspberry and walnut. The palate was initially quite tough but again opened to reveal a lovely line of rich fruit balanced by a firm spine of fine, ripe tannin that lingered for several minutes. If the cork is good and the cellar cool this should continue to reward over the 20 years or so.

Purple color with a slight brown tinge. No real bouquet or flavor, just acidity and tannins. Clearly not a bottle that aged well. Another and last bottle of this vintage in my cellar, tasted the following day was similar. Possibly affected by being a Hurricane Katrina wine. No rating.

Blackberry, mocha, blackcurrant, oak, and a hint of flora (irises and violets). Medium+ acidity, medium+ body, medium+ smooth tannins, medium/medium+ finish. Very pretty on the front end, but this could have done with a bit more intensity and length towards the back palate.
Purple color with little discernable bouquet or flavor, just hints of cassis and bell pepper. For a wine that is usually very big, this was a wimp with not much body, no depth, and no finish. Very similar to the first bottle, but possibly degraded, as it went through Hurricane Katrina. I have left it unrated.
Decanted for more than an hour. Strong though very elegant, on the nose black currant and leather, on the palate fresh, dense and long, less expressive than a year ago, but this could change again with further maturity, there is enough structure for a great second life, 94+.

Bordeaux night at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): What happened here? Shut down in every way possible. Black, dense, and simple. Seems like there might be some good material here (there is, because I tasted this a few years ago and found it open and enjoyable), but today, there's just absolutely nothing. Intimidating. I much, much preferred the brilliant 2003 next to this today.
Nose: Cherry, black raspberry, spice, graphite and some bell pepper notes. Palate: Quite ripe blue/red fruit, graphite and some leather notes. Showing young with ripe and fine tannin, but few secondary notes on palate today. Finish: Some mature detail starting to show up in pepper, earth and spice.
Consumed over Easter weekend, decanted for 3 hours from 1.5L. Based on tasting other 2000's recently I expected this to be more ready to go. Not primary, but secondaries are not showing up like 00 Lynch right now.

clear, deep ruby, clean, excellent profound dark fruits & spicy-earthy aromas, leather, dark ripe fruits - a quality Bordeaux nose dry, high acidity, high tannins, full body, very good structure & complexity, rustic Bordeaux style; long quality finish & aftertaste. required more than 5 hours to open.

Am I really losing my love for Bordeaux? Did I pop this too soon? This bottle under-delivered for both for the vintage and for the pedigree. I expect more from a 2000 Troisieme Cru. It did develop over the course of the evening but it was very simple, too simple for an 18 year old bottle. The tertiaries were mellow and although the palate was smooth with a little grip on the finish, that is just the minimum I expect from quality wine. There still is some fruit but not abundant. I am hesitant to say this will develop further, maybe slightly more but not like an '82. Too bad.
Started strong but mellowed down quite a bit after about 45min decant. Medium body at best. Pepper, green bell pepper, dark fruit. Enjoyable now and for years to go

Deep purple color with little discernable bouquet or flavor, possibly hints of cassis and bell pepper. Tannins not overly aggressive. Since Calon Segur is usually a big wine, it is possible that this bottle was in a dumb phase, but this was clearly not a Wow wine from the comments of other tasters. I have more bottles so time will tell. This wine went through Hurricane Katrina and may have been degraded so I have left it unrated.

Dark ruby core plus brick edge. The palate has fragrant perfume p, quite floral even and then blackcurrant, oak and cedar aromas which is still primary. The palate has grip, blackcurrant and berry fruit, spice, lead pencil and cedar. Nose and flavours ares till primary, excellent but this has much more to give.

2000 Ch. Calon Segur. Dyp rød. Ungdommelig farge. Litt vanskelig ved åpning. Sure kirsebær, tobakk, kaffe, blyantspiss og tobakk. Mye grønn pepper og paprika. Ganske bra balanse, flyelsmyke tanniner. 91 ambivalente poeng.

Took a long time to open up and even then felt thin and begrudging. Not much fruit and bone, bone dry. One could sense the potential, and to be fair it was a little more approachable on day two, but overall still a rather severe wine. My first time with this chateau, which was rectified with a 1995 a few days later - more warmer, fuller, if not exactly overflowing with complexity. Maybe my 2000 was mis-stored over the years.

Tasted blind. Deep cassis, cedar, and melted licorice. Round and smooth. Good balance between bitter, tannic austerity and sweet fleshiness. Plummy, bright fruit on the palate. Drink now. Rating: 90
Guess the wine. Cabernet dominant. Left-Bank Bordeaux. 15+ years old.
Non-blind p.s.: This is a high-quality Bordeaux, to be sure. I am slowly watching my tastes evolve toward riper, New World wines.

Decanted an hour or so, and surprisingly accessible. Not as tannic as I'd expect from a young Calon. It's not especially developed in terms of tertiary flavour, but it's a lovely drink now with lots of bright, fresh dark berried fruit tinged with cedar and earth, and it's just starting to show the beginning of some development.

Can't believe it's been four years since my last bottle. Somewhat less expressive now but more developed and streamlined. Same lead pencil scents as always - very classic Northern Medoc aromatics. The tannic structure seems close to resolved, making the wine uncharacteristically slender and silky for the ordinarily muscular Calon. The fruit still has a piercing berry intensity and hasn't started to mature yet but with the booster rockets of the tannin kicked off it seems likely to coast through a stage of more advanced development soon enough.

From magnum - quite developed, a definite tawny hue to the rim; this seems more developed than the Beychevelle 2000 served alongside from bottle. Lovely flavours but quite advanced for the age and bottle size.

Was superb two years ago, is superb now and will be superb during the next twelve years or more. On the nose concentrated, dense but still very harmonious with plum and tertiary notes, similar on the palate, smooth and mouth filling with long finish. Acidity, tannin and extract are in a perfect equilibrium. Great wine from an excellent vintage.

Brought the bottle up from out of the cellar and pulled the cork about an hour before the first pour. Bin-stained label. Cork was in perfect condition. After pouring the first glass, it was clear that we were in for a treat as we could smell the bouquet from across the table, drawing me in closer. Notes of cassis, dried apricots(?!), tobacco, damp forest floor, well-oiled ball glove, fresh asphalt and a touch of green bell pepper. So many wonderful layers! The color was deep garnet and hardly showing any signs of age. Some fine sediment was present. On the palate it was cassis, tobacco and a touch of cocoa. Finish lasts for 20-30 seconds. Beautiful body. Tannin is still a factor though it's not a chore to get past. Considering the adequate acid, considerable structure, and the fact that this tasted nowhere near 17 years old, I would have to say that the 2000 vintage will last for decades to come. This was an outstanding bottle. Drink now or Hold.

Significant improvement from 2008. Not decanted. Poured straight from the bottle, but starting to show some form after a couple of hours.
The wine looks crimson coloured. The legs are medium. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like red currant, cherry, violet, light toast and marzipan. The body is medium. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

Medium garnet. Nose of earth, dark fruit. Quite lean on the palate, not rustic but not generous either. Very classic Medoc aroma. Feels like a cooler vintage wine. Should have more stuffing for a 2000. Decent but not a great Millenium wine.

From 375, so perhaps this well stored bottle was further along the maturity curve than other tasters here. My experience was above the average described here. Really classic left bank nose of leathery red fruit and cedar that follows into the mouth. Tannins are mostly resolved, and it's got about as plush a texture as you'll see in Saint-Estephe. Served with a Rabbit Ballotine with spring onion, white asparagus and porcini puree at Bibou in Philadelphia. Superb value (at time of purchase).

Calon Segur 2000 ex chateau -barely legal & Still dark ruby with a slight tinge of pink at the edge to tell you it is approachable ( pun not intended!)
A nose that is complex and intriguing and at the same time beguiling - it would have you believe it is much softer than it is - the first nose makes you think it is a Margaux not a rustic St. estephe, it is that floral ! As you swirl it you think maybe not , maybe it's too spicy - maybe it's a mature Emillion but as you taste it the punch hits you full and square and takes your breath away- Wow at sixteen years it is still a bucking bronco , quite rustic still ! I did feel it was lower on fruitiness and juice than I expect - though granted the tannins have aged and starting to integrate and its softer than before but it still retains more than enough to balance the fruitiness. The finish is medium with a dry leathery mouth feel typical of the region. Another small shortcoming I saw was that the nose really did not open up or evolve ( and I did Decant for an hour plus) - so in short the classic balanced Estephe but needs maybe another 2 years of patience. If you want something punchy though drink up ! You will be knocked out ! For the price a good bargain indeed given the towering vintage. Just shows that the powerful 2000s maybe need a few more years - hit them when they are of legal age ( 18 !!)

Deep garnet with some clouding. Needs 90+ minutes to show up but eventually gives a classic St. Estephe bouquet of mature and drying currant, leathers, cured meats, and rustic underbrush and dry soil. Characteristic of the 2000 Medoc vintage on the palate: massive fruit power but not overwhelming and somehow warm and soft. Tannins provide structure and are inoffensive. In many ways a shame to consume right now as it clearly has a long future ahead, but makes for very pleasurable drinking. Two solid bottles tonight.

Deep garnet color and still inky too, clear and opaque. Aromatics burst through as soon as cork pulled. Smells are barnyard, blackberry, currant, and raw meat. Tastes are dry leaves, unripe blackberry, hoisin, earth, spice, cedar, and smoky tatstes. Tannins are dusty and satin like and the finish is long and a bit like unripened fruit. Complex.

A big nose filled with fruit, perfume, cedar tree, cigar box and tar. The taste is still tight with lots of nice tannin and good acidity, but with the body to carry it. Notes of dark red berries and homemade caramel. The wine continued to open up and evolve over the next 3-4 hours (even though it was pre-decanted). Amazing wine today and will probably improve in terms of balance.

Nose is elegant and integrated, graphite and sandalwood with hidden blackberry fruit underneath. Palate was medium bodied, and what it lacked in power, it made up for inelegance. At 6 hours open it seemed to put on quite a bit of weight while maintaining elegance. Very nice.

This was the 3rd bottle of a case purchased in November 2011. Splash decanted 2 hours before. This wine is moving into its middle age. Plenty of sediment but clear and starting to tend towards a brick color. Plenty of leather and eucalyptus on the nose. Tannins receding. A little lacking in generosity on the palate, but immensely satisfying with red meat. Spicy, earthy & vegetal a Classic St. Estephe. "My heart belongs to Calon".

Tasted alongside 2001 Ch. Latour and not at all outclassed. Starting to loosen up but still firm. Tannins are well matched to the fruit. Oak is not overdone. Lacks the opulence of 2003. I think it needs another 5 years.

Very enjoyable wine. Complex floral/graphite nose with tons of ancillary aromas. Taut acidity, good flavor and a lengthy finish. Sometimes the wines which are the hardest to describe are those where all the components are in perfect balance; there's no one thing that knocks you out, but in harmony they combine to produce something exceptional.

Chateau Calon Segur Vertical Tasting (Crystal Wines shop, Valley Point): Blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Double decanted for 1.5 hours. Intense dark garnet with just a slight brick red at the rim. Perfume nose with black fruits element, still primary, nice ripe blackberry, plum, hints of earthy, dusty notes and chocolate, toasty oak. Robust and structure entry, showing dusty earthiness along with blackcurrant, blackberry, mineral, mint and fresh herbs, violet and oak integrated well. It has a firm chewy tannins and long persistent finish. Very good and in a big, powerful style but at the same time austere and backwards. This may not be in its drinking window and need another few more years.

Has a very expressive nose of black currants, cassis, smoky gravel and a hint of mean green. Quite smooth and rich for Calon Segur and very 2000 with a rustic intensity and great concentration along with vineyard typicity. Quit full on the mid-palate which leads to a complex finish with strong notes of dark minerals, roasted peanuts and gravel still with strong tannins. There is a hint of green which is typical of Calon Segur at this age but I would bet on this beauty down the road. 91+

A Classic Saint-Estèphe, the Calon-Ségur 2000 offers up sumptuous aromas of steeped blackberries, forest floor, wet wood, game, char, asphalt, saddle leather, violets, and brown sugar. The influence of the estate vineyard's deep gravelly soils is evident in the nose and in a delicate vein of minerality, that sits like filagree atop velvety, caressing tannins. It's developed nicely, with no hard edges and a pleasing and lengthy finish.

This is really great. Thanks to Bennett for this bottle as well. It has classic Medoc markers of dark red cherry/berry, some earth and soil. It even has a nice spice box perception. In terms of mouthfeel and swallow, I would say it is on the more delicate side of St. Estephe. This 15 year old is drinking well now and certainly has a while before it peaks.

Decanted for 3 hours and drank over 2. This wine today needs 6 hours decant. The last glass was coming alive. On the nose (after 5 hours) we have dark brooding fruit, gingerbread spices, hint of tobacco. On the palette we have medium body with severe tannins, for this age surprising. The word austere comes to mind. Seems a bit unbalance while I wait for the fruit. Minerals galore, tannins, alcohol, and spice. Indeed a stubborn wine with a lot of future potential. Will try again in four years.

Ten hours of aeration in decanter, and this still wasn't ready by the time it hit my glass; though it fleshed out and settled down just 15 minutes afterward, and continued to do so. Femininely styled, this dark ruby colored, med-full bodied wine shows no sign of age, and is still a few years away from entering its peak window. Nervous and disjointed at first (even with 10 hours of air) pour, this eventually turned the corner and opened up to reveal some true beauty and class. Not too darkly fruited, this understated effort emphasizes elegance and finesse more than extraction and ripeness. A solid future; give this a decade. recommended
Served single-blind (we were told the vintage, though not the region), a minty/camphor aspect kept gnawing at me and I was in Napa for a while, but ultimately guessed Tuscan BDX blend given the acidity and overall balance and because I was told it was 'in my wheelhouse' (which I took to mean, 'Italian').
Blind I thought this was a Margaux because of the silky texture and elegance. Wonderful nose of asphalt, leather, smoke and dark fruit that leads to and perfectly balanced palate of coffee, dark fruit and nice chocolate notes. Creamy texture that is full and round in the mouth. Medium+ finish. A nice surprise.

Opened another bottle 3 years after my last tasting and included a 6 hr splash decant. The wine shows no visual sign of age. Bottle fill into neck. There is no sediment in the bottle. Really benefited from decanting It smells of mushroom and cedar, with hints of eucalyptus. The body is medium/full with angular texture. Finish medium with medium acidity.

Classic St. Estephe. Deep red color, some lead, some dust, darker cherry. Tannins seem a bit soft, but balanced, so unclear if awkward phase or just meant to drink on younger side. Enjoyable.

This sat in the glass a long while. When I finally got to it, it smelled like fish tank. This bottle was not corked or flawed - I think this just broke down with time and showed its true nature.

Taste the pencil lead on this bottle quite a bit. Fruit is soft but tannins are quite present, even after a couple hours. I wonder whether it's still young actually because more air and it got better. After time soft dried cherry fruit. Light and delicate.

Lovely rusted garnet rim but still deep and dark at its center, this beauty is well into it's window, but with years to go. After the required decant it begins to reveal in waves the still substantial stony fruit, broad tannins and wonderful dirt which is the heart of this wine. Medium weight and actively fleshy. Very good.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Purchased on futures for $55. Opened in the morning and then decanted about 3 hours before dinner at a French bistro. Moderately sedimented. Dark crimson color. Sweet red fruit and crushed stones on the nose. Notes of pencil shavings, tar, tea and tobacco leaf and currant. I really enjoyed this wine but it will still improve with time. I'll try another bottle in 5 years. Toward the low end of my score now but should improve to the upper end. 92-94 points

From half-bottle. The wine offered a rather subtle nose of floral notes, dark fruit, cherry, sweet tobacco, leather, truffle, earth, balsamic notes as well as hints of cedar, pencil shaving and tea. On the palate the wine showed sour cherry, blackberry, some black currant, pencil shaving, leather, mushroom and balsamic notes, paired with medium plus slightly tart acidity, medium-plus well-integrated tannin and incredible length. A very good, medium-bodied, balanced Bordeaux that drank very well after two hours in the decanter.

TN: Calon Segur vertical (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Dark fruit expression, plum, cassis, ink, lead pencil and mineral. Good concentration, chewy, a bit rustic and noticeable structure. Very good wine but a bit disappointing considering the vintage.

Purple hue in the glass. Vanilla and blueberries. Moderate length though over a narrow profile. Needs at least a couple of hours in the decanter. And probably 3-4 more in the bottle before drinking too many more.

Pre-Christmas lunch (Michael Wignall at The Latymer, Pennyhill Park): As with the 2000 Cos served just before it, this has a distinctly cool, ferric quality to it initially, but then opens up far more generously to display a charming fruitiness lacking in its predecessor. It may not have the impeccable structure and immaculate tannins of the Cos but it's more of a crowd pleaser at the moment.

If you're a fan of St Estephe and you would like to enjoy the power and fruit precision of Bordeaux's 2000 vintage without breaking the bank, then this wine is for you. Decanted and aerated for one hour and drank over two. Very deep concentrated crimson color, barely any hints of aging, this wine is beginning to open up but is way far from its maturity. Nonetheless, the nose is rich with cassis, dark red berries, sweet tobacco, cedar. Powerful entry into the palate, this wine stuns by its balance of fruit, precision, power and purity, all reflective of the 2000 vintage. Coats mid palate with red fruits and cassis, graphite, offering shy hints of the complexity and potential that is yet to emerge. Nice finish, decently long with powerful tannins and great acidity confirming the longevity of this truly nice St Estephe. To be continually tried over the next two decades.

HDH '90 vs '00 BDX Comparative Tasting (Chicago, IL - Spiaggia): I was excited to try this as I own some, and many online notes are rather concerning. Happily, this came across as a good quality St. Estephe just closed. Like the '90, a little funk on the nose. Otherwise shows a little red fruit and shunt down behind considerable structure. This will need lots of time. Tannins not of the same quality as Montrose/Cos, but I think this will be a fine St Estephe. Hold. B/B+ for now.

fragrant was sipping out of the cork whilst I was still unscrewing got my saliva drooling for this wine. Beautiful nose of berries and a hint of mushroom and some meat once the wine is poured, took a sip and.... felt like infanticide... it was bitter, with big tannins, wow its tight, left in glass to breath......
3 hours later
much better, but still not quite ready, but showing much more on the palate and the nose is getting out more, will wait for a few more hours and see....
6 hours later
starting to be enjoyable, tannins soften on the palate, can feel the structure of the wine and the nose expanded to some chocolate, toffee and vanilla. Will stick my remaining bottles in the cellar for at least 5 years before trying another
Quick TN - Typical young CS that was a little tight at first. Opened up beautifully, but this is still a pup and needs another 10 years. What struck me was the clarity and purity of the red fruit. Really a wonderful display of intense cassis and cherry, with some tobacco and earth appearing with more air. Wonderful balance in the mouth and the wine has a good amount of heft. This may be profound when it is ready. For now - 94 Pts

Deep dark garnet. Very little ocher edges, but overall very dense, vital and fresh. Dominant Fruit aromas of ripe Cherries and dark Berries. Some Fruit in Rum. Floral characteristics come with fresh Herbs and Licorice. Some Oak and decent Sweetness. Precise, elegant and complex. Beautiful! More Fruit! Flavors of Cherries, Black- and (sour) Redcurrants. Vibrant freshness. Little dried Herbs, Licorice and Sweetness. Traces of Vanilla. Finishes long and vital with Fruit (Cedar!), (approachable) Tannins and little Acidity. Firm, fresh and nicely structured.
A young Bordeaux from a great vintage! Youthful and mostly driven by delicious fruit and freshness with some secondary characters emerging. You cannot ignore the tannins, but they are surprisingly accessible. Pleasant, complex and rich in detail. Drinks fine now, but is probably even better in 10+ years. The unusual but not unwelcome failure of the 2000s to close up so far somehow manages to extend even to the historically austere Ch. Calon-Segur, whose 2000 is, as they say, singing. The aromas had me giddy with anticipation right from the get-go as I poured it out from the decanter--it smelled like I was standing on top of a vat of red berry fruit that was at its absolute peak of freshness and ripeness but just starting to steep into something sweeter and richer like some amazingly luscious pie filling, with the attendant aromas filling the room. It tastes much deeper in pitch than you expect from the red-scented aromatics, though, as it has more blackish tones, but the fruit's primary sweetness still saturates a lot of the tannin. It has a subtle pencil-shavings accent but the main theme here is how pure and expressive the fruit is. This might be the friendliest, easy-to-love Calon I've ever had.

„One Wine - Three Vintages“-Blind Tasting. Flight 8: Château Calon-Ségur. We tasted 1990, 2000 and 2010. The 1990 had aged very well and offered a mature nose with animally and medicinal notes. It was balanced and might even continue to improve for another three to five years. The 2000 offered a balanced palate, but was closed and seemed to be in a dumb phase. I would revisit it in five years. The 2010 was my favourite wine of the flight. Despite its youth and the youthful presence of oak the 2010 was balanced, creamy and super sexy! A great wine with great potential. In summary, I would drink the 1990 now and over the next five to ten years, would put the 2000 away and retry it in five years, and would try to get my hands on a twelve-case of the sexy 2010 for drinking mid- and long-term.

I have been underwhelmed by this wine since I first started drinking it years ago, working my way through the case I bought as futures. I've gifted and sold several bottles, and did not really enjoy the wine until today, when I found it to be supple, well integrated, and very drinkable. Others have enjoyed it earlier than I, but it finally seemed to come together for me. One bottle left, and I will hold it a little longer.
Quite light ruby colour, nose is plummy plus blackfruit and pencil shaving. The palate is complex with crushed stone, minerals, some sour black fruits on the finish. Drying tannins still pronounced and not the wine is not quite joined together but has potential to improve with age to a 93-94 point wine.

Pigeon's blood red. Decanted (some sediment already). Allowed to breath for 1 hour then drunk over 2 hours. Infanticide. Beautiful bouquet of roses, lilys, orange blossoms. Opening tastes were tight, though not tannic. Acids have largely resolved and rounded here. Fruits were still somewhat segregated. Clearly needs more time in bottle. Last glasses gave hints of what's to come -- red and black fruits. Some earth and cedar. Nose became even more generous. That said the finish was fairly short.

Smoky and creamy bouquet with cassis, blackberries, graphite and cedar. On the palate very juicy fruits as in the bouquet. A touch of sweetness; butterscotch. Soft tannin with still plenty of future. I scored the wine 94 because it is so lovely already. I expect the wine to remain around this score for at least a decade, and in fact it might even improve a bit.
Cos-Montrose Battle (Restaurant Bottles, Sas van Gent): Chocolate covered blackberries, peppery spices, cranberries, smoked ham and bacon, lascivious, seductive. Great wine, approachable now. Will last 10+ years. 18-18.5/20

PHMG WAG: The '09 Bordeaux (Chateau Lyon): A bonus pour in this tasting to see what can happen later after a good year. This was better than my last bottle in 2010. Garnet at the rim. Decanted for 2 hours before dinner. Some sedimentation, very opaque.
The wine was closed for the first 2 hours, but started showing abit thereafter. Lots of tannins. The second day the wine was much better and by the third it was pleasant.
NC Tasting 09 June 2012 JohnR's New House (JohnR's New House Wake Forest): Double decanted for about 4 hours before tasting. Very tannic, this wine still has quite a bit of stuffing left in it as can be found on the nose. Bright red currants; very fruity and backed by notes of earth and chocolate dust. The palate reveals red and black fruits along with wild berries, with hints of green on the mid-palate, before the tannins start shutting it down. A trip through the vinturi yields more red fruits on the palate but this wine just needs more time for the tannins to drop. The potential is there. Withholding my rating for now.

Raspberries, bramberries, leather, grafite and hints of smoke and kirsch on the very aromatic nose. Cool berryfruit intermingled with grafite, leather, smoke and exotic spices on the still quite tannic, but nicely balanced, elegant palate. Long aftertaste. More ready than a few years ago, starting to drink nicely, but not giving everything yet. Popped, poured and tasted. Needs a decent decant if tasted now. My present score is probably on the conservative side...

I regret posting my previous note that followed the opening of my first bottle. I allowed the bottle to remain open, tasting it occasionally. After 48 hours, it mirraculously opened up. it had darkened, the bouquet came forward with hints of leather and cedar. Quaffed well with cheese, very satisfying. there was a glass left the next day but maderization had begun.

This is a baby still. Wound up tight on the nose, but enough to give you black currant, graphite, herb, and cedar notes. In the mouth, still youthful and gripped by structure. Nevertheless, the raw material is obviously excellent and can't be ignored. The fruit is plentiful and cool, with terrific herb, graphite, earth, and cedar notes, along with tobacco undertones. Lots of acidity and a tannic finish. There is strong balance here, and it just needs another 5-10 years. A-

Expressive Cabernet nose. Much more approachable than I expected. A little low on acid for my taste, but great fruit on the palate, and a solid finish. Rated slightly behind Gruaud Larose and du Tertre, and just ahead of Lynch Bages in tonight's 2000 Bordeaux tasting. Still a baby.

Tasted blind. Very confected red fruit on the nose. Primary, good acidity, but loose - feels like it's in a strange place right now, not integrated. Needs 5+ years. I was surprised to discover what it was - does not feel like a St. Estephe. (0 views)

Tasted over five days. Day 1 was closed closed closed, showing very little fruit hidden behind solid tannin. Days 2 and 3 showed not much better. The tannins softened, but no intensity of fruit emerged. Day five showed the first hint of promise, though not much promise.

Calon Segur Thanksgiving vertical (Chestertown Maryland): Part of a Calon Segur tasting including '79. '88, '95, '00. The youngest of the 4 wines tasted. This wine has many years to go before it develops and opens up. Opened several hours before our tasting and did not seemto evolve much over that time. I believe this bottle is still closed down and will not be ready for a while. Looking forward to trying another in 5-10.

Wine Cellar - Bordeaux 2000 (Wine Cellar, Cape Town): (Tasted Blind): A medium to deep garnet colour with intense aromas of chocolate, wafer biscuits and dark fruits. Quite a rich, inviting palate that is powerful and bold with a silky texture and intense flavours reflecting the nose. A fleshy, creamy yet fairly solid wine with lively+ acidity, the tannins have density but are well integrated into the fruit. A long lingering and rather satisfying finish. a gentle giant?

briefly decanted. this sparked some debate, many calling it thin, yet with a beautiful nose (yes). i disagreed, seeing it as a mildly closed, developing wine of more than enough nuance to encourage another 5 years in the cellar. it's not beefy in the midpalate, i'll give the detractors that, but it certainly has enough grip to pull you in, and promise to keep you interested/motivated to revisit. 92+

Blind Red Throw Down! (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): Single blind. Mildly disappointing. Vanilla, cherry and oak. A little on the thin side. Long deep nose. At first, strong acids and tannins dominate, with long deep finish. After a few hours airtime, it softens up well and becomes a very supple balanced wine. Seems like more of a soft seducer than a powerhouse style. This will certainly age a long time.

Commanderie de Bordeaux: I had high hopes for this wine, and was a bit disappointed. A very healthy and youthful appearance. The bouquet was a bit foursquare, reluctantly offering up scents of cedary cassis, licorice and hints of creosote. Not giving up much on the palate either; full-bodied, with a great amount of stuffing, structure and tannin. Clearly this wine has lots of potential -- to say it is closed at present would be an understatement -- I wouldn't touch a bottle before 2015.

I must have had an off bottle b/c my experience was nothing like some of the positive reviews. We had the first sip after decanting for an hour. It was extremely tight, not giving up much on the nose or the palate, and it continued that way for the rest of the evening. There were a few moments where I recognized some typical bordeaux characteristics, but on the whole this was extremely disappointing. Very little fruit with harsh tannins. The wine novices who I had dinner preferred a $35 half bottle of 2003 CDP (a producer I had never heard of and don't remember) that we drank first to the Calon Segur.

Extremely disappointing. We had a power cut and ended up eating burgers and chips from the local chip shop in the dark around a fire, however it was very weak, lacked structure and the tannins were sharp, maybe not the best bottle. Live in hope.

Drank at Cork, I thought this was very good and enjoyed every last drop tremendously. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc
Dark ruby coloured with a young, pinkish rim - this wine had a georgeous nose that hit me right from the moment the glass was placed on the table. Dollops of slightly strange savoury leathery smells at first, intermingled with creosote, foral accents, dark cherries and blueberries. After some time in the glass, the leather faded slightly, with the cherries and berries coming to the fore and hints of spice coming out. Great nose, very intense, almost overwhelmingly so at times. Is this really a St Estephe?
Great, complex palate, with voluptuous cherries again and touches of exotic spice. Actually, everything about this wine was voluptuous - with opulent, fleshy, mouth-filling flavours, all nicely wrapped in a tight package of uplifting acid and very firm yet extremely supple tannins (ah, St Estephe here definitely) that kept the flavours focused. The finish was long and satisfying, with a flourish of lingering berries. It is oh so young at the moment, but already displaying a lovely balance. This one has enough stuffing to last it a good many years to come.
Another lovely 2000 Bordeaux. Are the 2005's really better?

My first of 6 bottles purchased as futures prior to release. It was lighter than I expected in color and body, but hardly disappointing. Dark ruby in color and very translucent, more like a lighter bodied and/or fully aged wine. Medium body, but a fruity an complex wine. Lots of Cherry (especially) and red fruits. A very nice wine coming along nicely. I look forward to opening the next bottle...

TB: Had at a Bordeaux tasting alongside an 00 LaGrange. Opened the previous night and decanted 5 hours prior to drinking. Much more clear and slightly lighter purple color than the LaGrange. This was absolutely singing. Nose showed tar, cherry with just a hint of some herbs. The palate was bursting with cherry. Expletives are all my notes say regarding the overall quality of the wine. That means it was really good.

The 3 Tenors of Saint Estephe (Calon, Cos & Montrose): 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996 & 2000 (New York City, NY): Wine No. 2 (2000 Calon Segur) Very dark ruby with purple hues, this was slightly lighter than the other two wines in the flight. Gorgeous nose that is packed with sweet blue berries, licorice and vanilla. This sexy, very full bodied and tannic wine has depth and voluptuousness with a layered mouth feel and a very looong finish. I wrongly picked it as the Cos. 96+ points . Tasted unblinded at 2000 Bordeaux horizontal at the home of Marshall Banker. Bright disc. Deep-to-opaque ruby/purple robe with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense mint, licorice, currants and vanilla. In addition, the nose shows a hint of greenness. Full-bodied on the palate, with big, dry tannins, medium acidity and similar flavors as for the nose. Medium, slightly dry finish. While clearly well-made, more fruit would make the future of this wine more predictable.

Total Eclipse Wine. Decanted two hours.

The bouquet is a little subdued right now, with some cassis but mainly secondary notes with herbs and some cedar.
The palate is quite focused with a tight grip.
Contrary to some notes I believe that this wine needs some additional time to come around. I will revisit in 5 years.

Another 5 years of age could help soften the wine.

from magnum pristinely stored, decanted 7 hours before serving. 91++??

I would say the wine has definitely evolved since I last tried it 8 years ago! Decanted and aerated for 90 minutes and drank over another 90 minutes. Dark ruby red color, some translucency on the rim. On the nose lots of cassis, dark red berries, leather, earth, pencil lead. Very precise on the palate, tactile entry, very good acidity and structure mid palate, tannins in full balance and a decently long masculine finish for this medium to full bodied wine. Not the most complex but still very gratifying, and not there yet in terms of maturity but pretty close.

Group average: 91.25 pts
Group rank: 40th out of 48

Tasting note:
Fine tobacco, leather, dark cherry fruit core, green minty notes as a herbal side and just a whiff of perfume.

Estephe

Neither tasted too young or too old but more just generally muted; not unattractive or unwieldy which makes me think it could reveal something elegant and quite attractive in next 5-10 years.
91 today which does not account for upside.

Better the second day, but even then it was drunk next to the remains of a bottle of Esprit de Pavie '09 and didn't come out as the preferred bottle...

Medium ruby color. Medium aromas of black fruit and preserved fruit. Light tertiary aromas of cedar and tobacco. Medium+ body, medium tannins, medium+ acidity. Soft tannins are well balanced. Outstanding wine that will age well.

Pepper initially, then some berry halfway through. After a 1 hr decant, this had a horrible imbalance of acid, and the tannins were imperceptible.

Too bad.

91 ambivalente poeng.

Complex.

Robust and structure entry, showing dusty earthiness along with blackcurrant, blackberry, mineral, mint and fresh herbs, violet and oak integrated well. It has a firm chewy tannins and long persistent finish.

The palate reveals red and black fruits along with wild berries, with hints of green on the mid-palate, before the tannins start shutting it down. A trip through the vinturi yields more red fruits on the palate but this wine just needs more time for the tannins to drop. The potential is there. Withholding my rating for now.

Restaurant purchase; decanted and consumed over 2 hours. Very supple and smooth for such a relatively young wine. Cherry and light smoke on the nose, and continuing through the tasting. Really enjoyable, and a good buy at the $70 I paid for my own too-small stash.

I very very nice nose with some notes I couldn't recognize. The taste however was not as pleasant, but might show better in 10 years.

The 3 Tenors of Saint Estephe (Calon, Cos & Montrose): 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996 & 2000 (New York City, NY): Wine No. 2 (2000 Calon Segur)
Very dark ruby with purple hues, this was slightly lighter than the other two wines in the flight. Gorgeous nose that is packed with sweet blue berries, licorice and vanilla. This sexy, very full bodied and tannic wine has depth and voluptuousness with a layered mouth feel and a very looong finish. I wrongly picked it as the Cos. 96+ points . This wine received seven 1st place votes (including mine).
