The cork pulled out so cleanly, I was positive the bottle was going to be good. But, this bottle was even better than expected! Truffles, chocolate, dried roses, tobacco, and black cherries popped in the nose. But, the showstopper here is the silky, sensuous textures that made the perfect backdrop for the earthy, black cherries, cocoa, Indian spice, peppercorns, and touch of leafy herbs in the finish. I hope I have another bottle, but, I’m afraid this was the final bottle from the case. It was perfect for Valentine’s Day. Do not decant. Pop, and pour. Drink from 2024-2030.

OMG #105 (Ann Arbor, MI): 12% abv. A lot of smoke on the nose. The palate here is stunning, featuring elegant dark red fruit, subtle tertiary notes of beef stock and shiitake mushroom, and an extremely silky texture. This beauty is at peak.

Opened to a dense juice, tannins still very much present but this wine opened up with more air. Lots of graphite and cigar box flavours. Has many more years ahead and should still get better with more cellaring. Overall nice balance and complexity. I would recommend decanting.

A simply beautiful bottle of wine and clearly shows why this is often referred to as the "Burgundy of Bordeaux." So silky smooth and finely delineated with classic aged Pomerol flavors of truffles, minerals and violet spices. More on the red fruit side with a creamy, savory texture and a fine, crisp finish that shows some green notes. Interestingly, a real smell and flavor of spearmint developed late in the glass. Very ready now and best after only a short decant.

Stunning. Cork saturated, broke in half, soft. Wine was bright and freah. Quintessential Bordeaux profile. Well integrated tannins and good fruit remaining. Intoduced friends to aged Birdeaux and all loved the profile of sweet tannins and black/red fruit. Excellent. Sorry nothing more but it was opened at my sons baby shower.

Sweet, sappy raspberry and redcurrant fruit; pencilly palate with a little truffle emerging. Despite following this rather closely for a couple of hours, this never really comes around though it did put on weight with air. Glad we caught this bottle when we did because it surely wouldn’t have improved with more age.

Tasted double blind. Definitely BDX in style. This had a exotic and candied fruit that made me think ripe Cab Sauvignon like 90 Montrose. Very exotic fruit (candied/baked strawberries and maybe some tropical), soy, beef bullion, sweet tobacco and leaf. The nose kind of dropped off with a little time. Palate is like the nose but better - lots of tobacco and leaf, savory beef w some sweetness - very 82 (by this point I knew), almost dripping. Finish is savory leaf and sweet. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-16.5/20.

Cigar, tobacco, raspberry and plum fruit. Silky, elegant and sexy with melted tannins. The crowd favorite among 8 bottles of 82 bordeaux- Gruaud Larose (advanced), Calon Segur, Beychevelle, Canon, La Fleur Petrus, and Pichon Baron.

This needs an hour of air to really get going and shows a lush but pencil-heavy nose that almost seems left bank until it hits the palate in a plush, supple, truffley, cedary, raspberry wave; the tannins have almost entirely melted away. At its apogee; in no immediate danger but I wouldn't hold indefinitely.

served about 70 minutes after opening without decanting. Initially not quite open and showing only some smoke. Two hours after opening there was more acidity on the palate after 20 minutes in glass. Showing better by now with tobacco notes and reasonable length on the palate. A little more than two hours in and the nose was really fragrant, showing more wood notes. Strangely showing metallic rust about 2½ hours in, and after 3 hours this became really fragrant, and showing some earthy notes. Not quite as good as the bottle last year, but still very nice.

Much better than the previous bottle. Popped and poured with no decanting was just perfect for this wine and bottle. Elegant, silky, soft and sexy, the wine is medium/full bodied, with a nose of truffle, cigar wrapper, rose petals, plums and cocoa, the wine finishes with finesse, refinement and earthy fruits. There is no reason to hold to this beauty hoping for more magic, this is at peak. If you are lucky enough to have a bottle, pop that cork!

Solid purple with brown tinge and garnet at the rim.
Mature Bordeaux nose, with most of the aromas in the lower register - coffee, rich dark soil notes, warm meat, cherries, walnuts - but there is a connection to the higher register with vanilla oak and a rather pleasant eucalyptus topnote.
On the palate the wine has an agreeable build-out, progressing from a tart red fruit character on the attack to a rich, full but not deep presence on the midpalate, echoing the notes present on the nose while expressing as no more than a middleweight - not a criticism, just an observation. Pleasant blood orange and persimmon skin flavors show a nice flash on the mid-palate, bringing a brightness not as evident on the nose.
The finish has a touch of astringency and more acidity, and is the least appealing part of the palate - leading you to sip more to get to the luscious mid-palate experience.
Drinking very well now.

Wine Dinner at Carbone (Carbone): Deep garnet core with some browning at the edge, clearly appeared older than its flight companion a 1982 Leoville las Cases, which was far deeper color and virtually no sign of age. The nose was filled with soft dark red fruits, earth, tar and smoke. Palate was so smooth and silky, clearly benefiting from both the 82 vintage richness wrapped in pomorol silk. Dark red fruits were a little muted, this was clearly not as well stored as the LLC which was fresher and younger. Good balance and complexity. On its own a very nice glass but suffered vs the night's offerings

This bottle seemed more advanced than other bottles. The nose, with its truffle, cherry, plum and tobacco showed nicely. The texture was soft and silky, but the finish much shorter than previous bottles. This is probably just past its peak and requires drinking.

When did this wine become so expensive? I remember buying this just a few years ago for a song. I guess others have caught on to how good this is. Rich, plush, velvety and deep, there is a purity of fruit, truffle, chocolate and earthy essence and plush, opulent cherry finish that leaves you wanting more. This is probably fully mature and does not require further aging.

At home. Decanted for one hour and drank over the following three. Fully open nose of violets, dark sweet fruit, damp earth and hints of mocha. Rich and sweet on the palate. Not a tremendous amount of depth but wonderful balance and silky texture. Long finish emphasizing sweet fruit and earth. With additional air this didn't get much better but it was great from beginning to end. In a nice spot to be enjoyed now.

Lightening color. Glorious, perfectly mature nose with plummy fruit, caramel and herbs. Delicate, authoritatively silky feel. Understated sweetness punctuated by light green herbs and a long, whispering finish. Not the most assertive wine but at a perfect point of equipoise, balance and elegance. Older Pomerols...sigh.

Beautiful elegant wine, with far more fruit than I expected. However managing the wine will make a big difference in getting the best out of it..... Initial nose was very musty and palate a little thin. Decanted half and left half in bottle. The decanted half opened up over about 2 hours, hitting its peak at the 2+ hour mark (went through 3-4 stages in that time). Elegant quite velvety but limited fruit. I then poured from the bottle (at about 3 hours) and it was really great. Much more fruit survived here. So the decant (at least in a broad based decanter) probably not the ideal way. My thoughts would be to double decant (if you have the time) – and leave in bottle between 1-2 hours before drinking OR to pour out the top 8 cm (2 glasses) into a decanter, sip that slowly after about 1 hour and on the 2 hour+ mark pour the rest from the bottle.

Decanted 90 minutes before Christmas Eve dinner and consumed over the following two hours. This was an evening with close family, and no notes taken. Still a vibrant ruby color. Opened with a little barnyard that blew off by the time we got to it. Dark fruit, cedar, mocha and a bit of baking spice with a long finish. I've had a four of these over the years from a case purchased on release. At its best, this is a 95+ point wine that's like drinking liquid silk. This bottle did not get there, but it was still excellent. Won't rush to finish my remaining bottles, but it's time to start drinking these up.

Deep garnet color. Aromas of blackcurrents, tobacco, cedar and spices. Silky, sweet, complex fruit in the mouth with great structure and depth. Beautifully integrated tannins and a long, lingering finish. A very classy, elegant wine that is nearing the end of its peak drinking period. A wine like this is why people pay so much to drink a great bottle of Bordeaux!

Wow. My first experienced of properly aged Bordeaux, and I see the fuss is justified. Dark red. Intoxicating nose of fruit, spice, chocolate, leather, cedar and cigarbox. Smooth linear palate with little residual tannin, and fine minerality. A lovely, lovely wine.

Color is lighter red with very little browning. Gorgeous nose of sweet clay/earth with notes of char, tobacco and ancient forest. The tannins are fully resolved and the wine is perfectly ready now. It is light to medium-bodied and lacks real power but it is a lovely, silky, mature Pomerol with complex flavors that echo the nose. A wonderful companion for food (in this case the blue chicken at 11 Madison, NYC) as it is so seductive as it glides over the tongue. A deeply satisfying wine and I don't get the feeling it will make old bones so I'd drink up.

Wow. Blinded I would have thought this was the '82 Petrus or Lafleur. The wine took about an hour to get going in the decanter. When it woke the nose offered up wet leather, cigar box, cedar, licorice and tar. In the mouth this wine had great balance and deep, ripe black fruit with a long, lingering finish. I got notes of sweet licorice on the palate, too. As the wine sat in the decanter it kept putting on weight and sweetness in the mid-section. The ripe tannins added strength to the wine but were not obtrussive. While not as heavy as port texturally, it did have a fruit profile that I would associate with other classic right bank wines that use that descriptor. This wine has many years ahead of it but is drinking great now.

Wine-Pages Pomerol Offline (Alba, London.): Dirty! This could be quite a fleshy Musar on the nose. Ripe and voluptuous. Very 1982. Sexy. Tooth-rottingly sweet fruit. Very appealing in a slightly slutty way. Just very very fun. *****
UK Wine-pages Pomerol Off-line (The Alba, London): Lovely, complex spicy, funky nose - notes of fruit cake. Quite generous still on the palate, harmonious, fully mature and a lovely drink with fresh acidity carrying a good length finish. Excellent. 90.

Older Bords at Taste: Blind 2 - Nice nose of cedar, with a touch of mint over black currants. Perfumed. Still showing great color. (Chris K. did let on that this was an '82). Medium-full bodied with cedar, butter, waxy red currant fruit. Less fruit driven as the finish approaches. Good. Probably not getting any better than this.

The perfume included scents of plums, herbs, chocolate, cedar and red fruits. The rich mouth feel was elegant. The palate swam in a river of cherries, strawberries & raspberry fruits. However, to be truthful, the nose was better than the palate. I've had better bottles of his wine. This bottle seemed to have matured prematurely.

Purchased on release, perfect storage at Chicago Wine Company. Good color, no orange. Beautiful bouquet of crushed cherry and red plum. Unfortunately the palate does not live up to the promise. Good attack, then abruptly drops off. Clean finish. Enjoyable but not a top ‘82 Pomerol. Not worth the $250 it now commands.

Plums, ripe red and black fruits, leafy spearmint, spices and chocolate notes. Opulent layers of silky, velvety fruit float over your palate. Beautiful wine.

Excellent. 90.

Brett, brett and more brett. Unforutantely, couldn't taste anything else. Still drinkable to a few members of the party.

Sweet fat cherry fruit. Delicious and port like from the moment it was opened.

Blind tasting four 1982 Bordeaux, distant fourth place. nice rich forward fruit, stinky, touch of iron and grass, more of the same on the palate, very nice, rich, simple black cherry fruit to enjoy, medium finish.

Much better this time. Delightful and easy to appreciate. Lots of blueberry. Mature, fruity and altogether nice.

Disappointing again. Mature color. Deep plummy bouquet - for 20 minutes. Not much fruit. Thin texture, acidic finish. An “oublier.”

Rich, classical, cedary bouquet. Flavors are also rich and full. Needs 3-5 years. Should develop well, scored conservatively for now.
