  • Tonight this showed best of the tasting opposite a 1990 Silver Oak Napa: Bright garnet colored, medium full bodied, full forward vibrant red berry and cherry fruits accented by tangy spice, tea, hints of cedar and notes of cigar box with moderate tannins on a long lingering finish.

  • Mushrooms, roasted red bell pepper, herbal notes, scorched earth and spice, with some red red fruit. Decent structure with smooth tannins and a bittersweet finish.

  • We recently did Bosche vertical of 1990, 1994 and 1998. Thought we were drinking straight cab and not Bosche vineyard. Wine smelled amazing and kept getting better after decanting.

  • Simply beautiful wine. When they say "old school" this is the stuff they're talking about. Ripe but not overripe, great fruit but not a bomb, structured but not coarse. Very modest alcohol but very generous flavor, tone, and finish.

  • At Bouchon in Beverly Hills. Beautiful deep red color rivaling a much younger vintage. On the nose, eucalyptus, floral, and scorched earth with a hint of sea breeze. Saddle leather as well. In the mouth, medium bodied sweet red fruit. Finish is remarkably long with bittersweet fruit.

  • Tasted at Freemark Abbey vertical tasting - http://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2012/12/freemark-abbey-cab-vintage-horizontal.html.

This bottle was suprisingly lean and austere, not what I recall from this Napa vintage generally, but revealed such against the '92 which showed markedly differently. Garnet colored with a brickish rim, this was light bodied with properly balanced but slightly tart black cherry and black berry fruits accented by tobacco, tea, cigar box and leather on a short modest short finish.

  • Medium garnet with a touch of bricking at the rim. Medium bodied and balanced. Typical notes of moss, eucalyptus, tea and mocha. Would have appreciated this a lot more by itself. This struggled to stand up to an exceptional 1992 Bosche and Freemark 1986 Napa.

  • - Ruby color. It's balanced with a light/medium body. Smooth texture with a long finish - Wow, drank with a wonderful meal after a great Sequoia Grove cab. Complex, rich, heady not very aromatic. So smooth, little tanin. Too bad I only have one more bottle.

  • Smoky, dry currant, funky soil nose with screaming acidity and plush fruit on the palate making it silky, crisp, and juicy. Wow, this absolutely explodes with food to show more complex dimensions of herb, mineral, sweet tobacco. Certainly mature, this shows great refinement for classic Napa Cabernet.

  • Bordeaux vs. Napa Cab: mano-a-mano in 4 rounds; 9/7/2011-9/8/2011: Wonderful nose of woodsmoke and spice. Nice sweetness on the attack, and then some surprisingly high acidity kicks in leaving a bitter note. This seems very Bordeaux. I think this might be just past its prime, but still lovely tonight.

  • Had a chance to taste at Freemark Abbey and the tastin room manager pulled out a few interesting wines. Small notes as there was a lot of conversation
2007 Freemark Abbey CS. Lovely ripe but focused wine but little short on the finish.

2006 Josephine, Broad flavours, berries, oak and oak spices, slightly rough tannins but not althougher at the moment.

1991 Bosche; great wine, bright berries, tobacco, great balance and structure, finishes with a bit of tea, very nice, clean

1995 Sycamore: another very good wine, more primal than the 91, still very fruit forward, nice structure, good length and finish

  • Excellent cork condition. Beautiful deep red and translucent but no browning bodes well forthis 18 year old wine. Not fruit forward but rather a solid core of dark fruit lingers with fine tannins. Balanced with a persistent finish. Excellent muthfeel with a refined texture and weightlessness on the palate. Somewhat primary without significant secondary complexity. Really drinking beautifully and exceeded my expectations. Gentle and refined, this could pair almost any meat dish because of its impeccable restraint. A classic Napa cab from what I think is the sweet spot of Cali winemaking in the early 1990s before the cult crazy era. Gorgeous. Plenty of life left but at peak now so drink anytime.

  • Very dark opaque red. Good nose of red Fruit and cedar, fruit very evident in in the mouth- concentrated. Tannins smoothed out by time but still acidic and spciy at the end. Long aftertaste. Not heady but very nice taste. Excellent wine.

  • A fine year for California Cabs. Scubarex brought this to a Haggis happy hour last week. Holding up very well and drinking fine now. Meaty notes with some spice on the finish. Medium to full bodied. 91 points.

  • Scubarex brought this to happy hour at Haggis'. Garnet color, with notes of saddle leather, plums and mature dark fruit. Fully integrated and very pleasant, with plum, earth and fresh herbs.

  • Drank a bottle of 1990 Bosche and a bottle of 1991 Bosche side by side with a grilled chicken with plum sauce dinner. Four of us tasted the wines and there were differing opinons. All thought both wines were good with three preferring the 1991 and one the 1990.

The 1991 had more pronounced fruit. As noted above it was the more popular of the two. However, I thought the fruit showed some evidence of being a bit "cooked" or "stewed". This wine evolved more over the course of consumption than the 1990 and did seem to balance out some as time wore on. I am not convinced that the 1991 Napa Cabs are holding up as I have experienced this flavor with others I opened recently. My recommendation is drink the 1991s ASAP.

The 1990 was a most balanced wine with the fruit medled into the tannins. The fruit was definately fading but I though all in all it was an enjoyable wine. It showed characterictics of Napa with a bit of earth. If I had more of the 1990 I would also open it ASAP.
