  • Excellent
This has probably plateaued and is on the downslope, but still drank beautifully from PnP. See Dec. 2021 TN. Maybe some more earthiness this time and drank in one night.

  • Reading through the most recent TNs from 1 - 2 years ago, I conclude that time has been kind to this wine. It seems I'm lucky that I waited. This was an excellent expression of the style. The purity and freshness of the berries / cranberry and red fruits was irresistible. Pleasing damp earth and farm and forest elements would peek in and out. Perfect acidity. Medium finish. Clean and nice on its own and with food. On the second night it did take on a bit of that lactic quality that I dislike in so many, but here it was a slight, secondary characteristic and it actually added positively to the experience. 12% abv.

  • This was great. Nose was cherries -mostly sour, herbs - mint, and passing by a stable. On the palate this was juicy and earthy with a touch of tingle on the tongue - first sip. Structure was soft but evident and the acidity provided the frame for a delicious experience.

  • Pop n' pour and this was uber funk-filled and spritzy -- to my palate not drinkable. Put it into a decanter and not much better. Poured back into bottle and tried the next night. This has tamed way down and is now enjoyable, though still funky and leaning into its natural style. Not for the faint of heart.

  • Red wax top. Transparent ruby. Nose feral red cherries, wild/animal, ? Brett. Palate light bodied, red cherries with a wild streak, strongly mineral, slightly chalky finish. Light, 12% abv.

on day 2, prickly gassy mouthfeel. Lactic/sour/nutty. ruined by the brett. unfortunate.

  • On PnP spritzy, unashamedly natty and not very expressive at all. Thus I decided to put it in a decanter for an hour or two. The nose has this idiosyncratic natural wine character of cherry fruit with a distinct orange peel edge. On the bitter side but not overly so. The body is splendidly lean with very nice acidity to give it a nicely vibrant feel. There is practically no tannin to speak of so it goes down very easily despite a bitter character similar to the nose. The finish is clean and pleasant but it is missing the lip-smacking effect of many more successful wines from the region. The glass half full assessment of this wine would be that it is massively drinkable in a clearly natty but in no way flawed way. The opposite would be that it is simplistic and straightforward and not particularly exciting. In the end it is a very well made, thoroughly enjoyable wine that will excite the natural wine crowd but probably not the rest. I’m probably not looking to rebuy but then I will not decline if someone offers me a glass.

  • While highly overpriced at a restaurant due to the scarcity of Metras’ wines (and the very old vines), this Beaujolais is actually more a Fleurie outside the borders. Very nice with a spicy Asian repast, this deep garnet(not purple) wine held forth strong notes of black pepper, a tart red berry acid, and some nice cabernet franc-type funk. The finish is a bit wanting right now but may expand. There is definite depth to he layers, though not as great as Lapierre Morgon cuvee ML or Foillard Cote de Py.

    Carafer.

  • A big step up from the Printemps bottling. Coravined then returned a week later to open. This was best after an hour of air.

Hazy pale ruby color, with bright raspberry confit and pickling spice aromatics. Fresh and acidic with robust underlying structure. It’s a little mousey, with butterscotch and popcorn on the finish. As with many natural wines, it’s interesting, but not independently delicious.

  • Closed initially but after some 30 mins was much better. Candied red fruit, funky, mineral. Light to medium bodied, saline, acidic with sour cherry towards the medium finish. A tad simple but enjoyable nonetheless;came short of expectations based on the producer's legacy. 89-90

  • congrats J+J: slightly cloudy ruby.
Nose candied cherries with a wildness to the aromas. Palate slight spritz at first, but better after a shake. Strongly mineral character to the red fruit, long finish.
Metras for me has been a minefield, sometimes dynamite and sometimes blowing up with flaws. This was a better bottle on that spectrum. 91 pts

  • This isn't as complex as Metras' other bottlings... but still so fresh and crunchy

  • Nice sweet (and a little sour) strawberry. More rustic and earthy than his beaujolais, and not nearly as good.
