Drank the 1999 and 2000 side by side , garnet color , in the 99 the acidity is more unbalanced compared to the '00. Also the nose less ecpressive and on the palate the '00 was more fruity and complex, both had a quite long finish

An impressive effort in a so-so vintage for Rioja. Intense and well balanced this is not an "in your face" modernist style of Rioja. It is well balanced with the brightness of the fruit to the fore. Tasted on the young side, this has plenty of stuffing. This will go on and improve for a few years yet. On this tasting I will seek out more Pagos Viejos.

Aromatically - stunning black licorice, nut meg, sweet spice dark fruit. On the palate not the largest artadi but has great pedigree with a sweet palate and beautiful elegance.

wonderful and ready to drink....time was our friend....not sure what these 70 and 80 point scores are all about, unless they are just personal preferences against the modern style...because this is definately modern tempranillo....But, man, this is good stuff - balanced, soft fruit...delicious....
EDIT: I left a glass in the bottle to finish later....left it on the counter with the cork in....came back to finish the last glass 48 hours later.....no temperature control, a bottle full of air besides the last glass.....Yet, this was still rockin!

See my notes dated 7/1/2009 rated 84 points - seems like a few more months add a nice level of complexity. tannis are a lot softer. again, i don't see this one needing more time. its at its prime or super close.

Had this one blind: One of the more modern wines of Artadi I have had. Noticeable wood all around, nice balance with kicking acidity. Loads of cherries and some spices. Reasonable finish. Tannis are there but seem integrated, though might soften further. with that said, it seems ready to be enjoyed now, and i see no point in holding any further, though it could. nice wine that went very well with pizza.

Spanish Gems from World Class Producers (Caveau): Nice brick red to a brownish red hue. Earthy notes underneath aged raspberries laced with glycerin. Gentle smooth mouthfeel of cherries and an almost watery prune juice. Quite unimpressionable.

Spanish Gems from World Class Producers (Caveau, Singapore): This wine was starting to show garnet tones on its rim. There was an initial wave of glycerin from the alcohol on the nose, which was otherwise rather muted. Some swirling later, some flavours of meat, dark cherry, plums and an undertow of wood and dried earth emerged shyly. With more air, the cherry notes started coming to the fore, along with savoury umami scents. Really fresh acid on the palate - something that has marked most of the Atardi wines I have tasted, reflective perhaps of the high altitude and the cold Pyrenees wind in the Northern region of Rioja. Fresh prune flavours showed themselves here, supported by the high acidity and firm tannins. This had a nice sense of balance to it, but seemed seemed rather backward and un-evolved for a 1999, with the flavours rather locked up and a strange hollowness showing in the mid-palate. Otherwise, the finish was okay, with mineral and wood tones. Not a bad wine at all, but not one that raised my interest too much.

Black cherry, baking spice, star anise immediately emerge. This is a silky, elegant wine that is medium weight, with forest floor, a hint of lead pencil, and firm tannins. Notably absent for me was leather, tea, tobacco that I associate with Rioja, but perhaps this needs more time. Overall a delicious well balanced, polished wine, whose only flaw may be that it lacks typicity.

Cloudy deep black ruby. Roast coffee, graphite, mint, blackberry pie and saddle leather. Thick and fat in the mouth with oaky, baked fruit, cassis and mineral flavors. The tannins are a bit course still and the acid seems fine. Thins out a bit on teh minty finish. Much better than the last bottle tasted but I would bet the oak will soon overtake the fruit thats still here.

Scarsdale Spain Offline (Meritage Restaurant in Scarsdale): Nose of mint and red fruit. Initially alcoholic, but blows off quickly. Great dark red fruit, with excellent spice charateristics. Good, thick structure with nice easy tannins. Very very nice. Tied for group's #3 WOTN.

Chicago Wine Geeks taste Spain (My place: Lincoln Square, Chicago): Ruby red in the glass. Initially a straight forward red fruit nose that developed some interesting vanillin-creme brule notes over the evening. A very nice palate of currants and sweet red fruit. Some toasty notes. Well framed with underlying acidic structure. A sound and tasty wine - but not distinguished in tonight's line up.

Deep black ruby. Complex nose of grpahite, leather, smoke, mineral, baked plums and fruity chocolate. Sauve and silky in the mouth with less than fresh black fruit and mineral flavors. The nose promises more than the palate delivers. Medium weight flavors are low in acid and a bit flat. Finish is short and a bit muddled. Good but not more. Drink soon.

Seattle Tasting Group does Spanish wines (Seattle, WA, USA): The nose is spicy with dill and caramel. Wow, the palate is cedary with tons of spice, heavily wooded, way too much for the fruit at hand. I didn't enjoy this terribly although others seemed to like it.

Smoky, coffee notes. Mature Rioja, sour at the end. Hoped for more.

Mellow pepper and cherry flavours, pleasant, soft and balanced. I don't think it will improve with more aging but it will still drink nicely.
