  • Double decanted 2 hours prior to consumption.
This was kicking. No one dared venture this was an 05! So much life in this. On the nose this is wild, savoury and salty: leather (the chewed baseball glove straps you munch on as a kid), subdued barnyard, slight oak spices, earthy and some hints of dark plums and red berries. This is intoxicating with deep layered smells happening. The palate was screaming tannins when I popped it open but it settled down with air: chewy tannins, lovely acidity and a long finish on wilderness (herbs, feral and musk) and memories of crushed stones. Hot damn this is kicking!

  • From sensory. Wow this is very Grezeaux and very savory. Damn. Like a grizzly bear - tons of pyrazines - serious bell pepper and some tobacco - blackberry fruit - some black cherry. The nose is potent and full of flavor - really gripping. The palate enters powerful with herbal tobacco and a bit of bell pepper and supported by brambly blackberry and black cherry fruit. Great grip - with time a beautiful perfume robe - maybe a little dry aged meat and some tiny berries on the nose. The palate has that soy umami as well and is velvety and deep but supported by solid acid and some dusty tannins. The finish continues this and a pulse of the tobacco comes back. Grippy. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5-17.5/20.

  • Powerful aromas of cassis, tobacco, and earth, with just a hint of green and minimal brett. Rich and saturating, almost glossy, with superb concentration and fine tannins. There's a twist of juicy acid that cleans up the backend before leading into a long dark fruit finish. This is a superb bottle that is drinking beautifully but could also age quite a bit longer.

  • This vintage is darker and richer than usual. A lovely open and aromatic nose with gravelly blackcurrant fruit, green bell pepper and fresh rich earth. The palate is well balanced, still a rasp of fine tannins, plenty of fruit and a good long finish, what a good vintage of this cuvee which is drinking well with time ahead

  • From magnum. Opened an hour before serving but not decanted. This was just fabulous. Inky black colour. Lots of dark fruit on the nose and palate. Some hints of bell pepper in a long, precise finish. Some pretty experienced tasters were stunned by this with plenty of comments along the lines of: “I had no idea that the Loire could produce wines like this!”.

  • Awesome and got stronger sitting on counter for 3 strong nights. Loads of sediment in last glass but oh so great to drink now with old world qualities galore.

  • Lovely nose of dark fruit, some green notes, and tobacco. Good acidity with medium+ tannins and more dark fruit notes, gamey flavors, and overall quite savory palate. Long finish. Really an excellent wine and could easily use another 5 years or so to be at peak.

  • And in the overachiever of the night spotlight, the Grezeaux. Red fruit, herby, peppery, bright acid and long complex finish.with just a slight hint of animal fur. Magical for cost. A-

  • Not sure if wine was flawed, but pretty sure tasted wet cardboard. Wine is a but gritty and fruit muted

  • Ondanks de 14 jaar op de teller nog steeds stevig en lekker. Vooral braam en cassis (100% Cab Franc ). Een van mijn lievelingen uit de Loire

  • This wine has not changed a bit in last 5 years, same tasting note as then. Old World Loire funk all the way. Love it.

  • Really beautiful, very Grézeaux nose. It's tough sledding on the palate, though. Served with prime rib roast on Christmas Eve helped but this wine has gone in a direction I didn't anticipate. I remember talking to Matthieu after tasting through the barrel samples of the 2005s. He had never seen anything like them in terms of the numbers. The ripeness and also the tannins were the highest he'd ever measured and he wasn't sure what to make of the wines. He and I were much more confident about how the more classically styled 2004 would age and that has mostly played out. This wine seems to be drying out a bit, but I'm not really sure. I also think that given the changing climate and bigger, riper vintages, I think he's learned a thing or two about tannin management. I guess this should be buried for 3-5 more years, then check again.

  • Great showing. Lush dark fruit balanced by earth and stone and acidity. Open for business. Must be lots of bottle variation here, is my guess.

  • Good, but not as good of a bottle as the one I drank a few years ago. This one does not have the piercing clarity of aroma and flavor that the best bottles have. The fruit is dark and rich, the minerality is there, but everything feels a bit obscure to me, just not a great bottle of this very good wine.

  • Opened an decanted for two hours. I should have listened to myself and not opened another bottle yet. This remains in an awkward stage, tannic and astringent. Better the next day. There is certainly good fruit here but I'm not feeling the love from this wine right now.

  • Wonderfully young, with dark fruit and earthy loam. While the franc had a hint of astringency that ducked its head several times over the first few hours, it proved to be a minor setback to what finally proved to be a very pronounced black cherry and wet earth profile. A wonderfully layered finish that only improved on the second day. The continuing evolution of this subtle beauty should be very interesting and rewarding.

  • Seth's note nails it. Wonderful wine, full of tobacco, earth, and red fruited Loire Cab Franc goodness.

  • Deep nose. Perfumed and pretty earth good complexity touch of green pepper funk. Palate is tart. Good acid. Lots of dirt. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

  • Still very young and primary. Maybe just a hint of Baudry brett, but mostly clean. This is ripe and dark for Grezeaux, with powerful fruit firmly in the black fruit side of the spectrum, with less green than most vintages, just a light tobacco leafiness. You could almost talk yourself into thinking this might be a cab franc-heavy Right Bank Bordeaux. Lots of earthy structure to balance all the fruit, good acidity but without the tart twang of less ripe vintages. I'm surprised how young this showed, there was very little secondary development, and this still has many years to go.

  • A perfect pairing with roast chicken. I love how intense the aromatics are - this shows really well out of a big Burg glass. It's in that phase where the core of fruit is still very youthful and bright, but at the same time it's showing a lot of savoury/maturing leathery, earthy, and greener herbal/pine needle notes. There's a faint green olive-like note that emerges on the back end with some air, but the greenness never distracts from the fruit/other flavours here, and the whole package is absolutely fantastic. Still a touch of grainy tannin on the back end, but it's barely noticeable when having this with protein. Absolutely fantastic.

  • Promising cab franc aromas. But I think this is at least 5 years away from being ready to drink, maybe 10.

  • Lovely showing - not sure what could be hoped for that isn't here. Developing beautifully. Ripe tannins and fruit but on this night, dominated by graphite and gravel, but pretty nonetheless, and very long. Very well balanced, especially considering the warm year and the 13.5% alcohol. The wine comes across as complete, an articulate expression of this terroir, and also a wine of rich fruit and fine texture and structure, and a long fragrant finish. An excellent 05 and an excellent Chinon. Plenty of upside potential here too.

  • Very dark ruby red in color, a nose of fragrant underbrush and cassis, classis Cab Franc. Very bright on the palate, with good ripeness and saturation, this is really starting to drink beautifully. The Baudry from this year have always been good, but there is an additional grip and definition that has emerged with some bottle age. A great year for Chinon, whatever some said early on. I particularly like the way the bright ripe fruit is balanced by the signature leafy Cab Franc character.

  • Decanted for 2 hours. Ruby. Graphite and black olive. Riper fruit than in a normal year, although not nearly sweet. Excellent acid/tannin backbone, but more forthcoming than the last time I tried it. Superbly constituted wine.

  • decanted 45 min. dark red to garnet at rim; green olives, red berries, tobacco leaf, a bit of animal funk makes for a complex nose; med+ bodied; initially, clenched & recalcitrant, not showing much fruit, but w/air, a very pure red currant & wild blackberry profile dominated, very dark minerals, pencil lead, bramble leaf, grippy tannins, good acid, dusty scraping finish. core of this is terrific; hold 5 years, or much longer decant.

crispy spice-rubbed & pan-roasted chicken thighs w/mint pesto; roasted red creamer potatoes w/new garlic & roasted lemon; zucchini w/pea tendrils, cherry tomatoes & balsamic vinegar

  • Deep, almost opaque color. Very reminiscent of the aromatics I described 5 years ago when last tasted-graphite, a touch of herbs, flowers and wet stone. Light but remarkably powerful due to its sharply etched acids and fine grained but toothy tannins. Pure, lean blackberry fruit and a lingering vein of minerality. No concessions to ripeness or artificial sweetness. This is an absolutely fantastic example of Loire Cabernet France and should easily go on for another 10 to 15 years. The great pleasure it gives today is testament to its amazing balance.

Second night-Even smoother feel, more blackberry confit, bitter chocolate and green olive. Just brilliant.

  • I Like it now, nice bright ruby color , starting to get secondary flavours, nice structure, tannins milder

  • Still quite deep red. Lovely wine - quite powerful for a cab franc but not big nor clumsy. Some tobacco, earthy red fruits , herbal but absolutely no greeness more loire garrigue if there is such a thing. Powerfuly midpalate with excellent length with ripe tannins that are obvious but not at all rustic or coarse. Probably needs at least another 5 years to develop lovely secondary characters and will go another 5-10 years with ease.

87 pts

  • I didn't buy it as cheapas Steffen Pelz but I agree with much of his note...good ripe fruit, still somewhat tannic and that characteristic green tinge that I like but others might not.....this is reminescent as much of Bdx as chinon....should develop nicely for years to come

  • Popped and poured on 9/2. Lots of funk, earth and not too much fruit. Next day more of the same, but 4 days after being left on counter, wow very smooth, velvety medium bodied beaut. Cassis, green olives, black licorice and dirt on nose. Very smooth and delicious.

  • If this isn't one of the finest values in red wine, then I don't know what is. Purchased for $16, this delivers multiple times the pleasure. Although it shows the typical tannic black currant, green bell pepper, earth and violets flavors one expects from Chinon, the 2005 vintage influenced this wine in that it is fully ripe, velvety in its texture, and rounder than usual. If I had drunk this blind, I might have even guessed it to be a Bordeaux. Goes great with any kind of red meat dish, and anything grilled. Should be purchased by the case.

  • 90 on night one and 91 when I returned to this wine two nights later. I would recommend either waiting or decanting if you want to enjoy this wine at its peak.

  • Brilliant wine. Tobacco, forestal greenness, fresh earth and dark fruits combining seamlessly. There's still plenty of youthful fruit, extract, tannin and acid structure suggesting that this has plenty of time ahead, but after a little air it's quite wonderful to drink now.

  • Amazing wine. So fresh and alive. Just beginning to come out of its shell. Aromatically explosive with tons of dark cherry fruit and typical cab franc notes. The tannins are in the process of dropping out but this is still very dry. I wish I had purchased a case.

  • Popped on 3/2/10 and enjoyed, but a little tight. Vacu sealed and left on counter and left for Hawaii for a week. Popped tonight (3/15/10) before dumping in sink and wow, what a surprise. Beautiful medium bodied wine with earthy, fruity, smooth flavors. Nose was brilliant as well. This wine should hold up in cellar for at least 20 years.

  • Shut down! Nothing there and air only made it worse. I thought this would be more open than my last bottle. Not corked. Still has great potential. Wait at least another year or two. Enjoyed with bacon, mushroom, and barley stew.
Day 2: I put half in a 375 and corked it. Much improved the next day. Had taken on considerable weight, density, and character. More fruit, more minerality, rounder. Fine tannins, but very dry. Still, it kept disappearing with time in the glass. Give it another year, this should be fantastic. Enjoyed with a yuzu, rosemary and pork ragu over rigatoni.

  • There are times where you re-visit a wine and it just blows away any memory you had. This is one of those nights.
Upon pouring the Baudry, you are stunned by the elegance of the deep dark rich purple. It takes an hour to open up, but when it does... oh my. Dark fruits, - cherries, blackberries, currants - slight floral notes. Magnificent cab franc elements that are so well balanced for a wine that should go another 20 years. Frankly, I know I won't have any bottles left when they are supposed to be drunk. It is too good and too affordable to wait. What a happy night.
Drank it with a spiced pork loin. The cumin and cinnamon were pulled out brilliantly.

Savoureux

  • Decent nose of dark fruits. Dark fruits with a good amount of tannin and acidity that aren't overbearing. Medium body. No hint of greeness. Very pretty. Will try again in a couple years and hope that the fruit is still as evident and the tannins mellow some.

  • Maybe 88+. Better on day 2. Day 1, not showing much. Soft and smooth, but not much else. Day 2 showed a bit more character. May have been served a wee bit cold. Nice drink, but not much more. Maybe it needs time? Not much tannin or acid, so not sure what to think.

  • Popped and poured. Beautiful nose with espresso roast, black licorice and subtle dark fruit. Palate is more of the same with lots of garrigue, forest floor. Rustic style. Will try rest of bottle tonight.
Day 2 - Little more fruit on palate, but very similar to first day. Ridiculous bargain at $16 a while back.

  • ~1hr. decant at tasting; COLOR- dark, deep red center, lightening towards edges. NOSE- minerals, dusty blackberries, blueberry, and floral scents; not too intense, meaning it may want more decant time to open-up. With time, it sweetens, to show something like sweet, homemade butter-bread from Thanksgiving dinner. PALATE- At present, this is ultra-tannic and very closed down. A hint of rhubarb peaks up beneath the layers of tar, leather, and bitter rose-petal flavors. The finish is too abrupt at this stage, and shows mostly pencil shavings (minerality) and more leather. I sense this wine could have more stuffed behind the veil than it's letting on, but it's hard to bank on it with so little evidence. I'd recommend a good half-day decant on this wine before tasting it. I'll return to this later for final evaluation... After several additional hours in the decanter, this Chinon is finally opening-up some, and I must admit with a little more fruit and sweetness and little less harshness, I find it's complexities intriguing. Vegetable peppers and dark chocolate are obvious in the complex finish. This isn't the easiest wine to get along with, but it pays dividends to the patient enthusiast. This comes across as an 87-88 pts wine right now, but I'd bet it reaches up to 90-91 after several more years in the cellar.

  • Maybe 89+ would be better. Nice expressive nose, with dusty but bright fruit. LC liked it a lot, and I did too.. Hung on well for a couple of days tilI could finish. A Brad Coelho reco from eBob, and not a bad choice at all.

  • Color: Inky, glass staining purple
Nose: Pencil lead, dark fruit, earth, raspberry jam, cedar and flowers.
Palate: Vibrant, youthfull. Primary flavors of dark fruit, secondary flavors of tobacco, green pepper.

Outstanding. Bought some more to cellar.

  • After 6 hours open, a dusky, pungent nose of earth tones shot through with a nose of nice, wet red raspberry wrapped in citrus notes and a touch of menthol. Vanilla ice cream on the very edge? Palate has decadent (but not sticky) concentration, flavors of ripe, wet cabernet franc. Tar, apple skin, high toned red cranberry/raspberry fruit, and a funky cedar twinge at the very end.

  • It is pretty grapey and primary right now, but with air the blackberry leaf and tobacco show up. Great full ripe tannins makes me think this will age well.
I might pick up a few more bottles for the cellar, lots of potential here.

  • gorgeous wine. incredibly young with astringency to the tannins, and very tight in every way, but the ripeness and beauty of the fruit is obvious. there are earth and tobacco tones too. after two hours the wine opens up a bit, but still has so much to reveal. had i been smart enough to buy more of this, i would hold it for 15-20 years because it's going to be a real beauty.

  • Great Chinon. Leanish compared to bordeaux right bank wines as this has no merlot. However, excellent ripeness for a Chinon. (13.5%) Solid fruit and and great balance. Superb food wine. Some strong tanins at first opening but they smooth out with some air (1 hr). Could age a few years and still get better. One of the better Chinons I have had and I very much like his style of elegance and balance compared to other producers such as Joguet. A definite rebuy from K&L at $18.00.

  • Another '05 Loire, another gorgeous, pure purple color. What a delight the nose is! It features a complicated mix of camphor, pine needles, pencil sharpener grindings, blackberry, and some unidentified dark flower. Typical light to medium weight Chinon with lean, focused, rocky, very tannic flavors that have more intensity and persistence than the weight would suggest, but this is very backward because of its drying tannins. Only at the very end of the bottle does one get a glimpse of some sweet cassis fruit. I really liked this for its accurate rendition of the appellation and its pleasing youthful austerity (not to mention the price)-no concessions to the ripeness or size of the vintage here. It will always be lean, but I think it has enough underlying material to avoid being mean. Look elsewhere if you are seeking a fleshy, fruity red.

  • I lost my notes on this wine, but iit was really nice. Easy to drink now, but I would think that it should gain some complexity with some age. Slight dry green peppers on the nose, but the flavors were like a berry flavored cigar (in a good way).

  • Popped and poured and aired in the glass for a little while. Dark opaque garnet to purple color. Painfully young right now, but what great potential. Nose is steeped in blackberry, black currant, and tons of tobacco and pencil shavings. Stern structure, but really nice sweet fruit paired with a salty dryness and some sous-bois. Lovely wine that has many, many years to go until maturity. Went tremendously well with NY Strip Steak tonight and roasted beets. Can be had for $15.99 at the Wine Exchange right now, and a laughable tariff for a wine of this quality.

  • Note is for 2nd day after opening. Beautiful nose of cherry pit, brown tobacco, powdered rocks. Full bodied, with flavors of salt plum, cherry, with a fine streak of salty minerals. Well structured with beautifully ripe tannins that i did not find rustic at all. Gorgeous juice.

  • This wine was a very attractive dark gleaming purple in the glass. It is big, balanced and has all the goods coveted by your typical Loire geek. Blackberries, dark raspberries, my favorite high capsicum notes, lovely chalky minerals and a funky soil/ dirt thing grace this wine from the nose through the finish. Excellent.

  • Fuller than usual and very dark, this nevertheless holds onto a cool-climate profile. It has the herbal thing that keeps the wines absurdly affordable for the quality and good acidity holding everything in place. The heart of it is a bruiser, with black fruits, graphite, and quite a bit of rustic tannin. I have a feeling this may shut down hard.
