Quite the nice surprise. Wonder if Napa cabs were just built different back then. A bit stewed in the beginning - like plum. Got a lot better after an hour of air. Plenty of primary red fruit still, crisp cherry with good structure to support. Plenty of acidity here as well. Not sure if it’ll get better much much, but should be enjoyable

Our last bottle from our first futures buy, 23 years ago. Clearly presents as an old wine with fading tannins. But the initial flavors from our original barrel tasting still shine through; cherry, licorice, and dark chocolate. But there is now a nuance of pear and plum appearing on the finish, and nasturtium. All in all, one of the most memorable wine buys, and experiences, of our wine journey.

1 of 6 from OWC, nose of floral hints, nice tannins and nose does not have a lot of age. Taste of standard valley floor Napa. Fills the mouth earthy notes and solid tannins on the back of the palate. Enjoy for the next 5-10 years

A good bottle. On opening, a little thin and acidic. After about two hours morphed into a nuanced full-bodied cab with purple and dark red fruit. Better than average finish. Seems to be some variability between bottles.

This 20 year old reserve cabernet is still well structured and engaging. The vibrant cherry notes we tasted in the barrel are muted but still present, along with pepper, fig, and cedar.

Charmed bottle or the wine just needed a few more years? This one was much better than the prior few. Never been a case of poor provenance, but this bottle was much more evolved, with a bigger, fruitier nose, longer finish, more complex palate and better mouthfeel. Punching well above it's weight class.

Can't score it as this was the third bottle of the night. Probably past it's prime. A relatively light wine with undistinguished fruit. Would have liked to try maybe 10 years ago. This was lost in the cellar....

Blood red. No sediment to speak of. Loamy nose, cedar, ripe plums, bittersweet chocolate. First notes follow the nose, but after some time in the glass, fruits emerged -- red, ripe, but not sweet. Cedar, toast and earth stayed around and completed the finish.

decanted for 2 hours. Tannins have softened so much but structure and fruit aren't present as much as needed. Not bad but clearly past its prime and fading. I hope last bottle will prove me wrong, but not optimistic

Showing its age with some loss of structure but the flavors are concentrating. The cherry that originally impressed in a barrel tasting (15 years ago!) is now intense with berry and fig on the rise.

Deep crimson, no brown rim. Decanted -- minimal sediment in the bottle, but needed the decanting. Both bottles had a consistent first taste and nose. cedar and leather with some mint emerging on the later glasses. A bit of plum and nectarine and loam. First notes were currants and blackberries with plums and leather. Still excellent structure and acids, that turned floral and delicate as the wine opened.

I hope the wine is still evolving. The fruit still tastes fresh, but the complexity and finish is lacking. We drank it side by side with an '82 Bordeaux and it was like comparing Moby Dick to Goodnight Moon. I didn't get a lot of tannin so maybe this is as good as it gets. Not a bad wine but not memorable.

Tasted over 3 hrs. (first without food and then with a meal of gas BBQ'd top sirloin marinaded w/harissa sauce, herbed rice and salad of baby greens/olive oil vinaigrette) in a blind against a 2000 Sineann Block One, an Andrew Will Sorella 2000, a 1997 Sterling RSV cab, a 1999 Girard Red and a 1999 Dunham V.
All were surprisingly good with the Apex tasting the most Bordeaux like; dry with hints of cedar, cassis, blackberry and a touch of scorched earth and a fairly long finish. The Sineann was the biggest, ripest and fattest of the group with a rich thick mouth feel, scents of super ripe Italian plums and blackberry jam and lottsa sweet tannins that had fully resolved. The Sorella was much more elegant in its lengthy finish and finesse and went well w/the dinner. The '97 Sterling RSV was another surprise since some of the '97's we've had in the recent past were tiring out and this still had much of its fruit intact and was well liked by all, classic Napa cab. The '99 Girard Red had great mouth feel, black cherry/cassis w/vanilla overtones and a medium finish...tasty on its own and good with the food. Finally, the '99 Dunham V showed its stuff as well: rich blackberry/cassis with well integrated but noticable oak. Nice to know that WA juice can age well if stored well, as all of the above had been. Despite any protestations as to which was best the four of us had no trouble finishing the lot, save for a little of the Sineann, which I took home and polished off the next day.

Absolutely beautiful. Deep garnet color with moderate sediment, significant rim variation. No flaws. Low earth intensity. Retained fruit aromas of cherry, strawberry, plum. Low alcohol, sugar, and tannin. Very smooth, long finish. So glad we waited until now to enjoy, and so sorry it's our last.

Winter Wine / Dinner Party: Opened wines about 2 hours before serving. Did not decant. 4 bordeaux varietals were served blind.
Aromatics of cream, cassis, dark cherry and some wood. Later in the evening, also picked up some caramel on the nose. Flavors included cassis, spices, leather with a touch of tartness that i enjoyed. Nice long finish. Wine was the 2nd favorite of the group, depending on the weighting of places (Gruaud actually had twice the first place votes, but also had more last place votes). Wine had 2 First place votes, 4 seconds, 3 3rds and 2 fourth place votes.

This Cabernet Sauvignon extremely dark red wine on the pour. The nose is a mineral, black fruit, plum, citrus, and leather. The taste show a wine full of structure with an unusual quick fruit that ends a little flat. The finish is tart and long with good tannin flavor that is tangy in the mouth. This wine needs to be matched with a food that will bring the tart tannin into play.

Decanted for over an hour and the wine opened up nicely. Dark garnet color, very little tannin. Tastes pretty earthy up front. Oaky, maybe some tobacco. reminds me of old vine bordeaux. Had with dinner for our 5 year anniversary. Talk about a bottle of wine with a lot of time left. Decanted, lots of fine graned sediment. Deep purple core with no age showing on this wine. Lively dark fruit flavors. Nose was a bit closed. Came back to the wine three hours later and it was still young and fresh. Based on current condition, I would say that this bottle will drink well for another ten years.

Light to medium brick red on the edge. Drank more like an older Bordeaux. Took about an hour after decanting to open up. Upon opening, we thought the bottle was over the hill. Thus, we opend a bottle of something else, drank it and then came back to check on the Sterling. It had improved dramatically with the time in the decanter. Smells of leather and spice. Long finish, light berry taste.
