My last note seems to get it. This comes off as a lower tier Zin for Ridge. It's worthy of a more basic pricing as it really struggles to show much individual character. Well...its more blackberry than a lot of Zins. Which is a bit interesting. There is some brambly stuff if you really lean in. Again, probably more classically food friendly than a lot of Zins are. Its just not really capturing my interest.

Very solid Ridge ATP offering. Dark purple coloration, with nicely blended red fruit notes abounding, a touch of earthiness, mild tannins. Drinking nicely now, and will likely improve with a bit more time in the bottle.

Traditionally-styled Ridge zin made with 94% Zinfandel, 4% Petite Sirah and 2% Alicante Bouschet. Medium-bodied with mellowed aromas of red currants, blackberry, orange rind, violets and savory herb. The palate is delicate yet savory with notes of red fruits, clove and licorice. Tannins are not overpowering, balanced nicely with mild acidity on the finish. Considerably improved from my first bottle 6+ months ago.

There is a somewhat green character to the fruit here. The tannin is a bit astringent as well. This wine seems in contrast to many of the other 2018's from California. It's just not as generous and forward. It actually feels like they picked a bit earlier than they probably should have. Hold up: 14.8%. Even so, what you get is a nice, classically balanced wine. Probably more dinner friendly than many wines with its somewhat lean, more structured character. That also means this doesn't have a lot of character. Olney's recommended drinking window being pretty short could be an indication of the above.

After picking up an order and doing a tasting at Bedrock, this felt appropriate to pop this young bottle open with dinner and try out.
Completely closed up on the PnP. Decanted for at least 3 hours before tasting. Medium dark purple. Cherries, blackberries, currants, and dusty cedar on the nose. Medium light bodied with balanced medium acidity. Lots of extraction, yet a soft primary palate - Bramble, cherry, plums. Even with this long decant time, intense chewy tannins. Long finish of black tea, saline, gravel, and a bit of cocoa.
2018 produced some powerful wines and this is no exception. Feels like a completely different wine from the 2017 vintage. Needs time in the cellar to evolve like nearly every other quality 2018 Sonoma and Napa wine I have tasted. I suspect I will rate this one higher in the future.
