A bit rustic. Very dark and tarry. Still some tannins but almost mature now. Needs 30 min to open up. High quality for a Barbera. Fresh acidity. Overall a big dark wine for steak or grill.

I'm sure I first tasted this at a trade tasting (i.e. I don't remember buying it, but I guess I liked it enough on release), why else would it be in my cellar (read: my friends don't give tasteful gifts, jk!). In any event, it's been too long ago to remember exactly what I first saw in this wine, in this vintage (that at the time no one was talking about), and that thing is purity, perfectly knitted with ribbons of elegance. In the end, it was hard to decide between smelling it all night, or actually drinking it. Some hours later I did not have any such decisions. This was a joy, and seems to still be inside its window; probably best to consume now. recommended
Aerated in decanter for 90 minutes, served at cellar temp, non-blind. Cork and fill in great shape.

An evening of wines from Trentino/Alto Adige (University Circle): A few months back, this group did a Barbera tasting and we discussed how well they might age. I bought this wine since then to check it out. It seemed as good a time as any to drink it. Ruby in color. The nose has dark cherries and black raspberries along with a nice earthy funk. Maybe a bot of damp forest floor. On the palate, this is juicy with nice black raspberries and dark cherries. It is still fresh and alive. But, at ten is it giving me anything that it didn't give me at 5? I don't think so. An outstanding wine, but I am not sure it gets much better after five or so years. It certainly held just fine though. YMMV.

2005 Giacomo Conterno Barnera d' Alba Casina Erancia - Serralunga d'Alba
Decantet. First glas right away.
Deep dark red color, towards black in senter. Clear and clean.
Nose aromas show dark berries, smoke and tart. Cherries. Vanilla? Wood and smoke from the fireplace. Ashtray. Dark spices.
Stunning smooth on the palet, rounded and full bodied. Beef, tart and smoth integrated tannins. This wine is mouthwatering. It wonderfully well balanced and has loads of layeras. Komplex and ritch in tast. Long.
After 3-4 hours this shows a great open sweetnes, with ripe fruits and berries. Over all ripe cherries and dark spices.

The nose was autumnal, showing dried leaves and cherry, sweet spice and hints of citrus peel. On the palate, dried red fruits with a bitter twang, licorice and mineral soil tones swirled around the senses in a mouthwatering, slightly angular yet truly refined expression of Barbera. The finish was long and palate-staining with red berry, yet truly fresh. This was my last of six bottles, and I must say that I’ve enjoyed the development of this wine more than almost any other—drink up!

Riesling Show (Count's Mannor): Ripe cherry, rich, touch of vanilla, middle is full of sweet macerated cherry. touch of grape skins on the finish. This is my first taste of a well aged Conterno Barbera...and i must say its amazingly good. Cherry dominates overall but the balance and acidity keep this wine fresh. great stuff!

Black cherry color. On the nose: Raspberries, cherries, a little vanilla custard/creme brûlée with orange rind in the background. Dark fruits (blackberries, ripe blueberries) dominate the impression on the palate followed by italian coffee (with the requisite lemon twist) and tree bark with a hint of bitter chocolate. This wine corrects any generalization that Barbera D'Alba is a light wine or that it does not age well. Very nice mouth feel and great balance. Nice layering of sweet and and bitter. Outstanding value and has many years left. Note: after making the above notes I dug into a grilled bone-in ribeye. With the aid of fat the initial sweetness and mid-palate orange rind bitterness were amplified - great interplay.

I bought a lot of this in 04 and 05. Some of the 05's have been better than others, and this was a really nice bottle. Deep, dark ruby. Good acidity, black cherries, blackberries, dark plums, earth/minerals, just a nice bottle. Only a couple left.

Tasted non blind with dinner. Opened and served immediately. Followed over two hours.
Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of berries, flowers, plums and a hint of black cherries. Maybe light notes of white pepper. Flavors of berries, cherries and raspberries. Tangy acidity, medium body. Drink now, maybe over the next year or two. This bottle was a bit more tasty and showed better than the last bottle.

Garnet color in the glass, little cloudy looking throughout. Nose of flowers, berries and cherries. Flavors of tart berries, raspberries and cherries. Racy acidity, medium tannin, medium body. Drink now. The acidity is fully exposed at this point and there is little fruit to counter.

This bottle came across much more integrated than the previous one, but it remains in my opinion a little unbalanced, still enjoyable, but not quite the quality I would expect from this wine, perhaps the vintage . . .

More evidence that these should be opened and enjoyed young for the purity of fruit, rather than aging. This one had a fresh smell, but it was odd and never really opened up. Sag Harbor weekend with the Edgemont guys.

Sadly, this bottle was not as good as prior bottles, and I think I waited too long. The fruit is dimmer than in the past, less precise, and lacks freshness. It's not a tired wine, it doesn't taste old, it's just not as interesting and certainly not as pretty as it once was. Did not degrade nor oxidize overnight, but did not improve, either. Note to self: the 09 Conterno Barbera Cerretta that I bought last week, don't age it as long.

Dark purple. Red fruits and plum on the nose. Fruit and alcohol starting to subside compared to last bottle tried 2 years ago. Still somewhat big for a Barbera. Sour cherry, earth, lead pencil and minerals on a balanced palate. Beautiful acidity. A nice food wine that went well with a variety of dishes with tomato based sauces.

"Lovely, as usual. Plenty of berry, cherry and dark plum fruit, with impressive purity and clarity, underlined by terrific, bright acidity . . . Since my last bottle (in February, 09) this wine has condensed somewhat and is less lush." I wrote these words in October 2009, and the wine is virtually identical today, except it may have condensed a bit more. The "sweet meat note" I also cited is still present, although less so. I can't think of any other Barbera I'd rather drink.

The acidity is very strong willed and I waited, on its terms, for it to decide when it wanted to be drunk. Even then it was a very firm if exotically scented Barbera, all cedar and huckleberry laced with meatiness and spice, and the tannins delivered a swift slap to the cheeks. Concentrated, yet almost weightless. Very fresh and pure, and really needed quite a bit more time. Given its tannins I thought this would go well with steak but frankly the fruit was too bright - pasta bolognese, maybe?

Fantastic. a wine I've followed since tasting from barrel, and this has been singularly focused, intense stuff right from the beginning, with a lovely core of ripe sour cherry, luscious, mouth-watering acidity, and a bright, lift to the deep bouquet of earthy, floral aromatics.

Lovely, as usual. Plenty of berry, cherry and dark plum fruit, with impressive purity and clarity, underlined by terrific, bright acidity. There is an inner core that I can only describe as "sweet meat". Since my last bottle (in February, 09, when I hosted my monthly wine group with a Piedmont theme), this wine has condensed somewhat and is less lush. No degradation over three nights of being opened. Adding more and more of these to my cellar at $25 was a good move. Roberto Conterno makes the best Barbera I have tasted. ADDENDUM: I am sipping the last of this wine some five nights after it's been opened - - no degradation in terms of oxidation; only in texture, which seems soup-y. But the berry and plum palate still shows brightness and sweet fruit. Impressive fortitude here.

Wino Guys Weekend (WGW) #3; 9/11/2009-9/12/2009: Opaque purple colour. Aromas of blackberry, cocoa (odd since there is no barrique at all in the winery), black cherry and licorice. Medium-full bodied, beautiful acidity that is almost crunchy, showing peach, blackberry, and sliced black plum notes. Moderate-long finish, ~40s, with dark fruit. Awesome stuff! Amazing match with vitello tonnato and bagna cauda. Cellar more to allow for tertiary notes to develop. Drink over the next 5-8 years.

Wine Guy Weekend Chez Doktas Take 3; 9/11/2009-9/13/2009 (Collingwood, Ontario): The nose was a little brooding with some cherry and cedar notes and the palate has a lot of acidity. Did not take detailed notes as Barbera D'Alba are not my favourite kinds of Italian wines. I would much prefer a nice nebbiolo. Decent quaffer.

I was shocked at how huge this was. Super dark, rich purple-black fruit, torrefactive aromas, lots of super ripe licorice aromas. Very concentrated and a bit spirity with alcohol. Just too big and brooding, with no real finesse here, at least yet. Perhaps it just needs time; it's certainly not my thing today. A real disappointment considering how much I love the nebbiolo from this house.

What a nice, easy to drink, yet reasonably intellectual wine. Decent acidity, low tannin, prominent yet not overdone fruit, a floral component, a simple, yet telling example of why we drink wine. Could have scores of these, open when not needing something earth shattering, but just want something darn good, that speaks of a place and a varietal.

Piedmont Night at Asher's Place (The Netherworld of the Upper East Side of Manhattan): An excellent wine, the best example of Barbera that I've ever had. Reminded me of a great Beaujolais in the way there is energy, density of fruit and mineral soil, and yet a fresh brightness, a light almost weightlessness in the mouth. So drinkable, and complex with soil and mineral. Fantastic.

Very pure expression of barbera. Color is almost purple. Lots of dark fruit in the nose. Licorice and smoke reveals itself in the glass. It still appears on the (very) young side, and I will see if I can leave my remaining bottles in cellar for at least 4-5 years - it will be hard to keep my fingers away. I think the 2006's will be ready before the 2005's.

Ruby color w a faint black cast and very little rim variation.
1 hour decant
On the nose the fruit meets the earth. What a primal and but majestic nose, free run cherry-rasp juice, tar, crushed purple flowers, a custard like sweetness in the bkgrnd. I think of rich fertile soil when I smell this. Soft but fresh on palate with a pure blackberry compote that layers imediately to tertiary complexity of fall leaves, loam, faint hints of saddle leather and finally returning with a beautiful sweet but also tart cherry finish...the purity of the fruit is allowed to speak here and I'm so excited about that. This wine is all encompassing in the mouth, and oh so long, low + tannin, med + acid, med concentration, med - alcohol.....93pts
and I will add after reading galloni's review just now, in which he noted what this wine turns to in a few hrs, he is dead on bc when i stuck my nose in the glass after a 3 hr break the wine had totally changed, alot more depth and rusticity moving away from the femine aspects of the wine earlier. lots of smoke, tar, minerals and dark fruits on the nose and palate with a few hrs open , almost got some northern rhone-hermitage esque elements in this wine
best barbera i have ever had.

A nice wine. Somewhat big for a Barbera at the moment. Would wait a year to try next one. Nice fruity nose of black cherry and earth. Dark purple plum in color. Big flavor of black cherry, earth and lead pencil on the palate. A hint of tannin. Some time needed to soften it a bit. Well made.

4th Annual Italian Offline (Campagnola, Chicago, USA): Medium-dark ruby/burgundy colour. Huge aromas of crushed red currants, blackberries, and raspberries. Full-bodied, very juicy, but still shows great structure. Replays from nose on the palate that are joined by stones/minerals. Very layered, and has that fantastic acidity one expects from Barbera. Everything is in check and balanced here. Long finish, seamless from the nose and palate. Awesome stuff! Will drink well for the next 5 years easily.

much more closed down then the last bottle. I will not open another for at least 3 years... maybe 5. At about an hour, some sappy pine bark appears, acids calm down a smooth tannins start to peek through. There was much less detectable fruit at any point of drinking this bottle. Great stuff, its just superb Barbera... now in need of cellar time.

This was consumed as a 'pop and pour'. Initially very unimpressive, but after about 1 hour in a decanter it had changed nicely to reveal a very good wine.
Sight: Medium red color, slightly cloudy Smell: Initially some mushroom notes; Red fruits coming forward after aeration; Some hints of Cherry and Red Plums; Slight chemical pungency; Granny smith apples Taste: Initially: Quince; Light body wine; hollow mid-palate; heat on the finish. After aeration: Increased fruit notes - especially on the mid palate along with an introduction of wood but heat was still there but softened after 15 mins in glass Overall: A great everyday drinker, I can imagine it with Pizza 86 points

An intense and very youthful nose of soil, mineral, plumskin, and cigar ash. Focused and taut in the mouth with wonderfully ripe acidity and great minerality all balanced against the slightly astringent plummy fruit. Turns darker fruited with airing revealing a core of blackberry fruit. The finish is very long with a touch af malo butteriness still. Delicious now but with all the ingredients for a long healthy life. 2008-2018

Could have scores of these, open when not needing something earth shattering, but just want something darn good, that speaks of a place and a varietal.

This was consumed as a 'pop and pour'. Initially very unimpressive, but after about 1 hour in a decanter it had changed nicely to reveal a very good wine.
Sight: Medium red color, slightly cloudy
Smell: Initially some mushroom notes; Red fruits coming forward after aeration; Some hints of Cherry and Red Plums; Slight chemical pungency; Granny smith apples
Taste: Initially: Quince; Light body wine; hollow mid-palate; heat on the finish. After aeration: Increased fruit notes - especially on the mid palate along with an introduction of wood but heat was still there but softened after 15 mins in glass
Overall: A great everyday drinker, I can imagine it with Pizza 86 points
