Good cork, strong ruby color without significant ambering at the rim. This is tired. A little lift from VA at first, then raspberries and dried black figs. Some chestnutty oxidative notes. Maybe some gamyness but it's not in focus. The palate is coming apart - there's a short moment of fruit sweetness at first, then the acidity pokes out. Drink now.

Very southern Rhone. Tobacco, garrigue, a bit of sour cherry fruit. A bit short on the finish and the acidity is a bit hard/biting. I think this wine is on the fade, a bit more vibrancy would have helped that bite. Still nice, but drink up

Why did I open it today? Two reasons. I drank a 2005 vintage a few months ago and gave it was excellent, great and unique. That's why I wanted to check how different 2001 is. The second reason is that a few weeks ago I drank 2000 Domain de Vieux Lazaret ChdP and was a bit disappointed, so I wanted to see if the age of the wine matters here.
Yes this wine is definitely different then 05, but the same time much better then 00 from Lazaret. The answer is obvious. Age matters Producer matters This La Nerthe is still delicious, but not unique like 05. I would say it's classic like many other good ChdP wines. It has lovely smell of wet forest, tobacco, minerals, red fruits, but nothing else. Taste has lovely flavors of red cherry mixed with milk chocolate and minerals, but nothing else. Soft tannins and acidity of course. Way too short finish with spice and chocolate ( nice!).

This was a pop and pour, and I got to watch it develop for about an hour. Dark garnet and clear. There's a bit of a hard edge to the menthol and game inflected black fruit which never really goes away. This is only about 1/2 Grenache, and it shows - it's firm and rugged (though not as rugged as the 05 Cadettes from a week ago). Needs a couple of hours in a decanter or 5-7 more years, but I'm unsure if the Grenache will ever sweeten up the wine.

Out of six bottles of Nerthe 1999, 2000, 2001 which were outstanding, this bottle was bad. The brownish color was a clue and I hoped it would turn into something after an hour, it got worse. C'est la vie mes amis.

There are plenty of notes on this wine already so I will just add that the second day after opening this Nerthe it had blossomed into a very smooth, fruit-forward red jam, delight. More pronounced than 2000 and 1999 but not quite as structured.

Kinda plain, nothing to really write about. Something to quaff, admire the lite narcotic effect of the alcohol and watch a movie. Had open for three night. Some honey elements come out. *Perhaps needs more time. *7th night and finishing bottle. Best night drinking better…a lot better, Wow, nice cassis, and had to rescore. Honey element gone. Just pleasant fruit and some age. Keep on sipping on this wine…it’s gotten really good. Need to really let this bottle sit or drink it down the years ahead. Not bad. Surprises. Week in the bottle at ambient room temp and above. Great bottle.

Clearly in the more modern mold, this has been one polished and slick wine in its youth, but now in its senior years, this shows tertiary notes and more of a sense of place. Garrigue, especially lavender, dark cheery fruit and spices in a well structured, upright frame. No need to keep any further from here.

Première bouteille :Bouchonnée!! Acheté d'un particulier à environ 50$ l'an dernier.

Starting to be lighter in colour and brownish, this CdP is now very developped and needs to be drunk up. Nose and palate dominated by plum. Finish is still ok with a bit of pepper and slightly in the sweet side. I like it very much, but one needs to like this tertiary/plummy taste.

Tasted blind. Dark garnet color turning crimson rust at the rim with a wide transparent edge. The nose is unmistakably Old World - rustic, earthy and peppery. The palate is very elegant- medium-bodied, brightly acidic with notes of blackberry, black olives, balsamic soy. It has a long, smoky finish with dusty tannins and a hint of pepper spice. Drink now until 2031.

Simply wonderfull (with Boeuf Bourguignon). In the glass light purple with a brownish edge. Strong nose. On the palate the wine is very smooth, balanced with very fine tannins. Quite some tertiary aromas. Fully mature, drink in the coming years.

Probably held onto this one a couple of years too long. Tart red cherry and plum fruit with earth and spice. Unfortunately, the fruit doesn't last and ends up with a very short finish. Bummer.

This wine significantly exceeded my expectations. We bought it at the winery and brought it back in the era before liquids-on-planes restrictions. Nicely balanced, medium-bodied, a little lighter on the entry and bigger on the back of the palate, slightly dry finish, drinking well and paired well with short ribs.

Sometimes you get to sit down with good friends, have good conversation, and open up an unexpectedly great wine. This was just such an occasion. This wine was as close to perfection as I can remember having. It have everything working, fruit, acid, tannin, spices, barrique. It came together so well that it is difficult to describe in multiple phrases. I was consumed by the nose, the palate on entry, the mid-palate, and the close. I wish every wine experience could be like this one.

2 bottles. First was medium weight, light, and frankly underweight for 01 CNP. Pleasant but underwhelming for what it should be. Score might struggle to get to 88 or so. 2nd was different - much brighter raw fruit, violets and lots of peppery CNP garrigue - in fact just what you'd expect. I'd say this one would be 89 maybe 90... This has lots of life left whereas the first bottle is going nowhere.

Pleasant enough CNP nose, but like the colour lacks depth and concentration. Not a patch on Beaucastel or Telegraphe or even FOnsalette. soft, ripe, garriguey fruit but very ready for drinking and for CNP just lacks body.

Waited three and a half years between bottles and the wait was worth it. Color has softened to a clear ruby, and the nose is less floral, moving more toward cherries and pepper. Very pleasant on the palate, with balanced acidity and tannins largely resolved. Plums, raspberries, cherries and pepper on the palate. Solid finish that makes you want to grab another sip right away. I've got one more bottle and I plan to hold it out another year or two, but it's not a mistake to drink this one now.

Drank along with 2001 Cadettes, sweet black cherry and raspberry, a lot of floral notes (lilac, rose) and delicate spices. Shorter and hotter on the finish than Cadettes. More evolution and very Burgundy like. Ready to drink.

A reminder of how wine can be such a fickle lover. I haven't seen a 180 like this in years. Aerate to decanter, vigorous swirl and let sit 15 min. Bouquet is a ruddy ruby with some black hues, medium body. Initial bouquet is virtually nonexistent, with a few dark sweetish berries and chocolate. On the palate, there is barely any fruit to speak of, with some plummy grapey flavors and some chocolate, a little licorice, a few herbs. Rather light in depth, very smooth, low acid, some fine integrated tannins lending some structure on the back end, and a modest unexciting finish. Overall, seriously underwhelming (80) and I've had $10-12 CdR's that deliver more thunder. After about 2.5 hours, this improved dramatically, with classic kirsch, garrigue, and mineral aromas and flavors, all with more depth and a longer finish (90). Overall, a very good pairing with Easter rack of lamb, but showed best long after dinner in the last few slurps at the 4 hr mark. Score is average.

Has sweet red fruit with hints of vanilla on the nose, leading to a medium-fleshy palate of typical grenache fruit, with noticeable but not unpleasant bitter flavors. Doesn't stand out among its CdP peers, but enjoyable, especially with appropriate cuisine.

Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking. First whiff on the nose and I got a faint aroma or TCA. However, I never got it thereafter. Nobody else in the room could picked up on the aroma although one said they got it on the palate ever so slightly. Once I got past that first whiff it was showing some aromas of berries and cherries. No sign of TCA on the palate with flavors of berries, cherries and a hint of licorice. Medium to bright acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Drink now with some air or continue to hold. No rating because of the potential TCA issue.

Tasted at TX Offline and then over the next two days. These notes are from day 3. Plums and figs on the nose with notes of dark berries, cherries, menthol, casis, saddle leather, garrique. At times almost Amarone like. Strong legs dark purple color. Full body, Soft integrated tannins with spice and dark chocolate and cherries on the palate. Somewhat dry spicy finish. Excellent wine. Went exceptionally well with BBQ Baby Back Ribs (dry rubbed) smoked with mesquite and hickory wood chips soaked in Bourbon.

I don't buy much wine from this Chateau, but this wine is a real beauty. The cepage is ~50% Grenache, ~30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre, Cinsault and other stuff. The Syrah is really showing through here, giving the wine a nice, well contained frame of dark, restrained fruit. Baked plum and fig come to mind along with polished red fruit. The wine has a nice spicy character, subtle lavender and garrigue and at age 9 still comes across as young. I think this wine was raised in 1/3 new or young oak, but the oak is fully absorbed and does not show through at all. I'm usually not a fan of 'modern' Chateauneufs, but this is a great wine and I wish I owned more of it.

Excellent wine at the right point on the aging curve. Dark full cherries, herbs, mushrooms and meatiness. A bit of saddle leather, but just a bit, as an age indicator. I do not know if this would be called traditional or modern when young, but it does not now have the fruit forward flavors of what people call the modern style. The balance is excellent at this stage. At first, my wife thought the color showed a bit brown, but it was the light. It's a dark burgundy, red but not black. I opened this with a boned roast chicken stuffed with ground veal, ground pork, mushrooms, onions and herbs. Went very well with it. I bought this about 6 years ago. Another example that patience pays off.

Popped and poured, slightly chilled (as I like my CNdP). This bottle was no way in decline as previous notes stated. Fruit was still very lively and very concentrated. Tannins have softened up allright. So I would say, at it's peak but with some years in it. (current CT window looks right on)

Wine is starting to look a little dull and clear colour at the edge. Nose has a hint of VA and other wise faded red fruit. The palate confirms.... this is a pleasant drink now but is well into its decline. The bottles drunk a few years ago were very very good.

Decanted 1/2 an hour. Medium ruby core, wide pale garnet rim. Subdued nose at first. Some spicy red fruit begins to emerge, also some nice perfume, but unfortunately just a note of cork taint too, which I suspect is surpressing the other aromatics rather than being overly off-putting in its own right. Medium full bodied on the palate, plenty of depth and density apparent on the mid-palate, with spicy red fruit, occasional slight notes of taint again and quite well balanced with medium acidity, integrated tannins providing some grip on a long finish. Obvious potential here evident despite the cork taint.

Decanted half the bottle about 1/2 hour. Left the rest in the bottle. Poured a taster right upon opening. Typical CdP floral nose. Opaque garnet color. Smooth right out of bottle, low tannins, mild acidity, wonderful plums and red fruits right out of bottle, which mellowed and added a spice and earthiness upon decanting. Medium bodied, usual silky CdP mouthfeel. Nice finish. Drank with grilled filet mignon. Just a wonderful bottle of wine. This has some years left in it, and I would expect it to get even better. Only downside: last glass, at about 3 hour mark, had pretty much petered out, with just weak fruits and a more sour taste. So, if you open, decant a bit then drink within first couple of hours. Note to all those California Rhone-style red makers: this sports 13.5% alcohol; please try this, as opposed to more than 15%. Iit makes for a more pleasing wine!

Still youthful looking, muted nose of cherries, pepper and earth. Decent levels of concentration, a bit of kirsch and some young peppery chateauneuf fruit. Good balance, backbone and tannins - typical long-haul 2001 that is approachable now. Will see out 20 years easily. The fruit is a little dry on the finish. Quite correct, if a little unexciting.

Roediger Tasting - Southern Rhone to the Costrieres de Nimes (Stellenbosch): 13.5% alc; Grenache-led with Syrah, Cinsault, Muscardin, Counoise. Medium garnet to dark cherry in colour, the wine has a reticent nose with elements of iodine, mineral, violets and black fruits but all very sotto voce. An elegant wine that is more full than the medium body I expected offers ripe blackberry, wood smoke and black plum. It feels fresh and clean with a long finish. It got better in glass; this is still unwinding and will take a few more years to completely unfold.

Enjoyed this bottle at a friend's home with a Christmas dinner of beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, green beans and baked pears. Dark, yet clear and crisp deep plum color. Confusing nose, with a little bite, herbs maybe? Went down smooth with light texture and balanced tanins. Nice mouth feel. I agree, the wine did seem slightly tight, but very enjoyable with the dinner. Only my second CdP ever.

New Orleans Wine and Food Expo 2006; 5/24/2006-5/29/2006 (New Orleans, LA -- Hilton Riverwalk Hotel): Not particularly my favorite style of CdP, but not bad nevertheless. Sweet subtle nose of bright sugared cherries, raspberry, warm oak, and a pronounced aroma of charcoal and oak. Jen and the other women at the table ( one of whom was a wealthy Duchess from Britain ) particularly enjoyed this wine. To me, there seems to be a hole in the midpalate which is bound on both sides by that smoky charcoal flavor and lacking in fruit. It did have an excellent texture. Smooth as fine linen and full of abundant berry when it first hits your tongue and then on the meduim length finish. The tannins were sweet and supple which also added a bit of enjoyment, and it matched very well with it culinary counterpart, but it was not my favorite of the evening.

Tokyo Offline Group Inaugural (French Mixed Bag) (Cuisine 219): Clear deep red, lighter than the Clos des Papes, but not as much as I would have expected. Nose starts with GSM-ish spice. Would have guessed Australia blind based on initial nose. With time, get some leather and dust, along with the slightly iodine/seaweed nose I often get in CdP (but others never do). Palate shows mostly red fruit, very nice acid/tannin balance that makes it very clear this is, indeed, French. Starting to shut down, I think, though my palate is pretty tired at this point. Once the GSM sweetness blows off, this is a nice contrast with the Clos des Papes. Clearly a lesser wine in size and concentration, but much more what I look for from CdP to drink with food. (Thanks chokkon)

Medium ruby red. Nice nose of slightly roasted grenache, plus an attractive dusty quality. Reasonably round and well balanced in the mouth, this wine is definitely accessible now with its good ripness and fairly tame tannins. Not a sauvage wine, this one shows some class. I prefer this to the Cuvee des Cadettes, which seems to show too much oak to me.

This La Nerthe is still delicious, but not unique like 05. I would say it's classic like many other good ChdP wines. It has lovely smell of wet forest, tobacco, minerals, red fruits, but nothing else.

Starting to be lighter in colour and brownish, this CdP is now very developped and needs to be drunk up. Nose and palate dominated by plum. Finish is still ok with a bit of pepper and slightly in the sweet side. I like it very much, but one needs to like this tertiary/plummy taste.

The palate is very elegant- medium-bodied, brightly acidic with notes of blackberry, black olives, balsamic soy. It has a long, smoky finish with dusty tannins and a hint of pepper spice. Drink now until 2031.

It came together so well that it is difficult to describe in multiple phrases. I was consumed by the nose, the palate on entry, the mid-palate, and the close.

Pleasant wine, drinking well now, though might improve. A bit lighter than the typical CduP of 2001. Nice, not special.

Very approachable, easy drinking CdP. Good balance and tannins seemed fully integrated, although the finish seemed to lack depth.

SWILL November Tasting - Southern Rhone (win's house in Southlake, TX): WIML91
Tasted November 23, 2007. Opened and served immediately. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of rich blank currants, berries, roasted meat and rose petals. Flavors of black berries, cherries and plums. Medium to vibrant acidity, integrated tannins, medium to full body. Can be drank now if you'd just like to burn one or continue to hold. Perfect example of why people like to drink CdP young and old.

Color was light red, semi-clear edges; nose had spice and red fruit; palate was closed upon opening, but after 30 minutes had meat, spice, dark fruit.

WIML91, PURPLE91,WA90,WS93
Tasted June 2, 2007 at home. Opened and poured large enough tastes for PURPLE and myself to break the neck of the bottle and recorked and stood up in the cellar for two hours before finally serving in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum. No material difference between the two tastings. Dark plum color in the glass, slightly dusty looking throughout. Nose of red plums, black currants and rose petals. Flavors of red berries, red cherries and light notes of red currants. Medium acidity, integrated tannins and medium body. Well balanced. Drink or hold.

Seemed very fresh and vibrant. Had alongside the 03 Clos du Pape, and the were similar.

No formal notes. One of my perennial favorites from th Rhone. Always drinkable young but will likely improve and drink better with more time in bottle. No rush on this one. Let it cellar.

Suze Tasting (Suze, Dallas, Texas): Some red fruit aromas with a background of smoked oak and cedar. This was followed by balanced flavors involving plums and a hint of nutmeg. Very solid wine that should be a staple CdP. 88-91

The tannins were sweet and supple which also added a bit of enjoyment, and it matched very well with it culinary counterpart, but it was not my favorite of the evening.

lovely purple color obviously young with a touch of heat on the nose. Velvety, smoother than I expected and the finish while good, not great. Looking forward to enjoying this with a chicken in a mushroom, tomato sauce. Nice wine.

Dark garnet red and very clear. Nice rich nose of dark fruit, earth, and pepper. The nose is wonderful and complex. It's dark and fruity and then it's light and florally. The palate is smooth and a little sweet. Very nice mouth feel. A good amount of fine grained tannins but they are not intrusive. This stuff is very easy to drink. Long finish. 50 + 5 + 12 + 17 + 7

From magnum. Medium-ruby colour with garnet tinges. Medium-bodied, with red fruit and currant. Quite tight, not showing much. Leave this in the cellar. Not Rated.

My first experience with CdP. Wow ! Drank with pork loin in mushroom/fig sauce. Very refined and silky smooth. Floral nose with a light mouth feel. Spice and red fruit. Good acidity with restrained tannins. Excellent finish.

Tasty ingredients don't always make for a good stew, dusty rose, wet earth, candied apples, plum, tar, licorice, high glycerin levels with powerful but sweet tannins
