Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2023 Edition; 10/20/2023-10/22/2023 (Piedmont, Italy): Decanted and served and unfortunately did not have much time to observe this evolve as it was one bottle among a few of us. Still though the wine sings from the start on the nose. Divided us if this was a great example of a well aged Barolo or if this was past. For sure it has seen better years. Still the fruit was there, bottle was healthy and had an elegance to it. Just you were left with the feeling why didn’t we meet lovely friend fine years ago… Andreas 94 / Nicol 90 > 92

Absolutely beautiful. Dried rose petals and Allspice on the nose Cedar box. Light bodied. Elegant and subtle wine. Really great all around. Paired with white truffle risotto. Spectacular pairing

1998 Barolo & Barbaresco – A 20-year retrospective (AI Fiori): The ‘98 Lazzarito has seen better days. The nose was dark, a bit murky, and muddled, showing ripe red fruits, sweet herbs, spice, and a hint of olive. On the palate, I found a soft, plush expression with fleshy cherry fruit, brown spices, and quirky acidity. The finish was medium-long with dark cherry tones and earthy minerals. I would like to think this was just the bottle, but it’s not the first time that I’ve experienced the ‘98 Lazzarito aging unevenly.

The ‘98 Lazzarito was certainly a wine from another time in the history of Vietti, the nose was dark with sweet herbs, hints of olives, minerals and black cherry. On the palate, I found a remarkably soft, almost plush expression, with dark blue and red fruits, brown spices and sweet herbs. It finished long on dark fruit and minerality with licorice and balsamic hints.

Not the last dinner at Rothmann's (NYC): Not a distinctly oaky nose, but dark, with mellow brown spice, smoke, and a touch of alcohol. Palate shows dark cherry, wood smoke, some oak, brown spice, and a long finish softening around the edges. The more this airs, the more I think that the palate is very round and lacks edge. The finish is interesting and long, but the palate is not very detailed. Not sure whether this is just a '98 that is now showing really soft, or whether this wine was smothered with oak. Thanks, Fernando.

Opened, and decanted for an hour. Unlike other reviews, we did not discover much of a nose on this. Wonderful classic barolo taste though, nice and full and continued to loosen up nicely through the meal (lamb). Beautiful fruits, and balanced, big, covering the palate, and wonderful long-lasting finish.

93+. Fantastic nose of chocolate, flowers, with tea, oak, tar and perhaps a pinch of minerals in the background. On the palate, plenthy of chocolate and sour cherry, with maybe some suggestions of darker fruit (plum, blackberry?). Medium-full bodied. Very bright and high-pitched, but also quite powerful. Lively acidity, bold but fine-grained tannins. Exotic spice emerges on the mouthwatering and wonderfully long finish. Drinking well with healthy decant, but still strikes me as a bit tight. Lots of life ahead, I think. Of the few quality Barolos I've had the opportunity to try, this is probably the best thus far. I really like this style.

Vietti Dinner with Luca Currado (Ai Fiori Restaurant in the Langham Place Hotel, NYC): [Double decanted for one hour around 9am.] Oaky nose. Dirty on the palate. I don't think it is a good bottle.

Perfectly aged nebbiolo. Needed some time, but loved every bit of it. Wished I had taken notes.
