50/50- Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah. The anticipation of this wine was followed by a bit of deflation. Purchased Fall, 2008 from the winery, as it was showing well at that time. For $44 it should be damn good and it wasn't as good as comparable wines for $20-30 from the same region. Very muted aromatics of white pepper and cherry. It showed dull black fruits, mulled spices on the palate and offered a clean, simple finish. Therefore, I decanted for an hour and then revisited in another hour, no change. It is rather non-descript and lacks any real finesse. It is possible this is past it's prime drinking window.

Thick and concentrated, it fills the mouth with rich, supple dark fruit. While polished, it has youthful verve and minor soft tannin that will mellow with short term age. I get black pepper with the dark fruit and a subtle, background green pepper that fades second day. Very nice wine but the fruit expression is slightly generic, not cabernet, not syrah, basic red. Texture the highlight. Now with air or wait a few years.

Cathedral Ridge Winery Holiday Celebration (The Governor Hotel, Portland, OR): Wine of the Night for me. Take all of the best things about the Reserve Cabernet and the Reserve Syrah (50% of each) and put them together, you will have this wine. Very complex, with well-integrated tannins, big fruit and pepper flavors, and a touch of earth and flowers to make it interesting. Delicious!
