A great bottle! Good cork. Initially very closed, tannic almost bitter but some black fruit underneath - I was worried. Decanted 4 hours before serving into a closed bottle, served blind. What a change! Sensational plum, mocha, liquorice, cedar, blackcurrant, truffle and wonderful things going on. Good acidity and those tannins while significant seemed softened. An excellent drink in a bracket of three about the same age but the Villeneuve won the popular vote.

A substantial mouthful of plums, baked figs and mocha. Somewhat corpulent but this is no ordeal thanks to its acidic sensibilities. Still drinking well on the fruit although I’m not sure if I’d age this for much longer.

Decanted 1 hour before drinking.3rd time I have had this wine and both previous bottles were better. Light to moderate sediment. Brick red color. This had more fruit than the 2000 La Nerthe I also opened. The red fruit had a little bitterness mixed in. This is fading. Drink now. 83 points.

Coravin: Inky ruby. Nose has red berries, leather. Less rich than the CEG and CDJ of the same vintage and less of the pruney notes, but livelier. Medium length. 87-90. Decanted: Above + meaty notes on nose. Dark fruit and meaty notes on palate, spicy. Moderate length. 88-90.

Powerful, full-bodied and rich and packed with flavours of raisins and ripe plums. Clearly a biggie but falls short of the full sledgehammer treatment as the weight is kept in check with a clearly defined acid structure. This slipped down remarkably easily for such a big wine. Very different to the more feminine, fruit-driven 2012 we had in mag at l’Absinthe. At its peak right now but will prob go another 3 years without too much difficulty. I shudder to think what its big brother will taste like.

2007 always causes a bit of trepidation with Chateauneuf. So many wines have been overripe, over alcoholic, overdone. Not so here. This is an elegant wine, with very classic herbal, leather, earth and dusty fruit flavors. It’s a little bit subtle, so needs food that is not aggressively flavored, but it’s a wine for drinking, and isn’t that what a wine should be.

Second Sunday Group: 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape (R&D's): Notes of dark fruit with earth, incense and spice as well as a subtle rubbery quality. Flavors of dark fruit, rubber, spice, and pepper. Shuts down in the glass, develops a bit of a grapey note.

Opened and decanted an hour before serving, while the nose is interesting from the start, it does take over an hour to get its act together. Licorice, spice, and black cherry are indeed all there. Works better with food. The flavours aren't as clear/bright as they could be given more time. The 2006 is clearly much more suitable for drinking now than the 2007, though this works after decanting. It could (and probably should) be kept for a few more years. Disappointing performance in the second evening. Overall decent but somewhat below expectation.

Tuesday Night Double Blind <$40 (Bin 75): Darker core, aged, large bricking; aged on the nose too, dried leaves, figs, ripe year, some soy, large wine; sweeter fruit, ripe year, ripe, hot; seems aged- called '01, nothing like aging wines at the top of the warehouse in the big box store it was purchased from.

Garnet/crimson color. Aromas of chocolate, black cherry, currants, mint and herbs. Lovely red fruit, cherry and boysenberry qualities, with pepper and garrigue tones. Juicy and forward. Guessed 2007 CndP.
Dinner in Nashville (Burger Up - Franklin, TN): As 2007 CdP goes, this is quite elegant. Had that brambly red fruit with subtle undergrowth notes and lots and lots of red fruits. Luckily, the palate wasn't an alcoholic mess (as I've found many 2007 CdP's to be of late) and had decent balance and a nicely spicy and rich character. A pleasant surprise.

Dense, cloudy, dark red with lots of bricking; tart red fruit on the nose along with a pronounced density, slight fig, warm stone, distinctly Grenache; dark richness, bitter chocolate, dense, sweet, and a hint of bitterness on the finish. Quality wine, seemed older than 2007 for sure, drinking well.

Solid. Tastes a little ripe and jammy. Also a little hot. Heat shows at the back and the finish is not very impressive. Overall comes across like a poor man's Domaine Du Vieux Telegraphe La Crau. (For what it's worth, I drank the stunning 2003 Pontet-Canet the night prior so my view may be skewed at present.) Will save the other bottle to drink next to an '07 La Crau.

This is the base CdP cuvee of Domaine Font de Michelle. The vines average 45 years old (some as old as 110 years). The blend is 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% other grapes. Traditional fermentation and aging in large foudres and smaller futs. Known as a good ager. 2007 was an excellent vintage in the Southern Rhone. I got this on sale for $20 (marked down from about $37). Opened my first of these with Anwar and Trigirl after dinner. Not decanted (which would have helped). Reddish purple color. Solid tannins. A medium bodied wine with notes of black currant, berries and cherries. 91 points (which is in line with WS and WA).

Decanted an hour and a half. Nose was tight but with some red fruit, herbs and alcohol. Flavors were also tight and reflected the nose: a little fruit, herbs and heat. A couple of glasses the next night did not yield much more other than showing a bit of the oxidation. I have a little left and if something happens I will update this note unless it is more of the same. I was disappointed but am hoping it is just in a strange place right now. My score reflects the wine that I drank, I hope, and would think, that it could improve after some time.

A 101 on how to make a modern Tradition-cuvee Chateauneuf… although I suppose it helps if you have a vintage like 2007 to work with. Actually, some friends deprecated FdM as making thin and acidic CdP in the past; so part of the success of this wine may well be the overlay of vintage onto house style. Or maybe they’ve improved…
… Anyway, what I was getting at is that they’ve kept this worthy of being a CdP: in this case via fine, silken tannins, such that this wine will simply drink across its initial years, rather than taking a dip now that it’s youthful flesh and fruit are gone. So, there’s not so much body evident now, but the elegant structures tease the mouth and get me sneaking back into the kitchen after the meal for extra sips. Classic fruit-cake, subtle leather, earth, faint vanilla pod, fig and restrained, bright, red-purple fruit are delivered. Such high herbs (ie nice acidity) aromatically, together with a little alcoholic heat, which does work as part of that package, and doesn’t recur within the palate. An elegant, balanced, translucent, clean and giving Chateauneuf; for drinking-up in the next few years. Doesn’t quite have the balancing fruit intensity which would give an even higher score and which would have made it a candidate for ageable elegant wine. Quite a thrill to have had this though. 91.

Plush and inviting, though limited in its depth, with a forward nose full of currant paste, roasted plum, menthol, lavender and baked earth notes. also tasted at the '07 CDP tasting at the Bottle Shop. This started darker on the nose and palate, and ended up with a linear bruit/acid balance on the finish. Nicely made with herbal and spice accents. Not as big as the Usseglio but more complex and approachable.

Fine Vines Fall Grand Tasting (OneSixtyBlue, Chicago IL): nose: rich and dense nose of black cherries, garrigue, black and red currants, and a good amount of roasted herbs. Excellent depth goes with this and its relatively open
taste: excellent medium/full feel and rich tones of liqueur, roasted herbs, black cherries, garrigue, and black fruits. Some good tannins back this up and there is a bit of heat on the back end
overall: A really good CdP. Well balanced with a nice richness, this could use a bit of time to smooth it out and let it really sing

also tasted at the '07 CDP tasting at the Bottle Shop. This started darker on the nose and palate, and ended up with a linear bruit/acid balance on the finish. Nicely made with herbal and spice accents. Not as big as the Usseglio but more complex and approachable.

2007 Chateauneuf tasting at Beltramos: Decent medium red fruit, quite forward, OK balance, Ok but uninteresting.

"Slumming" with the Friday Brown Bag Group (Rich & Dana's): Garnet color. Primary aroma of raspberry, followed by notes of dusty herbs and spice. Flavors of raspberry and cherry, with a nice lingering finish. Maybe just a touch hot on the finish. Decanted 1.5 hours. Guessed 2007 southern Rhone. 92+ points.
