Drinking great right now. Unmistakably Rhone with Garrigue, earth, lots of grenache fun. Not much serious side, but it's lively and fun. Probably as good as it'll get. Drink now, I think.

Deep red colour with a leather touch to it. Nose is mature with notes of leather and dried cranberries and strawberries. In mouth it's pleasant, medium bodied plus with somewhat dried out tannins, nice acidity and notes of dried cranberries and strawberries, and leather.
Fully mature Chateauneuf here, don't expect this to get any better from here.

Very good wine. Deep in the glass with generous scents: blackberry jam, cherries, black pepper, aniseed, slightly balsamic with hints of smoked ham. Tannins well integrated in a full and rounded body. In the ending good minerality and a little salty note.

Bought it few weeks before. Put very good conditions to drink it (bringing it to room temperature since the morning, opening gently in the end of the afternoon for a nice diner with friends), it did not perform on the day, gave it other try in the following day, but was still the same. Not passed but pure emptiness.
Ended up in the sink.
Since that is a recent bottling of the wine (confirmed by the winemaker, that could have just said it was a problem with a bottle, but rather listed me the name of restaurants still buying it), was very disappointed of the quality, specifically in comparison with price paid.
Had been buying those wine since 2016 to 2021, will probably not be doing that in the future.

Drinking perfectly. Mature, yet still with primary fruit, the sweet Grenache rules, sings of the land with plenty of local herbs; a claassic wine, no hurry to drink this, but drinking a point IMHO. #cellarinventory

Une belle surprise car le vin est un peu évolué mais il est resté complexe et pas écœurant comme certains. Le vin est aussi très agréable en bouche, fin. C'est joli. 15/20

Drink up. Still drinking well, but not sure how much longer that will be the case. But for now this is a mature wine with soft tannins, still some good fruit and nicely in balance.

I read: "je ne suis pas trop amateur". Moi, non aussi. And that, of course should be Aussie. A very forward wine = musty dark nose. Actually, the wine is gong over, but you still pick up on its quality, its classic CNP balance of dark notes and depth. Another glass to go.
But what is happening in the Ukraine is making me feel sick (malade).

Black and blue fruit, dark flowers, gravelly minerality, and noticeable alcohol on the nose. Nice complexity. Alcohol very well integrated on the palette. Plenty of licorice on the palette, extending to the finish. Not as much fruit, definite secondary and tertiary flavours. Intense. Excellent value, £32.50 from the excellent Bowland Forest Vintners.

Brownish color. Already a quite old and very tertiary, advanced, tannins are soft. Sweet, tobacco. Rich, soft, alcoholic. May be it is the bottle or may be the ripe 2007 vintage but this showing felt more like a CdP from the 90ies.

La couleur passée indique que le vin est bien évolué. Au nez, c'est pas terrible. En bouche, pas de surprise le vin est évolué : des aromes kirchés et tout le reste... c'est pas mauvais mais très monolithique et je ne suis pas trop amateur. 13/20

My second (and luckily last) bottle from same source. Identical to first bottle, nose is very unpleasant and colour has clear brown already. Based on the nose, makes me think both bottles had been disposed to heat at some point of their life.

Quality CDP. I would term it "entry level" for its flavor profile. Could pick out that it's a CDP, but it didn't wow. Not over the top. Not beyond its years.

Nice wine that picked up steam as time passed, but had trouble keeping up with an amazing '07 Clos des Papes. This bottle offered mainly dark fruits on nose and palate. (93-94)(Aug. 16, Gates Lodge)

Honestly, this wine seemed past it prime and kind of boring. The fruit has faded and it is sort of lacking in character at this point. Maybe it is just an off bottle.

This bottle is performing a lot better than the last one I tried. The color is orange at the rim and it has a good fruity nose to it. On the palate, the fruit forward nature of this vintage shows through with lots of sweet juicy berry fruit, earthiness, garrique and a little spice.

A small tasting sample. After finding the first bottle quite unpleasant, with a distinct barnyardy flavour, I hoped that my second (and thankfully last) bottle might be different. It took only a small sip to see that it was as bad as the first. I marked the first bottle as ‘flawed’, hoping it was a one-off. It was not. I have therefore consulted the Wine Rating Assistant and marked this as 69 (‘Avoid’).
Post Script: Following a comment to the effect that the wine may have been heat damaged, I have now removed the rating and marked this bottle also as 'flawed'.
Fully mature, with a distinctive barnyardy flavour which may be from a heavy dose of brettanomyces. Initially it just tasted unusual, but in due course it became unpleasant. If I had to mark it, I would struggle to give it 79. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and put it down as flawed, hoping that my other bottle is not similarly affected.

This wine is certainly very mature. It has a garnet red color and a typical du Pape nose. On the palate there are nice red fruits and garrique. The wine is good, but not exciting from what was once hailed the best vintage of the past 30 years. I would drink these up while the fruit lasts.

Dark garnet no brick. Nose is tight although by third day it showed some kirsch and spice. It drinks well with well rounded red fruits wrapped in moderate tannins with an acid core and touches of garrigue. Good finish.

Silky, sweet and fresh, this is just hitting its peak. If you are sitting on any bottles, pop cork for the juicy, lush, sweet, earthy, red fruits, spice, herbs and olives that are found from start to finish.

Rich, fat almost, lots of Grenache here, very ripe fruit, hints of alcohol, but nothing serious; very primary still, yet I am not sure where the 2007's are going. Will stay away for a couple of years.

Note : 16-16,25 90-91

4th Saturday Group brown bagger (R&D's): Double blind. Garrigue. Your nose goes to the glass and you are greeted with a textbook example of garrigue- lavender, herbs, spice and underbrush. There's also red currant, plum, clay and licorice. Medium-bodied with flavors of red fruit, spice and herbs with a terrific meaty quality too. Guessed 2007 Chateauneuf.

A rich, full bodied wine, lots of stuffing here; sweet Grenache galore, a creamy texture and a good lenght. It finishes warm an treathens to dry out, but on day 2&3 this is still very much alive.

2007 CdP retro (with sushi food pairing) (Streeterville, Chicago): Nose: The nose is ripe and richer with hot stones, red fruits, red cherries, spice tones, raspberries, and some red florals. While this favors a riper side, there are some attractive and creamy red fruits.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium tannins. The tannins are silky with the feel showing some plushness with hot stones, red fruits, red cherries, red florals, licorice, liqueur, and some noticeable alcohol.
Overall: This would be fantastic if the alcohol wasn't a bit out of balance. It has avoided some of the stewed qualities that other wines have had with some ripe and balanced red fruits on the nose and palate. It does lack some depth though that would really send this into a different level.

#alternativepairings (Chicago, IL): Clos du Mont olivet is really candied and flabby. It has gained a lot of weight and this is a real problem! But the palate is still thin and tastes like bitter greens!
Disappointing that the fruit has faded. I think the hot vintage did these in. Just earth and flabbiness with a short finish. Food helps a little, but it never developed at all over a few hours.

Mostly CDP's; 10/23/2016-10/27/2016 (Gary): Presented as a Taiwanese cabernet/merlot blend. I truly believed that's what I was drinking, maybe because I'm a trusting person, and maybe because I've no idea what kind of wine comes out of Taiwan. Well, it didn't taste like a cabernet/merlot blend. The nose is kirsch and raspberry liqueur. The palate is woody and a bit hollow. There is also smoke and dirt. This one seemed a bit rough.

Wow, this is a fantastic wine which has developed nicely since my last tasting. Zweder is spot on with his note:
" In the bouquet beautiful and fresh red forest fruits, garrigue, leather and coffee. On the palate mostly red fruits, herbs and spices, minerals, some licorice, elegant and fresh acidity, soft tannin and some pleasant bitterness in the finish."
I would only add that the finish is beautifully mouthwatering.

Glad to have finished these and a good reason for not buying more CDP - but for a few exceptions (Pegau comes to mind) overall a disappointing Appellation with over-priced, simple wines like this one. I am just amazed that they can get such high scores.... The 15% alcohol comes through loud and clear and this is the definition of rustic! I once had great hopes for this but perhaps my tastes have changed too.

Garnet with some tawny edging the disc. A whiff of brett, garigue and roasted beef. Tense entry. This offers raspberry liqueur, black tea and a mineral wash. Some heat and acidity poking through the finish. Plus finish. Fine, silky tannins. This seems to have some upside. Open the next one in a year or two. 88

What a difference from a year ago: the ugly duckling has turned into a beautiful white swan in only 14 months. Judging by other notes, it seems there has been a lot of bottle variation. My first bottle may have been off, or just not ready, but on this night this wine was stellar. Candied red and dark fruit on the nose with a great garrigue punch, with a full, square palate, lots of savory notes, and pronounced dark cassis and licorice, with a refined and even elegant finish. Just P&P'd, was ready in 20, and did not taste hot at all. Went fantastic with a Fathers Day weekend, car-camping meal of grilled filet, roasted potatoes, and asparagus. Drink now.

This one was not to my liking. It seems passed peak already and it is only eight years old. It was bricking at the rim and minimal nose associated with it. Definitely not an enjoyable and would not recommend it. Sorry I have two more bottles. Only saving factor, they are not expensive.

Four years later and it has certainly improved but already has some bricking and tastes like it is already a bit oxidized and at the beginning of its decline. It drinks fine with simple Italian food (pizza, lasagna etc) but there is nothing special about this wine and I am glad I did not pay much for my remaining bottles...

After trying another bottle at home I am again disappointed. It is disjointed and not where I hoped it would be. I am not sure this will improve much with age. Perhaps it can get some earthy complexity and offset the very forward fruit and low acid nature of this bottling.

Boy this was ripe. This came across as the fruits were almost mushy and baked in the sun. Little structure to speak of here. Not sure there is any upside from here. Good debate at the table whether the regular cuvée was better than the Papet. I personally sided on the Papet.

Drank at CDP (2004 - present) dinner at Chez Simo. At this stage it is disjointed like many 2007s. The fruit was with black cherry (when first decanted it was red jammy fruit). I do think it can get a little better but at this point I am not sure of that. I have more bottles and hopefully they will be better. It did suffer by comparison.

A flawless ChduPape. Lots of cherry, ripe raspberries, strawberry jam in the front of the palate followed a fuller dark cherry, blackberry finish. Very open; perfectly resolved. I don't know the varietal composition, but the smoothness weighs toward grenache. And quite long on the finish. A very satisfying wine, and well worth the price.

Nice showing for this bottle. I think its at peak but there is some time to drink this before it goes down. Ruby/purple in color. Lovely nose of raspberries, some earthiness, a bit of spice, slight floral note. Quite complex and deep on the nose. Less complex on the palate. It drinks well with some depth. Some complexity. Quite smooth. Completely integrated. Nice balance. Soft acidity. Food friendly. Not one of those very ripe 07's.

Deep dark purple. decanted for 30 mins. The wine seems ready for consumption and not sure it will get better with more time/age. The alcohol is unusually high, burning sensation of heat. But the fruit and tannins seems to have integrated, smooth finish.

This was a really strange and bad bottle. Started out with a nose full of licorice and garrigue, some stable notes, licorice, smoked meat, black fruit, alcohol heat. Rather nice actually (except for the heat). On the palate however the fruit was stone dead! The only thing it showed was heavy alcohol and some weird vinegar acid. Not corked or oxidized, just weird. I had half a glass and the rest went into the sink. Unfortunately (?) I have one more bottle in the cellar, so I guess I will find out if this was an off bottle, or if this is the wine. I will score this a FLAW.

Garnet red with slight bricking. Nose of cooked red fruit, nutmeg, licorice, garrigue floor. It is fading a bit on all 3 senses but has a framework of ripe red fruit and spicy acidity to sustain it thru the palate. The oak tannin is well-integrated but starting to get a little sawdusty. Past prime but still sublime.

This was disjointed and unbalanced on night one, but much improved on night two, when I took these notes. Dark, cloudy, sappy purple color. Pronounced nose of kirsch, red licorice, candied strawberries and raspberries, and a nice note of cinnamon baking spice. The palate is full-bodied with nice viscosity, brining Manhattan cherries, ripe blackberries, black licorice, and touches of herbs, spices, mushrooms, and garrigue. The finish is still not yet complete and sort of drags this wine down: the tannins are messy and intrusive and the acidity is uneven. However, this has potential and is from a respected Estate, so I would let rest a few more years. Drink 2017-2020.

Casual dinner gathering with Rhone wines (小杬公菜館 Siu Lam Kung Restaurant): Young and rather tight at this stage. Aromatics of fresh berry, earth, iron, mint and prune. Red fruits, tart, spice on the palate, with creamy texture. Finish is lacking the depth, perhaps due to it's young age. Give it a few more years of cellaring, it should add more complexity and richness to the wine.

A well made wine, but one in which the extreme ripeness detracts from the overall character of the wine. I find this monolithic and lacking sharp or vivid flavors, acidity, fruit and complexity. Rather tannic, but not closed aromatically.

First nose: whiff of vanilla and forest berry jam. Soon more complexity: seaweed and nori, garrigue and stems, black pepper and kirsch. The taste is full-bodied with powerful development on the palate, but also shows good freshness and certain amounts of elegance. At this stage, the massive baby-fat fruit has pulled back a bit to expose the respectable stemmy tannin structure and the remarkably long kirsch & black pepper finish. This is a brilliant old-school cuvée tradition that drinks quite well at the moment and seems set to peak in about five years, most likely with a long plateau of maturity (2017-2027).

Very nice nose of provencale herbs, a mossy/earthy element and just the barest hint of dried red fruits. The nose has really evolved over the last couple of years, moving away from the ripe fruit-driven profile of youth and the vintage towards the more classic notes of Chateauneuf. On the palate, it's medium bodied with a mid-palate of dried fruit and a gritty, rustic finish showing dried herbs and a nice earthy complexity. Anyone who thought that the '07's were all just fruit bombs should try this wine......I will probably wait another year to crack my next bottle and then drink the remaining over the next 3-5 years....this is tasty wine and once the tannins soften on the end, it will be even better.

Loads of grapes, blackberries, and spice in this 07 CDP. 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, and 4% from a mix of six other grapes. Needed about 45 minutes to open up, but our patience was rewarded with a smooth drinking wine. Long tart finish.

Decanted for about 2 hours, drank with grilled steak (and dry rub). The ripeness of this vintage really shows through. Really dark purple/blue color. Nose of ripe and dark fruit, blackberries, black cherry, currant, grapey. Heat showing through on the nose. Ripe fruit continues on the palate. Flavors of cooked fruit, blackberry and black cherry with a not much heat on the back end. Considering the ripeness of the vintage and the fruit the lack of serious heat one the palate shows good winemaking.

Gaining some nice spice complexity. Whereas in '09 the tannins were still pushy and the fruit too sweet, and in '10 the fruit was overwhelming everything else (where exactly did those bright strawberries come from anyway) now the fruit is finally subsiding and some good cdp spices are becoming evident. Best are the green peppercorn and suggestion of paprika that work well to stave off the fruits, which have darkened nicely and become more of a brambly blackberry adventure. I think this is also the most enjoyable of the bottles I've had on this cuvee, and alas, it's also my last one. Really nice midpalate as well, with a good balance of the dusky tannins and spices. I really didn't think that I was ever going to warm up to the '07 vintage, but as year three (in bottle) is starting I'm hoping that I misjudged based on the over the top fruits and that it will come along nicely. One thing I like about all of those young frutis - hopefully the expected CdP shutdown will either be delayed (that seems to be the case at this time) or else very much minimalized.

This is raw and unready for drinking - simple in character and way too primary. It tasted great at the winery on release but has now become mono-dimensional. I am a skeptic about the ageablilty of Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines having tasted several of the great names in 2009 from top estates (Beaucastel, Vieux Telegraphe) from the 1998 vintage. Out of 5 bottles we poured 3 down the sink - the only one I remember which was good was the Clos des Papes and even that I have had in other vintages which were highly lauded and I found to be lacking in character and complexity. Is CDP a big scam? After all these were mostly Cooperative wines not that long ago and only elevated to their current high-flown status thanks to two American journals. Anyway, I digress, this CDP shows poorly right now and I hope that it will wake up one day and prove me wrong since my cellar is weighed down by a few more bottles ...

Talk about a wine where the nose and the taste (and especially the mouthfeel) just don't match up. Nose has some big extracted grenache notes - blackberry kirsch and tanned leathery, almost mushroomy bloomings. It promises some solid grenache joy, but once it hits the tongue the dream never goes anywhere - it just kinda ends abruptly. Not to say that there's no big flavor, but whatever it is this ain't a typical grenache cdp. It's got too much red, tangy fruit - almost like michigan cherry sour candies and then there's the tannins - they are big but they're not friendly, and that mushroom floor? - it got replaced by some cotton candy sweets. I had the same wine about a year ago and liked it much more at that time - the nose was the same but the mouthfeel definitely matched up with the promise of the bouquet. Now, well maybe in about five years it will come back and show some grenache love but for now I'm not Parker believing with this puppydog.

I am not really sure where this came from. It was in my cellar and popped and poured. On Day 1 it drank really well. Aromas of rasberries, spice and violets. Great texture. Ssome complexity but really just very easy to drink. Not quite as good on day 2, but still very nice. Nothing over ripe or too intense about this wine. At the right price, this would be excellent over the next 5 to 7 year IMO.

I am wondering if this wine was corked or if it is supposed to taste like this. This is my first CDP and the funkiness is just overwhelming. tastes almost like drinking straight apple cider vinegar with ample amounts of barn and hay included. Wine is very much closed. Young stuff, but I had to try it. Very primary aromas of violets, framboise, and lavender hints at mesquite and wet stone. Impressive palate, very suave and sleek, coats the mouth with concentrated raspberry, floral tones, and bits of tea and seaweed. Very mild finish, great length and fine grained tannin. Saturated seems to be heavy in 2007, but this is set apart by the very high mineral content, finish is almost salty.

2007 Rhones $20 to $40: Another of my favorites that should really improve over five years. Complex nose of black raspberries and spic. Also some cherries. Juicy texture with softer tannins. Long finish. Still needs plenty of time but I think three years might do it for this one and be good for another seven.

full nose, intriguing overlays with dark fruits, earth tones, spice box; palate opened up big time with air; big but supple fruit mouth and full and round tannins; excellent mid palate; maybe too polished for me ; had a bit of a hole; complex , engaging and semi-long finish with overtones of menthol; should age well

This wine has a traditional, old world, CdP profile and doesn't fit the mold of the hype given to the 2007 CdPs. I bought it, however, hoping for more new world fruit than old world earthiness, so was disappointed.

Should have decanted this for hours, as it was tight as a drum. Black cherry, garrigue, green herbs and a meaty quality were buried by huge tannins. Got much better with the last glass.

wineflock- 2007 CdPs (Bob's house, Northbrook IL): nose: real good and attractive nose that has a seductive side to it with tones of black fruits, black cherries, hoison sauce, a touch of underbrush, and a good helping of dark berry tones. Excellent depth with a real sense to it
taste: excellent supporting tannins right now that make themselves know, but aren't overbearing. Extremely smooth and polished medium feel with tasty tones of black fruits, black cherries, hoison sauce, and bits of brambly tones
overall: group no7 my no3. This is very tasty right now, and certainly needs some time to fully show itself off. This is just a flat out mega steal at around $35 a bottle. This certainly has the tannin to last a good while and should be rather enjoyable over the course of its life too

Perfumey ripe grenache on the nose. Very pretty. Elegant medium bodied CdP. Long pleasant finish. Very well made. A great value for CdP. May drink another in 2010 but will cellar the rest. Open now but will last and only get better.

Very promising, but somewhat closed wine. Liquorice dominates the aroma profile now, but you can find that exeptional 2007 CdP fruit beneath. This is going to be long-lived. I will wait for about five years before trying again. After that I believe this will merit a few points more.

Barrel sample. Full bodied. A lot of primary fruit. Very juicy. Still very, very young. For the moment a score of 89. But in this vintage the ordinary cuvées seem to have the concentration of the special cuvées. So when the final blend is the same as the barrel sample the score might gain a few points after ageing a few years. Also see my other notes from 2007 (from this domain).

I read: "je ne suis pas trop amateur". Moi, non aussi. And that, of course should be Aussie. A very forward wine = musty dark nose. Actually, the wine is gong over, but you still pick up on its quality, its classic CNP balance of dark notes and depth. Another glass to go.

Drink now.

Deep dark purple. decanted for 30 mins.
The wine seems ready for consumption and not sure it will get better with more time/age.
The alcohol is unusually high, burning sensation of heat.
But the fruit and tannins seems to have integrated, smooth finish.
Other than the alcohol it was quite good.. But again don't think it will get any better

Tight when opened with flavors of cherry pit, spice and licorice. Still young with good sweet tannins. Over the next hour, raspberry and other red fruit came out, the tannins mellowed and the wine became very aromatic. Its young, but ready. Will probably get better.

"Slumming" with the Friday Brown Bag Group (Rich & Dana's): Garnet color. Aromas of candied raspberry puree and spice, with a subtle blueberry note. Full-bodied, with spice, cherry and raspberry flavors. Guessed 2007 southern Rhone. This had been decanted for about 1.5 hours. 92-93 pts.
