Wanted to compare a pop-and-pour bottle with the remnants of yesterday’s bottle, and there is very little difference between the two. Explosive nose of black and red berries and sweet spice. Mouth-filling full body with some liqueur notes along with sappy dark berries and pepper. Medium(plus) acidity that lasts through the finish and urges another sip. This is a big, high alcohol wine, that keeps all of that in check. It isn’t the most complex Ridge zin, but a balanced, delicious one. Not sure if this will ever do the Zin-to-claret magic of some older Ridge wines but I sure would like to try one in another 10-20 years.

As the meal progressed and the Pagani ‘06 drained quickly, we opened this, poured one glass and put it away to avoid its temptations. Molasses dominates the nose and palate, but is quickly challenged by rhubarb, and cherry. The palate finishes with cocoa. It’s a very different wine from the ‘06 Pagani which has taken on claret-esque qualities. This East Bench is still big and full of Zin brashness, but still a delight to drink. A blended Zin of 92% Zin and 8% Petite Sirah. Some bits of sediment. 15.4% alc. With grilled London broil and charred shishito peppers. Recommended.

A full nose of brown sugar, rhubarb, rosemary, black cherry, plum and cinnamon. The nose is smart, clean and complete. Everything follows through on the palate. With dusty tannins, and a spicy finish. Yes the finish is hard, and clunky. The color is deep and rich. A blended Zin of 92% Zin and 8% Petite Sirah. Some bits of sediment. 15.4% alc. Dark garnet opaque color. The smells are sassafras, currant, strawberry, and dark berries. The tastes are peppery spices, dark berries, and woody notes. The alcohol seems high and the acidity is zingy while the tannins are dry and dusty.

A blend of 97% Zin and 8% Petit Sirah. This is much more complex than the ‘02 Lytton Springs, with its showing of eucalyptus, Zin fun, molasses, coca-cola, Dr. Pepper all on the nose well before a drop passes the lips. All of those flavors glide across the palate in nuanced tones as a claret-like mouthfeel cuts definite edges without being heavy or clunky. The finish toggles between Zin funk and a saline tilted mineral quality. This is one very nuanced wine; almost delicate for a Zin, carving a very memorable impression of this wine. So balanced that the 15.4% doesn’t even register on the palate. The Zin spent 2.5 years in American Oak (25% of which one or 2 years old while the remaining oak was 3 to 4 years old) with the Petit Sirah blended in after the first 6 months. Only a small amount of sediment. With smoked (pork) ribs. Recommended leaning to Highly Recommended.

Cranberry at the rim and a deep purple core proving this is still a youthful pour. Zin funk, boysenberry and sharp, biting rhubarb. Something “dusty” on the anise flavored finish. This is my first bottle of this vintage of the East Bench. If I had my druthers between East Bench and York Creek, I’m not sure which I would pick for Ridge’s Z List ... but I know I’d ditch the Ponzo from the list altogether. This is a “sweet” Zin in the sense that the fruit has a sweetness to it although the wine is completely dry (not a late picked/late harvest wine). A blended Zin of 92% Zin and 8% Petite Sirah. As youthful as this wine seems to be, the next one pulled may not be for another couple of years. Some concentrated and large chunks of sediment cling to the bottom of the bottle. 15.4% alc. With mushrooms and andouille sausage over fettuccine. Recommended.

Popped and poured. Enjoyed this over the course of a few hours with gazpacho, followed by dijon pork medallions at a favorite local BYO eatery... a perfect match! Concentrated fruit on the nose and palate, long finish with balanced lingering tannins. Surprisingly little heat for the 15.4% alcohol. Drinking VERY nicely now, a classic Ridge style Zin. Too bad I only have one left.

I was apprehensive opening this bottle since the last one I had about 8 months ago. The previous one must have been bad because this was definitely much softer and smoother and was nowhere near as hot as the other bottle.
Hints of pepper and spice with blackberry and black cherries. Decanted about 2 hours and was good with dinner as well as after. Overall, a decent Zin.

The opposite of a fruit bomb, this has an oaky, astringent taste that I honestly haven't acquired an appreciation for. Would have thought the 8% Petit Sirah would smooth it out, but no such luck. In fact, it's surprisingly one-dimensional.
Tried it again nine month later and it tasted like a different wine -- the astringent taste replaced by a nice, round wine that showed how I expected the Petite Sirah to influence overall taste and mouth feel.

deep ruby color and very aromatic after sitting open for 30 minutes. Dark cherry, Plum and spice aromas. First taste shows black cherries plum and a hint of peach in the mix. This wine has a very deep dark purple color to it. It is heavy bodied and while the alcohol content is high at 15.4%, it would be very hard to guess it to be that high. This wine is great to drink now, but easily has enough in it where it will continue to improve until 2015. It gives off aromas strong enough to smell several feet away from the glass, the aromas are of euclyptus, chocolate, peppermint, raspberry and briar. It tastes of blackberries, chocolate and peppermint. This is an outstanding wine all by itself and will gain more complexity through the next 5 years.

Even Ridge disappoints occasionally. On opening the first whiff gave away the store. This is one (over) ripe and alcoholic wine. Yep, there it is, 15.4%. Glunz Wines Fall Portfolio tasting (The Westin, Chicago IL): nose: very good rich nose filled with tones of black fruits, black licorice, along asian and black spices. The tones are a bit surface tones, though they do balance each other well
taste: full bodied with big tannins and rich tones of black cherries, black fruits, and asian spice tones. Fairly brooding on the palate and there is a touch of heat with it too
overall: Very good right now, this is a bit unforgiving right now and its hard to tell where this is gonna go
