Pretty delightful for current consumption. Pop/pour. On the nose, sour fruit with a soft funk. On the palate, fairly acidic but with enough fruit to carry it. Definitely not over the hill, but "drink it soon" would be my guess.

Medium reddish garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Fragrant, attractive & forward nose of ripe red fruits aromas of dark cherries, blueberries & plums with spice overtones of cloves & nutmeg, earthy/dusty, some floral notes of violets, cherry-cola & a touch of vanilla in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, elegant, ripe fruit flavors of sweet red cherries, strawberries & blueberries with spices, cherry cola, earthiness & minerals. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present & may be at or close to its peak of development at 10 years of age.

Lovely bottle. Great aromatics of ripe black fruit, soil and a whiff of leather. Decidedly New World on the palate but in the best possible way. Very Pinot-loads of fruit, black and red with ripe tannins and very nice balancing acidity. Drinking great and it should continue to for at least another 5 years.

Fragrant, attractive & forward nose of ripe red fruits aromas of cherries, raspberries & currants with spice overtones of nutmeg & licorice, dusty, some floral notes of violets, cherry-cola, earthy and a touch of vanilla in the background. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of smooth textured, elegant, well balanced, ripe red fruit flavors of sweet cherries, strawberries & blueberries with spice notes of nutmeg, some cherry cola, earthiness and minerals. Lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present and has limited potential for further development with additional aging.

Great nose of red fruits, dust and earth. Similar flavors on the the palate along with spice and a silky, lean, acidic mouthfeel. Deep, ripe fruit with a medium to full body. The fruit seems just a bit green/bitter and acidic, especially for the first hour (which I find to be very typical of this wine in all vintages) that slightly detracts from an otherwise really terrific wine. 92+

Opened this up to test it, as I had given a bottle as a gift recently. Initially, a bit heavy on acidity. An hour in a decanter improved this greatly. Excellent balance with just a hint of Oregon funk. Overall, relatively light and subtle, with no rough edges. Probably even better with the right food pairing - one that takes advantage of the acidity.

Nice Russian River Pinot but a tad fat, justs clomps along next to middling Willamette examples. Takes over from lighter food where the Willamette's enhance. Dark red and some blue fruits with some well integrated oak, but the acidity is lacking to form a harmonious whole. Tiresome after an entire glass or so. Fine for sipping. Cali Pinot fans will think I'm bonkers and find it light and elegant. So the world goes round.

Drank last night without notes. I love Hansel's wines -- with the possible exception of the North Slope. I have often found them to be just a bit too lean and perhaps somewhat green or bitter. This bottle however, had none of those flaws as it was rich, deeply flavored, smooth, nicely balanced and overall very enjoyable.

Aromas of strawberry and tart red cherry with new oak spice. Ripe fruit comes through clearly on palate, slightly sweeter than i would like and slightly short on acidity. but the overall fruit profile is impressive and enticing, leaving with an long, slightly spiced finish. I think this has upside potential from here. Probably the best Hansel Pinot Noir I recall ever trying.

Fabulous. This has really come into it's own. I tried this about 2 years ago and it was lean and very 'burgundian' at that time. Nose was killer, but it wasn't giving much. But a couple years later, this is now plush with ripe sweet Strawberry flavors. Just beautiful. Was surprised at how it has evolved in a good way, given my penchant for Cali / Oregon Pinots. Hansel is quite a talent. I will be picking up some 2009's. Outshined the 2007 South Slope, which we enjoyed as well, but seemed to have lost some of the primary fruit, although could have needed some more air. Enjoyed with Copper River Alaskan Salmon marinated with Soy Vay. Great pairing.

Big. Cali Pinot almost always throws me for a loop. No Decant. 2nd bottle of the night. Big, feral aromatics with more musk than flowers. Big red fruit on the palate, cherry with cranberry accents. My notes don't do CT service because of my preference for lighter, lower alcohol Pinots...
I will say this though. This Pinot was recommended to me as a Cali. Pinot that is mor "Burgundian" in nature. That's crap. If that's true....then I hate to see what the full throttle Cali. Pinot tastes like. Again...not my style so I won't score. But if you don't like Pinot's that hit like a heavyweight, be wary.

Opened this following a 2007 South Slope. The North Slope was much leaner with less plushness and less ripeness. Both were impeccably balanced with a smooth mouthfeel. The North Slope was much more food friendly - more acidic, more earthy, less sweet. Overall this was very burgundian in style and very enjoyable. Also less ripe and plush than a prior bottle.

This winery has to be the most under the radar pinot maker that I know. This wine is a beautiful pinot that is just starting to enter it's prime drinking window. A very well made pinot that has a beautiful balance of acidity and fruit. I love it. Just wish I had more them on bottle of this wine left.

Really nice nose of cherries, earth, smoke/dust and spice. Super-smooth with a velvety texture. Excellent balance and a nice fruity, mellow finish. This is just a bit riper and richer than I typically want in a pinot, but it was still very nice. One of my favorite pinot wineries.

Light red color. Aromas of allspice, red plums and violets. Ripe, medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with excellent structure and balance, great acidity and a long, cleansing finish. This wine is built for extended aging, but is already delicious and a great partner with food.

Not as impressive as other older bottles of North Slope that I've had...yet. Perhaps in time -- the high acidity was hard for me to get over even though the 3rd day seemed to show some very good underlying fruit. Nice structure as I've seen with lots of the '07s -- maybe they're all not just ready for consumption yet.

Tasted side-by-side, 2007 Chasseur Pinot Noir Russian River Valley, 2007 Walter Hansel Winery Pinot Noir Cuvée Alyce, 2007 Capiaux Cellars Pinot Noir Freestone Hill, 2007 Walter Hansel Winery Pinot Noir The North Slope. All RRV. Bottles were opened and aired in the cellar for 90 minutes. Initial tastes of each showed improvement as some alcohol blew off. They all shared a similar terroir-driven profile of baking spices, cedar, cherries, cola. The Chasseur was the heaviest of them all and it had the most reserved nose. It also had the most noticable alcohol. This put it at the bottom of the pack and no one wanted more than their first pour. The Capiaux was great but lacked some complexity and depth. Both WH wines were fabulous. Both had a characteristic RRV pinot nose that was intoxicating. Each swirl exhibited unfolding layers cherries and cola. The Alyce was slightly bitter and finish a bit short. The North Slope palate had finesse and delicacy and a medium-length finish. I tasted the South Slope a few weeks ago and the North Slope had a more expressive nose. Ranking them, it's: North, South, Alyce. We all kept going back to the North Slope and it was the only one completely consumed. For both of them, at $36 it's not a steal but a good value relative to other producers in the region with similar PN profiles that I adore like Williams Selyem and Dehlinger. It will be interesting to see how the Chasseur Holder and Sexton perform of the same vintage (they are $10 and $15 more expensive).

Oooh yeah I was apprehensive on day one because it wasnt giving much but day two...Big nose of crushed cherries, a little cola a hint of mint. The palate is medium to full bodied and brimming with ripe cherries, a little cinnamon and a lot of cleansing acidity. The acidity needs to tone down a bit for the fruit to blossom but I am very happy to own a half a case of this stuff, may be as good as the 04 in a year or two. Delicious.
