Inky dark purple, ripe cherries, iodine. Dusty dry, medium fruit, tart lemon zest, pomegranate, cherry. Light body with fresh mouthfeel, nice acid, light tannin balance. Good food wine. Much better on night two, just a little initial bitter detracts out of the gate, but diminishes and is not offensive. It keeps getting better, a little pine and iodine tonight with a hint Brett that is small enough to give more complexity. Further reasons to not drink before it's time. Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh! And I'm not just saying that because we've just passed National Pirate Day. I should have checked my earlier notes. I had a tag on this where I wrote drink by 2012. It needs 2 more years as I suggested in a previous note. Opened and let breathe for 1/2 hour on day one with no decant. It started out wicked, wicked hot (that is Boston-based wine lingo for my friends in Cali). After an hour it had smoothed to nice notes of cherry-flavored liquorice, tobacco, wet dirt and light oak. BUT, on Day Two, my word, the thing had changed. It had an expressive finish, a bit of lemon, flower notes and just a tiny hint of oak and menthol. It was really wonderful and easily a 91-92. And also, unfortunately, my last bottle. I'll be on the look out for more.

Much better tasting than our previous two bottles and more like the wine we tasted and enjoyed at the Vietti winery. There was a richness, depth, and clarity here of dark plums and cherries.

Such a tasty Barbera, and alas my final one of this. Great nose with clove, red cherry, roasted thyme, violets, cardamon. Good body with lots of verve on the palate carrying long bright cherry/berry flavor, touches of earth and spice. A bit of sweet tannins hold it together on the back end. Day 1 89+, Day 2 90.

A suave and polished Barbera. Decanted. Black fruits and graphite with a nice floral note. Smooth, slightly rich, with similar flavors that are nicely delineated and polished very light chalky tannins that coat the mouth and add structure and good lift that adds freshness. With a little time it all gets deeper, black currants and just a hint of rhubarb emerge, and the wine fleshes out a bit. This is great stuff. I just bought 6 bottles and will take a little time with this.

Dark red color with purple hints. Currant, licorice, plum, and spice on the nose. Sweet licorice and currant notes with a bay and lavender spice element that leads into a medium finish with some tobacco elements. A pretty, easy-going wine that complements cuisine inspired by Northern Italy. Drink.

Pretty serious wine, especially for $15. Dense with good acid and some deep dark notes. I think this could use a couple of years of bottle age. For the price, a great wine to have around any time. B/B-

A solid, well-balanced Barbera and a good price point. As noted by others, definitely a food wine. The acid and tannins are made for italian red sauce and cheese dishes (as a Barbera should do). I did not score but definitely a high 80"s caliber wine. Didn't give me any wow factor that would typically put a wine at 90 or above.

It's not that often that I save half a bottle of barbera for over 24 hours but in this case I'm glad I did.
This bottle showed a nose of red fruits, dark chocolate, herbs and a bit of undergrowth. On the palate, cherry fruit played a sweet and sour act yet through it all and to the finish, the wine stayed remarkably fresh and juicy.
This was a little one dimensional past the nose, but highly enjoyable, all the same.

Enjoyable wine, and for $18 would probably buy again. First impression is the dominant tartness and acidity, which takes awhile to become accustomed to before we really appreciated the fruit taste and really nice feel. Random note: picked up a bit of almond on a later sip, then ate an almond, and then agreed with myself.

Excellent food wine due to its fruit forward profile with nice acids up front and mid-palate and smooth soft tannins at the finish. Still getting that creamy cola on the nose along with red fruits and some pepper. Taste is simple but delicious tangy cherry with a little extracted darker fruit and some mild spices.

This wine showed much darker on the nose than the last performance with blackberry, barnyard, musk and a hint of black pepper. Pop and pour thru Nuance Wine Finer. Dark purple color. Raspberry, maybe some cranberry, and floral notes on the nose. The color is a deep reddish purple. On the nose I found red fruit with floral notes, cedar and a slight funk of undergrowth. A lively expression on the tongue as it's brisk acidity makes the mouth water yet bombards it with sour cherry fruit. Juicy cranberry on the finish which stays fresh for what seems like a minute. This is text book Barbera at a great price.

Really enjoyed this wine. Nose offers aromas of vanilla and ripe fruit that are right there on the palate. Nice interplay of dark cherries and cranberries, with just the right amount of sweet baking spices and grilled herbs. Well balanced from beginning to end with a fairly long finish, this drinks well with food or on its own. Would recommend.

Very dense purple garnet color, Nearly opaque. Nose of floral violet, dark cherries, woody herbs, and earth. This wine took time to open up. On the palate it turned rather fruit forward that favored more dark berry fruit. Good acid levels and tannin attack to compete with food. Paired nicely with penne alla vodka. This is wine has rustic quality to it yet delivers the qualities one hopes for in wine. Nicely balanced and decent finish. Excellent wine for the price point.. I would drink or hold for up to 3 years. And will grab some more this bargain

Pretty floral nose with cherries and fresh cedar. The palate shows a fuller body than my memory of the last bottle with more cherry fruit, christmas spice and a nice fresh finish. Dark red color with purple notes. Aromas of violets, cherries, and thyme. On the palate, this shows rich red fruits, some spice, a very strong floral element that carries through a medium-long finish, and a bit of sweet earth. Good now but should develop. Drink or hold.

Needs significant time to open. Medium-dark color. Fairly limited aromatically but flavorful. Pretty basic red wine flavors. A little tart. Medium-high acidity. A little harsh on the finish, less so when consumed with pasta Bolognese. I'd expect this to soften and improve with age.
Excellent food wine. Nose is fabulous with a creamy cola flavor followed up by a hint of pepper and sandalwood. On the palate taste is tangy cherry up front followed by some extracted fruit. Mid palate has nice great acidity. Nice silky tannins finish it off. We paired this with turkey and it really complimented the meal.

I'm with jwobkk on this one in that I'm a big fan of Vietti as a producer - haven't met one of their wines I didn't like. Tart cherry, herbs and pepper, with a very broad mid-palete, great acidity and mid-length finish. Looking forward to getting more of this for the cellar. On a side note, doesn't pair well with Girl Scout Thin Mints cookies...although I'm perfectly fine eating and drinking them separately.
Very dark red color with purple hints at the core. Nearly opaque. Violets, cherries, red pepper, and thyme on the nose. Initially rather chewy and tannic with a sweet and sour cherry core that has some violet notes integrated into it. Very ripe and polished once the initial structure subsides a bit. As others have noted, red sauced foods help this out. The finish shows some heat. An interesting fusion of rusticity and polish. Enjoyable with central and northern Italian cuisine. Drink or hold.

A very pretty wine and a text book example of barbera. The nose is full of cherry, cedar, red licorice, cedar and undergrowth. The palate shows a very focused acidity with cherry fruit, clove and bitters. The finish is fresh with tongue curling acidity. Simple, unpretentious and just right for a plate of pasta with red sauce.

Cherry, oak and clove on the nose. The amount of oak present it was a bit of a surprise to me. On the palette it was enjoyable and simple. Its acidity asked for the wine to be accompanied by food. Enjoyable unsophisticated wine.

Fairly dark color. Really like the nose where I get a creamy cola, red fruit and then the hints of oak. Taste is a little bit of a let down in that where there is some nicely muted tangy cherry up front followed by a bit of plum and some mild spice, it just fades away quicker than it should.

Right out of bottle, big fruit and acid forward w good tannins. Then poured through Nuance Wine Finer to open the wine... wow. Currant, black raspberry, cherry flavors, quite earthy, with some really nice black pepper spice and some deep, woody tannin. Solid 90. The fruit continues to give from this vintage. Not that complex, but enjoyable with or without food. At this price point you cannot go wrong. love this wine and will definitely get more.

Not sure if my bottles were flawed. They didn't taste oxidized. However, they were very cloudy. Big, bold flavors which surprised me for a Barbera. Withholding rating.

This wine is so very good. Lovely earthy nose. Medium in weight. Tastes great with or without food. Great fruit, minerals and earth. Tons of complexity and finish. One of the best QPR Italian wines on the market. Love Vietti.

This is a great drinking barbera that's juicy with brisk acidity but simple yet everything you want from an unassuming wine.

2/28/2010 - fredb Likes this wine:
Very dark red color with purple hints at the core. Nearly opaque. Violets, cherries, red pepper, and thyme on the nose. Initially rather chewy and tannic with a sweet and sour cherry core that has some violet notes integrated into it. Very ripe and polished once the initial structure subsides a bit. As others have noted, red sauced foods help this out. The finish shows some heat. An interesting fusion of rusticity and polish. Enjoyable with central and northern Italian cuisine. Drink or hold.

Nice wine. Fruity but with good acidity. Paired well with mushroom and sausage pasta. I don't drink much Barbera so have very little frame of reference for evaluating it vis-a-vis peer group wines. Definitely worth the $16 I paid for it.

Consumed over three nights. Purple. Muted nose of dark fruit. Acid and cherry on the palate. Not complex. medium bodied. medium finish, but the acid remains. I've never had a barbera I've loved. this was about as good as they've been. Pleasant. Not exciting.

Just OK. Starts out really nice with big cherry fruit with soft tannins and relatively low acidity. However, as stated in another note, it fades fast and you are left with rather flat juice comparatively.

Fairly dark color. Really like the nose where I get a creamy cola, red fruit and then the hints of oak. Taste is a little bit of a let down in that where there is some nicely muted tangy cherry up front followed by a bit of plum and some mild spice, it just fades away quicker than it should.

Then poured through Nuance Wine Finer to open the wine...
wow. Currant, black raspberry, cherry flavors, quite earthy, with some really nice black pepper spice and some deep, woody tannin.
Definitely a wine to have with food...had with chicken cacciatore and it set it off just right. for under $20, this is a nice wine. one that wil should age another 3 yrs or so...

Predominate cherry fruit with some raspberry and currant notes as well, on a medium bodied frame and medium to high acidity. Some earthiness, and was a little flat in the middle and at the end.
