Small pour. Really quite ready on the nose. Quite tertiary. Elegant on the palate with good length but here, too, quite fully developed. On this showing reassuringly good if not compelling and indicating there is no need to wait longer on these.

Very good showing. same bottle as Nutty08. This was PnP in a restaurant out of Conterno stems.
Youthful color, fairly dark with minimal bricking. Quite a bit of extraction but it's held up nicely. Dark fruited (blackberry, raspberry) with plenty of tertiary development on the palate, but I think the lesson here is in ripeness and extraction. I'm told it was Benjamin Leroux's first vintage, whose wines I enjoy. Good showing.

Large scaled, dense and dark fruited Burgundy. There's plenty of structure here, but with air comes into balance and shows some delineation. Still showing very young and considerable tannin.

Coravin 150ml: Right after opening mainly ripe plum in the nose and very thin on the palate. 30 min later smell of iron and wood and a little more body, still high acidity (too high) with a nice liquorice finish. No tannins. Expected more. Did not age well.

Decanted for two hours. A little rustic on the nose but not in a bad way. Full bodied, still notable tannins. Very good energy ont the palate. Red cherry, iron and earth come through in a lovely inner core. Around the edges though this is a little rustic. Probably needs more time.

{Tasted with DH and DE over dinner; came from DE's cellar} Tasted with 1996 Jadot Clos des Ursules and the 1996 Armand Clos des Epeneaux. Obviously this wine similar to the other Epeneaux. Qualitatively all 3 wines were about the same. This wine a little more aromatic flair than the others, and (if pressed) could say the typically uncompromising structure of this wine was less aggressive than the two '96s. Getting close to maturity but will age for decades. Excellent length and palate, sophisticated structure, opened and improved over the entire course of dinner. In one of Jasper Morris' 2018 notes he describes how the fruit in this wine became more youthful the longer it was open, and that rings true.

Wine swap with PH. Drank in Grassl Cru.. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with thin garnet edge. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, sous bois, dried herbs, leather, indistinct minerals, dark red cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, sous bois, mint, sweet dried herbs, dark spice, leather meat, nicely ripe dark red cherries, and almost a bit of mocha integrated oak floating around somewhere. Long structured velvety textured finish. Very good quality. Power with control and a certain kind of elegance to it. Fruits still feel quite fresh even though there are tertiary notes. Methinks this will still carry on developing for another 5+ years.

Decanted 3 hours. No fun at open other than some red fruits on the nose. 3 hour decant opens this up but still feels a little muddy in color and on the palate. Just does not sing Burgundy to me. Maybe more time will help and I realize it is a 1999 but still just may not be for me as gets a bit too close to a Northern Rhone but then underdelivers vs. a great Northern Rhone...A-?
Just entering its drinking window. Still rather primary, little sign of bricking. I double decanted which really helped it open up. If you have this wine there is no rush to drink. Superb.

Typically a wine I adore. This had a knockout nose of rich red fruits along with a soft and supple texture. However, the fill was down a couple cm and the cork was totally soaked through. The wine was coming apart a bit in the glass. Was good and drinkable but not what this wine should be - bottle may have had some heat damage.

Nose: Abundant cherry and redcurrant straight out of the glass; on palate initially quite tart. Decanted for approx. 1 hr. and thereafter this really began to sing. Voluptuous, still tannic. Left a long, licorice-y aftertaste. Very good.

Some bricking on the edges of the glass. Sweet tobacco and faint red fruit on the nose. Half an hour later faint black fruit emerged on the nose. The palate was medium bodied with good acidity, a medium-long finish, and tannins that were still fairly aggressive - suggesting that this still needs more time. Not much in the way of tertiary flavors. Lacks the complexity I expected from a heralded producer and vineyard in Pommard.
Gathering with Burgundy Lovers: Ripe, mellow blue and red fruits with earth, intense wood spice and just touch of Sous bois. High acidity, mellow ripe fruits, firm tannin and some oak here. Nice grip on the palate. Powerful, mouth coating and very Long. A touch edgy. This has just entering the secondary stage, approachable but not really into the drinking window yet, the power of 99. Curious to know how is the interaction of the fruits and tannin 5-10yrs down the road.

Decanted and consumed over 2 hours. Continuously improved with air. Aromas of red fruits and earth. Flavors of red fruits, but dominated by earth. A little rustic. Minimal complexity/short finish. Enough acidity to hold on, but no upside from here.

In Jeroboam. Decanted for 4 hrs and consumed in 3 hrs. Spicy aromas and still plenty of tannins. Rich round with chocolate and full-body fruits. Too young for now. Let's put aside 5-10 yrs for regular size and 10-15 yrs for larger format.
PnP This Pommard is still very youthful. Initially closed but opens up with red fruits. Medium to full bodied with fine tannins. Elegant but not showing well yet. Needs more time but plenty of potential.

This wine is very difficult to rate. My previous experiences with vintage 2005 (3 bottles popped in different year) is not inspiring at all. Given it as blind tasting, I would not guess its origin of burgundy. It lacked the aroma with very thick and firm taste. This time the 1999 vintage is much better. It began to show some fruit and flower in the nose with softened taste in a good way. The problem is I don' t know the exact drinking window and this wine is not cheap. From a hind view I quite regret buying them.

Decanted 2 hours. On open, the age is starting to show in the color but this is muted and not giving much - but you can tell the fruit is there. At 1.5 hours this shows a lot of tannin. At 2.5 hours it is showing nice red fruit, great concentration, and tannins are still prominent but enjoyable with meat for dinner. I like this quite a bit, just wish it were mature now vs. needing a few more years. A-/A

Very deep color and muted nose to begin, after 30 minutes brooding nose of black cherry and earth. Just on the edge of secondary stage. Sappy on the palate but not heavy, mouth coating tannins, very long finish. Many 99s are somewhat muted right now and interesting to revisit this again in a few years to see how it evolves.

Miscellaneous Wines from a France Trip-Burgundy, Alsace, and Paris; 4/20/2017-4/29/2017: A pristine bottle drunk in Pommard. Deep ruby almost to the rim, not crystal clear. Marvelous nose of soil, some char and bretty funk, and dark cherry behind it all. Big, structured, very animal, mineral wine that somehow holds the earthier elements in check. It takes a while, but sappier black and red fruit elements emerge. Great acidity, substantial tannins. Particularly for well stored, never disturbed bottles like this, either give it a good, long decant, or hold off for another 15 years. After having had mostly young, red fruited, silky reds over the past few days, this was quite a shock, but I really liked this completely serious, savory wine.
Six hours later, the fruit is much more vibrant-decant!!

This is very highly rated by burghound,94, but I couldn't get there.Have not had a Pommard for a long time but reminded how tannic they are , very un burgundy but a good wine nevertheless with deep colour , cherry, signs of age but not on the taste where the tannin is unresolved, will get there eventually , I hope as bought a doz at auction, and may then rate higher but may take 5 years or so.

Will the 1999 Burgundies ever be ready to drink? The nose is muted but with constant coaxing and swirling, it reveals after a while some earth and cherries. The color is dark with no bricking. On the palate the tannins are dry but one could sense the excellent fruit. A pity to open now, but how much patience can one have with the 1999? It will maybe take another decade or two before these are ready to drink.
DIY Holiday BYO Dinner (Amali in NYC): Interesting - this wine was almost spicy which I don't generally expect from a Pinot. Very bright fruits. Small pour and didn't get to see the evolution in the glass, but imagine it would be an interesting one to follow for an evening.

Drank at St George Bistro with bro. Decanted at the table. Expressive nose of earth & some red fruit. Tannins are resolved, and much of the formerly ripe red fruit has faded leaving a wine that has a distinct chalkiness and earthiness, showing nice complexity and length. Still some cherry remnants as well as spice and some forest floor. An interesting example of a nicely aged, mature Pommard that left us wanting more. Went very well with my duck dish.

A terrific wine that changed constantly over a few hours. Opened very expressive and full on the nose but tight and acidic on the palate. With air time, the nose gained an earthy complexity to complement the sweet fruit. The palate, now full of extract, has integrated a good bit but still seems somewhat coiled. Unlike the bottle in Paris, the examples from my cellar still need time. There is a lot to like in this powerful Pommard, but I think it will be even better in 2021. (93+)

This wine see-saws from great to average and we are starting to believe that its down to different bottles evolving faster than others in the case we got. The last one we had ( April 14 - Papies 93) was quite developed and giving. This bottle much like the one before ( Aug 13 - Papies 91) was a typical 1999 vintage wine, tight, full of core material but buttoned down and very youthful and easily to be had in 5yrs minimum. Most of the 1999s 1er+ we have tried are close to this, rich, bold, ripe but not very complex and expressive. Ah the mysteries of wine.. 91 on this occassion

I didn't know a pommard could be so powerful. Behind the power I thought to taste an older wine, because this bottle was very ripe and showed a whiff of sugar. Hefty nose with bitters in the bouquet and the taste. Good balance and long aftertaste.

(Blind tasting) Deep, dense nose. Dark fruit, pine cones. Light forest floor impression intermingles with animaly hints. Intense spicyness, bay leaves and a powerful ironlike minerality. Just about ready. Fullish, dense, concentrated palate. Lovely maturing hints of nuts, spices and forest floor. Even dark chocolate. Surprising to find plum fruit aroma in a Burgundy. Tannins resolved. Positively robust. Very good grip. Finish goes on and on. Blind tasted, this gave 2000 La Tache a match for it's sheer power and full body. It's also such a fine expression of the Pommard style. Has entered it's drinking window and probably can go on for 10+ years.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago IL): Lots of cherry, mostly red but with plenty of black, on nose and palate. Still firm and backward, the potential is clearly here but this still needs 5+ years in the cellar to really live up to what I think is its 93-94 point potential.

HDH Burgundy Auction (Chicago, IL): Sappy red and black fruit on the nose with a lot less of the earthy rusticity one might expect from a Pommard. This is a very big wine with a lot of ripe black fruit on the palate. It's very lush and just coats the palate. Coarser tannins, but that's really the only thing that gives a clue as to its terroir. Lots of fruit and structure, this ought to hold for a long, long time.

This is really still quite primary and also very rich and velvety with a deep core of cherry fruit. Loaded with flavor and quite concentrated, this is a big-boned Pinot with lots of minerals and a firm structure underneath. The finish shows some wood and mocha notes but in a good way and I really like this and it should age effortlessly. 93+

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Bowery Hotel - New York, NY): Tasting, brief note. All about red cherry, moderate power on nose, lots of power and density on palate. Still more front-and-center structure than I'd prefer for a wine at the age, but this is getting much closer to good balance vs last time tried 3 or 4 years ago. I'm now more optimistic.

A great bottle, opened and let to rest for 30 mins before serving. Open on the nose, strawberries, raspberries, light smoky edge, lightest touch of earth. Very open and beautiful on the nose. On the plate it carries on and the juicy ripe 1999 vintage really helps this wine giving it a good fruit core and excellent balance. The wine feels just entering its drinking window and definitely has a lot of life ahead. a touch on the dry side on the finish but a very very good wine. 93 easy. good life ahead.

I think this has great potential, but it was probably premature to open it now. It seemed shut down. It's a classic four square Pommard Epeneaux with very present chalky tannins, black fruit, earth and spice. It needs more time to come together and develop tertiary characteristics.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 3/21/2014-3/22/2014 (Chicago, IL): Intoxicating nose of sweet black cherries, burnt earth, brown spice, and a hint of smoked meat. There's a slight hint of oak. The palate is plenty soft and pliable now, though this still strikes me as a wound-up spring with more to give. Plenty of ripe cherries balanced by lovely acidity and a bit of the same burnt earth. Medium red with some slight bricking. Out of the bottle this was a bit tart but showing some dark fruit and I thought it might be ready to open up with some air. But after 30 minutes it closed down a bit and it took about 3 hours before it really was starting to show its stuff. But as it opened up, it also showed its tannin. So even though I really enjoyed it after a few hours of air, I feel it will be even more enjoyable in a few years, so will let the remaining bottles rest for a while longer. A-/A

(at Vin sur Vin – Paris) A great night for wines – this is one of my wines of the year. Deep red, rich and plush with all the red fruit, mushroom and deep wood accents you could ask for. Broad and deep impression without being overly heavy (it is a very full bodied Burgundy). The texture of this wine is profound. While the wine has a long way to go, it has certainly entered its prime time drinking window. Just don’t understand some of the negative comments – must be some significant bottle variation – as I would think this is a wine for all palate types. For those that bought early, this wine was a steal. (96)

Decanted and served. The colour is on the light red ride, shows little in terms of aging. The nose is full on strawberry, raspberry notes, very burgundian and open. Quite a bit of fruit on the palate, nice ripe tones, lush and with good length, no earth and on the primary side. Maybe the level of fruit takes away from the complexity and depth of this wine but still this is a very enjoyable wine and with pretty good life ahead of it.A touch dry on the finish. 92

Drank at Knightsbridge tasting table. Like grabbing a tiger by the tail, this was a monster of a wine. Tannic and intense with ripe red fruit flavors almost entirely primary. Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Double blind tasting. This showed very strangely. Very big fruit on both the nose and palate, but the fruit was more red cherry than I'd expect from this wine. Behind the fruit were layers upon layers of structure - lots of tannin and acidity that have built a very secure fortress around this wine's fruit today. The underlying fruit is very good and will last for a long time, but it was quite unclear to me when the structure will relinquish control. In other words, it's not clear if this will become more like its highly-rated 1990 counterpart which has not resolved into a great wine vs. the lesser-rated 1993 Epeneaux which is clearly emerging as great. Time will tell, but not before 2020 or 2025.

Served after an extensive tasting of Beaune red this wine outshone almost all other wines. Perhaps only Lafarge Clos des Chenes 2002 and Angerville Clos des Ducs 2002 could hold their own alongside this great wine. This is still young, but lovely drinking now. I'm going to try and lay my hands on a few bottles.

Burgundy 2011 Day 4: The Big Dinner aka Singapore Night in Burgundy (Baubigny): Far, far too young even after a longish decanting. The nose was pleasant, but a little tight, with some woody, spicy notes wed to maturing earth and mushroom scents and a nice amount of dark cherries and berries. The palate, on the other hand, was a study in contrast. It was very nice on first sip - rich, deep, with tons of material and lovely pure dark fruit all held in good balance. Past the mid-palate though, it went into shut-down mode, with the fruit clenching up and too much woody oak at the end, with flavours of wood spice and tannins swimming around the mouth. There is obviosusly real quality of fruit here and solid structure, but it needs a lot of time yet. This is one 1999 that shows no indication of coming ready any time soon. If I had any in my cellar, I would keep it locked up for another 4-5 years at least.

I have had this wine before and loved the high-toned red fruit structure, power and length, but this one was strange, seemed reduced and just didn't come out to play. After an hour or two decanted the wine simply faded to a light wine with hints of sour cherry.

The palate was medium bodied with good acidity, a medium-long finish, and tannins that were still fairly aggressive - suggesting that this still needs more time. Not much in the way of tertiary flavors. Lacks the complexity I expected from a heralded producer and vineyard in Pommard.

Curious to know how is the interaction of the fruits and tannin 5-10yrs down the road.

Deep, dense nose.
