  • Mmm, this is very pretty and well balanced. The initially mushroom-dominated nose blows off to shows leather, sandalwood, pine and a hint of tobacco. The palate is lean but pretty, wonderfully dry and delicate yet with lovely sweetness in the mid-palate. This is almost Burgundian in proportion with nice acids and pretty cherry fruit. The finish is still youthful with plenty of tannin, but this is clearly starting to gain some nuance. This wine, while hardly a blockbuster, is a lovely reminder of why I enjoy Brunello (which was really the appellation which got me hooked on collecting in the first place some 6 years ago).

  • Opened this to have with pizza/calzone on Mother's Day. Earthy, mushroomy, bit o' funk, leathery, and some bright fruit. On the palate this is fairly vibrant and acidic with a fair bit of tannin and some drying on the finish. For an off vintage, this is powerful and elegant stuff. However, the acid is definitely a bit overwhelming relative to the rest, so that keeps this below 90 points. With food, this is heavenly stuff and a killer $30 bottle of wine.
