The 1929 Ducru-Beaucaillou still retains quite a lot of powdery, dried raspberry fruit, Christmas-cake like spices, cardamom, and tea. Incredibly similar to another bottle opened, this was if anything a hair better preserved - though without doubt just as fine-boned. Unlike the last bottle, almost no volatile acidity. Opened, decanter, and followed over 3 hours it was extraordinary to see this wine not only hold up, but actually pull itself together a bit after about 30 minutes. From 750, mid shoulder fill.

Ducru Beaucaillou - 90 year Retrospective (Boston Harbor Hotel): Started out with volatile acidity and some oxidative notes, but as these blew off it gave way to a light fine and powdery palate of a wine in its twilight. Nose: Raspberry, sweet orange peel, spice, sous-bois and bits of cherry. Palate: Just light and acid driven with powdery tannin delivering the nuances of fruit, spice and tertiary wood.

90 years of Ducru Beaucaillou: This starts off a little volatile but with 20-30 minutes sheds those notes and the majesty of fully resolved, 90 year old claret is clear. Raspberry, red currant, cedar, ginger, sous-bois - an ephemeral, powdery melange of so many lovely, delicate things. It's simply from another world, another time. And all the more special to open this for Bruno Borie. From 750, perfect cork, upper shoulder.

Consumption date approximate - year definite. Brought a pair in the late 80s as part of distressed stock sale. First bottle was interesting but clearly ancient in character and faded fast. The second was as fine a bottle of claret as I have ever drunk - and still had time on its side. Too long ago to give an actual tasting note. Caveat emptor at this age - but worth taking a punt if you can lay your hands on a bottle.
