Quite surprising to me. Had a nose I associate with old wines that my guest described as "musty." To be expected, I guess. It was properly cellared since I bought it at the winery, but Zins aren't known for aging. The cork was still good. The surprise came on the palate. Lots of Zin fruit, good acid, not much else. The fruitiness got even stronger with air exposure. After about an hour, except for the acid, to me it was a typical overly fruity characterless California Zin. 34 years old and getting younger with time in the glass. Wierd.

Blind Tasting 1978 - 1990 Ridge Zinfandels (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Bricking, clear meniscus. Strange, musty nose, cherry cough syrup with a bit of v.a. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Leather and tannins with very little fruit, maybe a touch of cranberry. This bottle has dried up. (my 5th, group's 5th)

Blind Tasting 1980-87 Ridge Geyservilles (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Musty, v.a., spirity, tequila nose. Lots of disagreement over whether this was corked or oxidized, I actually thought it was both. (my 8th, group's 8th)
