Lunch Bistro Rex: Opened 4-5 hours before service and slow-ox, this was unimpressive on opening but was transformed in the glass later. Medium scarlet red in colour and no more than medium body, Merlot fruit, violets, red fruits and coffee on the nose with a suave creamy palate and a long finish. This would have paired well with the Albert Morot, as the wine is quite Burgundian in structure. Consistent with the bottle from a few years ago and delicious but not for keeping 18.5.

Debate, Chateau Margaux or Palmer. I was right onto Palmer and stuck with it🤗 @Riaan was onto CM.
The wine is so Burgundian it is fine, ripe and good length. Didn’t have the CM length for me. Absolutely on apex now and you could see with air that it lost a little freshness.
I would not wait on this and rather drink up.

Short notes. Drinking beautifully. Fully integrated top notch Bordeaux as you would expect them to be. Life is full of surprises: 1983 is supposed to be a better year for Margaux so i was not expecting this Palmer to be that strong (and was disappointed by a Margaux 1983 a couple of years back), so overall a good surprise. Evolved quite quickly so would not recommend to decant.

Sometimes when one meets their wine hero.. its as special as one expects it to be.
In this case, this Palmer 1982 was not only beautiful and memorable, but it kept evolving over the night. Ripe blackberries and cassis, with sweetness which keeps developing over the night.
Incredibly the acidity (Medium+) kept this so lively. Such staying power.. despite this being a wine of over 40 years. After 4 hours of air in our glasses and in the bottle, this Palmer 82 gained better density and more coffee aromatics too.
Château Palmer is actually a 3rd growth, but in some vintages it would clearly give the 1st Growths a run for their money. In this 1982 vintage.. Circa 140,000 bottles were produced. 47% Cab, 47% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot
It seems that other than Chateau Margaux, the 1982 Palmer is the strongest wine from what was the weakest appellation of the vintage, Margaux.
At this point in Palmer's history, the estate was being run by Peter Sichel, and was under the ownership of, as today, the Sichel and Mahler-Besse families.
Regarding this legendary 1982 vintage.. Heatwave in July, and the hot dry harvest (although with a damp August and early September) suited these grapes.
Thanks RN for not only spoiling us with the home cooked lamb and steaks, but for sharing this gem!

Medium scarlet red in colour and no more than medium body. Immediately floral on opening, with lavender, violets and plummy red fruits. Supremely elegant, with a suave palate and a long finish. Not as punchy as some other 1982's BDX, and this bottle probably better a decade ago, but a beautiful wine and very Palmer 18.75

Rarely get to try this wine and yet I always am in love with it. Palmer definitely hits above its punching weight and this was no different. It had some stiff competition in the line-up - there was a 66 of Palmer that really made me take notice. Still just a lovely wine with great structure and power and balance and even a touch of finesse. Lovely.

Ornellaia Dinner (Stefani Prime - Lincolnwood IL): Alongside the 1962. Aging gracefully with as much earth & mushroom as black fruit, this is another 1982 holding on nicely (enough) but with its best years in the past.

Top Shoulder fill, Cork almost saturated with fungus on the top after removal of the capsule. Still, almost intact cork removal with Durand but small piece broke, minimal into the wine and then immediate decant. Beautiful color of light garnet with light orange rim, much less opaque than prior bottles from long ago, but similar to more recent ones. Perfectly stored by dad in his cellar and opened in CB for lunch. Did not fade after open on sipping to the end for several hours. Incredible aromas of flowers, dry leaves and smoked meat which is super complex with dry red fruit in and out. Incredibly lush mouth feel, much denser on the mid palate than the appearance would predict. Tannis fully integrated and while lacking a bit in fruit, it has enough red fruit, grip and acidity to make the finish go on for long enough and the flavor is delightful. Moderate coarse sediment stuck to bottle at top and on sides. Fine sediment in the bottom. Just sensational if you love old style Margaux. Not as robust perhaps faded slightly more as compared to some of the other 1982 Bordeaux wines at this stage but still so lovely. Great with goat cheese at the end. Should stay at this level for a while but drink now, it's not likely to improve and expect some bottle variation even with perfect cellaring. Very fun to drink. 93

Very very relaxed, but perhaps a bit too relaxed! I was expecting more. Vibrant colour, fresh nose, milky taste, pretty long, but not as exciting or sustained as others from 82. But like other 82s it is tasting remarkably young still. I doubt that it will improve; I think its relative reticence is how it is. What an extraordinarily wonderful vintage 82 is.

Wine level below the neck and crumbling cork. Slight garnet color. Graphite aroma and taste with stewed fruit and toast. Opened 45 minutes after decanting. Clearly on the downside.

82 Bordeaux Dinner @ Union Square Cafe all wines were purchased on release and double decanteted at 4:00.
Second Flight - Gruaud Larose, Leoville las Cases, Ducru Beaucaillou, Palmer
Palmer was in a great place, beautiful nose of red fruit, with ……. the 82 is lighter and brighter than I expected, this wine had a Margaux elegance that stood out from the flight reflecting more of the richness of the vintage than the power of 83 or 89 Palmer, my WOTF

Stunning. At the end of the maturity plateau, this sweet, elegant wine smells like a fruit and floral factory with a fresh sod floor. Medium bodied. A wine to drink soon as it begins to tail off big time after 60 minutes. While it’s on, it’s singing. Way better than the previous bottle. (95) Drink up.

RZ's Bordeaux Seconds (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Another incredibly generous bottle from I. Lovely - well put together claret. Apparently Palmer notoriously over cropped in 82 and I could feel it. An education in the palmer style, and on most Mondays would be the best wine you drink…but today is not a normal Monday.

From memory, this is firing on all cylinders with secondary and tertiary notes. It is a wonderful mature Palmer but without the intricacies to take it to the level of the 1983 and 1989 and some of the post millennial vintages.

Bought on E-bay about 20 years ago. Level top shoulder. Opened three hours before drinking without decanting. As a meal accompaniment to a really fantastic Iberian black pork fillet. Colour light Bordeaux red with brick reflections, slightly cloudy. Intense nose, fine stinker, barnyard fits very good and classic Margaux aromas. Velvety and soft on the palate, good fruit primarily cherries and a touch of raspberries, Burgundy, fine and elegant, medium finish. There is a lack of depth and complexity for a really great wine. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun and a great drinking experience, 94 pts.

Impromptu dinner and tasting with our close friends (Our Farm in NJ): In my cellar since release. Decanted at 5pm. Incredibly pristine and fresh for a 38 year old bottle of wine, not a bit of bricking and translucent medium garnet. Supremely balanced and elegant with great mouth feel and texture. So feminine, with light florals, more red fruit and plenty of earthy mushroom, cherry, black raspberry, red currant, gamey savory elements and a very long finish. This got better and better with more air over 6+ hours. Perfect with fire grilled NY strips steaks.

After the 1970, the first thing that came to mind for 82 was rustic. It was evident that there was a big difference between the 2. It had riper black fruits and a smoky element. The aroma of cedar wood was also very apparent. The palate was quite straightforward, dark fruits and woody with fine tannins and acidity. Bottle was not as exciting as I hoped. more tasting note in finewines.com.sg

Purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this particular bottle showed beautifully. A blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the wine was decanted off of its substantial sediment and serially tasted over several hours. Medium garnet with bricking at the rim, it opens over the first 30-60 minutes to reveal a complex package of red plum and currant fruit that is accented with notes of clove, leather, lavender, cigar box and cocoa. Medium-bodied and with good acidity, it maintains a silky texture by virtue of its melted tannins, well-woven alcohol and fully integrated oak. Solid in the middle and finishing long, this fully mature Bordeaux is pure elegance. With this wine approaching 40 years of age, there will undoubtedly be substantial bottle variation; despite this, those holding well-cellared specimens have reason to be optimistic. Drink now.

2019 Palmerathon: This is in such a beautiful place now, full of fat, soft textures, and aromas of roses, violets, redcurrant, and cedar. Luscious but not exactly rich. Elegant, missing the tannic structure or sheer presence of the 1983 and 1989. This still occupies an important position in the Pantheon of 1980s Palmer. A gorgeous drink.

Open this on April 14th 2019 without knowing what we were doing. Bottle was bequeathed by Casey Jennings and had no label. Serendipitously this was a big day for my brother Steve Roger, when Tiger Woods took the 2019 Masters Championship after 22 years since his first! Lucky for my husband who's not a fan, the Chateaux was "Palmer"- line Arnold! Dusty tannins, of which I knew nothing about until this moment but had read about in tasting notes, with licorice upfront followed by Cherry Bomb fruit notes on the tongue. Lovely with creamy strong Cheese's of garlic and herbs and certainly a celebration to be had. That said, would have preferred their $390 to $3,100 valuation that it got on this site if we had known!! Shut the front door...
Wow was this wine rocking. Better than the Lafites that we had alongside it. I didn't take any detailed notes on this so going from memory after what was a long day of wine, but I remember this making me stop and take a step back it was that good. Still I think quite fresh and younger. Fruit intact. Wine well put together. I will definitely be seeking more of these out.

Opened this bottle of my birth year on my birthday. Sommelier had some problems opening the bottle, which resulted in the cork breaking. Wine was filtered into a decanter which still appeared dark with no signs of ageing.
The immediate nose was closed and muted on the palate, finishing with a tinge of iron.
After an hour in the decanter, the wine started to awaken. The nose was a combination of fresh berries and ripe plums. On the palate, the tannins were well integrated but finish was amazingly long. Towards the end, some hints of mocha and tobacco came through. There was still good acidity and power, which masked the fact that the wine is already 36years young.
I think the wine could have benefitted from a further hour or two of decanting, but nevertheless, there is still a good decade or so ahead.

Clear edge, browning to a brick core. Clean on the nose. Dried red fruit. Raisin, tobacco, and a touch of iron. On the palate this is good to go. Seamless. Meaty (iron), good fruit, but this is starting to fade. Would drink now and over the next 5 or so years.

Drank on my 37th birthday alongside an ‘82 Ducru Beaucaillou and came a marginal second on the day. That’s not to say it wasn’t wonderful - silky, elegant and with amazing purity for a wine approaching 40 (I wish I could say the same for myself). I would not hesitate to drink again, but would be interested in trying the ‘83 Palmer one day to compare them.
The most impressive thing was I still had a glass in the decanter the next day and, despite having faded a little, the quality and refinement of the wine welcomed me into the day and helped me through the fug I encountered coming out of my slumber.

Superb bottle, which was lucky since I bought it at an auction years ago. Drank with friends at 67PM - one of which was younger than the bottle (!) This was barely bricking at the edges, nothing the least bit tired about it, superbly balanced with elegance and intensity, would have been fine to drink in another 10 years. Sad I don't have another.

Château Palmer vertical tasting dinner (3030 Ocean, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): This wine was a bit of a disappointment, and paled next to the 1983 Palmer. It started out with a nice mature nose (though somewhat shy and reticent), with a little funk to go along with the red fruits, old library books, and roses. It fell flat on the palate, lacking some depth in the mid-palate. The tannins were also a bit dusty and drying, sometimes dominating the fruit at the finish. The acidity was overwhelming the fruit as well. This is likely just an off-bottle, as other bottles from this case have shown much better.

Château Palmer Vertical: Thanks to DrinkBordeaux for adding this vintage of Palmer for the vertical since I don't have any and haven't tasted it in years, frightened by its mediocre reputation. If this bottle is representative, it is deserved. Shockingly austere and charmless for an '82, a vintage which has produced many voluptuous examples which have evolved very well. Even though our sample of the '83 was not pristine it was clear that the younger of the pair was more successful. The '82 seems unripe and even a touch green.
Double decanted for sediment at home prior to taking it to the restaurant, but didn't give it time to air. It was only in the decanter long enough to rinse leftover sediment out of the bottle, then back in again. I was a bit concerned, as the cork completely disintegrated as I was extracting it, and the nose was fairly muted at home. Once it was poured, it started to open up, and about half an hour in, it really began to sing. Dark fruits and graphite for days. By the end of the bottle, it was stunning.

A stunning bottle, the third or fourth time I have had the chance to drink Palmer '82 over the last 3 years and this bottle was exceptional and by far the most impressive and youthful. Mature but still beautifully fresh and perfumed, the texture could not have been more enticing, beautifully soft and caressed the palate. Far more energy and intensity than any other bottles tasted recently.

From magnum, the last bottle of 82 Palmer in our cellar. I agree with many others - this has been past its prime for a while, so I'd encourage folks to drink up. I really think it's in a slow decline. Interestingly, this had a funk element that for me rarely shows up in Palmer. Good juice, a wine I've always liked, even if its not a rock star, but it was time to finish them off.

Château Palmer Vertical: Lovely but curious nose with eucalyptus, mint, and menthol, on top of cool blueberry fruit. Good earth driven tones, damp soil. Some chai. Palate is farther advanced than one would hope for out of an '82. Red berry fruit is yielding to a more tertiary maple.

The 1982 Palmer for me is a wine that is on its fully maturity plateau for some time already with this last 2-3 bottles showing signs of slightly past it's prime. Very fine and elegant nose beautiful tertiary, cedar, a slight mint/eucalyptus touch, but such an inviting floral characteristic with violets, roses that in my opinion is a registered mark from great Palmer. The palate is very fine, delicate, completely balanced offering an outstanding classy wine, but time to drink!

The bouquet of this wine is really fabulous and complex with beautiful oak, cedar, cigar box, sweet spices, autumn impressions and some truffle. On the palate beautifully soft with still some good red fruits, coffee and autumn impressions. All very refined, smooth and integrated. Good acidity and a touch of pleasant sweetness. Completely soft and integrated tannin which is showing a bit of age and is a bit drying, but that doesn’t really bother me because everything is so harmonious , complex and refined. Completely ready now and probably wise not to wait much longer. (However a few years more at this age, if kept in a perfect cellar, will most likely not hurt either.)
La Trompette, Chateau Palmer dinner 12.11.2015. Palmer's knuckles are often wrapped for its high yields in what is the most renowned vintage of the Left Bank. Tonight, Palmer ought to be proud. Cassis, cedar notes, short to mid-length acidity. A fantastic bottle, again, it was cellared well and unmoved since the purchase at en primeur 30+ years ago. The '82 is very flattering, charming and full frontal, compared to the '83 which was shy to start, oozed confidence and excelled to win WOTN.

1982, '89 and '90 Left-Bank Bordeaux Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): A delicious Palmer, drinking at its absolute peak – this really brought a smile to my face. The nose was a little less showy off the bat than either the 1990 Haut-Brion or the 1989 Pichon Lalande that shared its flight, but there was a wonderfully subtle charm about it, with gentle wafts of tobacco and spice, dried flowers and herbs, a touch of garrigue and lavender, all floating around a core of cassis, earth and cedar wood. Lovely stuff. It was on the palate where the wine really stole the show though. This was just at a beautiful place – it was soft and round and velvety, almost melting in the mouth with sweet notes of cassis and plums and fleshy blackberries all seamlessly integrated with a gentle acidity and silky, barely there tannins. Gorgeous stuff – refined, elegant, really genteel; maybe lacking some of the sheer power and depth of the other wines on show, yet having a quiet strength and presence that kept it from being insubstantial. “Seductive without quite being feminine”, I wrote on my notes. Lovely finish too, with a whisper of sweet spice emerging amidst the fleshy fruit. A perfect example of a wine at its absolute peak - this was singing on the night.

Double decanted two hours in advance. The nose offers captivating tertiary aromas such as seaweed, salty seashells, caramel, cigar box, bell pepper, green mint, and gravel. But even if the wine is fully developed, there's still enough sweet currant/plum fruit left, a really elegant structure, and a texture fine as silk. Not overly acidic, neither the least flat, and no drying tendencies on the finish. Drinks like a charm, and certainly has everyone around the table stunned. A perfect bottle of mature bordeaux.

Popped this to celebrate my wife's birthday at Il Lido. Lovely wine, though I wouldn't say it is outstanding to warrant a 95/100. Probably past its prime - lots of tertiary notes, and the fruits are fading. Elegant, earthy, melting tannins, and unmistakably Bordeaux.

It was funny, no sooner had Li Na won the Australian Open final than VK and PH showed up at our doorstep with a freshly opened bottle of this to celebrate. The nose, what struck me immediately was the nose -- pungent fruity floral spicy perfumed nose that was unlike anything I've ever come across. Nice medium body with decent complexity and a solid enough mid palate, but nothing that comes close to the nose. Interesting wine this -- 96 for the nose, 90 for everything else, so 93.

A wine overshadowed by the 83 but it is still rather good! Clear ruby, youthful appearance. The nose is immediately open and stunning. Acacia and honeysuckle, perfumed spices of Palmer ever present. Probably 95 on the nose! On the palate Otis mid-weight ( in a good way) as you are never going to get a massive and mammoth Palmer. Still fresh red and blackberry fruits and a nice balancing acidity to keep it all together and fresh. You want to keep drinking this...

Deep ruby color, little to no bricking, youthful appearance. Nose of barnyard and earth, with black fruit and leather. Flavor profile muted. Nose definitely better. If the palate was as good as the nose it would be 100 points but it was a bit short on the aftertaste and not as mouth filling as I wanted after smelling it. Velvety soft though and great flavors of earth, mushrooms, black currant, leather and blackberry. Plenty of life left.

Bordeaux v Burgundy III; 7/7/2012-7/9/2012 (The Square, London): Had a bottle of this a year ago and it was singing - this year to me it seemed more reticent and withdrawn, less overt and sexy. A Tribute to 30yrs of 1982 Left Bank Bordeaux (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Felt it needed decanting and we did for abt 1 hour. Good bottle just below neck. Brittle cork. Colour shows it age for sure. The nose points directly to a well mature bordeaux. Minty ( for us a signature of palmer) , herby with light earth. On the palate it feels it has seen better years and although nice to drink it feels a bit short and light on the density and depth. Still very nice but best to drink this sooner than later. 91 at best.

Well I have kept a case of these in my cellar for a long time. Just started to drink them two years ago. The first bottle was a wonderful surprise. Yougot the bouquet from across the room and after decanting it was showing well right away and continued to improve for an hour. The wine is fully matured and it has beautifully integrated oak and fruit character. Very smooth on the palate and wonderful nose with great depth changing from dark red fruits to cedar and then even subtler notes of leather and spice emrged. A pleasure to just inhale the aromas ever few minutes. The depth seemed to increase for the first 20 minutes or so and then tapered a bit but the palate did not waver. It was just a really special wine with a great steak. Perfect complement . Not sure how long it may stay at this plateau - but it has not disappointed or changed much over the last year.

Best of Bordeaux, Including 1966 Pichon Lalande (K&L Wines, Redwood City, California): Light and completely resolved. Faint floral perfume. Light, good remaining acidity. Faded fruit and flavors, thin feel, curious artificial sweetness sticks out right in the middle, medium to short finish. I must say that this is pretty bland and uninspiring for a great property from a heralded year. Not nearly in the same class as the best wines in the flight.

Decanted for sediment and immediately served. Aromas of dark berries and cherries were bursting from the wine as it was poured into the decanter. This is one of those wines where you could easily spend an hour with your nose happily buried in the glass. I didn't, but it certainly wouldn't have been a bad use of my time. Dark ruby in color with crystal clarity. Refined and elegant, it showed perfect balance and poise on the palate. Slightly short finish, but really, this gave an excuse to drink more. Just wonderful.

Finish came across a slightly short and simpler than in a few other vintages, but I'm eager to see how this develops as more secondary character emerges over the next decade.

Aged Bordeaux dinner at Del Frisco's (Del Frisco's): Decanted for 1 hour. Cork split, but the wine was still in perfect shape. This was definitely the most overpriced bottle of the night. The CT London crowd seemed to enjoy this bottle far more than I did. I can see why Margaux was poo-pooed in 1982; this didn't hold a candle to the youth, depth and complexity of the Gruaud Larose.
This note was taken by another guest at the dinner, but I wholeheartedly agree with his assessment:
Quite a surprise! On the nose: very savory, with roasted meat, game, orange rind and cherry notes. Reminded me of an aged Chateauneuf du Pape. Finishes on the lighter side; with some violet notes. Ready to drink. Won't develop further.

Bordeaux v Burgundy event (The Square Restaurant - London): Oh man oh man how sexy is this wine. Apparently this wine had done a world tour on various container ships and still it arrives dressed in silk and as fresh and elegant as Audrey Hepburn. Incredible note - earthy, soy sauce, sweet fruit, refined elegant, precise, wonderful. On the palate this is ethereal - maturity in excelsis. The only downside was the finish was a touch short, but this is really a minor criticism. Why buy 1st growths when you can get stuff like this for a fraction of the price. Truly brilliant.

My seventh place of seven 1982 Bordeaux tasted. Slightly tannic nose of dark fruit, the nose never improved, more of the same on the palate, nice medium body and finish, simple, tasty but not tonight.

Taste at Elysian. Showing really well. Color shows some signs of age, but still great life in the wine as a whole. Nose is classic left bank Bordeaux. Not brooding enough to be Pauillac, and not firm enough for St. Estephe. Dark cherries, leather, some lighter cassis, and tobacco notes. Palate is polished and finishes super clean. More dark rustic red fruit. Some dried herbs - black tea. Really nice wine. Subtle characteristics that provide the depth I would expect from Palmer. Beautiful birthyear wine. Drinking well now and probably has another decade or so under its belt. Thanks Pilks.

Rustic in style for this normally elegant wine. The color shows lightening at the rim. The wine light and simple for Palmer. The slightly rustic finish showed some green notes along with black fruit. The wine was made from a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The harvest took place from September 15 to October 5.

Pre-Auction Tasting - Chateau Palmer 1970-1983; 5/7/2010-5/12/2010 (Edmonton, AB): Ullage just down to shoulder. From a much ballyhooed vintage, this bottling of Chateau Palmer 1982 still shines attractively. Full depth of dark ruby colour; an attractive set of aromas – primarily dark berry fruit – elegantly invigorates a sense of something special; predominantly black currant fruit in the flavours – supple texture; fruit carries well into the finish which lasts a very long time. Development should continue over the next number of years, supporting its pedigree. Acids and tannins in harmony with the fruit throughout the finish, but lots of room for further evolution.

Exceeded expectations. This wine is at peak and was every bit as good as the 83 although different in style. Perfect cedary elegance. This bagan to fade ever so slightly after an hour, so avoid long decant.

Oinofiloi Wine Club Christmas Tasting Dark garnet. Initially very expressive nose with sweet dark berries, earthiness and noble animal notes. Mid-bodied but very powerful, with solid but soft tanins, nice fruit and high acidity. Very long finish. Holding very well, but started to collapse after an hour or so in the glass.

Healthy deep garnet. Nose not as expressive as expected from a 1982 margaux. Black fruit, leather, someone from the panel suggested salinity, hints of mint. Had only one glass but somewhere along the tasting the nose started to fade. Medium body of great finesse, tannins still there but very ripe and fine grained. Good cedary, fruity aftertaste. My guess is that this wine which came directly from the chateau needs further cellaring.

Colour: Red w a tinge of brown, medium dense. Nose: Sweet licorice and a hint of wet cardboard. Palate: Ripe. Red fruit and more sweet licorice. Just a hint of residual tannins towards the end. This has beautiful balance but quaere whether it will keep much longer.

Garnet color. Ripe dark red plum and cassis aromatics with wet tobacco and some underbrush. Very nice palate with a good bit of ripe fruit remaining and some nice earthy notes. There was something just a bit off on the finish, but still quite enjoyable.

Characteristic, super stremlined Palmer nose with fine tobacco and darker fruit notes. Patrician palate, though turns a bit sharp on the finish. Fine structure. Very nice, but perhaps not totally correct.

Drunk side by side to the '89 Margaux. More austere than the Margaux, all elegance, good balance with great acidity. Tobacco, smoke, definitely more mineral and with earthy notes. I suspect that it would habe benefited of a short decanting. It is ready to drink but will hold a few more years without amy problem.

Simply gorgeous. Elegant, but yet has its own body. Smooth tannin integrated with red berries, smokey, mineral, cassis, plums. It finishes nice and long. Different league with the 1983, but still a very nice wine.

Decanted for 1 hour. From a very cold cellar. The cork was a tad damp but the wine was fine. Garnet fading to mahogany with a clear rim. After the bottle stink blew off, an absoultely incredible nose. Flowers, orchids, raspberries, and violets. An expansive bouquet, filling the room... everyone at the table could smell this as it was poured. Alas the Body was not up to the great bouquet. Medium with melted tannins, some fruit but nowhere near the extent promised by the nose. Some drying at the end and short... but all at the table agreed that the nose was worth it... Again at 4 hrs... the nose was souring, and the mid palate collapsed... but those memories of the scents! I rated this an 88 mostly for the nose... the palate would rate 84 and the nose 92.

Just about as its reputation would have it, the '82 Palmer was good, but not a major success in 1982 Bordeaux terms. Nothing out of place and there's an attractive note of cooking spice on the nose but on the palate it doesn't have the scale of the '89 or usual examples of '83. By memory, this '82 is comparable to the modest 1985 Palmer. Soft, mature, a good drink, but not as exciting as Palmer can be when everything goes right.

My friend Costas brought this bottle for the Friday's dinner at home. Decanted and filtered just prior drinking, because of sediment. The condition of the cork was not good, but the wine was not corked. A muddy garnet color with a plumy rim. Very expressive nose dominated by scents of oak, smoke, raisin, and cherry. Medium - bodied with totaly melted tannins and good level of acidity. The palate is plenty of red dried fruits with a hint of banana. Also good flavors of nuts, mushrooms, cedar and licorice. Quite short finish. A great wine to drink right now, without very long aging potential any more.

Château Palmer Vertical (Morton's): Opened with more developed savory aromatics than the '85 that got smoky with time in the glass. The fruit profile was similar to the ’85, the tannins a little screechier, but this, too, civilized itself as it breathed.

Mature appearance, medium garnet core, wide mahogany rim. Complex and relatively rich nose, lots of spice, leaf, hints of tea and fruit-cake, some underlying sweet cassis fruit. Initial attack is equally promising with cassis, spice and some tobacco leaf, but then falls away sharply on a clipped, shortish finish with the edgy tannins comfortably out-lasting the fruit. Ultimately disappointing and on this showing needs drinking up.

Decanted to remove sediment and rebottled and corked. Took to dinner at steak house and let breathe for about an hour in the bottle. Medium garnet color, no noticeable bricking. Fragrant floral nose with Margaux violets still in evidence. Some earth and smoke on the palate initially but berries on the mid-palate. Decently long finish. Tannins resolved but still present enough to give the wine strength to stand up to the bone-in Kansas City strips we chose to have with it. This isn't a knock-the-socks-off-of-every-sense-organ-in-your-body wine -- just a really classic Bordeaux that paired splendidly with our hearty dinner.

Offline with Jonathan Dinh (Seattle, WA): Popped and poured at the end of the night. A fantastic nose of spicecake, soy, cedar and horse. This has a nice palate, round, friendly, far from profound and a bit more muddy and lacking definition than I would like. While it's a nice wine it pales in comparison to the 1983 Palmer.

Diane's Birthday Dinner in BC.: From magnum. I like this wine, but its definitely over the hill. In the mouth its a bit thin and simple, and lacks personality. The fruit that was there was sweet and pleasant, but IMHO its on the downslope. Interestingly, it was well received at the table and the first magnum (of six) to be finished during dinner.

Château Palmer: Rich, full depth of purple toned ruby in colour; penetrating nose of clean berry and plum, with oak strains; fresh entry, but quite different from any of the other wines in this tasting - clean black currant and cherry fruit, with a freshly picked berry character; long and elegant; not quite what I expected from this wine, but it does finish attractively and the fruit dominates on the finish. Still some time left for this wine to fully evolve, but the acids and tannins harmoniously blend with the fruit.

Tasted at 910 Restaurant (with Dean Lycas). Served with rib steak. The wine was not decanted. The light was dim, making hue determination difficult. The color can be said to be deep, however. The nose is clean and shows intense coffee, chocolate, cigar box and ripe plum. Medium-bodied on the palate, with similar flavors as the nose. The remaining tannins are quite supple. The finish is long and smooth. This wine should hold nicely for several more years.

Dinner with DQ and BL, LMC, RN and M, and L too.

Incredibly pristine and fresh for a 38 year old bottle of wine, not a bit of bricking and translucent medium garnet. Supremely balanced and elegant with great mouth feel and texture. This got better and better with more air over 6+ hours. Perfect with fire grilled NY strips steaks.

Drink now.

Good juice, a wine I've always liked, even if its not a rock star, but it was time to finish them off.

The wine is fully matured and it has beautifully integrated oak and fruit character.
Very smooth on the palate and wonderful nose with great depth changing from dark red fruits to cedar and then
even subtler notes of leather and spice emrged. A pleasure to just inhale the aromas ever few minutes. The depth
seemed to increase for the first 20 minutes or so and then tapered a bit but the palate did not waver. It was just a really
special wine with a great steak. Perfect complement .
Not sure how long it may stay at this plateau - but it has not disappointed or changed much over the last year.

Dark garnet.
