Dark translucent ruby. Fresh, energetic, truly perfumed nose of crushed red berry, voluminous nostril-filling violets, damp earth. Layers of darker ripe berry, iron granules, iodine, and briar on the deep-drilling palate. Tingling acidity and firm tannin. Longer finish of iron-inflected dark berry fruit. Delicious and brimming with life, with years to go.

Crystaline red fruit – hard candies – on the Nose. Medium bodied. Fruity – red-fruited; medium+ acidity; 13.9% alc. just a touch noticeable on the back-end. Very enjoyable; drinking well now; clearly in a better place now than it was when I had a bottle 8 years ago. Overall, on the bigger side for Arcadian, but nothing ever gets out-of-control or exaggerated. Drink Now and over the medium term.

From a magnum. The last several notes nail this for me -- pure cherry and strawberry on the palate with a savory component, too. Some leather and spice. Well liked by all: wine geeks and more casual drinkers, too.
I did feel that the wine showed best after a significant amount of time open. I opened the bottle in the morning, then double decanted it an hour before serving it that evening. It really started to open up near the end of dinner and the last glass was the best.

Lovely Burgundy nose, a clear nod to the Old World, the palate is fresh and linear, filled with bright red cherries and dark toned gooseberries, brambly, ripe fruit but savory character, all in all very attractive Pinosity. Refreshing acidity and good long finish. This is just graceful and hugely enjoyable, in a great place now. Sculptured? Maybe, but so is Venus de Milo.

Seductive, earthy but clean bouquet, the palate is slightly sweet and there is ripeness to the fruit but the overall character is savoury with evident cool climate features, nice complexity with earthy cherry flavors and raspberries, violets, leather, pomegranate and hints of cigar smoke. Bright acidity and resolved but still present tannins. Long dry finish with wild strawberries. Not particularly Californian, clearly nods to the old world but this one does it with grace and beauty. One rarely comes across this good a Pinot and nice Pinosity at this price point, simply excellent. Solid 92 points.

Deep yet moderately translucent dark cherry red color with a slightly evolved pomegranate hue and a wide, colorless rim. The nose feels ripe, sunny and sweet-toned yet counterpointed with a more savory evolved note. Expressive aromas of dark forest fruits and brambly blackberries, some leathery notes, light floral nuances of violets, a little bit of wizened black cherry, a hint of earthy Pinosity and a touch of cigar box. The wine is silky, savory and beautifully textural on the palate with flavors of game and brambly black raspberries, some leathery notes, a little bit of ferrous blood, light stony mineral notes, a sweet hint of wizened dark fruits and a touch of meaty umami. Good sense of structure with the quite high acidity and somewhat resolved yet still moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is savory, very long and surprisingly grippy with powerful, complex flavors of brambly black raspberries, some meaty umami, light leathery notes, a little bit of earthy Pinosity, a sweeter hint of darker-toned juicy fruits and a touch of roasted game.
A very impressive, complex and surprisingly structured California Pinot that you wouldn't confuse for Burgundy, yet one that manages to avoid all the typical pitfalls of Cali Pinot. Lots of ripe yet savory fruit here, backed up with impressive structure that never feels too extracted or aggressive, but perfectly in line with the body and fruit. And despite the ripeness, the wine doesn't feel particularly soft or sweet, but instead firm, dry and savory. In a terrific spot right now, but will continue to keep - if not improve - for many years more. Superb value at 46,50€.

Yes, in a perfect spot !! I waited to just the right amount of time for my last bottle. I echo my review of 4.5 years ago. Still tasting extremely good right now !! The cork was perfect after about 12 years in the bottle. This balanced Pinot Noir was consumed over two days. Deep ruby color with no oxidation, clarity medium. Aromas of red raspberry and pomegranate, flavors of red fruit compote, rhubarb with a hint of black tea and a medium to long finish. Popped and poured, but this wine really benefited from gentle oxygen since it was much more soft and integrated on day two. A balanced Pinot Noir from Talbot owned Sleepy Hollow vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. This Pinot Noir may be an age worthy wine and may have more years of life left. Great fruit and great winemaking from Joe Davis at Arcadian.

Drinking very nicely. I’d say this is probably around peak, but should hold a good while there. Not a upper echelon Joe Davis wine, so doesn’t require longer cellaring. 91-92.

Dark ruby with a ripe berry nose and flavor profile. Bold fruit and body which befits a Cal Pinot and closer to an Oregon Syrah with a little spice. While I prefer a more austere version, this one is probably more to the liking of those wanting bold fruit. A good dose of acid and nicely integrated tannins makes for an enjoyable, balanced wine. 12 years of age softens any overt sharpness.

Just the slightest touch of TCA, barely noticeable on the nose and finish. Otherwise, this was quite nice and I drank it anyway..... cuz I’m too cheap to open something else ;) but actually, the flaw was so minor I spent most of my time debating whether it actually was there or not. The underlying wine was exactly as I remembered and has a few years left at cruising altitude.
The aromatics soared from the pnp. It took the palate a bit longer, but it, too, showed beautifully. Juicy with cranberries and earth. There is still a hollowness in the mid palate that I noticed a few years ago, but the long finish makes up for it.

2007 ARCADIAN SLEEPY HOLLOW VINEYARD SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS PINOT NOIR- this gave a multitude of flavours with spice and cardamon accents to the cranberry and cherry fruit with roasted red cherry coming in by mod palate; it was a very tasty, full bodied, wondrous wine.

I think this is my first Arcadian. Looks like it should at this age with some rust in the color. As I read many of the reviews here, I would vouch for many of the points and observations made. I particularly refer to grafstab’s review from 2015 and agree with all of it, but I must add that my senses are not stimulated to the level of praise of many of the other reviewers. Very pleasant, almost lovely, but as grafs note mentions, complexity seems to elude and I wouldn’t expect more via geriatric appreciation, even though it’s demise seems to certainly be at a glacial pace. 5+11+16+8= 90

Similar to my last note in how this is already fairly sleek and streamlined by the usual standards of the producer. It still has a youthful profile but that's on account of its sheer freshness and vibrancy, not baby fat -- it has an almost gamay-like juiciness. Usually these need some time in the decanter to mellow out some of that rich California fruit, but this one is ready to go right away. Exceptionally drinkable and lip-smackingly yummy with the Californian fruit sweetness nicely reined in while still being pretty unmistakably Californian.

Very polished and smooth, with pure candied red fruit. Brilliant in the glass. Nose is shy, adds some spice and cedar. Moderate finish though I wish there was a little more depth here. Plenty of acidity to keep this energetic. Can drink or hold. Very much a cali Pinot but nicely made and balanced.

Sadly, the last of a case... and maybe the best yet. Arcadian is such a great winery and this bottle was yet another example of why. Very floral on opening with a translucent, rose to garnet color and that delightful mix of light-weight red berry and cherry, dust, mushrooms and spice on the palate that is so common. Spice and mineral flavors grow in the glass over time and it turns darker both in color and fruit, and also adds body. As usual, intense but not heavy, and elegant, but not tart. Delicious. 93-94

Smokey, cherry, cinnamon and wet stone on the nose. Pallet exploded with tart cherry, raspberry and dried plum turning towards a hint of gingerbread cookie. Long finish with great mineral. Exceptional now.

Slightly tart, green and sharp-edged for the first hour or so. Then eventually mellows and softens into a proper Arcadian pinot. Much better after 2-3 hours when a traditional burgundian profile emerges. Soft, silky and lean texture with dark berry, dust and sous bois flavors. A touch of bitterness on the otherwise very nice, long finish. Still one of the most burgundian of all the California pinots.

Popped and poured, moderate ruby, clear. Pretty and effusive aromas of raspberry, cherry, spice, autumnal vegetation, incense and minerals. Medium body. While similarly fruited on the palate, this shows more of the 2007 vintage character, with with ripe cherry, raspberry jam, currant and a subtle streak of green. Smooth tannins on the decent close, nicely balanced overall. Really good at present, should only improve with a bit more age.

-- popped and poured on Day 1 -- -- tasted non-blind over two days --
NOSE: DAY 1: rich; savory (a touch leafy); maraschino cherry; moderately high-toned; hint of oak; lots of cherry; hint of school paste. DAY 2: rich, sweet cherry; medium-light oak note.
BODY: dark ruby color of medium depth; medium to medium-full bodied.
TASTE: DAY 1: ripe fruit; medium+ acidity; light oak; 13.9% alc. not noticeable; slight earthy/leathery element in the background; very young right now --- can't decide if this is simply straightforward/simple with not much additional complexity to come or if it is wound tight as a result of its youthfulness with complexity to come with bottle age; I'd recommend Holding, despite being tasty today. DAY 2: doesn't seem as acidic as yesterday, but still has good acidity; slight ashy note; a little garrigue on the finish, which is long and of medium intensity. Strikes me as being on the bigger side for an Arcadian Sleepy Hollow Pinot.

The best, and last, of 6 bottles drunk over the past two years. Horse blanket funk finally has receded into the background, with black cherry coming to the fore, accented by notes of wild berry, underbrush and baking spice. On the palate, more black cherry, with notes of menthol, baking spice and mineral. Nicely balanced. Well aged but not going downhill.

This has been a favorite of mine over the past couple of years. Normally, this has plenty of bright fruit. However the fruit in this bottle was a bit dull and tired. Everything else was terrific and in a typical Arcadian/burgundian style. Will not score as this was atypical.

Served blind. With the bag around it, my first thought was SLH pinot with a ripe style, as it smelled of higher alc on the aromatic to me. The nose seemed clovey, with light cologne. The palate reminded me of hard candy, like a Jolly Rancher cherry, yet there was acid around it, a spicy finish. Off comes the bag. Arcadian. Huh. For me, the vintage shows here, the higher ripeness level and while the wine is labeled at 13.9%, it seemed higher to me. After more air, there is blue and red fruit here and this just seems like bigger Arcadian to me.

Another terrific bottle of Arcadian pinot. Spectacular nose that is a lot more burgundian than Californian -- dark fruits, earth, loam, mushrooms, spice and a hint of funk. Medium and silky smooth texture with great intensity, depth and complexity on the palate. Super-long finish with a touch of bitterness at the very end. Very big for a pinot, but seems elegant and sophisticated at the same time. 93+

More of the horse blanket funk and mushroom, with notes of cranberry/raspberry underneath and hints of mineral and underbrush. On the palate, tarter red fruit this time around, with musty, funky cranberry predominating, enhanced by some baking spice nuance. Nicely savory, with a strong acidic streak.

This wine keeps improving. On the nose, the funkiness has dissipated to a pleasing leverl, adding nuance to a core of black cherry, with notes of wet grass and pine. On the palate, black cherry and wild berry, with notes of brown spice. Zippy acidity. Loved it.

Had this before at Pismo Beach, same impressions, great mix of CA and old world pinot, but still a new world wine. Nuances of leather and mushrooms mix with bright red fruit tones but overall weight of wine was really nice, iron fist in a velvet glove kind of thing, but not in the same league as a nice burg.

Opened and poured, this wine gave an excellent showing. This bottle seems more expressive than a bottle tasted in September 2012. It remains youthful and only shows hints of maturing elements. Both the aromatics and palate show depth, harmony and balance. This bottle gives the impression that it will benefit from additional year or two of bottle age.

Central Coast Trip; 6/23/2013-6/26/2013 (Central Coast / Santa Barbara): Red fruit profile with higher toned register. The official TN asserts that the wine is "sharply delineated" but I didn't find it especially precise. I did agree with the finding of "smoky minerality." A perfectly fine Pinot but this wasn't really a Pinot trip.

In the past I've found Arcadian's pinots to be a little too rich on release and needing some time to mellow out, but this one is already in an exceptionally pretty state, certainly the most gentle I've ever had at this age and with the fruit dialed back enough to actually exhibit some negative space. The sweet primary fruit component is really only at the fore for the first few sips and after that it turns amazingly floral, as if it were equal parts grapes and roses. I don't think I would confuse this for Burgundy (at least not at this point) but it does come across very similar to the Chandon de Briailles style. As it sits in the glass it gets more and more seamless and a stony mineral element surfaces - the last sip was best and this should be a fascinating one to follow over the long term.

Wow this was a really fantastic bottle of wine. Bought this because I have had some pretty good 07 Cali Pinots and the Wine Access email told a pretty intriguing story of a Burgundian style winemaker in Sleepy Hollow. Okay they sold me and I ordered four (with the free shipping of course). Well based on this first bottle I am glad I did. I opened a bottle about an hour before dinner but knew from that sample sip this had the stuffing to be a great bottle. Friday's are Pinot nights and I poured Paula a glass after we walked the dogs and she the non-pinot fan liked it, a good sign. This wine compared very well to some 1er and Grand Cru Burgs I have had the chance to sample over the years minus the price tag. Wonderful nose with a hint of barnyard and raspberries. Give it a good swirl and it rewards you when you sniff deeply into the bowl. Smooth on the palate with some dried cherry notes and a medium finish. I will be plowing thru these over the next year or two. Wish I bought a case.

Another terrific bottle. A nice dose of burgundian funk on the nose when first opened. Complemented by dark cherry, spice and a hint of smoke. Super-smooth and balanced on the palate with rich dark cherry and a bit of leather and earth. Good concentration, nice depth of flavors and plenty of grip. As is typical of Arcadian wines, it has rich, ripe fruit flavors, but also enough backbone and tension to keep it from being too fruit-forward. Will improve, but also drinking great now.

Slow ox'd in the bottle for four hours prior to this note. A lovely and fleshy nose of dark berry, gentle sweet baking spice, bit of toast and cocoa. Nose is super soft and supple, really intoxicating. Palate is dark, taught and dense. Lots of concentration, more wood in the mouth with a fair amount of toast and spice. Structure and ample acidity, this is built for some cellar time. Nice now with a few hours of air but I'd like to see the palate flesh out a bit.

Really lovely wine. Dark cherry, spice and damp earth. Good depth of flavors and nice complexity. Lean and silky smooth with terrific balance. Medium +, smooth, fruity finish. Arcadian always seems to be a mix of both burgundy and California, and this bottle was no exception. Riper than a typical burgundy, but leaner and more elegant than a typical California pinot. Another winner from Arcadian.

Slightly funky on the nose. RLP805's "horse blanket" description is spot on. But not unpleasant, and intermingles well with notes of loamy cherry and mushroom. Palate unfolds with rich, deep cherry, with a savory, funky undertone that adds nice nuance. Great acidity provides a counterpoint and keeps the wine lively. Spicy finish adds a note of cloves. Very good.

Pop and poured, a very nice wine. A real hit of leather on the nose, with a little funk, smells like a horse blanket. Cherry, strawberry and dark fruits. Nicely balanced maybe still a tad hot on the finish but I am guessing that that will go away as we make out way through the bottle.

Sunday, June 17, 2012 - Wine is coming along nicely. Beginning to add addition levels of complexity, primarily burg style characteristics such as a leather note on the finish and forest floor. It's quite approachable at this point in time with a 6 hour decant.

Showed a mix of burgundian and CA feel. For the former, the herb and black cherry, along with red fruited-like bing cherry and an aromatic of pounded rocks. For the CA side, shows plum and darker color. Overall, this was solid and enjoyable, with good acid in the finish and a wine I would drink again.

Very typical Arcadian pinot, with good controlled fruit ripeness balanced by a lot of structure for aging. The 07s seem to be more approachable than the 05s, but I would nonetheless recommend holding this until 8-10 years after vintage; as good as this was, a bottle of the 2000 Arcadian Bien Nacido reminded us how much better these wines are when mature. At maturity, I expect the 07s to be better than the 2000s. 91 now, up to 93ish at maturity.

We had this wine with salmon, after decanting it. I think this is a good example of a Burgundian style being produced in California. The nose was earthy, with dark fruit - raspberry. On the palate, lots of black cherry and chocolate, but not overpowering like some of the Sonoma Pinots I've tasted recently. A delightful, smooth finish. All in all, a very satisfying wine.

A terrific "re-introduction" to the 2007 vinatage at Arcadian. (My first one of these a few days ago was corked.) Pretty nose of strawberry, rose petal, baking spice, a little stemminess and great pinot funk. Very classy and wonderfully balanced. Slightly more forward and, dare I say, richer than the '05, but in a good way. Make no mistake, this will age very well, but pop one now if you have more than a few. It's showing great.

Opened and poured, this wine required some time to show its best. The aromatics evolve to reveal floral, black cherry, subtle earth and spice notes. The color is a medium to dark ruby that is correct for the wines age. The palate shows richness and concentration without losing its appealing, subtle qualities. The displays a medium to long finish where both acidity and tannins make an appearance. This should improve with additional bottle age over the next two to four years.

Delicious. 93-94

Smooth tannins on the decent close, nicely balanced overall.

Super-smooth and balanced on the palate with rich dark cherry and a bit of leather and earth. Good concentration, nice depth of flavors and plenty of grip.
