  • My last bottle of this and glad to be able to share it with Mark and Carol for our zoom tasting. This one was drinking nicely straight from PnP, still plenty of fruit and well balanced. Agree with Mark that it seems flat after too much time in the glass. I have a small amount left to try tonight that has been stored in the fridge in the recorked bottle. It will be interesting to see how it holds up.

  • Wow! My oldest Myriad wine, thanks to Jenmermaidia and our great zoom tasting! I really dug the classic cab nose, the florals, etc. While a lighter weight in the mouth it has retained a nice Napa cab fruit profile and decent length to the finish. The acidity is waning and once open in the glass for 60+ minutes it really starts to drop off so maybe not too much time left for this unless you are going to pnp and drink up right away. Thanks to Jen for bringing this to the table tonight. My oldest Myriad and a nice treat to have. Thanks, Jen!

  • Not as good as my last bottle. I wish I had read my last note which implies it was best right after opening. I let this sit in the decanter for 4 hours without tasting—lesson learned.
Very pleasant, smooth tannins, alcohol integrated, nice fruit but not very concentrated and not much else. Seemed like something was missing. Maybe getting past its prime. One bottle left and I will drink soonish with PnP.

  • Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 4 hours plus, served at cellar temp and maintained. The nose is very ripe, bursting with black and blue fruits, black currant, boysenberry, pencil and a bit of dried herb. The palate is full bodied, dense and I'd have to call it jammy with ripe black currant and bluish fruit, there's a little tart black cherry, lots of glycerin, some gravel, well integrated tannins and not much oak showing now either. The balance is there though I question the structure to age much further. Probably at or near peak.

I opened this thinking my dad would love this style of wine. Personally, I'm not blown away as it appears most are that drink this wine. Surprisingly, my dad wasn't overly impressed either. He echoed that pretty much everything we've had over the last couple months was better. Guess I'm influencing his palate after all :). Now that's not a diss to the wine. It's fine, but as my dad also noted, rather monolithic. Yup, there's a ton of fruit there, and it is well balanced presently, but I just don't find that much of interest after that. I'm happy to drink a glass, then I'll gladly move on, but I have a harder time drinking a larger portion of a bottle without getting bored.

  • Deep color, nose a little subdued, as is the structure, even though it remains evident. A touch past its prime, still really good.

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome. Beautiful fruit, structured yet just enough hidden to allow the fruit to shine. Depth and then some. Nose matches the mouthfeel.

  • I did an experiment last night, tasting both the ‘08 and the ‘17 Myriad Dr Crane. A better scientist would have taken notes, but unfortunately I only have less detailed impressions to share.
First of all, both were excellent. Much to my surprise, the ‘17 was by far better and very drinkable.
But the ‘08 was still fantastic. Lovely big fruit aromas on pnp and hadn’t lost the big fruit despite the decade of age. The fruit was more mature but a nice mixture of red and black and plenty of spice and complexity. After an hour of drinking really well, it started to go downhill. After several hours the fruit was much more dilute with not so much to back it up. I think this still has a few years left, but it isn’t going to evolve into something better. And ‘dilute’ is a relative term, given that we were also drinking the ‘17 which was a ripe and luscious berry salad.
This ‘experiment’ challenged a number of my assumptions:
    1. A wine with a few years on it will always be preferred to a super young one (esp Cabernet)
    2. Napa cabs are always better with air vs PnP. In this case, both wines were at their best immediately after opening.
    3. There were no great wines in ‘17, just ‘good considering the vintage.’ I think the ‘17 Dr Crane qualifies as a great wine regardless.

  • A little bit of funk on the nose: B++/A-
Tasty palate with multiple layers of fruit, but it does't seem to have reached its peak yet (B++/A-)

  • Outstanding, drinking perfectly right now. Fruit, structure, harmony. Nothing more to say.

  • I am finding out that the theory of "larger bottles age best" is true! This was outstanding and absolutely crushes all of the '08-09s I have tasted in the last few months (Hundred Acre, Rudd, Ghost Block single vineyard, Kelly Fleming, Jaquelynn, etc...). A classic Mike Smith wine that wowed the crowd.

  • A very well balanced wine. Beautiful mid-palate and mouth coating as a whole. Only thing was that it's in a tweeter or dumb phase. Could have you see more fruit or more floral elegance and tertiary. That same d enjoyed quite a bit and imagine it will get better in a couple of years

  • Blind Reds (Tilia): Served blind, this screamed Napa cab, and probably the only wine that all 7 of us called blind. There was a lot of perfume, flowers, spice and vanilla on this wine. To me, this is textbook "cocktail wine". It is both fun to drink and annoying to drink in it's strange amped-up style.

  • Double Blind Reds at Tilia (Tilia, Mpls): Very dark purple/red color. Drank 1 glass double blind over an hour plus. There was no doubt this was Napa Cab and I thought this was a TRB wine, probably a Beckstoffer. Wow, this was a big, slutty, hedonist pleasure to drink. This wine has started to come into its own. No doubt a fruit forward wine with plush black fruits, gorgeous cassis and plump blackberries. It is impressive for what it is and I admit to fully enjoying and appreciating it for that. This was well balanced in that the oak is integrated, there is no overt alcohol and the tannins have softened. 93 to 93+pts.

  • Similar to my CT notes from September 2015. I bumped this up a point to 94, as an hour in the decanter brought out some of the coffee, chocolate, and mineral notes that I typically associate with the Dr. Crane site.

A beautifully balanced and full-bodied Cabernet. Fully integrated and ready right now for optimum drinking. Enjoy now and over the next 3-5 years.

  • Very similar to the 2009 Myriad Dr. Crane, with an initial subdued nose of dark fruit, earth, wood, and alcohol. On the palate, dark brooding berry fruit, blackberry, cedar/wood, and earth. Not as much of the coffee note in the 2008 (compared to the 2009 & 2010).

No decant needed in my opinion. Slow O2 over a total of two hours. Some of those Dr. Crane coffee and chocolate nuances emerged with some air, along with slightly more dark currant notes.

Like the 2009, I'd recommend drinking the 2008 over the next 5-7 years for optimum consumption. Overall, I have slightly preferred the 2010 over the 2008 and 2009 Dr. Cranes, as the 2010 had more power and layered fruit notes. Not surprisingly, the 2012 and 2013 Dr. Cranes are the real stars of the show so far.

  • Pop and Pour, this wine was very powerful and was delicious. Dr. Crane is my favorite of all the Myriad wines. I think that this will age for many years. I am glad that I still have numerous bottles left.

  • Decanted over 3 hours. Lots of fruit on front & mid-palate. Very nice long finish. Not sure how much better it will get -- maybe 3-4 more years but not sure it is worth waiting much longer.

  • Rich, lush with dark fruit, great integration and blueberry, blackberry and a long finish

  • Opened up with a big, richly fruity nose that became more nuanced and floral with air. By the three hour mark, the bouquet was incredibly beautiful. In the glass, the color was the deepest purple. The palate was absolutely stacked - blue and purple fruits, savory mineral notes, toasty oak, and a chewy mouthfeel. While it's definitely delicious now with a good decant, there are plenty of tannins here to see this through many more years. In fact, if I had more, I'd probably open the next in 2-3 years.

  • A 2 hour decant. Mint and blueberries on the nose. Very smooth, scary smooth, like "Will this age?" smooth. Lots of fruit and dominated by blueberry. At a tasting, after trying other wines, all I could taste out of this was blueberry. Still, the purity of the fruit makes this delicious. Simple at this age, and I'm not getting any ageable structure out of it.

  • First time I have had wine from this producer. This is wonderfully powerful and delicious. The nose is flamboyant and explodes from the glass. Black fruit, cassis, earth, and minerals. Really shows a similar profile to Spottswoode in my opinion. Great mixture of structure and Napa ripeness and power. Great wine.

  • Opened for my daughter's 5th Birthday. Amazing how time flies...

Pop and pour. Amazing nose from the get go - high toned cherry, blackberry, roses. Even cinnamon at certain times. The taste is not holding back at all, as everything on the nose is on full display. Tannins are super silky. Over time in the glass (one hour) additional weight is added on. For me there is no reason to hold my last bottle any longer than a year or two more. This is at my sweet spot now! Beckstoffer Dr Crane fruit at its best!

  • Best cab we've had in a LONG time!!!

  • Popped and poured. Medium-plus lively ruby/violet hue. Intense aromas fill the air with blackberry, currant, cedar, fresh mint, thai basil, and spice from oak. Medium-plus body. Crushed blackberries and raspberries on the palate, which shows an intriguing impression of minerals and more subtle spice from oak. Great purity. The tannins are rounded and slightly astringent on the plus finish. Drinking quite splendidly, but should be even better in a few more years.

  • I think this is drinking really well right now. Terrific balance. Just a great wine overall.

  • This was great now, but I really think it needs more time. The tannins still need to soften. Beautiful fruit, milk chocolate and cigar. In three to five years this will be mind blowing.

  • Went head to head with 2008 Corra and the room was split, two totally different styles. This reminds me of Materium, a very soft and elegant wine with extreme depth. Velvety smooth and extremely light on its feet, a wine you want to hold in your month forever. Silky tannins coat the mouth, dark fruit, gentle earth tones, oak, vanilla, and chocolate, all dance in harmony. This wine is so well done that you feel like the grapes were watered from the "Fountain of Youth", almost a magical/healthy feeling to the wine!?!

  • A hint of mint, and smooth red fruit dominated the taste. Elegant. Glad I have another one of these to try down the road.

  • The nose alone is worth the price of admission on the 2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard great pure fruit nicely balanced with a stiff back bone that seems to bode well for aging. I hate opening these but they are so damn good it quickly alleviates the guilt associated with infanticide.

  • Very Good. Balanced components already integrated. Could stand to be more complex. Perhaps additional time will help.

  • Not quite as good as the first bottle. It was overwhelmed by the food, once dinner was over the wine began to shine. My type of cab just wished there was more power there. A much more subtle/elegant wine then I remembered. A great wine to start a dinner party.

  • Popped and poured. Deep, youthful ruby/purple hue. Intense aromas of black raspberry, creme de cassis, red bean paste, cocoa powder, and an intriguing floral note. Medium-plus body. On the palate, this youthful Cabernet shows flavors of ripe black fruits, loamy earth, mocha, and just a touch of cedar. The tannins are dusty yet surprisingly smooth on the lengthy finish. Aside from excellent depth of fruit, the large-scaled, yet seemingly elegant structure is a stand out characteristic and showcases what a great winemaker can do with fruit from an exceptional vineyard. Delicious right now, this should ideally be left alone in the cellar for at least a few years...but if you have a few, why not enjoy one right now? Great juice!

  • Incredible wine. I may of found a new favorite. Popped and poured, amazed at how the wine opened from the first glass to the last. Initially: bold, fruit forward, dark fruit, tanned leather and hints of vanilla. Wonderful velvety finish held for around a minute. As the wine opened this huge wine transitioned into a elegant multi-layered beauty! Chocolate tones replaced the fruit and the oak arrived. As the wine hit your mouth the chocolate hit you and then you would notice the layers of leather and oak. GREAT wine and could see this turning into a perfect 100 with time.

  • Winery Tastings, October 2010; 10/22/2010-10/25/2010 (Mt. Veeder, Oakville, Spring Mountain, St. Helena, Calistoga, Napa): Incredible. In terms of overall complexity and integration, this is sure to be the best of the bunch. Drinking surprisingly smoothly for a wine this young, with all the fruit, backbone, and size you expect from Mike Smith.

  • What a Cab. I've never had anything from Dr. Crane and can see why this costs $15k/ton. What a nose. Cassis, blackberry jam, vanilla and an olfactory tingling herbacious note. This was showing well. In the mouth, big ripe fruit flavors, velvety tannins, and a refreshing mouthfeel. Everyone (including me) talks about the many lack luster $100 Napa Cabs there are. This Cab is at the top of my list. This is a steal at $95.
