Agree with prior notes this is a very classy wine. Gunsmoke and red fruit with lovely gravel underneath. Drinking beautifully with 20-30min in the glass.

This is a very classy pape clement. It’s one of those wines that gets you scratching the head and wondering if the bottle is mis labeled. Very suave, this was quite Margaux like and was throwing allot of beautiful tones of violet, earth, and blood. Really dry and perfect in balance, it held its own after a most beautiful 2009 carre. This is classic Bordeaux. Ready, Drink!

2004 Horizontal Dinner (Tunglok Peking Duck Novena): Deep inky ruby. Really very fruity on the nose, but seems to have been masked by a dank basement feel. The palate does have that fungal character along with ripe fruits. But have chosen not to rate this as it is indeed cork-tainted and not showing at its best

Slow ox’ed for about 1h. 6 years since my last bottle this was again showing really well. Still a dark garnet but the oak that might have seemed a bit rich in its youth has been nicely absorbed in the meantime. With a medium (+) body clearly more fruit than a 07 Leoville Barton that followed. Just great classic Bdx.

good, but not extraordinary. had the 2002, the 2003 and now this. Every vintage has its own character, completely different. The 2003 was far above the others. 2004 is in good shape, will last easily for another decade, but lacking the "wow" effect. Didn't change much from PnP till the next day. A bit one-dimensional, lacking complexity but had a good structure, black fruit on the palate. Will wait a few years for the next bottle to see, if there is improvement..

Outstanding. Dark fruit, earth and tobacco. Perfectly balanced with great acidity and tannin structure. Drank over several hours and it never faded. One bottle left and I look forward to it.

This was a wow! Dark in color, with a floral nose and deep flavors. Most impressive was the depth of the fruit and the typical Pessac characters of smoke and earth. It was equally good with or without food.

Deep ruby, and slight fading pinkish edge. Aromas of roses, bit of ripe cassis, and cinnamon, liquorice, and a bit of graphite. Rounded tannins, a savoury attack, medium ripe cherry and green herbs, cloves, paprika, then a dark floral, liquorice and tar at the back. Fair length and complex finish. Pretty nice

Purchased 4 bottles at winebid back in 2012 and this was the second bottle of the 4; held in temperature conrolled storage. Cork in pristine shape and it was apparent based upon the aromas from the pour into the decanter that this is a representative example of a properly stored bottle. An hour later my first sips left me impressed as this is a 2004 that is showing cherry like and other dark fruit flavors combined with savory earthy flavors. Acid was in proper balance, and the tannins were mostly dissapated after the decant. No noticeable touch of oak which is typically a concern that I have with Pape. My first sips left me quite impressed as there was enough fruit in general that this Bordeaux did not cry out immediately for food or cheese. Paired well with the main course of a (Philly) garlic roll cheesesteak wit fried onions from Santuccis. (Perhaps this is shocking, but I have found that Bordeaux pairs incredibly well with the higher quality Philly cheasesteaks, which means not Pat's or Geno's.) No tertiary components were evident in this bottle as it's clearly at the top range of the bell curve of drinakability. I agree with others who think the wine will be its best up through 2022 or 2023, although it certainly will drinkwell beyond that time period but showing more tertiary components which I tend to appreciate in Pessacs. I you enjoy Pessacs I think it's a smart buy if you can pick up any properly stored bottles for up to $100.

1hr decant. One of the best smelling corks ever! Dark red color. Classic Bordeaux nose of earth, cedar, smoke, and massive floral elements. One of the deepest wines I’ve ever had. Dark cherry, flowers, and tar on the palate. Medium plus finish. Who said 2004 was an off year? This was awesome!

A great wine from a difficult year. The nose is as expected smokey, tobacco and pencil shavings. Hints of black cherry, ash, tobacco, leather, cedar and vanilla. A very complex and intense wine, full bodied and balanced. This 2004 Pape Clement has a long finish and left me with an aftertaste of menthol and undergrowth (sous-bois). Certainly not the best year, making it a fairly expensive wine for what you get. Big difference from the 09 vintage. I would drink this vintage no later than 2022. QPR: Medium 92p

Nose better than taste. Smells of pencil shavings dark fruit and menthol. Taste of black fruit but ends in some astringency and tannins. Probably still could go another few years with benefit

A charming Claret with plenty of the typical flavors of dark berries, pencil shavings, and soft resolving tannins. The vintage is not favorable and hence the balance is a bit off and lacks real depth but quite pleasing to drink. Mature already so drink up. Disclaimer the cork broken in half while opening.

I believe 2004 Brdx is generally under-appreciated and some wines clearly under-valued. A case in point is Pape Clement: very aromatic, tons of black fruit, balanced... actually, bears a strong resemblance to Pomerol

Black fruits, vanilla, tobacco, eucalyptus. Nice and long menthol finish. So consistent - Pape Clement is one of my favorites. Whilst the 2004 is not a strong expression, it is still a very good bottle. Enjoyed this tonight. Open now

Serious. Huge nose of cocoa and fudge and eucalyptus and cedar. Intense acidity and soft tannins, but too oaky on the finish for me. Good but hardly devastating. Why people go nuts over this stuff completely eludes me.

Impressive wine. One of my first experiences with cellared bordeaux this 2004, and WOW. 30 min decant, then Cedar on the nose with minerality; its scent was beguiling. Beautiful garnet color, no brick from oxidation. Beautiful cherry-raspberry flavor, acidity, and balance. And that cedar. Blown away! I regret foolishly leaving a glasses worth in the bottle for 2nd day because the nose was lost. Drink it up.

Drinking well. Nice aromatics of dark fruit and smoky cedar spice. Palate is nicely poised, mostly black frhits, well spiced and moderate length. There’s some oak and wine making here but all well presented. Should continue to improve but showing well now.
Smoothed out on night 2. A bit modern but nicely put together. An interesting smoked bacon note comes through.

Slow ox'ed for an hour or so and then decanted as it did not seem entirely open. This has developed nicely since my last bottle 2 years ago, fairly rich and round with still generous fruit despite the mediocre vintage. While I liked the 04 SHL better than the Pape in its youth, the Pape had caught up now and the two are at par in my eyes. Can drink now or hold for several more years. 91-92

Big, booming, mineral Graves. Nose of crushed cherries, blackcurrants, stones and mint. Succulent fruit and soft-tannins on the palate and a finish which goes on forever. Wow! One of my favourite wines of 2004.

40th Anniversary Magnum Party; 6/3/2017-6/4/2017 (R&D's): From magnum, leftover from the prior night. Notes of iron, dark fruit, herbs, tobacco and iodine. More dark fruit than red on the palate, along with iron and dried herb flavors. Long finish; well-balanced.

Decanted 1hr before serving. Peaked at around 2h open. Incredible expression of terrior. Nose of iron, smoke, damp earth, cinnamon, clove, sun-baked river stones and a trace of dill. Palate mirrors the nose with a core of delicate but juicy strawberry and maraschino cherry fruit slathered with gravely, earthy spice. Tannin is vanishingly smooth and silky and med+ body is cut with a fresh lift of acidity. In my view 2017 is peak drinking for this bottle -- as its terroir is vibrantly expressive but the fruit is also still quite luscious.

Drank over 2 hours from bottle. At ES with C & T. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of slight barnyard, dark gravelly earth, pencil lead, blackberries, blackcurrant. Developing. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), chewy chalky gum-drying high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, blackcurrant, dark gravelly earth, cedar, pencil lead, graphite. Long finish. Very good quality. Dark and broody. Definitely improving with more air. This still has some way to go before the chewy tough tannins soften up. Give this another 5+ years.

Opened and drunk within 1.5h. Rather explosive nose, candied cherries, licorice, menthol. On the mouth, tannins were still slightly gripping at first, making me say this is still in early days and should be let alone for another couple of years. Creamy palate, with red/black fruits, licorice, graphite, with just a hint of spice in the back. Medium acidity, medium+ body, not very long, hot (it made me wonder, was 2004 a hot summer?). Quite enjoyed, but it lacks depth and complexity. I agree with others that it's overpriced.

Decanted for two hours and drank like a twenty year old wine. This complex, sweet forest floor, fall smoke, licorice, sweet tannin beauty showed excellent and richly diverse fruit- currant, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black cherry. Classic in structure and mouth feel, the aromatics of licorice, earth, spice, and cedar this textured delight was quite a surprise and buried the 2005 on this evening.

Seemed a bit richer and rounder on the palate than my last bottle 10 months ago. Enjoyable Bordeaux but certainly not a remarkable Pape Clement, and at $80-90 not the great value the 2004 vintage can be. Similar / better quality can be found at half the price in this vintage (e.g. 2004 Smith Haut Lafitte, 2004 Leoville Barton etc).

needs 4-6 hours of decanting before it is even approachable, after which the nose does open a bit and starts to show a bit of cassis and dark fruit. the tannins do soften on the pallet, unfortunately the nose does not carry over, a bit flat. from here forward I don't believe the product justifies the price. The wine would be an ok Bordeaux at $16-22

Uniform dark violet color. Intense and very vegetal nose of cassis, violets, mocha, tobacco leaf and menthol, with tertiary driftwood and licorice. Very dark-fruited on the palate, with craisins, cherries, coffee, mint chocolate, and cloves. Medium finish with fully integrated tannins. My first Pape Clément is done in a very modern style with lots of earthy merlot. It's a delicious wine from a mediocre vintage, and its drinking nicely now.

This is rather disappointing, and I have 4 cases... PnP and drank over 2h with boeuf bourguignon at home. Dark garnet with a translucent rim. Dark berries and plum, after a while also a bit of sous bois, oak and spices. On the mid palate this has a sharpness I do not enjoy. Dark flavours dominate but this has only medium weight at best. On the positive (?) side, the tannins are well integrated already. Short to medium finish. Benefits a bit from more air but Smith Haut Lafite produced for once a much better wine than Pape Clement in the 04 vintage. Wait 5 years and hope, or sell...?

91-92 Schön dunkles lila Rot. Anfangs viel Bauernhof,Toast, animalisch. Dunkles Kerlchen,Brombeeren, schwarze Johannisbeeren,Leder. Doch recht dicht, deutlich prägend/trocknend,sehr/zu jung.Kein Leichtgewicht schon eher opulent anfangs sogar eher monolithisch.

Tis is my first experience with Pape Clemente. I am scoring this a 91 but maybe 92+ in time. The nose is incredible - Earth, dirt and blue fruit. Has good balance and should age well ... Medium garnet. Discrete nose of red fruit, barnyard, toast, in the typical animalic style of the house. On the palate medium bodied with quite present tannins and strong acidity. This wine needs a bit more aging but will never be among the great Pape Clements. Decant 1-2h.

Bordeaux 2004 (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): Creamy black fruits, beautiful oak and just a slight touch of bell peppers in the bouquet. On the palate a lot of dark forest fruits, creamy tannin, a touch of bell pepper as well and a firm amount of good acidity. In fact this wine is still a few years too young. Wait until 2017+. For now I scored the wine 91+

Bordeaux 2004 - an overview (Restaurant Bottles, Sas van Gent): Modern, jammy, concentrated, lactic feel of blueberry-yoghurt, toasted oak, volatile hints of glue. Not very long. Needs more time to shed it's babyfat, and develop more finesse. Not really my cup of tea. 17.5/20 (group scores: 90-94)

Dark ruby. A classic expression of left-bank Bordeaux with blackcurrant, black cherry, leather, cedar, and cloves characteristics. Tannins have calmed down, so it's starting to drink nicely now, but still has lots of life left in it as well (note that we tasted from a Magnum).

Served double blind, not sure how long it had been opened. Initially all of got was vanilla oak on the nose. Switch glasses and found a modern well oaked wine with black currants and finely woven tannins. Lengthy roasted coffee finish. Though I got a touch of a floral aspect on the nose and ignored my initial reaction that this was '04 SHL and went with '04 Malescott instead. Oh well. I've liked this more in the past, it's certainly in a modern style and still needs some time to integrate the oak. The merlot really shows through right now.

Margaux Horizontal 2004 (Toast Bistro, San Antonio): My WOTN. Incredible nose that demonstrated early maturity, with notes of dark cherries, graphite, fig, and tobacco. On day 2, nose continued to sing. Palate was very plump and rich, demonstrating its pessac roots with flavors of redcurrant, minerals, spice, raspberries, and a slight hint of dark mocha. This had a rich flavor profile that I have come across in the '04 vintage only with Pontet Canet. However, this easily outshines PC as the tannins are already beautifully integrated. A strong impression on the finish which bright acidity. I guessed Margaux blind as did not fit a Pauillac or St. Julien profile (initial thoughts on what Nutty brought). I would have also guessed a bigger vintage.

2004 Margaux horizontal (Toast Bistro, San Antonio, TX): Rich fragrant nose of cherry and currants (distinctly darker fruit profile) with a little chocolate. Palate was rich with ripe fruits, but nice acidity leading into a long finish of coffee and mocha and gravel with dried/roasted fruit on the finish. Great complexity and balance, though I don’t recall anyone thinking this was Margaux. I thought it was either Lascombs or Pape-Clement. Tannins were more prominent with air and were rather big and coarse. Should improve in the next 5yrs. Consensus WOTN.

Youthful ruby colour. This wine was initially closed but opened up nicely over the course of two hours. When it did, it revealed a bouquet of cassis, smokey oak and wet earth. Palate was medium bodied at best; quite round and supple. The wine was balanced without any green hints, but the oak does stick out a little at this stage. If I had more bottles I would hold for five years.

Dinner at Moomba (The Moomba, Circular Road): Good enough wine, especially if you like your Bordeaux on the modern side, but it needs time. Not completely to my taste though. I miss the old Pape Clement style. This wine was 54% Cab, 46% Merlot spending 18-20 months in 100% new oak - and it told. Lots of vanilla and mocha notes on the nose, almost like fresh coffee grounds, along with whiffs of rich plums and cassis. Far more modern than the L'Evangile we had alongside, and even more modern and oaky than the Aussie Parker Terra Rossa First Growth. Palate had plenty of refinement in its smooth, plush tannins and lush balance, but was clearly on the richer, voluptuous side, with rich blackberry, cassis and plum wed to touches of tobacco and pain grille. there was a bit of Graves minerality here and there, but it was the fruit that spoke the loudest on the day. There certainly was quality though, which the nice length and power on the finish attested to. Here again, there was more mocha and vanilla. A bit primary at the moment, all oak and fruit, but it should make for a really good drinking experience a decade or more down the road. No rush with this one.

With 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot this is a more refined style, aromas of blackberry, tobacco, char grille and loads of mineral. On the lighter side, with superseductive, soft, silky tannins. Hard not to guzzle. Can be drank now or over the next 5-8 years.

Trip to Bordeaux; 8/9/2009-8/14/2009: (tasted in the chateau) This is the Grand Vin and spends 18-20 months in 100% new oak. It has a beautiful deep red color and wonderful aromas of small berry fruits with smoaky notes. It is very delicate in the mouth, much more fruity than the nose (if that's possible), very refined and well made with a spicy finish of pepper and cinnamon. This is a very good wine, it is already perfectly good to drink and it seems it can stay like this for at least another decade. This tastes like a Grand Vin and certainly has the price of one (89€).

Cherry purple color, light and clear. A bit thin on the palate at first, with plentiful but pleasing tannins, ripe grape and black cherry that develop with time in the glass, with good acidity, judicious oak, and restrained alcohol. Lingering, fruity finish. I'd enjoy drinking this now and for the next several years, despite the tannins and acidity, as the stuffing may not be here for aging. This is a lovely wine, almost Burgundian in its lightness and elegance.

Haut-Bailly & Pape Clément (Compass): A big and juicy wine. The nose is all about power with waves of cassis hitting you with little subtlety. It is not without complexity however and it already is showing some nice secondary element of Graves. It doesn't seem to be going for elegance, but may acheive it in spite of itself if it can shed its youthful exhuberence. It also may veer off into pure decadence. For now though, it comes across as a bit blowzy despite some good structural elements.

QPR: Medium

Decanted 5 hours and tasted blind.
Opaque purplish color. Reticent nose and palate of tree fruit (black cherry) and cigar box with some minerality that is more pronounced on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, strong acidity and lots of tannin. Long finish.

This is a lovely wine, almost Burgundian in its lightness and elegance.

...Very boring this kind of Bordeaux...too modern that becomes a table wine ...losing its terroir and its classic great wine...
...I must go back for 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999...
...From vintage 2000...boring...boring...boring...and very boring....
...get out from Vogue magazine and go back to the vineyard....I recommend " you are not fashion wine " ...Oops....
...Ugly wine... ???
ps. Sorry for this tasting-note...I used to love Pape Clement very much...
ps 2. I hope it gonna be a better wine when it's getting old in next 10 years.

Ruby red, very young, very strong merlot scent. I think it is in the close stage. Powerful finish

Loaded with black fruit. Very juicy cassis. Hint of lead pencil. Long aftertaste. Powerful, elegant and complex wine. Already beautiful but a lot of potential (and a higher score).

Nice deep color with aromas of black currants, graphite and a hint of vanilla and smoke. Tannins are very present, but integrated into the overall finish. Should get better.

For a young wine, this bottle was terrific. Dark red, great nose, concentrated with lush fruits and a good 30+ finish. Can't wait to try another bottle when it has peaked more.

Lots of minerals, black fruits. Very elegant and typical Pessac feel.
