Cherries and dark fruit on the nose. In the mouth, it's rich with notes of fig; lingering; fully mature but will hold a few more years. 14.7 abv which is a little higher than I like.

We had this Zinfandel with steak and foie gras. Excellent. It still has plenty of fruit and drinks beautifully. I don't think it will get better, so I will be drinking my remaining bottles. Paul Draper is the man!

Just terrific. In a great, great spot right now, open and giving, but it’s still vigorous and only just showing a secondary profile. Sweet without any sweetness, built now more around its minty freshness than its brambly fruit. Delicious scents of blackberries, lavender, and menthol. Last bottle, so wish I had more.

Still lots of fruit, plums, dark berries, and leather on the nose. Well integrated, quite soft tannins and more dark fruit and plum notes on the palate. Medium finish. Drinking well and still has life ahead, but it’s not a very complex wine.

A pleasure bomb: I usually shy away from rich, high-alcohol, oaky California reds, but it would take a stronger man than me to resist the charms of this wine. And I had to do a double take at the label -- this is a ripe, full-bodied wine, without much acid, but also without any sign of overmaturity.

Showing slightly more fruit than the previous bottle, this is still the product of a less (bad) vintage. For students looking to learn about the influence of oak, it presents an interesting opportunity but otherwise I couldn’t recommend it.

Opened this for another wine friend who needed cheering up and, well, I should have chosen something else.
Paul Draper’s vintage notes on the back admit that the wine received much more oak (American) than normal, and I’m afraid that the wine suffers as a result. Hints of violets and cocoa powder, but it’s all drowned out by a strong note of old fashioned root beer liquour. It’s unlike any thing I’ve ever gotten from a wine in American Oak. I have a few bottles left, so I’m optimistic that with even more time, they’ll evolve beyond this...

Bottle purchased from winebid. Capsule looked good and cork broke at the midpoint but was fairly easily retrieved. PnP. Showing just fine at a group tasting. There are some green aromatics (and I am not very sensitive to pyrazines) with blackberry and rhubarb fruit with spicy zin typicity on the finish. Broke down with a couple hours of oxygen and no good at all on day 2, so finish it in one session ;)

Decanted for sediment then drunk after about an hour to and hour and a half.
Nose is oak and blue fruit, dried fruit, white flowers.
Palate: A little too much vanilla for my tastes leading to a creamy berry flavor. Not a bad bottle and tannins are fully resolved. Enjoyable wine but a little one-dimensional. Will not improve with age. Drink up.

Tasted blind. Rich purple fruited nose, a spike of EtOH, some oaky spice, faintly smoky over a silky but linear palate. American oak here, and when the dried strawberries poke out it's clear this is Ridge but doesn't strike me as Geyserville or Lytton so I'm not sure what to guess, some field blend 20 years old.

Tasted blind. Very blue-themed nose; blueberries, yogurt, hedonistic aromas. Full bodied, yet sort of transparent overall. Blueberries and cream palate, and a nice finish of wood and tannin, but missing something in the middle. I like this, but I like it best up front and on the nose.

Tasted blind. Candied fruit nose, spicy, peppery palate. Lovely balance, but with sharp cranberry zing that is slightly odd. Good juice, but my least favorite of the blind tasting of 4 wines.

decanted one hour. on-point bottle, performed perfectly on an unseasonably mild Jan. night at the table; warm berries nose, mature brambly fruit, delightful weight & texture.
Hmmm, a classic in many ways, fully mature, lush, luscious, and charming. But I also found a sharpness that was slightly out of balance, and an alcoholic edge detracted from the overall score. Wonderful to drink now, I believe it will hold steady for a couple of good years.

The wine sits almost translucent in the glass. The bouquet offers up a deep brambly nose. The flavors of brambleberry on the attack and the finish of coffee and mocha make for a very nice wine. This too needs a bit of time to open up with the third tasting presenting more elements. But the wine lacks depth or length. Nice enough, but little else. 14.7% alc. Recommended. All wines tasted with homemade dry rubbed smoked pork shoulder BBQ). 05.28.16 with good friends to celebrate Memorial Day holiday.

Drank the last bottle with grilled lamb chops, 2 nights after opening and never drinking, so it sat corked in fridge until last night. This is remarkably young and ripe for its age, with still deep dark purple color and full black fruits, raspberry and cherry. Virtually no tannin and extremely smooth, this wine is VERY easy to drink.

A Ridge Lytton Spring Vertical and a few others (our home): Really nice showing for this wine. In a rare showing this took 7/8 first place votes from the group. Purple/ruby on the rim. The nose is great. Dusty with black raspberries and cherries. Lovely texture which turned out to be in most of the wines. Juicy yet lush. The palate has dark raspberries and a bit of spice. Deep with some layering. There is also a slight sour note which is really nice. Slight tannins. Long finish. Shows some visual signs of age, but still drinks youthfully. Impressive showing.

Wow, this is a very young bottle. Full of deep, vibrant, purple fruit, orange peel. Typical Ridge perfume and floral notes. Some leather and tar black fruit. Strong and delicate at the same time. I've had this wine probably a dozen times, this may be the best bottle I've had. A-

Zins, Serbians, Syrahs and others (Lou's): Really drinking quite well. This was a back up bottle. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is very complex with black and red raspberries, some leather, some black pepper. On the palate, this seems much younger. Nice texture. Layers of complexity. Lot of fruit left too. For a few, this was the WOTN.

Dense dark red with briary dark red fruit. Decent acidity. A touch of warmth, but overall this is pretty balanced with good grip and freshness. A little more elegance than the Geyserville with mineral edge. ****

Another lovely Ridge wine. PnP and drunk over the evening. The color is bricking but the nose is vibrant and perfumed. Wonderful mid palate of bright cheery fruit gives way to a satisfying but not very lengthy aftertaste. Wish we had more.

Bought recently at retail without provenance details.
The cork was immaculate, revealing a dark ruby colored wine. After two hours in the decanter, the bouquet includes anise, plum, cedar, and a hint of eucalyptus. Upon tasting, I first notice how smooth the wine is. This light to medium bodied wine offers up flavors of dark roasted coffee and charcoal, but no discernible fruit. The experience concludes with a brief flash of acid and minimal, if any tannin. A disappointing finish to this wine.

Decanted one hour. Rather than the rugged, worsted texture I was expecting after thirteen years, this was liqueur-like, or to borrow a phrase, like a reduction sauce or "coulis" of black raspberry and blackberry. Not much tannin left. The oak has reduced substantially, now manifesting in a sort of coconut-caramel nuance on the palate, not the nose, that isn't too overt and seems to hang out in the background of the palate. I was hoping for layers of flavor and some complexity, but I didn't get either. It's smooth, liqueur-like, but not especially complex or compelling. I'm not sure what a decade in my cellar did to improve this wine, apart from allowing the oak to integrate (although not completely). Purchased on release, cellared and brought to the Levines.

Excellent. THe wonderfully descriptive Ridge label predicted thid would soften and improve for 5 - 10 years. We are now in year 12 and it is still excellent. We let it breath about an hour.

Mature, lovely wine. Doesn't have the wonderful energy that a younger Lytton Springs has, but still a very nice mellowing wine. Pretty with lots of soft floral notes. B/B+

Blackberry liqueur nose, Drapier perfume developing, espresso, rich and big fruit like a young vintage port, starts off with a bitter note on the finish, like an over roasting but improves with air. Early adolescence here, deftly balanced between power and restrained, sweet yet refreshing. Glossy tannins, some oak, good finish, will improve for another 5+. Very good today.

Cellared since release and enjoyed with Oliver during our July 4th bbq. Still very dark in color, with dark fruits on the palate, showing good richness. The tannins have integrated and the wine is quite smooth. Luckily, the oak has completely absorbed. Good richness to the palate, but I was hoping for more layers and complexities, which were lacking. Good, but not great.

Similar to prior notes. No sign of going over the hill, but still a bit tannic. After about 2 hours the tannins begin to recede but the fruit is still rather reserved. A good but not great bottle.

Recollecting as I clean up my database, but I recall that this wine was probably on the slight decline, but very slight. Dark ruby color, nice balance, mid to heavy body. Fruit is softer than I expected, but that is the age I think. Drink now!

Found this bottle in the cellar non-inventoried. Nice surprise. Dark garnet color with minimal signs of age. Minimal aromatics. Quite fruity with ripe plum and blackberry flavors that evolve into a lengthy, earth/spiced finish. Nice balance with heavy to medium body.

nat cork. A dull dark purple with brown tinges. Nice nose, clear aged character, brown sugar perhaps. Ripe and warm with dark fruit. Soft in the mouth, very little tanning or structure but nicely resolved. And lingers pleasantly on the finish. Enjoyed.

Smooth black fruit on the palate, the oak that I expected to find has absorbed well. At ten years, this is mellow and smooth rather than brambly and spicy and it's not showing much in terms of layers nor complexity. My feeling is to hold this for another 3-5 years and see whether it will become something great. Right now, it's acceptable but nothing profound. I brought this to Heather and Danon's beach house for July 4th. The last vintage of Ridge Zin that I bought.

Similar to my last bottle in 2010-- muted nose and candied red fruit on the palate, overall not the big berry zin Lytton Springs sometimes is, but more to my palate with structure and acidity.

Subdued nose but very nice on the palate - well rounded and not too sweet with long finish. One of the nicest Ridge Lytton Springs I have tasted and perfectly matured after 10 years. This bottle made it across the Pond with me more than 6 years ago and no worse for wear.

Tasted en magnum at dinner at Spago with JBR, BM, and Danish boys. Lovely color and opened right up in the glass. Sweet cassis-cherry notes and warm smooth finish. This wine is drinking perfectly right now, at least if it was bottled in a large format. Just slightly on the light side, otherwise close to the perfect embodiment of California zin!

A blend of 76% Zinfandel 17%(!) Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane and all Dry Creek Valley. Rhubarb and cocoa; cocoa and rhubarb. Not a great deal of complexity, but it does deliver a great deal of satisfaction. The heat of the alcohol detracts from the finish, but the flavor profile nevertheless is full, unabashed Zin. The tannins have softened, but will soften more. Hold for another five years and watching something special unfold. A small bit of sediment beginning to collect at the shoulder. 14.7% alc. With grilled bison burgers with sides of baked corn and roasted sweet potato wedges with rosemary salt. Recommended.

From magnum. Dark, brooding, briary fruits with rounded mouthfeel, full bodied and delicious, with what is to my mind the "good" zinfandel spice...more brown spices and cayenne (as opposed to grapefruit). This will continue to mature into a wonderful old ridge with at least a decade of rich drinking ahead from this format.

Compared to the bottle tasted last November, this was kept under much better conditions, to the degree that it smelled and tasted like a much younger wine... Dark ruby with garnet hues. Earth, ripe blackberries, licorice, sweet spices and ink on the complex nose. Mid-full bodied with rich plummy fruit, firm, fine grained tanins and balancing acidity. Long+ finish. Already enjoyable will age nicely for several years. Fantastic wine.

Round, rich with a sweet core, lots of coffee and a long expansive finish. This is fully mature and ready to drink--he fruit is in the fore, the structure faded to the back. Lots of energy with pretty fruit and plenty of floral perfume. this must be at its full mature peak and will fade over the next 5ish years. Silky, smooth, and suave. B/B+

Others have captured the essence-- elegant and smooth. Red (candied) berries on the nose; sweet red berries on palate, little oak, great balance and mouthfeel. Having tasted many Turley zins in the past 18 months, I prefer the restraint balance and structure I taste in Ridge, but appreciate if big berry is your objective, Ridge may not be your wine.

Fruit has waned a bit naturally but the wine showed a smoothness that was very attractive. Nose was nice and inviting. I agree with others that there is no reason to wait any longer. I think the wine peaked a few years ago but the decline is slow. I would have prefered to drink this wine a bit earlier. I prefer a bit more upfront fruit and youthfulness. It still had great color. Finish was a bit short. It threw lots of sediment so I would decant.

Big rich and spicy. Too much oak for me at this stage, and lacking the satiny integration that marks a good vintage of Lytton for me. My last bottle, but I don't think this would be harmed in the least by a couple of more years in the cellar.

Blackish, garnet hued, deep, murky ruby, slightest of bricking at rim. Nose of briary, crushed raspberrries, with hints of smoke, earth and spicebox, and some oak that compliments. Jammy, sour ripe plums on the palate, drying mouthwatering tannins, and excellent length. Fruit oriented and firm with a leathery mouth feel. Medium bodied and delicious. Served slightly cool, no heat. An odd, slightly astringent, pickle quality shows up in the undertones at about the half hour mark on the back end - a dill-like vegetalism. Strange, and not my cup o tea, but not horrible or overly obvious. Strange though. Perfect pitch and maturity right now, and maybe for a couple more years. Nicely crafted.

This was an outstanding, and surprising zinfandel blend. Even compared to Turley and Linne Calodo zins this week, we completely enjoyed this one.
It was very well balanced, great nose, and nice fruit on the palate. Tasted jammy, with licorice, pepper, and a nice strong finish of 30+ seconds. I would say that this wine would be good for drinking for at least another couple of years.

This elderly citizen by zin standards is holding up quite well. There's a moderately intense firm core of raspberry fruit wrapped with enough tannin to give it structure and act as a foil for the pasta with tomato sauce. There was a surprising stain of sediment on the innner surface of the bottle shoulder, so there's obviously some sediment falling out. Very good, but I'm not sure there is anything to gain by holding on to these zins, even the best-made ones.

Most pleasing Zin we've had in months. Beautiful violet-perfume nose, really stunning for a zin blend. Clearly well-integrated components of upbeat earthiness, tasty oak, medium fruit texture, and a seamless mouthfeel from beginning to end. Really a well-made wine, and it shows. Why we don't drink more Ridge...I have no idea.

Lovely deep cherry red with lightening edges. Very rich nose-- blackcurrants, mulberry, cinnamon, nicely complex with plenty of integrated oak. Just sweet silk on the palate-- has almost a milk chocolate sort of quality to it, balanced and so dense-- black cherries, cinnamon, with acidity akin to blood oranges or so. Lovely balance, rich, not the least bit heavy, long-lingering oak and cherry on the finish. Only the finish disappoints, but only in the context of the nose and palate.

Humm. A rather disappointing bottle -can Zin go through a dumb phase ? initially a bit muted and rather monolithic so we decanted it and after about 2 hrs it got somewhat better with a richer mid palate and a bit more sweetness still not as good as I remember this upon release. maybe an off bottle or at a strange point as I remember older bottles of LS to age quite well for a zin.

Deep garnet with purple hues. Beautiful perfumed nose, atypical for a zin, which balanced nicely against the blackberry fruit, spicy black pepper and warm, subtle oak. Smooth on the palate, featuring very fine and integrated tannins. Medium-bodied, with a long, pleasant finish. A very elegant and refined wine - ripe and juicy enough to fill the shoes of a zin, buit offering a lot more complexity than the garden-variety fruit-bomb. Nicely done.

A solid B+ for this middle aged zin. The family resemblance to younger versions is clearly apparent, but the muscle, tannin and acidity are all toned down, making it more gentle. Not the perfect match with seared Ahi tuna with ponzu sauce at East City Grill, but enjoyed neverthelss. I see no ponit in letting it go any further though.

Full colour; damsons, bramble, red fruit, blood and mineral on the nose; soft attack with briary fruit and glycerin, then firms up on the mid-palate with good grip and nice acidity. Quite a big wine drinking well now but with time to go. Very good, but I'd like a little more focus on the attack.

Solid value, balanced in this overripe year, aging well, not as far along as other 2001s, I think this could easily last 5-10 more years. Beginning to show some complexity. Dark red color, all the way to the rim. Slightly closed nose of blackberries and briary zinfandel spice with a touch of tar, flavors the same with a bit of bacon and dried herbs. Balancing acidity and some medium tannins. Medium finish.

Medium color without any signs of maturity. Briary fruit up front but this has more port-like ripeness than Ridge wines usually have. Still, this is no monster, and it retains a sense of restraint and balance. Good but not special, and probably will go on for a while, but seemingly very little evolution since release. My lack of enthusiasm is more reflective of how I view the varietal rather than this specific bottle, so take my faint praise with a grain of salt.

This is the serious side of zin; not at all a casual sipper, it's loaded with complex minerally fruit backed by substantial tannins. It begs for food, the heartier the better. I don't think I could pick it out as a zin in a range of reds from different varieties of similar age. I see my note differs substantially from the one I made last year; is it evolution (i.e., the petite sirah starting to dominate) or bottle variation?

Excellent zin which has now become harmonious without losing authority. Empatically itself and not to be confused with other reds, it has that special spiciness and blackberry flavor I imagine is what is meant by "brambly." It won't improve and it's perfect with summer grilled foods now.

Deep, opaque crimson right to the rim. Nose not very expressive upon opening. Sweet cherry, boysenberry pie on the nose. Very nice integrated oak. With a few minutes of air, the nose fills out. Full. Deep. Complex. Suave. The palate is deeply textured and elegant with mild but dusty tannins. After half an hour, the nose is really strutting. Layers of spice, ripe fruit, toasty oak. Wow! This is lovely wine and proves that Zin (and Zin blends) can be serious wine. I just wish more Ridge wines showed this level of character and poise. This is absolutely first class wine.

Open for a few days now, this is a real beauty. Color is purple-garnet, not opaque. The nose was bursting with black raspberry, cherry, espresso, licorice, and a noticeable touch of vanilla scented oak. In the mouth the depth of fruit is evident, yet not excessive, jammy, or over-the-top at all...succulent black fruits coat the palate, and the acidity really makes the mouth water followed by a subtle tannic finish. If there's such a thing as elegance in a Zin-based wine this might be it. All things considered, a very, very good Lytton, just a notch below the 99 and 02 in my book.

1/19/04 at home. Solid dark ruby color. Cocoa-scented nose. Very rich in the mouth. Chocolatey. Smooth silky, yet with good 'grip'. Fine-grained tannins. 5-11-16-7-89/100. H says 88.

This is very black in color. Blackberry, blueberry, massive dark fruit on the nose. On the palate this is very soft, with gobs of fruit, yet there is also a lot of tannin and alcohol coming out on the finish. Tonight this is all over the map and showing fairly disjointed. I'm hoping that this comes together tomorrow for a better showing. DAY 2: OK, this is a different beast--this has really pulled it together! The nose has settled down a bit and gained some spice and pepper with a bit of funk. The 14.7% alcohol is fairly contained. On the palate this is very black and forbidding with loads of structure, long, long finish, with dusty, somewhat drying tannins. Bumping this up to 89.

This was tasted at a retailer-held Ridge tasting on 4/25/03 in Sacromento.
This was the sixth wine tasted. OK, now we are talking. Most concentrated fruit of the zins, this one is definitely a large step up. Blackberry, a hint of raspberry, dark cherry. Spicy oak on the relatively long finish. This is one worth buying. 91 points. I would like to try this again, but this seemed like the best LS since the 97.

Cherries and dark fruit on the nose. In the mouth, it's rich with notes of fig; lingering; fully mature but will hold a few more years. 14.7 abv which is a little higher than I like.
