(CONDRIEU Gangloff) Cote Rotie Dear Friends, As the wine-world heads toward Ampuis this weekend (for the annual Cote Rotie show, held in the local high school gymnasium), the three prized wines we offer below will probably be gone by then. Only a few dozen cases of Gangloff's portfolio are headed to the US and the recent Tanzer reviews (see below from last week) will not help allocations. If my math is correct only 5 cases of the Cote Rotie Sereine Noir are headed to the US (that's a little more than one bottle per state) and the La Barbarine isn't much better. To top it off, there are only 36 bottles of the Condrieu...for the whole country! That's about as rare as it gets. As an original member of the new underground in Cote Rotie, Yves Gangloff has spawned a host of copycats (and followers) with his no holds barred style and personality. He is one of the iconic personalities of the Rhone and one of the first producers in the North to demystify the vinous experience with a blend of visual art, Viognier and Syrah that flows back and forth between taste and sight with little care for the establishment or the authorities (his wine labels reflect that vision). Often criticized for extreme winemaking, Gangloff is also compared to Selosse (like Cormerais in Muscadet) but, in this case, the reference is more valid. There are no rules with Yves Gangloff - if the result is what he was after, the "how" is not important (a comparison to Sean Thackrey also comes to mind). Yes, there is often obtuse use of wood but there is also very special fruit and heavenly spice that few in Cote Rotie are able to achieve (except possibly Guigal). Certainly not for the faint of heart, the Cote Rotie of Yves Gangloff can transcend the Northern Rhone (just like La Mouline or La Landonne) and transport the taster to a place rarely explored. In addition, Gangloff believes his 2007 Cote Rotie's are among the finest he's ever produced. HIGHLY RECOMMEDED as the vintage that finally puts Gangloff at the forefront of a world-wide collector base (even though there is hardly any wine to go around) This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 2008 Domaine Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Condrieu 2007 Domaine Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Cote Rotie "La Barbarine" 2007 Domaine Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Cote Rotie "La Sereine Noire" I guess EXTREMELY LIMITED is obvious at this point?
