(DEUX ALBIONS St. Cosme) 2007 Rhone - IMPORTANT Dear Friends, Ok, this one gets the important tag - it's about as good of a laugh-out-loud wine as there is in the 2007 Rhone frenzy and they're bottling it for you....in magnum only. As long-winded as I usually am, I will try to be brief this morning: if you are looking for a black-stained, glycerol rich, large format Chëteauneuf-du-Pape-a-like and wish to pay less than $40 (impossible) - you may want to consider a bevy of these. For a dinner party circa 2008-2010, this wine just about guarantees a good time will be had by all - it's that impressive. In 2007, with the best vintage material Barruol ever had to work with, he decided to craft a Deux Albion for the ages (he almost called it something else as the Deux Albions "brand" was not good enough for this wine - we'll see next year if this morphs into something other than a Cote du Rhone with a much higher price to match). What used to be a negociant bottling has turned into a 100% organically grown, estate offering for the first time - hand-made from a 12-15 acre parcel of vines that he tends in the same manner as his single-site Gigondas. He considers this wine to be so serious in nature that it's been held back for bottling to allow it to bubble away with his high-end 2007 wines (the regular 2007 Cotes du Rhone was bottled some time ago). Lovingly dubbed "the Deux Freres" of Cotes du Rhone (as a tongue-in-cheek reference to Usseglio's CdP), the only thing not very impressive about the Deux Albions is the price - a magnum of fruit-slathered, giddy-inducing 2007 wine for one of the more pro-consumer tariff's of the vintage. What's apparent from the first whiff (and glance) is that the massive 2007 Deux Albions and the words "Cotes du Rhone" have very little in common. Bottled expressly for you (a few days ago) from the best material available, this should prove to be a wine that transcends every strata of our email list - from collectors to neophytes, young to old - all of us can find a use for a large bottle like this at some point in our vinous travel through life.
